I’ve been a healthcare assistant with Marie Curie for four years. What led me to join this remarkable organization was a deeply personal experience.
Seven years ago, my father was in the end-of-life stage. He had wanted to be at home during his final moments, so I arranged for him to return home. He spent only one more night there, but he wasn’t alone. A Marie Curie nurse was by our side.
Facing the emotions that come with knowing a loved one is at the end of their life can be difficult. Having a nurse with us made it easier to deal with these feelings. That’s when I made the decision to join Marie Curie.
You might assume that being with family members during the end of one’s life would be a sad experience. But what may surprise you is that it’s not. The family, in my experience, make the most of the time they have and understand that their loved one is dying, but it’s not a time for sorrow; it’s a time of togetherness and warmth.
I remember one particular family—three sisters—and the fourth was in the end-of-life stage. When I arrived, she was unaware, and I knew she might not make it through the night.
But sitting with the sisters, talking about their childhood, and sharing photos. I felt it was a special time. They mentioned that their sister had asked for peaches ‘n’ cream earlier that day, and they made sure she got it.
We lost her that night. The sisters expected it, they thanked me, and it was a comforting experience. Our role is to support families and the individuals who are dying. We can’t change the matter of necessity, but we can make-a difference. We provide support through the early stages of sorrow.
4. Why did the author join Marie Curie?
A. To memorize her father. B. To deal with her sad feelings.
C. To provide help and services. D. To express her thanks to nurses.
5. What did the author do before the youngest sister died?
A. She accompanied her family. B. She took photos for her.
C. She told stories to her sisters. D. She comforted her parents.
6. What does the author think of her job?
A. Challenging. B. Rewarding. C. Eye-opening. D. Time-consuming.
7. What does the author intend to express at last?
A. The support of family counts. B. Helping others is helping yourself.
C. It’s never late to change ourselves. D. End-of-life company means a lot.

One of the best parts of travel is always the food. Or, more specifically, the junk food. It’s a delight people are unlikely to get to experience during the pandemic. But in one corner of the internet, hungry people are keeping the joy of international snacks alive.
On SnackExchange, users trade the delights of their homeland by mail. First, you find someone on the board to swap with. You and your partner then post each other a box full of local finest processed foods, eventually uploading photos of your haul(收获) on the board for others to see.
First created in 2010, SnackExchange’s membership now totals 102,000. Most come to experience snacks they can’t find at home.
For the users who take part in snack exchanges, it’s a way to learn more about the world. For Meghan Quallick, a snack swapper from California, part of the motivation for swapping with an Australian was to get a specific item: Cadbury Black Forest bars. A co-worker of hers had eaten the chocolate bars on a trip to Australia in years past and fallen in love with them, but was then unable to source them at home. Quallick’s snack partner included 10 bars of the chocolate in her package. “To get some and bring them to her was pretty exciting,” Quallick said. “My colleague had tears in her eyes.”
Snack exchanges do come with obvious financial disadvantages. Part of the process is to agree on a budget before you swap – on average that’s around the US$40-50 mark. But you should be prepared to spend twice as much on shipping as the actual snacks. Occasionally swappers get scammed(欺骗) by partners who don’t deliver on their end of the deal.
Often, the snack exchanges are about more than just the food. Heather Clarke, a snack swapper from Melbourne says, “They’re often cultural exchanges as well. You get people going, ‘Can you tell me what this is?’” Often, users enclose(随信附上) instructions on how to best consume the snacks. Going the extra mile is in the spirit of the community.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The history of snack exchanges.
B. Why people love to exchange snacks.
C. How users exchange snacks on SnackExchange.
D. The influence the pandemic has on snack exchanges.
9. Why did Quallick’s colleague cry?
A. She quarreled with Quallick.
B. She failed to find a swapper herself.
C. She found the snack she ate before online.
D. She got what she desired to eat from Quallick.
10. What is a disadvantage of snack exchanges?
A. Swappers easily get cheated.
B. Swappers have to spend more on shipping.
C. Swappers seldom find exactly what they want.
D. Swappers may spend more time than usual shopping.
11. What does Clarke say about snack exchanges?
A. They should be improved.
B. They promote cultural exchanges.
C. They are lacking in community spirit.
D. They should have detailed guides from swappers.
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

One of the first things people do when they use Google Street View is check out the place where they live. So when Tawanda Kanhema moved to the United States in 2009, he looked up his hometown of Harare, Zimbabwe's capital city, on the map of panoramic (全景的) images.
But there was nothing to see. Harare wasn't on Street View. And neither was the rest of Zimbabwe. As Kanhema looked around more, many Western cities were on the platform, but only a handful of African countries were. “I found it quite jarring that a lot of countries in the region were not on the map, ” he says.
As services like Google Maps have increasingly become our primary map of the world, being left out of features like Street View can have consequences. Street View helps people with everyday tasks like checking out a new commute (通勤) route, choosing a restaurant or deciding where to go on vacation. The platform also provides a large amount of data used by Google to improve its mapping services and by local governments looking to make improvements to an area.
For Kanhema, the omission (遗漏) highlighted a digital divide between his hometown and major Western cities. So he decided to try to get Zimbabwe on Street View. Kanhema, who works as a product manager and is a photographer in his spare time, volunteered to carry Google's Street View equipment to map what amounted to 2, 000 miles of his home country. “We should do more to make sure that those communities are represented,” Kanhema says.
In 2018, Kanhema took a two-week hike through Zimbabwe with the equipment. There was a speedboat ride across the Zambezi River and a trip through a national park. Most of his time, though, was spent driving down the streets of Harare and the highways that connect Zimbabwe's major cities.
All this is a lot of work, but for Kanhema, it's a hobby. Google doesn't pay him. Kanhema spent around $5, 000 of his own money to travel across Zimbabwe for the project. “What motivates me is the constant reminder these companies need to pay attention to those parts of the world,” he says.
12. What does the underlined word “jarring” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Touching. B. Interesting. C. Surprising. D. Frightening.
13. What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3?
A. The development of Google Maps.
B. The significant role of Street View.
C. The application of Street View in poor areas.
D. The benefits mapping services brought to Google.
14. What made Kanhema work as a Google's volunteer?
A. His interest in traveling.
B. His preparation for his own business.
C. His eagerness to be a professional photographer.
D. His worries about the exclusion of his hometown.
15. Which of the following best describes Kanhema?
A. Calm and kind. B. Far-sighted and imaginative.
C. Dedicated and patriotic. D. Open-minded and courageous.
C 13. B 14. D 15. C

As Kanhema looked around more, many Western cities were on the platform, but only a handful of African countries were.( Harare不在街景地图上。
根据文章第三段“As services like Google Maps have increasingly become our primary map of the world, being left out of features like Street View can have consequences. Street View helps people with everyday tasks like checking out a new commute (通勤) route, choosing a restaurant or deciding where to go on vacation. The platform also provides a large amount of data used by Google to improve its mapping services and by local governments looking to make improvements to an area.(随着像谷歌地图这样的服务越来越多地成为我们了解世界的主要途径,被排除在街景等特色功能之外可能会产生后果。街景视图帮助人们完成日常任务,比如查看新的通勤路线、选择餐厅或决定去哪里度假。该平台还提供了大量数据,谷歌利用这些数据改进其地图服务,而地方政府则利用这些数据改善某个地区。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是街景地图的重要性,能帮助人们完成日常任务,政府可以利用其提供的数据来改善某个地区。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“For Kanhema, the omission (遗漏) highlighted a digital divide between his hometown and major Western cities. So he decided to try to get Zimbabwe on Street View. 【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“In 2018, Kanhema took a two-week hike through Zimbabwe with the equipment. There was a speedboat ride across the Zambezi River and a trip through a national park. Kanhema spent around $5, 000 of his own money to travel across Zimbabwe for the project.(谷歌不付钱给他。Kanhema自己花了大约5000美元周游Zimbabwe来完成这个项目)”可推知,Kanhema是一个爱国的人,为了能让世界了解他的祖国,他自费拍摄了津巴布韦的照片并上传到谷歌地图上。故选C。

In many ways, this seems to be true. Chinese cuisine is a case in point. China is a country with vast areas and a large population. So the food is as varied as the people. For example, people in Shandong like boiled dumplings ____38____ (serve) with vinegar, because the process of making dumplings can bring ____39____ family members together. ____40____ (traditional), people in Xinjiang spent most of their time on horsebacks, and that is why they prefer their food ____41____ (cook) over an open fire. In conclusion, through food, Chinese people everywhere show their culture as well as their friendship and kindness. So what we can say is that culture and cuisine go hand in hand, and if you do not experience one, you can never really know the other.
36. which
37. referring
38. served 39. the
40. Traditionally

______________________________________________________________________________________
You are what you eat.

No amount of begging (乞求) would change my father’s mind about getting a pet. No matter how desperately I begged, his answer was "No! " Finally, I accepted that he was not going to change his mind. I did the only thing that I could. I spent as much time as possible around other people’s pets and I often spent time at a place called Best Friends, an animal shelter near my house. Animals ended up there when their owners could no longer care for them.
Whenever I visited the shelter (收容所), I dreamed about taking one of the dogs home with me. One day after school, I stopped off at Best Friends like I usually did. Suddenly, I saw a large, shaggy, yellow dog standing in the corner, and when he saw me, he wagged his tail and began whining (哀鸣).
“That’s Fenway,” Renee, the woman at the desk, said. “He whines continuously. His owners brought him here when they moved overseas.”
“He must be lonely,” I suggested.
“Your parents won’t let you have a dog?” Renee asked. I didn’t answer, but my look must have said everything, because then she said, “That’s too bad. These dogs need good homes and good people to take care of them.” On my way home, I had an idea to assist shelter pets like Fenway. I wrote a touching story as if Fenway were writing it. I told all about his family and why he had no home, shedding light on (解释) his longing for a loving family. With the shelter director’s approval, I proposed sharing more stories in newspapers and online to attract potential adopters.
The next weekend, the shelter was flooded with families who wanted pets. They were all drawn by the heartfelt stories of animals like Fenway. Fenway’s tail wagged so fast that I was afraid it might fall off. I stood with Fenway as people admired him. His playful nature and hopeful eyes won over many visitors` hearts, leading to a rise in adoptions.

He gave me a smile and said, “We thought it was time to give a home to a furry friend, and Fenway seemed like the perfect choice.” I was overjoyed and ran towards Fenway, hugging him tightly. This was a dream come true.

Or more specifically, the junk food.

For Kanhema the omission (遗漏) highlighted a digital divide between his hometown and major Western cities.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
