Many unique caves in the world are found on the shores of oceans and lakes. They are always there to attract visitors across the globe.
Sea Lion Caves
Found on the Oregon Coast, it’s well-known as the only mainland breeding ground (繁殖地) of the Steller sea lion, a near-threatened species. Many teenagers like to battle it out in the world of video games, but 15-year-old Ming Letian buries himself in the world of numbers: sudoku (数独). From November 6 to 7, the 13th World Sudoku Cham- pionship (WSC), attracting 248 contestants from 33 countries and regions, was held in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. The Chinese under-18 sudoku team swept the individual medals and won the team silver. As a member of the national team, Ming, the Senior 1 student from Dalian No 24 High School, Liaoning province, took the top position.
Like most people, Ming fell in love with sudoku after he first encounter the simple yet challenging game in a newspaper when he was just 6 years old. With pencil in hand, he quickly filled in a grid (方格) of 9×9 boxes so that every row, column and square contained the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition. From 2015 he learned strategies and visualization techniques from teachers; then he took to the field.
“The joy of the game is discovering new ways to solve a problem,” said Ming. “When I filled in the last squares, after an hour of thinking, I had a sense of achievement.” Solving a puzzle on a couch, however, is very different from filling in grids at the World Championship. In competition, players need to complete a variety of sudoku puzzles of different sizes, shapes and skill levels — easy, medium and hard. Every puzzle is timed, which means that players have to finish them quickly and correctly.
Although we’re not all geniuses, millions of people are still addicted to this game. “Sudoku relies on logic, not knowledge. You don’t have to know anything, basically, to do it. So why not sharpen your reasoning and give it a shot?” wrote Will Shortz, crossword editor for a newspaper.
4. What was Ming Letian’s achievement at the WSC?
A. He won the team gold. B. He came in second place.
C. He won the bronze medal. D. He ranked first individually.
5. How did Ming Letian become interested in sudoku?
A. He was inspired by many other role models. B. He saw the game via media at a young age.
C. He was satisfied with solving the puzzles. D. He learned about it from his math teacher.
6. What might be one of the challenges faced by players at the WSC?
A. Speed and accuracy are needed for each puzzle. B. Every puzzle examines higher-order thinking.
C. Pencils are not allowed to fill in the squares. D. They have to stand up long to finish the game.
7. What can be inferred from Will Shortz’s words?
A. Sudoku is mainly genius-focused. B. Sudoku is just knowledge-based.
C. Sudoku is beneficial to logical reasoning. D. Sudoku is the basis of mental growth.
C
“I’d like to have your problem!” It is a common remark made to underweight people, who tend to awake more envy than sympathy. However, underweight people have just as much trouble putting on the pounds as overweight people have losing them — they are also related to health risks.
The problem of the underweight is that they are unwilling or unable to eat enough, or they eat like a horse but still do not gain weight. They have a fast metabolism (新陈代谢) and can eat whatever they want without putting on kilograms. People with a slow metabolism deposit most of the energy they take in with food as body fat. People with a fast metabolism burn this energy off, producing heat.
To someone who is overweight, a fast metabolism may seem desirable. But from a medical standpoint it is a problem. Being underweight is usually accompanied by a lack of basic nutrients and/ or trace elements. This increases the risk of developing disorders such as osteoporosis, weakens muscle function and slows the healing of wounds. Underweight people are often elderly, have little appetite or perhaps are no longer able to chew properly. People can also lose a lot of weight due to a serious disease or chemotherapy (化疗).
A potential health problem is also sometimes to blame. Even young, healthy people can be affected when they feel stressed out emotionally. A classic case is lovesickness. Your stomach feels as though tied up in knots, your nerves are shaky, and after two bites of food you are full. Before long, your body is running out of energy, and you either become sleepy or more nervous — in any case you eat even less and then enter a downward spiral What will you do when your trousers get baggy, your eyes start to widen, your bones and teeth start to stick out, your energy level drops and your sensitiveness rises?
8. What message does Paragraph 1 convey?
A. Being thin is popular among the young. B. Being fat is dangerous for an elderly man.
C. Either being fat or thin can be a health risk. D. Losing weight is harder than gaining weight.
9. When are people more likely to be underweight?
A. When they have no teeth to chew. B. When they suffer from a big illness.
C. When they are addicted to their work. D. When they have a slow metabolism.
10. What is the writing style of the last paragraph?
A. Critical. B. Vivid. C. Abstract. D. Academic.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Weight Matters To Health B. Mind Your Daily Diet
C. Fat Is A Risk Too D. Thin Is Not In
D
Have you ever noticed that you can understand a sentence even if the words are jumbled up or disorganized? You can probably read this easily despite the misspellings. Scientists aren’t completely sure how our brains can read the sentence above, but they think one reason is that our brains analyze the con-text to guess what’s coming next. Research has revealed that when we hear a sound that leads us to expect another sound, the brain reacts as if we’ re already hearing that second sound.
This is similar to how the brain responds to an arrangement of letters or words. As our brain deciphers each word in the example above, it predicts which words will come next to make a sentence that makes sense. “We are always guessing what we will see, hear, or feel next,” says Dr. Lars Muckli, a researcher at the University of Glasgow. But, besides predicting what’s next, our brain also fills in any blanks based on the words that come after.
However, even if we read that mixed-up example easily, we might not have read every word right. We thought we did because we understood the sentence structure. But what if the first and last letters of the word are in place? Could we understand it better?
“It doesn’t matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only impotent thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole.”
According to Matt Davis, a senior researcher at Cambridge’s Cognition and Brain Science Unit, that’s not entirely true. “Clearly, the first and last letter is not the only thing that you use when reading text,” he writes. “If this really was the case, how would you tell the difference between pairs of words like ‘salt’ and ‘slat’?”
12. What function do scientists believe our brains have?
A. They may ignore unnecessary information.
B. They only focus on the first and last letters.
C. They can produce context-based outcome.
D. They can precisely see the future words.
13. What does the underlined word “deciphers” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Interprets. B. Spells. C. Memorizes. D. Pronounces.
14. What is the writing purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A. To demonstrate where the key words are. B. To introduce what elements a paragraph has.
C. To illustrate how the sentence structure matters. D. To show the way the brain processes the words.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Why the brain can read mixed-up letters. B. What messy letters mean to the readers.
C. How random letters can form meanings. D. What if the brain cannot process the sound.

Alex and Eric, two high school seniors filled with a thirst for adventure, decided to kick off a hiking trip through the rough mountains surrounding their small town. Equipped with basic supplies and a spirit of adventure, they set out early one morning, eager to explore the unknown.
The sun shone brightly as they climbed higher, the air growing thinner with each step. The scenery was breathtaking — bushy forests gave way to rocky cliffs (悬崖), and the sound of rushing water echoed through the valleys. But as the day wore on, the weather began to turn. Dark clouds gathered on the horizon, and a chill wind picked up.
“Alex, do you think we should turn back?” Eric asked, his voice full of concern.
Alex hesitated, staring at the sky. “It might pass, but we should be prepared. Let’s find shelter first.”
They pressed on, eventually running across a small cave hidden among the rocks. Inside, they huddled (依偎) together, sharing their limited supplies and waiting for the storm to pass. The hours ticked by, and the rain pounded constantly outside.
“I never imagined it would be like this,” Eric whispered, his teeth chattering
Alex put an arm around him. “Life’s not always smooth sailing Eric. But we’ll get through this together.”
As the night approached, their willpower strengthened. They talked about their dreams, fears, and the lessons they had learned so far. The storm outside seemed to mirror the challenges they faced in life, testing their limits and deepening their bond.
Finally, as dawn broke, the rain stopped. Alex and Eric emerged from the cave, their clothes damp but their spirits high. The mountain air was agreeable and clean, and the view from the mountain top was amazing.
“We made it,” Eric said, smiling through tears of relief and joy.
Alex nodded, his eyes fixed on the horizon. “And we’ll make it through whatever comes next, too.”

C He was satisfied with solving the puzzles.
D 5. B 6. A 7.

A Weight Matters To Health B. Mind Your Daily Diet
C. Fat Is A Risk Too D. Thin Is Not In
C 9. B 10. B 11. D

What will you do when your trousers get baggy, your eyes start to widen, your bones and teeth start to stick out, your energy level drops and your sensitiveness rises?(潜在的健康问题有时也是罪魁祸首。

C 13. A 14. C 15. A

故填What。
根据时间状语As a child可知是描述过去的情况,be impressed with是固定短语,意为“对…… 印象深刻”,主语Konde是单数,且为一般过去时。故填was impressed。
先行词是2022,在从句“______ he went to Strathmore University”中作时间状语,所以用关系副词when引导。故填when。
故填a。
故填is。
此处是固定搭配:the ability to do sth. 故填to keep。

“Alex do you think we should turn back?” Eric asked, his voice full of concern.
“Life’s not always smooth sailing, Eric.

Paragraph 1:
Climbing down the mountain, they encountered a fork (岔路口) in the path. One way led back to civilization, while the other was unknown, clouded in mist. “Which way should we go?” Eric asked, uncertainty creeping into his voice. Alex paused for a while, considering their options. “Let’s take the unknown path. It might lead to something amazing, or it might be a dead end. But either way, it’s an adventure worth having.” With renewed determination, they set off down the misty trail. The journey was treacherous, with slippery rocks and hidden obstacles at every turn. But they navigated it together, supporting each other every step of the way.
As they emerged from the mist, they found themselves standing at the edge of a vast grassland. It was dotted with wildflowers and surrounded by rolling hills. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of freshly bloomed flowers. “Look at this,” Eric breathed, his eyes wide with wonder. Alex smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. “Life may not always be easy, but it’s full of surprises and beauty if we’re brave enough to explore. Today, we faced challenges and overcame them together. That’s what makes this journey — and life itself — so special.” As they continued their adventure, Alex and Eric knew that they had learned a valuable lesson: no matter what obstacles lay ahead, as long as they faced them with courage, resilience, and mutual support, there was no challenge they couldn’t conquer.
