It’s still dark as my husband, brother-in-law, nephew and I walk toward where our boat is waiting. We’re on a family holiday on the west coast of Canada, and the four of us have booked a fishing trip with a local guide. This is my first open-water fishing trip, and I get butterflies in my stomach. We board the boat, and I watch the sky lighten, reflecting on the decision that brought me to this moment.
For most of my adult life, I’d chosen to stay safely in a series of “sheltered harbors”. It took my mother’s death from breast disease at age sixty-five to wake me. My mother lived with courage right to the end of her journey. In contrast, I had let fear play far too big a role in my life. As I reflected on how I wanted to spend my remaining years, I knew I had to make some big changes.
And now, I am living with the decision to be brave. By this point, I’ve already forced myself into a number of courage-building experiences. If my recent adventures have taught me anything, it’s to stay in the moment. To stay calm right now, I focus on my seven-year-old nephew. He’s excited to be out on the water. His excitement is unexpectedly influential. I begin to think that this fishing trip might actually become more than a test of courage. I might enjoy my time at sea.
With this new mindset, everything changes. I stop monitoring myself for the first signs of panic. I take in the sea, the sky, the forested islands to the north, and the snow-capped mountains behind them. There’s salt on my lips and wind in my hair. I’m alive!
Leaving the harbor that morning was just the beginning. I continued to walk further out of my comfort zone for the rest of that year — and every year since. With each new experience, I gained more confidence. Courage, I’ve learned, is a muscle that gets stronger with use.
24. How does the author feel about her first open-water fishing trip at first?
A. Proud. B. Relaxed. C. Disappointed. D. Nervous.
25. Why does the author take the open-water trip?
A. To challenge herself. B. To learn a new skill.
C. To bring the family closer. D. To honor her mother’s wishes.
26. What lesson has the author learned from her recent adventures?
A. Family ties are important. B. The present moment is valuable.
C. Travel broadens the mind. D. Experience helps people make wise decisions.
27. What will the author possibly do in the future according to the last paragraph?
A. Do more physical exercise. B. Take a boat to explore farther.
C. Continue with new adventure. D. Achieve her goals within a year.

Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
28. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?
A. Its business culture.
B. Its small population.
C. Its geographical position.
D. Its favourable climate.
29. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.
B. One out of five people got rich.
C. Almost everyone gave up.
D. Half of them died.
30. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?
A. They found the city too crowded.
B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
C. They were unable to stand the winter.
D. They were short of food.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of a city.
B. The gold rush in Canada.
C. Journeys into the wilderness.
D. Tourism in Dawson.

Parents annoyed by their little ones’ picky food choices often sigh in anger, thinking, “They’ll grow out of it by college.” Maybe not, suggests a new study from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Some young people continue their picky eating into early adulthood, often restricting their diets to 10 food s or even fewer. Such a deficient diet can mean they’re not getting the fibre (纤维) and vegetables they need, which could be a health problem. The study also suggests picky eaters may also be experiencing other challenges such as social phobias (恐惧症), including around eating. The social phobia is the fear of being judged by others during everyday activities, often resulting in fear or embarrassment.
For the study, researchers surveyed 488 Midwestern college students. About 40% of the students were identified as picky eaters. And about 65% of those respondents said they ate fewer than 10 foods. “We asked participants to just tell us what challenges around picky eating might have had or any benefits they might see, and people answered differently in terms of what has an effect on them,” said co-author Lauren Dial, a doctoral student at Bowling Green State at the time of the study.
Many indicated they’d eat less or not at all outside the home. One 19-year-old man said he’d drink water half the time “due to my picky eating”, according to the study. Another 18-year-old said, “Sometimes there are some awkward comments when I am eating with my girlfriend and her family.” A 23-year-old woman said her parents would get frustrated at her refusal to try the foods she was served.
“Picky eating does have a lot to do with the presentation of foods (how they’re presented on a plate), and the texture (口感) of foods,” Dial said, “but there’s also fear of trying new foods and that might play into picky eating.” By learning more about picky eating in adults, the researchers said they may be able to determine how best to intervene (干预) before the problem becomes more severe for some people.
32. What can best replace the underlined word “deficient” in paragraph 1?
A. High-fibre. B. Low-fat. C. Balanced. D. Limited.
33. What were the participants asked to do during the research?
A. Record how often they eat out.
B. Ignore what influences their eating.
C. Express how picky eating affects them.
D. Count how many kinds of foods they prefer.
34. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3?
A. By presenting data. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following time order. D. By providing examples.
35. What can be inferred about picky eating in the last paragraph?
A. It has something to do with family traditions.
B. It can be easily cured by the researchers.
C. It can have both physical and mental reasons.
D. It often comes along with serious mental illnesses.

Most of the time, you simply don’t know where to start when you want to learn how to be organized. ___36___. By developing a few strategies and methods, you can finally get control of your clutter.

Your desktop should be clean and file-free. Not only does a cluttered desktop slow down your computer, but it also makes finding things painfully slow. Instead, you can create a basic folder structure inside your documents folder. For me, I have two basics folders, one called “work” and the other called “personal.” Inside of these, I have subfolders organized according to my different roles or categories. ___38___.
Set a weekly time to declutter your devices
We take a picture, and we just leave it in our photo album. Over time we end up with thousands of photos in our electronic photo albums that are not worth keeping. I spend around ten minutes on the weekend deleting all the images I no longer want to keep.
If you want to stay clutter-free, this habit will reward you. ___39___. Not doing so means you will end up having to spend a day or two just dealing with everything.
Do a little, often
___40___. Clear out your email inbox every day, delete screenshots from your desktop and empty your bag at the end of the week, and throw away anything you no longer need. Doing a little often makes things so much easier, and you do not have that mental backlog creeping up on you.

You’ll need to make sure that all students are paying attention and doing everything correctly, like we’ve been practicing. Teachers, please try to keep your students as calm as possible. You can use the yellow radios in your desks to communicate with me and other teachers if necessary. No one is allowed to leave the classrooms for any reason until the alarm has stopped.
D. Nervous.

C 29. B 30. B 31. A
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.
Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
根据文章最后一段中and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.
故A正确。
D
D 33. C 34. D 35. C
根据画线词的上一句“Some young people continue their picky eating into early adulthood, often restricting their diets to 10 food s or even fewer. (一些年轻人在成年早期仍然挑食,经常将他们的饮食限制在10种甚至更少的食物。)”可知,这样一种饮食指的是上文提到的一些年轻人挑食,其饮食的种类非常有限。由此推知,deficient意思是“有限的”,与limited意思相近。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“We asked participants to just tell us what challenges around picky eating might have had or any benefits they might see (我们要求参与者告诉我们挑食可能带来的挑战或他们可能看到的好处)”可知,该研究中参与者需要表达挑食是如何影响他们的。
根据第三段中的“One 19-year-old man said he’d drink water half the time “due to my picky eating”, according to the study. Another 18-year-old said, “Sometimes there are some awkward comments when I am eating with my girlfriend and her family.” A 23-year-old woman said her parents would get frustrated at her refusal to try the foods she was served. (研究显示,一名19岁的男子表示,“因为挑食”,他有一半的时间都在喝水。另一位18岁的网友说:“有时候,当我和女朋友及其家人一起吃饭时,会听到一些尴尬的评论。”一名23岁的女子说,她的父母会因为她拒绝尝试提供给她的食物而感到沮丧。)”可知,在本段中作者主要介绍了三个挑食的年轻人的具体事例,因此主要是通过举例来展开段落的。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Picky eating does have a lot to do with the presentation of foods (how they’re presented on a plate), and the texture (口感) of foods,” Dial said, “but there’s also fear of trying new foods and that might play into picky eating.” (“挑食确实与食物的摆盘(它们在盘子上的呈现方式)和食物的质地有很大关系,”Dial说,“但也有对尝试新食物的恐惧,这可能会导致挑食。”)”可知,食物的摆盘和质地、对尝试新食物的恐惧都有可能导致挑食。由此可知,挑食既有外在的原因又有心理上的原因。故选C项。

How to Get Organized: The Ultimate Guide to a Clutter-Free Life
With all the inputs, information, and clutter (杂乱) that come into our lives today, just staying on top of it all creates so much stress and anxiety. Most of the time, you simply don’t know where to start when you want to learn how to be organized. ___36___. By developing a few strategies and methods, you can finally get control of your clutter.
___37___
In short, getting organized and keeping clutter at bay is achievable through practical, consistent steps. These habits not only save time and reduce stress but also help you maintain a more orderly and manageable daily routine.
A. Make it a habit to clear your desktop annually
B. Don’t use your computer’s desktop for storage
C. However, it is, in fact, something that can be learned
D. It allows me to quickly find what I need when necessary
E. Here are a few rules that can help you on your path to a stress-free life
F. If you want to be organized, you can use this principle for almost everything
G. Doing this means you will spend thirty minutes each week cleaning up and filing
C 37. B 38. D 39. G 40. F
上文“Most of the time, you simply don’t know where to start when you want to learn how to be organized.(大多数时候,当你想学习如何变得有条理时,你根本不知道从哪里开始)”说明人们在面对杂乱时的困惑。后文“By developing a few strategies and methods, you can finally get control of your clutter.(通过制定一些策略和方法,你最终可以控制你的杂乱)”说明这是可以学会的。
下文“Your desktop should be clean and file-free. Not only does a cluttered desktop slow down your computer, but it also makes finding things painfully slow.(你的桌面应该干净,没有文件。杂乱的桌面不仅会降低你的电脑速度,还会让找东西变得非常慢)”说明本段讲的是不要用桌面存储文件。空处为本段段首主旨句,所以B项“不要把电脑桌面当作存储工具。”是对下文的概括。
【38题详解】
上文“Inside of these, I have subfolders organized according to my different roles or categories.(在这些文件夹里,我又根据不同的角色或类别建立了子文件夹)”说明文件夹的分类方法。
上文“If you want to stay clutter-free, this habit will reward you.(如果你想保持整洁,这个习惯会给你回报)”说明每周清理设备的好处。 下文“Not doing so means you will end up having to spend a day or two just dealing with everything.(不这样做意味着你最终将不得不花一两天时间来处理所有事情)”用“Not doing so”指代空处内容,说明如果不这样做就要花一两天处理,所以G项“这样做意味着你每周花三十分钟来清理和归档。”
下文“Clear out your email inbox every day, delete screenshots from your desktop and empty your bag at the end of the week, and throw away anything you no longer need.(每天清空你的电子邮件收件箱,删除桌面上的截图,在周末清空你的包,扔掉任何你不再需要的东西)”列举了各种场景下的小习惯。
