Last Friday witnessed a speech contest held in our school auditorium.
The contest, which was themed “Get to know natural disasters”, was aimed to help students get a better understanding of various disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and storms as well as their potential impacts on the environment and people’s lives. Participants were rated by a panel of judges from the teaching staff. The top three students were presented with certificates and gifts in reward for their outstanding performances.
This activity turned out to be a great success. Not only did it promote students’ awareness of disaster prevention but it also boosted their confidence in voicing their own opinions.
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Kwan took several wrapping clothes to school. At the sight of those clothes, some of his classmates shook their heads, murmuring words of disappointment. Kwan's face turned radish red, his forehead feeling hot. At that moment, Miss Gibbs’ sonorous voice sounded, "Aren't these embroidered patterns beautiful? It is Kwan who made it." Suddenly, the classroom fell silent at Miss Gibbs’ words as if she had cast a spell on them. Without a word,Kwan took a needle and a thread, which worked like magic in his hands and soon an elegant blooming rose pattern appeared on the wrapping cloth. Thunderous applause broke out, all the students feverishly pouring their admiration and praise upon Kwan.
Paragraph 2:
As Kwan listened to his classmates, he noticed that his forehead no longer felt hot. Awkwardness and embarrassment gave way to an overwhelmingly strong sense of pride and happiness. For the rest of the class, Kwan shared some fundamental knowledge and skills with his classmates. Under the guidance of Kwan, they successfully made some embroidery patterns on their own. This experience not only brought Kwan closer to his classmates but also changed his attitude towards his secret talent. Rather than feeling embarrassed, he realized that inheriting and carrying forwards traditional craftsmanship is something to be proud of.

CHRISTMAS 2020 was shaping up to be a heartbreaker for Melanie Lee. A few weeks earlier, her 33- year- old son had lost his battle with a long illness. Then the transmission (变速器) on her2007 car broke down. She had no means of paying for it to be fixed.
“When it broke down, I broke down,” Lee told CNN. “Now I don’t have my baby, now I don’t have transportation. How am I supposed to stay active in my grandchildren’s lives?”
Eliot Middleton, 38, the owner of a barbecue restaurant and former auto mechanic who, in his free time, repairs and gives away used cars. He’d heard about Lee’s difficulty from her nephew Frank McClary. On Christmas morning, Middleton showed up at Lee’s home with a gift: a white1993 Oldsmobile.
“He handed me the keys and didn’t ask for anything.” said Lee. Once again, she’s able to pick up her granddaughters from school and take them to dance class. The idea for the used- car giveaway came to Middleton a year earlier during a food drive he’d organized. Many of those who’d lined up for a meal walked up to four miles because they didn’t have cars.
Cars are a lifeline in this part of South Carolina, Middleton told CBS. “There’s no public transportation, no Ubers, no taxis to take people to job interviews, doctor appointments, even food shopping. So he posted on Facebook an offer to trade his restaurant’s specialty, barbecued ribs (烤排骨), for broken- down vehicles. Since then, friends and strangers have dropped off more than100 cars in various states of disrepair.
“People think Eliot is an angel,” Mayor McClary told the Washington Post. “And I do too.”
24.What happened to Lee around Christmas 2020?
A.Her car was lost. B.The Christmas upset her.
C.Her son was seriously ill. D.She suffered misfortunes.
25.In what way did Middleton help Lee?
A.He gave away a car to Lee.
B.He sold a second- hand car to Lee.
C.He invited Lee to eat in his restaurant.
D.He picked up Lee’s grandchildren from school.
26.How did Middleton get so many second- hand cars?
A.By posting an offer for car donation.
B.By exchanging his food with car owners.
C.By cooking best- selling food in his restaurant.
D.By buying abandoned cars and repairing them.
27.What can be the best title for this story?
A.Kindness on Auto B.Trade Cars for Food
C.Heartbreaker or Angel D.Freedom Guaranteed by Cars

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
28.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?
A.They are trying to cure diseases. B.They would like to digest what they eat.
C.They feel like occupying the land. D.They are attracting companions’ attention.
29.What do researchers find through camera-traps?
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.
B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.
D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals.
30.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Characteristics. B.Populations. C.Similarities. D.Flexibilities.
31.What is the possible significance of the discovery?
A.Promoting evolution of creatures. B.Increasing the production of resin.
C.Contributing to forest conservation. D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.
D
Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways branch out like tree limbs to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. Our bodies make vessels naturally, but bioengineers also want to make them artificially. And now a team of engineers has found a cool new way to do that in the lab: They use ice.
To make the vessels, the engineers first needed a template (模板) from which to build the tissue. “Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” says Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer who’s leading the new vessel-building project at Carnegie Mellon University. But wax proved “too soft,” he says. “And it’s not necessarily biocompatible (生物兼容的),” or suitable for use in the body. Then they thought of Elsa’s magic in a Disney movie Frozen.
Ice seemed like a good alternative to wax. It costs little and is readily available. And since it’s not poisonous, the body won’t reject it. And printing the ice template is simple. First, engineers program its shape into a 3-D printer. The printer then drops water onto a very cold surface. The printer repeats this process until the vessel’s shape is complete. In all, it takes less than 30 seconds. This icy vessel template is then encased in gelatin, a clear substance without any taste. Shining ultraviolet light on the gelatin hardens it as the ice melts away. What’s left are realistic-looking channels for blood to move through.
So far, the Carnegie Mellon team has tested the gel channels with endothelial cells. These are the cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. In one experiment, those cells survived two weeks lining the artificial vessels. This is promising, but there is still a long way to go before such replacement vessels could be transplanted into people.
In the future, such artificial vessels could be used as part of lab-made organs to save the lives of people urgently awaiting donated organs for transplant. “This is really a game changer,” says Ozdoganlar.
32.What inspired the team of engineers to use ice instead?
A.The movie Frozen. B.Its low cost.
C.The new project. D.Its easy availability.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The differences between ice and wax.
B.The reason for printing the ice template.
C.The application of 3-D printing technology.
D.The advantages of ice as vessel printing stuff.
34.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The lab can mass produce organs for use.
B.The technology is not yet mature at this point.
C.The artificial vessels will be put to use soon.
D.The organ transplantation is easier to perform.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To sing high praise for engineers’ work.
B.To make known a technical innovation.
C.To promote vessels made by using ice.
D.To encourage technological innovation.

Why dogs chase their tails? There are some answers to this question, which might surprise you. While tail chasing can be a harmless behavior, sometimes it can indicate a potential issue requiring a vet visit. Below are some common meanings behind your dog chasing its tail.
36
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun. 37 Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling left out, so make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.
Your dog is feeling stressed.
On the other hand, uncontrollable tail- chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is anxious or stressed. 38 By the way, this fruitless and frustrating behavior is what led to the saying “like a dog chasing its tail”.
Your dog wants your attention.
Tail- chasing is actually a go- to behavior for young dogs who are playing and learning about their bodies. And it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s funny and adorable. But this type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it. Try not to encourage this behavior. 39
Your dog may have intestinal parasites
This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too. Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated. 40 If your dog is chasing their tail a lot, it’s best to rule out any medical issues first, so always get in touch with your vet who will be able to examine them and find the root of the problem.
A.Your dog wants exercise.
B.Your dog is expressing its emotion.
C.Your pup will form the habit of tail chasing.
D.Instead, provide a distraction by giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.
E.Find out what’s at the root of your dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.
F.Common types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.
G.If a dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.

Kwan's Secret Talent
"Kwan, isn't that your art teacher?" his grandmother said, pointing at a woman walking out of the grocery store. Kwan waved, and Mrs. Gibbs walked over to him and his grandmother. "It's very nice to see you," Mrs. Gibbs said. Then she saw the cloths wrapped around the groceries Kwan and his grandmother were loading into their car. "Oh, how beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"Thank you. These are our hometown wrapping cloths," grandmother explained. "Kwan and I embroidered(刺绣)them together.” Kwan looked away. Although he enjoyed helping grandmother make the cloths, he didn't want anyone at school to know about it.
"Kwan, you should bring your cloths to school tomorrow. Your classmates would enjoy seeing them. You have a unique skill,” Mrs. Gibbs said.
Kwan appreciated his teacher's comments, but he was hesitant. The kids might laugh at the idea of a boy who liked to stitch(缝) patterns with a needle and thread. He thought about his grandmother’s wide smile that showed how proud of him she would be for sharing this custom.
"O.K. I'll bring some to class tomorrow," Kwan replied quietly. Grandma sensed that something was wrong. "Kwan, are you worried about tomorrow?" she asked. Kwan stared at the floor. "What are the other kids going to think?" he said. "This isn't the kind of thing they do for fun. Creating embroidered patterns isn't like playing an instrument or a sport."
"You're right," Grandma said. "It is different. But that is why it is so special." Then she brought out a fine cloth with different designs. "When your grandfather and I were married, we received a gift from his mother wrapped in this cloth she made. In our culture, gifts given in wrapping cloths are extra special because they are a symbol of love and good luck." she explained.

Good evening, passengers. On behalf of the United Airlines pilots and ticket counter clerks, I regret to tell you the extended delay tonight. Our team closely keeps an eye on the air traffic at this airport. We believe the current weather conditions are too risky to make a safe departure. Due to the increasing level of this snowstorm, many flights have already been cancelled, but luckily, we've managed to hold our primary place in line for departure, once the weather conditions improve. Unfortunately, that might not be until tomorrow, and airport hotels are almost entirely occupied .For our elderly passengers here, we have a few beds available in the airport lounge. Still, the majority of passengers will have to rest in the terminal chairs and benches tonight. We will provide pillows and blankets for all. Many of you are flying for the holidays, and I'd like to remind everyone that helping you arrive home on time is a main priority——second, of course, only to safety. We will be hearing more updates from the weather team within the next hour. The moment we receive this news, we will announce the additional information. We're sorry for your waiting. And thank you for your patience and cooperation.

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.A
根据第一段“CHRISTMAS 2020 was shaping up to be a heartbreaker for Melanie Lee. A few weeks earlier, her 33- year- old son had lost his battle with a long illness. Then the transmission(变速器)on her2007 car broke down. She had no means of paying for it to be fixed.(对梅兰妮·李来说,2020年圣诞节将是一个令人心碎的日子。几个星期前,她33岁的儿子在与长期疾病的斗争中失败了。然后,她2007年的那辆车的变速箱坏了。她没有钱请人修。)”可知,2020年圣诞节前后,李经历了失去儿子和汽车出故障等多种不幸。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段的最后一句“On Christmas morning, Middleton showed up at Lee’s home with a gift: a white1993 Oldsmobile.(圣诞节的早晨,米德尔顿带着一份礼物出现在李的家中:一辆1993年的白色奥兹莫比尔。)”和第四段的句子““He handed me the keys and didn’t ask for anything.” said Lee. Once again, she’s able to pick up her granddaughters from school and take them to dance class.(“他把钥匙递给我,没有要求任何东西。”李说。再一次,她能够从学校接她的孙女,带她们去上舞蹈课。)”可知,米德尔顿赠送了一辆汽车给李。故选A项。
根据第五段的句子“So he posted on Facebook an offer to trade his restaurant’s specialty, barbecued ribs, for broken-down vehicles. 27.主旨大意题。本文主要报道的是烧烤店老板米德尔顿用他餐馆的特色菜烧烤排骨换来二手车,然后赠送给那些需要的人。所以用A项“Kindness on Auto(汽车上的善举)”作为本文的题目,与文章主题相符合。故选A项。
C
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.B 31.C
根据第二段“During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.(在其中一项日常研究中,研究人员观察到绢毛猴在树干上摩擦身体。起初,研究人员认为它们是在标记自己的领地,这是这种物种的常见行为。植物学专家后来证实,这棵树是一种以其药用特性而闻名的红檀香)”可知,绢毛猴要在树上摩擦自己是想要治疗疾病。故选A。
根据第三段“Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).(共观察到10种动物。对它们中的许多来说,这是第一次观察到类似于自我药物治疗的行为。更令人惊讶的是,一个物种会成对地在对方的皮毛上涂抹树脂。一般来说,这些物种似乎专门访问树来获取树脂,并从中受益,要么治愈伤口,要么击退寄生虫)”可知,研究人员通过隐藏的相机发现树脂可以用作一些动物的药。故选D。
30.词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句句意“It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.(这很可能是一种宝贵的资源,通过改善它们的健康状况来帮助物种保持它们的magnitude)”可知,此处指通过改善健康来保持该物种的数量,magnitude指“数量”,故选B。
根据最后一段“This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.(这一发现可能会对保护产生重要影响,因为一些树木的消失可能会影响一些动物的生存)”可知,这一发现的可能意义是有助于森林保护。故选C。
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B 35.B
根据文章第二段““Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” says Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer who’s leading the new vessel-building project at Carnegie Mellon University. But wax proved “too soft,” he says. “And it’s not necessarily biocompatible (生物兼容的),” or suitable for use in the body. Then they thought of Elsa’s magic in a Disney movie Frozen.(“最初,我们尝试使用蜡来做这件事,”卡内基梅隆大学负责新血管制造项目的机械工程师Ozdoganlar说。 故选A。
根据文章第三段“Ice seemed like a good alternative to wax. It costs little and is readily available. And since it’s not poisonous, the body won’t reject it. And printing the ice template is simple.(冰似乎是蜡的一个很好的替代品。它成本低廉且易于获得。而且因为它无毒,所以身体不会排斥它。打印冰模板也很简单。)”以及全段内容可知,本段主要讲述了使用冰作为血管打印材料的优点,包括成本低廉、易于获得、无毒以及易于打印等。因此,该段主要讨论了冰作为血管打印材料的优势。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In one experiment, those cells survived two weeks lining the artificial vessels. This is promising, but there is still a long way to go before such replacement vessels could be transplanted into people.(在一项实验中,这些细胞在人工血管内壁存活了两周。这很有希望,但在这种替代血管能够移植到人体之前,还有很长的路要走。)”可知,虽然人工血管已经在实验室中进行了测试,并且内皮细胞在人工血管内壁存活了两周,但是要将这种替代血管移植到人体中还需要很长时间的研究和发展。因此,我们可以推断出这项技术目前还不成熟,还需要进一步的研究和发展。故选B。
35.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways branch out like tree limbs to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. Our bodies make vessels naturally, but bioengineers also want to make them artificially. And now a team of engineers has found a cool new way to do that in the lab: They use ice.(皮肤下的血管高速公路运输血液和营养物质。这些自然通道像树枝一样伸展开来,帮助我们的身体将食物和氧气输送到我们的器官。我们的身体会自然地制造血管,但生物工程师也想人工制造血管。现在,一组工程师在实验室里找到了一种很酷的新方法:他们使用冰。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了工程师们使用冰来制造血管的新技术,并详细描述了该技术的优点和实验过程。作者的主要目的是让读者了解这一技术创新。故选B。

36.空格处是该部分的主题句,根据下文的句子“It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun.(这对人类来说可能是一种奇怪的活动,但对狗来说,追尾巴是一种简单的放松和娱乐的方式。)”和“Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling left out, so make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.(只要记住,一只经常感到无聊或压力大的狗可能会感到被冷落,所以要确保它的基本需求得到满足,包括锻炼和社交。)” 所以,B项“Your dog is expressing its emotion.(你的狗在表达它的情感。)”
37.根据空格前的句子“It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun.(这对人类来说可能是一种奇怪的活动,但对狗来说,追尾巴是一种简单的放松和娱乐的方式。)”可知, 追尾巴是狗的一种娱乐方式,为什么它们会采取这种娱乐方式呢?G项“If a dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.(如果一只狗没有任何东西或任何人可以玩,它可能需要娱乐自己。)”
38.根据空格前的句子“On the other hand, uncontrollable tail- chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is anxious or stressed.(另一方面,无法控制的追尾行为可能是你的狗焦虑或有压力的警告信号。)”可知,追尾巴表明你的狗可能焦虑或有压力,这种情况下应该怎样做呢?E项“Find out what’s at the root of your dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.(找出你的狗焦虑的根源,然后解决这个问题。)”
39.根据空格前的句子“And it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s funny and adorable. But this type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it. Try not to encourage this behavior.(当你看到这种情况发生时,很难不微笑,尤其是在小狗身上,因为这很有趣,也很可爱。 但是这种类型的反应会导致你的狗狗继续这样做。 尽量不要鼓励这种行为。)”可知,作者建议不要用微笑这样的行为鼓励狗的追尾巴行为,那么见到狗追尾巴应该怎样做呢?D项“Instead, provide a distraction by giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.(相反,给你的狗一个新玩具或散散步来分散注意力。)”
40.根据该部分的主题句“Your dog may have intestinal parasites(你的狗可能有肠道寄生虫)”和空格前的句子“This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too. Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated.(这是狗追逐尾巴的另一个常见原因。这也是狗咬尾巴的原因之一。感染在幼犬中很常见,如果不及时治疗,一些幼犬甚至可能致命。)”可知,空格处的句子应该涉及到狗可能会感染的寄生虫,所以,F项“Common types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.(常见的寄生虫有绦虫、蛔虫、钩虫等。)”

Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Kwan took several wrapping clothes to school. At the sight of those clothes, some of his classmates exchanged puzzled looks, whispering fervently with each other.
(He thought about his grandmother’s wide smile that showed how proud of him she would be..),
一看到…:at the sight of……
