Trees can keep a record of Earth’s climate (气候) for a very long time. In fact trees can live for hundreds—and sometimes even thousands of years!
If you see a stump (树桩), you may find that the top of the stump has many rings. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.

①Lidong, or the Start of Winter, is the 19th solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar and usually falls in November. It marks the beginning of winter and tells people that colder days are coming. In ancient times, this was an important day, as a symbol of the end of autumn and the start of a season to rest and prepare for the cold weather ahead.

③In southern parts of China, such as Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan, there is a popular tradition called “yangdong”. On the day of Lidong, people eat nourishing and high-calorie foods, such as chicken, beef, and mutton. These foods help to strengthen the body and prepare for the cold winter months. The idea is that by eating well at the start of winter, people can stay healthy and strong during the cold days ahead.
④In Guangxi, the Mulam ethnic group (仫佬族) holds a special festival after Lidong called the Yifan Festival. It is usually celebrated every three to five years. During this festival, they make offerings, drink white liquor, and even mix the drink with chicken blood. This festival is an important part of their culture and a way to celebrate the harvest and prepare for winter.

Table manners are different in each country, showing the customs and traditions of that place. Knowing these differences can help you enjoy meals in other countries without making mistakes. Here are some examples of table manners from around the world.
In China, be careful with chopsticks. Never stick them upright into a bowl of rice, because it looks like a funeral (葬礼). People often share food from big plates in the middle of the table. Use the opposite end of your chopsticks or serving spoons to take food. Slurping (出声地吃或喝) noodles or soup is polite and shows you are enjoying the food.
In Japan, never pass food from one set of chopsticks to another, as it reminds people of funeral customs. It’s polite to lift small bowls of rice or soup closer to your mouth when eating. Tipping (小费) is not common in Japan, and can be seen as rude.
In France, keep your hands on the table. Bread is placed on the table, and it’s polite to break it with your hands. Meals are slow and relaxed in France, so eating quickly is not polite.
In India, many people eat with their hands, especially traditional food. Use only your right hand, as the left hand is considered unclean. Leaving a little food on your plate shows that you are full. Eating everything may mean you are still hungry.
In the United States, people often use the “zigzag” method when eating, which means cutting food with one hand and then switching the fork to the other hand. Tipping is very important in the U.S., with 15-20% of the bill being the usual tip for good service. Slurping or making loud noises while eating is not polite.

China’s FAST, the world’s largest radio telescope, is in Guizhou Province.
Imagine a giant pan in a big, round hole in Guizhou. This isn’t just any pan; it’s China’s 500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (500米口径球面射电望远镜), or FAST for short. People also call it the “Sky Eye”.
FAST is the world’s biggest radio telescope. It’s so big that it covers an area as large as 30 soccer fields! It was finished in 2016 and started working in 2020.
One of FAST’s main jobs is to find pulsars, which are like the “GPS of space”. Pulsars can help people find their way back to Earth if they travel to the moon or Mars. So far, FAST has discovered over 800 pulsars (脉冲星)!
FAST is also amazing at finding signals (信号) from space. It’s even better at this than the second biggest telescope in the world. It can “see” things that are 13.7 billion light years away! This means if you made a phone call from the moon, FAST could hear it very clearly.
Since March 2021, China has opened FAST to the whole world. It has helped scientists from 16 countries and regions by giving them nearly 6,400 hours of observation (观测) time.
The team that looks after FAST is always trying to make it better. They’ve introduced five smart robots to help clean, fix, and change parts of the telescope. This makes it much easier to take care of and use.
So, that’s FAST, the world’s biggest and most amazing radio telescope!

In India many people eat with their hands, especially traditional food.

【答案】例文
My Little Happiness
Life is full of little moments that make us feel truly happy. For me, one of those moments was when I helped my sister, Emma, with her math homework.
One evening, Emma was really struggling with a tough math problem. She looked so frustrated, so I decided to sit down beside her and help her out. I explained the problem step by step, and after a bit of effort, she finally understood it! Her face lit up with a huge smile, and she said, “Thank you, brother!”
Seeing her so happy made me feel really good inside. It wasn’t anything fancy or special, just a simple moment of sharing and caring. It reminded me that sometimes, the smallest things in life can bring us the most joy.
That evening, I learned that happiness doesn’t always have to be something big and grand. Sometimes, it’s just about being there for the people we love and seeing their smiles. And that’s my little happiness.
