B Twenty-one years ago, Eric Moussambani became the first swimmer from Equatorial Guinea, one of the smallest countries on the African. continent, to compete in the Olympics. He recorded the slowest men's 100m freestyle ever in the Olympics, swimming so slowly that he almost drowned, but he left a deep impression on the audience. As Moussambani prepared for Sydney, he conducted most of his training in a hotel pool, which was only 13 meters long and fell far short of Olympic level. He spent time in rivers and lakes. Moreover, his coaching came from fishermen, who tried to adjust Moussambani's arm and leg movements to prevent sinking Upon his arrival in Sydney, Moussambani was struck by the sights of the foreign city and the size of the Olympic Village. But Moussambani was overwhelmed by the Olympic pool, which was surrounded by seating for 17,500 audience. "When I saw the swimming pool for the first time, I was so scared. The pool was so big for me," he said. Of three swimmers, the other two swimmers were disqualified for starting the race too early, leaving a frightened Moussambani as the only man in his race. Although he maintained a consistent speed during the opening section, he couldn't be in a harmonious breathing pattern. In the final half of the race, he struggled to stay afloat so much that those on the sidelines(两侧场外区域)considered jumping in and helping him out of the water. Finally, Moussambani touched the wall, stopping the clock in 1:52:72. Of course, there was no medal awarded to Moussambani. But he was treated as a celebrity for his inspiring swim. "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering, but fighting well." The description fits Moussambani perfectly. C A Swiss company that developed technology to capture (捕获) carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air says it has launched the world’s largest plant to do so in Iceland. The company said the plant began operations on Wednesday. The company partnered with Icelandic carbon storage provider Carbfix on the project. It says the new plant called Orca whose name is based on the Icelandic word for energy, Oirka, is designed to capture up to 3,600 metric tons of CO2 per year. That is the same amount of CO2 produced by about 790 automobiles during a year. The International Energy Agency, IEA, estimates that this year, the amount of CO2 emissions (排放) worldwide will rise 1.5 billion metric tons to a total of 33 billion metric tons. Direct air capture is one of the few technologies that can remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. Many scientists see the process as critical to limiting harmful pollutant emissions. Such emissions are caused mainly by human activities. They can trap heat in the atmosphere and create higher temperatures. Many scientists blame this warming for increased heatwaves, wildfires, floods and rising sea levels across the world. Orca uses eight large containers that look like those used in the shipping industry. A series of high-tech filters (过滤器) and blowers attached to the containers capture CO2. The captured carbon is then mixed with water and deposited deep underground, where it slowly turns into rock. Both technologies are powered by renewable energy from a nearby geothermal (地热) plant. Direct air capture is still a new and costly technology. But developers hope to bring down the price by increasing operations as more companies and individuals seek the technology. Currently, there are 15 direct air capture plants operating worldwide. The American oil company Occidental is currently developing the largest direct air capture center. It aims to pull 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air around some of its Texas oilfields. 8 What is Orca? A. A kind of energy. B. A Swiss company. C. A high-tech factory. D. A developed technology. 9. What do scientists think of direct air capture? A. It can stop global temperature rising. B. It is crucial to deal with air pollution. C. It is of great use for disaster prediction. D. It can limit the amounts of gases in the air. 10. What does the underlined word “deposited” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Stored. B. Discovered. C. Recycled. D. Exposed. 11. What can we infer about direct air capture from the last paragraph? A. It will increase oil production. B. It has shown little practical value. C. It costs too much to improve it. D. It would have a bright future. D In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their “true self”. Another group of students were asked to write about their “everyday self" and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore. After the writing task, the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life. The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays. Their assumption (设想)is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self, the more likely one authentically (真实地)connects with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those writing about their everyday selves or about the campus bookstore, the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life. However, when people wrote about their true selves, the more detailed the essay was, the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life. To live a meaningful life, then, make sure you are in touch with yourself. If you don't follow your own values and dreams, you are most probably following values set by others. And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream. As some wise-cracker has put it, it is better to be yourself, as everyone else is already taken. Meaningfulness is about connection. While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate, caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about, you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself. Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell. Only by knowing what you are, can you start to authentically connect with others. So,set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person, what are your most important values, and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life. Then figure out how you could make that “true self” more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work. 12. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The process of a study. B. The meaning of life. C. Three groups of students. D. A writing task of evaluating life. 13. What's the finding of the researchers? A. “Everyday self” connects with the campus bookstore. B. More various essays interpret life meaning better. C. The participants with detailed essays have a more meaningful life. D. More “true self” description makes one experience life meaning better. 14. What can make you truly connect with others? A. Following values and dreams set by others. B. Being the author of your own life. C. Changing “everyday self” into “true self”. D. Being able to contribute to society. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A Connect with Life - Dream Is Valued B. Why Not Pursue Goals You Find Useful? C. Be Yourself — Everyone Else Is Taken D. Anyone can be inspired by what Moussambani achieved because we've all been where he was. On his own, out of his depth, and just trying to stay afloat. 4. What can we know about Moussambani? A. He was the first swimmer from Africa. B. He practiced in standard swimming pools. C. He set the slowest. time in men's 100m freestyle D. He accepted training from professional coaches. 5. 8. What is Orca? 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项最新技术发明,它可以直接捕获空气中的二氧化碳然后将它处理掉。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段首句“A Swiss company that developed technology to capture (捕获) carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air says it has launched the world’s largest plant to do so in Iceland.(一家瑞士公司开发了直接从空气中捕获二氧化碳的技术,该公司表示已经在冰岛建立了世界上最大的发电厂。)”和第二段中“It says the new plant called Orca whose name is based on the Icelandic word for energy, Oirka, is designed to capture up to 3,600 metric tons of CO2 per year.(这家名为Orca的新工厂的名字来源于冰岛语中能源的意思Oirka,它的设计目标是每年捕获3600吨二氧化碳。)”可知,Orca是一家新的高新技术工厂。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“Many scientists see the process as critical to limiting harmful pollutant emissions.(许多科学家认为,这一过程对于限制有害污染物的排放至关重要。)”可知,科学家们认为该技术对于治理空气污染至关重要。故选B。 【10题详解】 词义猜测题。根据文章第四段画线词前半句“The captured carbon is then mixed with water(捕获的碳之后与水混合)”和后半句“where it slowly turns into rock.(在那里慢慢变成岩石。)”可知,捕获的碳之后与水混合,沉积在地下深处,在那里慢慢变成岩石。所以deposited是“沉积,存放”的意思。故选A。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Currently, there are 15 direct air capture plants operating worldwide. The American oil company Occidental is currently developing the largest direct air capture center.(目前,全球有15家直接空气捕获厂在运营。美国石油公司西方石油公司目前正在开发最大的直接空气捕获中心。)”可推断,这种技术将会有一个美好的前景。故选D。 D In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their “true self”. A. Connect with Life - Dream Is Valued B. Why Not Pursue Goals You Find Useful? C. Be Yourself — Everyone Else Is Taken D. Why Not Build Caring Relationships with Yourself? 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. To begin with, in terms of intellectual development, teachers, who are professionally educated and experienced in teaching, play a more crucial role than parents, as they can help the children acquire knowledge and develop necessary skills more effectively. Additionally, social skills and cooperative skills, which are significant in children’s future development, can also be better cultivated through communication with peers or participation in various activities rather than the interaction with parents.
