(Mike is telling a story. It happened when he was seven.)
It was New Year’s Eve. In the morning, I heard Grandma tell Mum she needed a football for the New Year’s Eve dinner.
“A football for the dinner? What’s it for?” I wondered. “Anyway, I will get one! I can do something nice for Grandma.”
I remembered my friend Joe had an old football. I went out quietly and found him. I gave him my favourite model car in exchange for his football.
I took the football home, shined it and put it on the living room table secretly. I waited in my room for Grandma to notice it.
“Mike!” Mum shouted. I ran to the living room. “Why can’t you put your things where they belong? Get the football out of here!”
“But it’s for Grandma! She said she needed a football for the New Year’s Eve dinner.” I said.
“A football for the dinner?” Mum laughed. “No, Grandma needs a fruit bowl, not a football.”
“Fruit bowl sounds like football! I have done a silly thing!” I went back to my room, embarrassed and disappointed.
Before dinner, Mum came in and asked me to meet my uncles and aunts. When I walked into the living room, Grandma was showing them a pretty fruit bowl with the old football in its centre, I was surprised.
“Look!” Grandma said. “Today Mike brought me a nice present, this football. Isn’t it beautiful?” She continued. “It’s beautiful, yes — because anything from a child is beautiful.”

"Just because you can't see something, that doesn't mean it's not there. "This old saying is quite meaningful for British sculptor(雕刻家) Willard. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the head of a pin. You can see them clearly only through a microscope(显微镜).
Many people want to own his art pieces. He's been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievements. At every one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. How does he do it?
The answer is very, very carefully. So carefully, in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths. Willard usually works under a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works, he uses the hair from a fly as a paintbrush.
Creating these detailed works is a very long and difficult process, and it isn't always enjoyable." It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish," he says. A single item can take at least several weeks to complete.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort and took time. His interest in creating small things began when he was five. He started creating houses and playgrounds for ants. Willard was not a strong student. He had difficulty in reading and spelling words. Some kids used to call him a loser. This made him feel small, so focusing on lite things helped him to feel big. The smaller his work got, the bigger he felt. A newspaper reporter said, "Willard has shown the world that he is special. Though_______ , he________."

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day?” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen’s ballet dress while Karen put Grace’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn’t dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can’t rely on copying what others are doing.”
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.
88.Did Grace and Karen like Saturdays?
89.When did the twins get up on Saturdays?
90.What was the twins’ plan when they decided to do something different?
91.How did Karen feel at the beginning of the art lesson?
92.Why did the ballet teacher become impatient?
93.What does the underlined part “the grass was not always greener on the other side” at the end of the story try to tell us?

This was my grandmother’s first birthday without grandfather, and before he passed away, we had promised him that we would make it her best birthday ever. Grandfather had always said that grandmother expected her birthday party every day since it was also a time for family reunion (团聚).
When my parents, three sisters and I arrived at her house, we found she had waited up all night for our arrival. Once arriving, we immediately set to prepare for the birthday celebration. We ordered a large birthday cake and decorated the house with colorful belts and balloons. When everything was ready, I noticed something was missing.
“Where is your scarf? ” I asked.
That scarf, faded (褪色的) and even older than my mother, meant a lot to my grandmother. Grandfather gave it to grandmother forty years ago on their first date. But now, on her first birthday without him, the scarf was gone, too.
“It must be somewhere,” she said, “Your grandfather always packed everything so carefully.”
Then we began to search every corner for the missing scarf. As we emptied box after box and found no scarf, my grandmother’s eyes were filled with tears. However, seeing our worried look, she soon hid her disappointment.
“Check it out! This may be a gift from grandfather!” My sister shouted as the found a well-wrapped (精美包装的) box.
Grandmother shakily opened the box. With great joy, she pulled out a brand-new red scarf with a note. Her voice trembled as she read it aloud:
“Dear, I noticed some tiny holes in your scarf when I washed it. So I thought it was time for a new one. I hope it can bring you as much joy as the first one did. Happy birthday! Love, Bryant.”
Finally, grandmother blew out the candles in her new scarf, as if grandfather were still with her. It also brought my grandfather home in each of our hearts and made the party our best birthday celebration ever.
1.Grandmother looked forward to her birthday party, didn’t she?
2.What did the family members do to prepare for grandmother’s birthday party?
3.How long had grandmother owned the old scarf?
4.How did grandmother feel when she couldn’t find the old scarf?
5.Why did grandfather buy a new scarf for grandmother?
6.Besides buying grandmother a new scarf, what other details also show grandfather’s deep love? (List 2 of them)

Dreams, Cheers and tears
JUST think about it: How long is 46 seconds? A computer might take 46 seconds to start up. And it might take you that long to lace up your sneakers. But on August 4, swimmer Pan Zhanle swam 100 meters in 45.92 seconds. With their amazing speed, he and his teammates redefined (重新定义) the game. They became the first non-American team to win the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay in more than 40 years.
That was just one of China’s many breakthrough moments from this summer’s Olympics. Three days earlier, Pan had shocked the world in the men’s 100m freestyle. Like a flying fish, he touched the wall in 46.40 seconds. It was a new world record. Outside the pool, “Queen Wen,” or Zheng Qinwen, won China’s first Olympic tennis gold. Deng Yawen bagged China’s first gold medal in BMX freestyle.
One thing that struck me was how young these champions are. Most of them were born this century. Diver Quan Hongchan already has three Olympic gold medals, yet she is only 17 years old. I spend my days writing for kids, but now, I’m finding myself writing about many of them because, even at their young age, they’ re ready making waves on the world stage.
The gold medalists certainly got the most attention. Some athletes, however, made history even without winning medals. One of them is skater Cui Chenxi. In the women’s skateboarding street final, the 13-year-old finished fourth. It was China’s best result so far in this Olympic event.
Naturally, while some cried tears of joy, others shed tears of regret. Swimmer Zhang Yufei returned home with one silver and five bronze medals but no gold. The 26-year-old isn’t sure about her chances for the 2028 Games. All athletes want gold medals, but “it’s a competitive world.” Zhang said in an interview. “You can’t always get what you want even if you’ve done your best.”
It will be another four years until the next Olympics, but our athletes are already dreaming big. Do you also have a dream? How about chasing it alongside your favorite sports heroes?
7.Which country’s team did Pan Zhanle and his teammates defeat in the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay after more than 40 years?
8.Pan Zhanle set a new world record with a time of 46.40 seconds, didn’t he?
9.What Olympic achievement did Zheng Oinwen make?
10.How did 13-year-old skater Cui Chenxi perform in the women’s skateboarding street final?
11.Why did Swimmer Zhang Yufei return home in tears of regret?
12.Do you think winning gold medals is a good way to measure an athlete’s success? Why or why not?

For skydivers, the sky isn’t the limit. It’s just the beginning. Thousands of people try skydiving each year. Some only jump once, while others go on to experience lifelong adventures, flying and turning over through the air.
Skydiving is a method of leaving an airplane and returning to the earth with the help of gravity (重力), then slowing down by using a parachute (降落伞). It may include more or less free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been used and the body gradually accelerates (加速) to the highest speed.
There are three choices for the beginners. However, before you try skydiving, a ground course on safety is required. The first method is accelerated free-fall. You jump out of the plane while being held by two coaches, one on either side. They hold onto you until you open your parachute. The second method is called static line. After jumping out, you will experience free-fall for a second or two. Then the weight of your body will pull the line tight, opening the parachute. Tandem (串联) is the most popular because it is the easiest. You and the coach are tied together, the coach behind, with you in front. You jump out of the plane together, and the coach takes care of opening the parachute.
For each of these three methods, the coaches give instructions in the air with hand signals or a radio. If you want to try something challenging and would love to feel the freedom of flying, skydiving might be an adventure for you. Who knows? With risk and excitement mixed together, skydiving might just change your life.
13.Do thousands of people try skydiving each year, don’t they?
14.For the beginners, how many methods can they choose?
15.Why do most of the beginners choose tandem?
16.How do the coaches give instructions in the air?
17.What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
18.What do you think of skydiving? Why do you think so?
(24-25九年级上·上海杨浦·期中)The moon was low in the sky as Mia finished loading her pickup truck. She led her two-year-old dog, Buddy, to his cage in the back of the truck. It was two in the morning.
Three days earlier, 12-year-old Jake had gone missing from his Boy Scout camp in the Blue Mountains. Many people searched for him, but they found very few clues. So, they phoned the Search and Rescue Dog Association. Mia and Buddy were part of it. They had trained for a year to help find lost people. Mia remembered what her husband, Dave, had said before she left that morning. “Don’t get your hopes up,” he had warned. But Mia was determined. “Jake has been out there for three days. Buddy can help!” she replied.
When Mia arrived at the meeting point, the rescuers explained that the ground was very rough. They had to move on their hands and knees at times, and none of their dogs had found a smell. Mia let out a breath; it would be a tough job.
At 6 a.m, Mia and the other searchers learned more about Jake. She studied his photo, wanting to remember his face. “Jake is alive,” she told Buddy. “We’re going to find him.”
Mia took out a piece of Jake’s clothing for Buddy to smell. With his nose up, Buddy started down the path. Suddenly, Mia saw Buddy’s head lift. He ran ahead, and Mia quickly followed.
Then she saw Jake in a red jacket, looking weak. “Jake, is that you?” Mia yelled. He nodded slowly. Mia climbed up to him and sat him next to Buddy. “Do you like dogs?” she asked. He nodded again.
While Mia called the base camp, Jake ate some peanut butter crackers. Buddy eagerly ate the leftovers.
Back at the base camp, Mia called Dave. “You won’t believe what Buddy did! He found Jake!”
“Really?” Dave said, surprised. Mia smiled, happy that Buddy had proven him wrong.
19.Mia and Buddy were leaving for the Blue Mountains at about 2 a.m, weren’t they?
20.Why were Mia and Buddy included in the search?

A live-streaming app (直播应用) that monitors (监控) students in classrooms in some middle schools has raised a lot of online discussion. It was reported that any user of the app Shuidi could see inside classrooms. Some parents have praised the app for giving them the chance to monitor their children, while others worry about privacy (隐私) problems. Do you think the app is a good idea?
I strongly support this app. Nowadays, children play an important role in the whole family, and parents always want to care for their children, wherever they are. This new platform (平台) helps parents see what their children are doing in classes. It’s also a good way to make students behave themselves in school.
—— Linda
I’m in favor of this app if parents get their children’s permission (准许) first. The app could help parents focus on children’s bad habits. It could also be used as a tool to prevent bullying (霸凌). However, parents should get their permission first to protect their privacy.
—— Jeff
I think this app is a bad idea. Schools should be a pleasant and relaxing place for students to study and play. But we will feel uncomfortable if cameras are watching us all the time. We should pay attention to our privacy. Our lives shouldn’t be watched by the public.
—— Betty
Any form of privacy invasion (侵犯) shouldn’t be allowed. Although some parents want to know more about their children, they should do it in a better way. Being under the eye of strangers is too dangerous.
—— David
25.Does the living-streaming app monitor students in classrooms in some middle schools?
26.In Linda’s opinion, what does this new platform help both parents and students?
27.According to Jeff, what are the advantages of this app if parents get their permission first to protect their privacy?
28.Why does Betty think this app is a bad idea?
29.What form does David think is too dangerous?

(24-25九年级上·上海黄浦·期中)Doctors say anger can be very dangerous. We have to learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and even cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a peaceful and reasonable way. Some people are so angry that they shout or cry to show their anger. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing (压抑性的) anger.
In the past many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it.
They said that when a person is angry, the brain produces the same hormones (荷尔蒙). Their hearts beat faster and blood pressure goes up. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe if you express anger with strong emotion, you may develop heart disease, and they believe if you keep the anger inside, you may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say we have to learn how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to agree that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself peacefully and reasonably.”
Doctors say that the best way to deal with anger is to find humour in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

(24-25九年级上·上海崇明·期中)Frida Kahlo (弗里达·卡罗) was a Mexican artist. She was born in Coyoacán, near Mexico City, in 1907. Frida grew up in a bright blue house called La Casa Azul with her parents and sisters. When she was six years old, she became ill with polio (小儿麻痹症). The illness left her right leg shorter than her left.
Frida spent a lot of her life in and out of hospitals. She had many health problems, and she suffered a lot of pain. When she was eighteen, she was in a bus accident. She broke a lot of bones and spent many months recovering (康复). It was at this time that Erida started to paint. Many of her paintings from this time are self-portrairs (自画像) that show her pain and suffering.
In 1929, Frida married Diego Rivera, a Mexican artist who was famous for huge paintings on walls. Both artists continued their work and became successful at home and abroad. After they got married, Frida started to wear traditional Mexican clothes and became interested in Mexican folk art. This influenced her paintings, which are very bright and colorful, with a style that was very personal to Frida. However, they continued to show the pain and sadness which she experienced during her life.
Frida’s health condition became worse in 1950. That year she was diagnosed with gangrene (坏疽) in her right foot. She had to lie in bed for the next nine months and had several operations. But with great persistence (毅力), Frida continued to work and paint.
Sadly, Frida died on July 13, 1954, after suffering more and more health problems. Her husband died three years later. Today, Frida and Diego’s home, La Casa Azul, is a very popular museum. (24-25九年级上·上海奉贤·期中)Karlsson, a Swedish teacher at Beijing Union University (BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years. The seeds (种子) of his China journey were sown when he joined in a program for East Asian studies at Lund University in Sweden in 1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet hadn’t yet come into wide use. Learning Chinese meant using textbooks, heavy dictionaries and audio tapes. He would read the dictionary carefully for hours to understand a one-page Chinese article.
“In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.
After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. In 2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he started to teach business at BUU.
Life in Beijing has been a wonderful adventure (异乎寻常的经历), especially as a witness to the great achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU’s partner universities in Russia, Montenegro or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway.
“When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied for a full-time scholarship at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. In 2022, at 44 years old, he got his Ph.D.in economics. “I am quite interested in blockchain technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in blockchain applications outside the cryptocurrency space. So, I always write my articles in this area,” he said.
“________,” he said. “Taking on seemingly impossible challenges and also helping those around you are what makes life worth living.”

Children in the US are active about community service and regard it as a necessary part of their lives. Some schools make community service a requirement for graduation. Let’s look at what students abroad have been doing for their communities.
Shi Siyao, 17, an 11th grader in the US
I chose to attend a programme for handicapped (残疾的) kids in my neighbourhood. The kid I worked with most was a six-year-old boy named Ryan. I had been told that he was always the child who made the teachers crazy. However, my time with Ryan went surprisingly well. It did not take long for me to discover that he was actually a smart little guy, with extraordinary ideas in mind. Sometimes he is naughty just because he is eager to make friends.
Chen Tuo, 17, a 12th grader in the US
Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” I am willing to agree with him. I have been volunteering at the Boston Children’s Hospital every year since I was 13. At the beginning, I only wanted to go because I would get credit (学分) for something as simple as entertaining children at the hospital. After giving my time for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for two months, my opinion changed completely.
Zheng Chenyu, 17, an 11th grader in the US
Last Wednesday, I had my first painting job as a member of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps build and rebuild home for people in need. I remember that, back when my family was decorating our new house, I was so eager to help with the painting of the wall. Unfortunately, I was never allowed to touch the brushes. “You would just ruin the wall and your clothes.” My mum shouted. I felt overjoyed when the school bus carried ten of us to the shelter. I would finally have a chance to paint the wall myself.
49.Is community service a requirement for graduation in all American schools?
50.How old was the kid Shi Siyao worked with most in her neighbourhood?
51.What did Shi Siyao think of the boy named Ryan?

(24-25九年级上·上海黄浦·阶段练习)Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
The Lost World
by Arthur Conan Doyle
Professor George Challenger and his friend LordJohn Roxton, with a reporter and some local guides (one of whom is called Gomez), travel up the Amazon River to find a plain. Challenger claims (声称) he has visited the plain before, and that there are prehistoric creatures living there. Also with them is another professor who dislikes Challenger and doesn’t believe his claims. The reporter narrates (叙述) the story.
The very next day we did actually make our start upon this remarkable exploration. We found that all our stuff fitted very easily into the two canoes, and we divided our members, six in each, in the interests (利益) of peace, of putting one Professor into each canoe.
At dawn and at sunset the monkeys screamed and the parrots started making their high-pitched noise, but during the hot hours of the day only the loud noise of the insects, like the beat of a distant surf, filled the ear, while nothing moved among the serious views of huge tree-trunks, fading away into the darkness which held us in.
And yet there were signs that even human life itself was not far from us in those mysterious dark corners. On the third day out we were aware of a strange, deep, rhythmic beat in the air, coming and going on-and-off throughout the morning. The two boats were moving within a few yards of each other when first we heard it, and our guides froze, as if they had been turned to bronze, listening very carefully with expressions of terror upon their faces.
“What is it, then?” I asked.
“Drums,” said Lord John, carelessly, “War drums. I have heard them before.”
“Yes, sir, war drums,” said Gomez. “Native people, aggressive, not friendly; they watch us every mile of the way; kill us if they can.”
“How can they watch us?” I asked, staring into the dark Gomez shrugged (耸肩) his broad shoulders.
“The native people know. They have their own way. They watch us. They talk the drum talk to each other. Kill us if they can.”
By the afternoon of that day—my pocket diary shows me that it was Tuesday, August 18th—at least six or seven drums were beating from various points. Sometimes they beat quickly, sometimes slowly, sometimes in obvious question and answer, one far to the east breaking out in a high-pitched beat, and being followed after a pause by a deep roll from the north. There was something incredibly nerve-shaking in that constant noise, which seemed to shape itself into the words: “We will kill you if we can. We will kill you if we can.”
That night we tied our canoes with heavy stones for anchors (锚) in the centre of the stream, and made every preparation for a possible attack. Nothing came, however, and with the dawn we pushed upon our way, the drum-beating dying out behind us.
55.The two professors sat in the same canoe, didn’t they?
56.How many kinds of sound did they hear altogether during their trip?
57.How did the guides react and feel when the drums started?
58.Why did the speed of the drums change from one moment to another?
59.What did the narrator think the drums were saying?
60.Why do you think they tied their canoes in the middle of the stream, not at the side?

11.Why did Swimmer Zhang Yufei return home in tears of regret?
12.Do you think winning gold medals is a good way to measure an athlete’s success? Why or why not?
【答案】7.The American team. 8.Yes, he did. 9.Zheng Qinwen won China’s first Olympic tennis gold. 10.Cui Chenxi finished fourth in the women’s skateboarding street final. 11.Because she won one silver and five bronze medals but no gold. 12.No. Winning gold medals is not the only way to measure an athlete’s success because success can also be defined by personal improvement, breaking records, or inspiring others.

(24-25九年级上·上海浦东新·期中)Read the passage and answer the following questions. (根据短文内容回答下列问题)

In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.

【答案】55.No, they didn’t. 56.Four. 57.They froze and felt terrified. 58.Because they were in obvious question and answer. 59.We will kill you if we can. 60.Because they wanted to avoid being attacked from the side.

I have heard them before.’”可知,他们听到了猴子的尖叫声、鹦鹉尖锐的噪音、昆虫的嘈杂声和鼓声四种声音。故填Four.
