Jane, a reporter, is collecting information for the local newspaper. She is interested in the following things introduced in a magazine.
Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush?
A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner(扫描装置)are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.
Weather Sweets
Can you eat weather?
A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.
The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.
Sunrise Bed
It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it?
To help you get up, a company has created a “tool” —a sunrise bed.
It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. Tonight, Mom called for a “house meeting”. She told us that she was going back to school to start taking lessons. Well, it was totally out of my expectation. She is always there when I get home from school, and that’s the way I like it. But now, we have to make our own dinners and start doing housework.
Wednesday
The first few nights with Mom away have been a disaster. We tried making our dinner by ourselves. Manny made the iced tea, but it was undrinkable. Rodric cooked the roast beef, but it was a mess. Therefore, we bagged the homemade meal idea and went out to eat.
Tuesday
“Greg, why are the rubbish bags still at home? It’s your task!” Dad shouted and asked me why I didn’t do my job this morning. He said I needed to start being more responsible.
I’ve heard it from Dad before. Last summer, our neighbor Ms. Grove, asked me to look after the plants while she went on business. Well, I watered them several times for the first few days and I got busy with other things. Ms. Grove was pretty mad because most of the plants didn’t make it. Thursday
Dad is really serious about me taking on more responsibility. And first he wants me to wake myself up in the morning. That’s actually a real problem.
Yesterday was the first day I tried to wake myself up, and it didn’t work out. My alarm clock went off, but the sound just worked its way into my dream. And today didn’t go any better.

Finally, you finish all your schoolwork and sit back in your chair. Suddenly you feel a headache and realize your eyes are painful. What’s going on? Doctors say that many students are spending too much time in front of screens, especially during online classes. The following might be of some help to you.
THE 20-20-20 RULE
This gives your eyes a break from long screen time. It suggests looking at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of work on the screen. You can then continue working pain free.
● Studies show that people blink less often when looking at a screen. Keep your eyes wet by blinking often or using eye drops.
● Sit up straight about an arm’s length away from the screen. Make sure you’re looking down at your screen. Stand up and exercise often to avoid neck and shoulder pain.
● What about blue light blocking glasses (防蓝光眼镜)? They may look cool, but research shows that blue light isn’t the biggest cause of eye tiredness. So ask doctors about computer glasses before putting them on.

(24-25九年级上·上海黄浦·期中)Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top. Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5°C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA.Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge extinction in history. More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
31.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5°C?
A.The ocean will cover China. B.Cold waves can last a third longer.
C.Sea levels will be three times higher. D.Rainstorms will be more serious.
32.What does the underlined word “extinction” probably mean?
A.繁殖 B.灭绝 C.迁徙 D.进化
33.Which of the following environmental problems are mentioned in the text?
①Air pollution. ②Ocean pollution.
③Fewer animals. ④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
34.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the future of our planet?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.
35.How have we made the hole in the ozone layer smaller?
A.By the increase in sea levels.
B.By gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
C.By getting the fresh water.
D.By the growth of the human population
36.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

When Machines Try to Be Human
Did you know robots are trying to take over the world? They are writing books and even cooking at restaurants! But guess what? Sometimes, they mess things up-just as human do.
You Call That Service?
In Nagasaki, Japan, a hotel hired 243 robots to do various jobs, like helping guests check in or carrying suitcases. Unfortunately, the check-in robots had trouble answering guests’questions, while others kept knocking into walls and falling over. An in-room robot assistant even said “Sorry, I didn’t catch that. Could you repeat your request?” when a guest snored (打鼾). Half of the robots were soon fired (解雇), and of course they didn’t get their tips, either.
You Look Familiar!
Facial recognition software can’t always recognize faces. When The American Civil Liberties tested the Recognition software it incorrectly matched photos of criminals (罪犯) to 28 government workers. But what about football recognition? During a match cameras programmed to follow the ball kept mistaking the judge’s bald head for the football. One helpful viewer suggested that the judge wear false hair.

When a worker made a mistake while updating the historical data, Quakebot thought it was breaking news. Soon after, misled Southern Californians started worrying about an earthquake that happened almost 100 years ago!

________ Let Jesse Newton tell you. His new pet dog left its mess on the floor at night while he and his wife were asleep. What is sign language?
Sign language uses facial expressions, hand movements and body language. It is used instead of speaking or writing. There is no one universal sign language. Different countries have their own. There are around 300 sign languages in the world. The most common in the UK is British Sign Language (BSL). Like spoken languages, sign languages grow and change. Signs can stand for whole ideas. You decide to try an experiment to find out. You will use the steps of the scientific method to find an answer.

(24-25九年级上·上海黄浦·阶段练习)Choose the best answer (根据文章内容,选择最恰当的答案)
My all-time favourite films about space
Apollo 13 (1995)
When Tom Hanks announces “Houston, we have a problem”, you know you’re in for a thrilling journey. This film is adapted (改编) from the true story of the Apollo 13 Mission to the moon. One of the rocket’s oxygen tanks explodes and as a result the three-man crew have to fight against all the difficulties to bring their spaceship home. Of course we know they make it but that doesn’t make it any less exciting to watch. It gets a little sentimental at the end, but after what they’ve been through, they deserve a few tears of joy.
Avatar (2009)
When it comes to action-packed blockbusters (大片), James Cameron’s films are masterpieces, and the sci-fi thriller Avatar is no exception. Forget little green aliens, Cameron’s aliens are blue and super cool. Mankind has attacked the planet Pandora because of its natural resources, and Pandora’s (alien) inhabitants are fighting back. Cameron’s Pandora is breathtaking and the eco-message is a reminder to all of us of how important it is that we take care of our own planet.
WALL-E (2008)
Only Disney could produce a film about environmental destruction that manages to be light-hearted and fun. When the film starts, the Earth is a mess as a result of mankind’s greed and the last humans have escaped in a giant spaceship into outer space. They’ve left behind an army of robots to clean away the rubbish in the hope that one day humans can return. WALIL-E is one of these robots but his daily routine is interrupted by the arrival of EVE, a robot sent to see what progress has been made, WALL-E falls in love, but will EVE return his love and between them, can they create hope for the human race? Of course, this delightful and entertaining animated film is aimed at kids but it can be equally enjoyed by adults.
The Martian (2015)
I’ve saved the best till last. Matt Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, who is part of a space mission to explore Mars. He gets caught up in a huge storm and the rest of his crew, deciding that he must be dead, return home without him. Watney must somehow survive everything the planet can throw at him and try to find a way of making contact with his base back on Earth. Two things set this film apart from the rest: its stunning special effects and Damon’s memorable performance.
60.What does the underlined word “sentimental” probably mean?
A.Overemotional. B.Hopeless. C.Interesting. D.Relaxing.
61.Which film involves (涉及) a character left on his own in space?
A.Apollo 13. B.WALL-E. C.Avatar. D.The Martian.
62.Wall-E’s daily job is ________.
A.producing a film about environmental destruction
B.cleaning away the rubbish on the earth
C.checking the progress of rubbish cleaning
D.helping humans travel to outer space in a spaceship
63.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.In Apollo 13, the three-man crew finally succeed in returning back to earth.
B.Wall-E is an animated film for all ages.
C.Avatar involves a fight between two races.
D.Watney’s crew members make contact with him from the base on earth.
64.What lesson can we learn from Avatar?
A.We need to hold our breath on Pandora.
B.We shouldn’t attack other planets.
C.We should take good care of our own planet.
D.Natural resources are really important..
65.We can read this passage on a/an _________.
A.personal blog B.novel collection C.advertisement D.education magazine
【答案】60.A 61.D 62.B 63.D 64.C 65.A

60.词句猜测题。根据“It gets a little sentimental at the end, but after what they’ve been through, they deserve a few tears of joy.”可知,结尾有点感伤,但在他们经历了这些之后,他们值得流下几滴喜悦的眼泪。所以划线单词“sentimental”的意思是“多愁善感的”,与“overemotional”意思相近。故选A。
61.推理判断题。根据“The Martian (2015) He gets caught up in a huge storm and the rest of his crew, deciding that he must be dead, return home without him.”可知,其他人认为他死了,所以他被留在了太空。故选D。
62.细节理解题。根据“WALL-E (2008) They’ve left behind an army of robots to clean away the rubbish in the hope that one day humans can return. WALIL-E is one of these robots but his daily routine is interrupted by the arrival of EVE,”可知,Wall-E的日常任务是清洁地球上的垃圾。故选B。
63.推理判断题。根据“The Martian (2015) Watney must somehow survive everything the planet can throw at him and try to find a way of making contact with his base back on Earth.”可知,这里是指Watney要自己寻找办法与地球的基地取得联系,而不是他的队友从地球的基地去联系他。所以选项D是不正确的。故选D。
64.推理判断题。根据“Avatar (2009) Cameron’s Pandora is breathtaking and the eco-message is a reminder to all of us of how important it is that we take care of our own planet.”可知,我们从《阿凡达》这部电影学到要学会好好保护我们的星球。故选C。

(24-25九年级上·上海浦东新·期中)Held in Hangzhou, East China’s Zhejiang Province, the 4th Asian Para Games (亚洲残疾人运动会) not only bring us lots of moving stories, but also show us that technology can help people with disabilities (残疾) to take part in sports.
For example, a total of 188 people with disabilities were invited to the torch relay (传递), during which intelligent bionic (仿生) hands and legs, as well as smart guide dogs were used to help them realize their dreams.
When the last torch carrier, swimmer Xu Jialing, who won seven gold medals (奖牌) at the Jakarta Asian Para Games in 2018, lit the main torch at the opening ceremony on October 22, 2023, an intelligent bionic hand lent a helping hand.
Xu, who lost her left hand because of an accident at the age of 5, has an intelligent bionic hand. The bionic hand is well designed, allowing Xu to control and move it as easily as her right hand. It only takes a few seconds to put on and take off the smart hand, which can be used for more than 10 hours on a full charge (充电), while the price is only one-fifth that of an imported smart prosthesis (进口智能假肢).
An officer of the Hangzhou Asian Para Games Torch Relay Command Center said, “By using intelligent bionic legs and robot guide dogs in a torch relay, we wish to convey the idea that technology can change our lives and make the impossible possible. For example, the smart guide dog opens up new possibilities for blind people. It can help them to walk more freely and safely.”

③Fewer animals. ④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
34.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the future of our planet?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.

Stop the Press!
In 2017, The Los Angeles Times reported a 1925 earthquake in Santa Barbara as recent. It turned out that the report was written by Quakebot, a computer program which automatically wrote news articles based on an official geological database (地质数据库). When a worker made a mistake while updating the historical data, Quakebot thought it was breaking news. Soon after, misled Southern Californians started worrying about an earthquake that happened almost 100 years ago!

International Day of Sign Languages is on 23 September.
They can also stand for individual letters or words.
Who uses it?
Sign language is mainly used by people who are deaf or have hearing impairments. Some people are deaf all of their life. They call themselves “Deaf” with a capital “D”. It is an important part of their identity.
The history of sign language

It has even been taught to animals. In the 1970s, a gorilla named Koko learned signs for hundreds of words. Scientists say Koko asked for a kitten for Christmas using sign language.
In the UK, the earliest known use of sign language was at a wedding in 1576. And the first school opened for deaf children in Scotland in 1760. Although it was widely used, signing wasn’t encouraged until the 1970s. And most deaf children were taught spoken and written language instead.

(2024·上海静安·二模)Science and technology will continue to develop. Nature and Business in 2023 have made their predictions. Let’s have a look.
Human-like friendsRobots will be more like humans both in their looks and abilities. These robots will serve as greeters, waiters and companions of the elderly. Elon Musk’s company is working hard on making human-like robots that will work in our home. More AI systems will play roles-in areas like health care and scientific research.
Protecting the earthOne of the most difficult challenges the world faces today is reducing carbon emissions. This year we can expect more progress in green hydrogen, a new clean energy with near-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists will also have a safer way to deal with nuclear waste. The used nuclear fuel will be buried 400 meters underground.
Space and beyondThe images from the world’s largest and most powerful space telescope—the James Webb Space Telescope—have amazed the world. And the Euclid Space Telescope will be launched. It will take photos to create a 3D map of the universe. China will continue to build the Xinjiang Qitai Radio Telescope. It will be able to watch 75% of the stars in the sky at any given time.
Staying connectedPeople will communicate more smoothly. In China, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System can now be directly connected to mobile phones. We can find where the phones are even when there’s no signal. A US company is also working on a direct connection between phones and satellites. The impact of 5G will continue to grow.
