I didn’t know what to expect,” Xie Lei recalled. Xie Lei is studying for a business qualification at a university in China and has come to our university on a year-long exchange programme. “I chose the exchange programme because I wanted to learn about global business and improve my English. My ambition is to set up a business in China after graduation,” she explained. At first, Xie Lei had to adapt to life in a different country. “You have to get used to a whole new life.” she said. I had to earn how to use public transport and how to ask for things I didn’t know the English names for. When I got lost, I had to ask passers-by for help, but people here speak fast and use words I’m not familiar with. I ask them to repeat themselves a lot!” Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation, Xie Lei chose to live with a host family, who can help with her adaptation to the new culture. “When I miss home, I feel comforted to have a second family,” Xie Lei said “When there’s something I don’t know or understand I can ask them. They are also keen to learn about China. Laura, the daughter of my host family, wants to study in China in the future. We take turns to cook each evening. They really love my stir-fried tomatoes and eggs! Laura says she always feels hungry when she smells it, so I taught her how to cook it, too.  Another challenge for Xie Lei is the academic requirements. The first time that she had to write an essay, her tutor explained that she must acknowledge what other people had said if she cited their ideas, but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought! Xie Lei was confused because she thought she knew less than other people. Her tutor advised her to read lots of information in order to form a wise opinion of her own. Xie Lei also found many courses included students’ participation in class as part of the final result. Students need to generate ideas, offer examples, apply concepts, and raise questions, as well as give presentations. At first, Xie Lei had no idea what she should say, but what surprised her was that she found herself speaking up in class after just a few weeks. “My presentation on traditional Chinese art was a great success, which boosted my confidence,” she said. “I’ll use these skills back home for presentations. They’ll help me build a strong business in the future.” Now halfway through her exchange year, Xie Lei feels much more at home in the UK. What seemed strange before now appears quite normal to her. “Engaging in British culture has helped,” she said. “As well as studying hard, I’ve been involved in social activities. British people are fascinated by our culture and eager to learn more about it, so I’m keen to share my culture with them. While I’m learning about business I’m also acting as a cultural messenger building a bridge between us.” We will follow Xie Lei’s progress in later editions, but for now we wish her all the best. 1. How did Xie Lei feel when she went to London? A. Sad and bored. B. Excited but nervous. C. Hopeful and calm. D. Surprised and helpless. 2. Why did Xie choose the exchanged programmer? A. To visit more places. B. To learn about the college life in the UK. C. To make friends in the UK. D. To learn about global business and improve her English. 3. Why did Xie Lei get involved in social activities? A. Because British people wanted to learn more about Chinese culture. B. Because Xie Lei was expert at communicating with others. C. Because Xie Lei’s friends thought that she needed join them. D. Because Xie Lei was fascinated by the British people. 4. What can we learn about Xie Lei’s acting as a cultural messenger? A. Passive. B. Indifferent. C. Active. D. Annoying. B 2. D 3. A 4. 根据第一段中“I was very excited but also quite nervous. Although studying abroad can bring great benefits, I think the disadvantages for young people are greater.  To begin with, many students who study abroad face great economic pressure. That means studying abroad is just not possible for everyone. Tuition fees and living expenses are much more expensive than at home and could end up costing most families an arm and a leg. Studying in China is much more convenient and can help save money. Another important factor to consider is the tremendous pressure that comes with studying abroad. Students must learn how to live in an unfamiliar environment with limited language skills. Some may struggle and suffer from culture shock when learning how to behave in new surroundings. Other students are not mature enough to handle the challenges by themselves and may become depressed. Some students might even encounter problems with personal safety. In addition, different approaches to teaching and learning may come as a shock to many students.  A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, young people who study in China also have a great future to look forward to! As China has boomed the educational environment has improved significantly, with many great universities now available. They have great facilities and outstanding professors, helping to educate young people who will contribute to the economy and further strengthen our country. To sum up, one cannot deny the fact that studying abroad has its disadvantages, so when you think about studying abroad you should consider these many factors. Kind regard, Wang Li ( mother of twin girls) Dear Editor,  Is studying abroad a good idea or not? There are certainly disadvantages, but in my opinion, the advantages are much greater. As I always tell my son, there are no great difficulties or a person who is brave, optimistic, and willing to work hard!  The first advantage of studying abroad is personal growth. The education you gain and the experiences you have will change you for the better. For example, you will certainly become more independent because you will have to deal with all kinds of difficulties by yourself. Studying abroad also helps you to gain a global perspective and improve your general competence. Another advantage is the increased chance for cultural exchange. Chinese students can be seen as cultural envoy promoting friendship between nations. International students in China also bring their colourful cultures here. Cooperating with people from diverse cultural backgrounds helps us view the world from different angles and thus gives us more insight into our own culture.  Finally, studying abroad provides a great opportunity to contribute to the development of our motherland. China’s global outlook, with projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative, has helped us make connections across the world. Therefore, China needs more talented young people with a global perspective who are highly competent with languages, have leadership and organisational skills, and have strong cultural awareness. Students who study abroad will develop such skills and abilities, and these in turn will provide them with better career opportunities.  All in all, studying abroad helps to build character and increase people’s understanding of cultural diversity while strengthening China and building a shared future for all. I think this life-changing experience is certainly worthwhile and I hope my child will study abroad in the future. Sincerely yours, Zhang Yi (father of one boy) 5. What is Wang Li’s attitude to studying abroad in the first letter? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective. 6. In Wang Li’s opinion, what’s the advantage of studying abroad? A. Bearing great economic pressure. B. Facing unfamiliar environment. C. Having great potential benefits. D. Experiencing the culture shock. 7. Zhang Yi thinks that students studying abroad can __________. A. become more dependent B. get less chance for cultural exchange C. lose a global perspective D. develop organizational skills 8. What can we learn from the two letters? A. Students studying abroad don’t need to learn how to live in a new environment. B. Studying abroad helps to increase people’s understanding of cultural diversity. C. Students studying abroad can’t encounter problems with personal safety. D. Studying abroad helps students to speak excellent English in a few years. C 6. C 7. D 8. 根据第一段中“Although studying abroad can bring great benefits, I think the disadvantages for young people are greater.(尽管出国留学可以带来巨大的好处,但我认为对于年轻人来说,弊大于利)”可知,Wang Li对出国留学的态度是不赞成的。 根据第四段中“A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, young people who study in China also have a great future to look forward to!(最后一点要考虑的是,虽然出国留学确实有潜在的好处,但在中国学习的年轻人也有一个美好的未来值得期待!)” 根据倒数第二段中“Therefore, China needs more talented young people with a global perspective who are highly competent with languages, have leadership and organisational skills, and have strong cultural awareness.(因此,中国需要更多具有全球视野、语言能力出众、具备领导力和组织能力以及强烈文化意识的年轻人才)”可知,Zhang Yi认为出国留学的学生可以培养和发展全球视野、语言能力、领导力和组织能力以及强烈文化意识,这其中包括组织能力故出国留学可以培养学生的组织能力。 根据第三段中“Students must learn how to live in an unfamiliar environment with limited language skills. (学生必须学会如何在语言能力有限的陌生环境中生活)”以及“Some students might even encounter problems with personal safety. (一些学生甚至可能遇到人身安全问题。)”可知,学生必须学会如何在语言能力有限的陌生环境中生活;一些学生甚至可能遇到人身安全问题,故排除A选项“Students studying abroad don’t need to learn how to live in a new environment.(出国留学的学生不需要学习如何在一个新环境中生活)”以及C选项“Students studying abroad can’t encounter problems with personal safety.( 出国留学的学生不会遇到人身安全问题)”;同时D选项“Studying abroad helps students to speak excellent English in a few years.(出国留学可以帮助学生在几年内说一口流利的英语)”在文中并未提及,故排除D选项。根据第一封信中第四段部分中“A final point to consider is that while studying abroad does have potential benefits, (最后一点要考虑的是,虽然出国留学确实有潜在的好处)”以及第二封信中最后一段“All in all, studying abroad helps to build character and increase people’s understanding of cultural diversity while strengthening China and building a shared future for all. I think this life-changing experience is certainly worthwhile and I hope my child will study abroad in the future.( 总而言之,出国留学有助于塑造品格,增加人们对文化多样性的理解,同时增强中国的实力,构建人类命运共同体。我认为这段改变人生的经历是值得的,我希望我的孩子将来能出国留学)”可知,第一封信虽然主要强调了出国留学的坏处,但指出了出国留学确实有潜在的好处,其中并没有否认其文化交流的好处,由此两封信都提到了出国留学可以促进文化交流,增加对文化多样性的理解。故选B。 C Can a small group of drones (无人机) guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure (基础设施) worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis. Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient (高效) across the board. That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews’ efforts. By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time. 9. What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible? A. The use of drones in checking on power lines. B. Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes. C. The reduction of cost in designing drones. D. Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas. 10. What does “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones. C. Inspection and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure. 11. What function is expected of the rail drones? A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically. C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To accelerate transportation. 12. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded C. What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face D. How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways 【答案】9. A 10. C 11. A 12. 根据文章第二段“Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points.(无人机已经被用于检查高压电线。他们完全可以做同样的事情来检查铁路线路和铁路基础设施的其他重要方面,如铁路轨道和换乘点的正确位置)”可推知,无人机在高压电线检测中的应用,为其应用到铁路线路提供了可行性。故选A。 根据后文“It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. (据统计,仅欧洲铁路公司每年在铁路维护上的花费就约为200亿欧元,其中包括经常在夜间派遣维修人员检查和维修铁路基础设施)”可知,花在maintenance上的费用是用于“inspect and repair the rail infrastructure (检查和维修铁路基础设施”。由此可知“That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety”是指大幅节省检修成本和更好地保护铁路人员安全,划线词和 C项:Inspection and repair(检修)含义相近。 根据最后一段 “Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.(带有先进传感器和人工智能的非常小的无人机可以像副驾驶一样在火车前面行驶。凭借它们的预见能力,它们可以发出任何问题的信号,以便快速行驶的火车能够及时做出反应)”可推知,对于无人机期待的功能是提前发现问题。故选A。 根据第一段“Can a small group of drones(无人机)guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometers of rail tracks and infrastructure(基础设施)worldwide are safe for trains on a24/7 basis.(一小群无人机能否在保证铁路安全可靠的同时,帮助铁路运营商每年节省数十亿欧元? D The Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown. First announced in April, 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity (肥胖). It is believed that today’s children and teenagers are consuming three times the recommended level of sugar, putting them at a higher risk of the disease. Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £520m a year for the Treasury. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports. It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers (制造商) so they can avoid paying the tax. Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers’ efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures. Since April drinks companies have been forced to pay between 18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or import, depending on the sugar content. However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year. Today’s figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities (设施) and healthier eating in schools. Helping the next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great importance, and the industry is playing its part. 13. Why was the sugar tax introduced? A. To collect money for schools. B. To improve the quality of drinks. C. To protect children’s health. D. To encourage research in education. 14. How did some drinks companies respond to the sugar tax? A. They turned to overseas markets. B. They raised the prices of their products. C. They cut down on their production. D. They reduced their products’ sugar content. 15. From which of the following is the sugar tax collected? A. Most alcoholic drinks. B. Milk-based drinks. C. Fruit juices. D. Classic Coke. 16. What can be inferred about the adoption of the sugar tax policy? A. It is a short-sighted decision. B. It is a success story. C. It benefits manufacturers. D. It upsets customers. C 14. D 15. D 16. 根据第二段中的“First announced in April, 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity.(该税于2016年4月首次宣布,适用于每100毫升含糖超过5g的软饮料,旨在帮助减少儿童肥胖)”可知,征收糖税的目的是帮助儿童减少肥胖,保护儿童健康。 根据第四段中的“It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers so they can avoid paying the tax.(此前,制造商已经降低了商店中销售的超过一半的软饮料的含糖量,以避免纳税)”可知,一些饮料公司通过降低了产品的含糖量来避税。 根据第五段中的“However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year.(然而,一些高糖品牌,如经典可口可乐,已经接受了糖税,并拒绝改变,因为担心会惹恼消费者。果汁、以牛奶为原料的饮料和大多数酒精饮料是免税的,每年生产不到100万升的小公司也是免税的)”可知,糖税主要来自经典可口可乐这些高糖品牌。故选D项。 【16题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Today’s figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities and healthier eating in schools.(根据一位政府官员的说法,今天的数据显示了糖税的积极影响,它为学校的体育设施和健康饮食筹集了数百万英镑)”可知,糖税政策带来了积极影响。 Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Here are five ways to sustain (保持) long-distance friendships. ·Set a regular date Long-lasting friendships share the characteristic that both sides equally contact (联系) and share with one another. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge. ___17___. ·More isn’t always merrier Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both. ___18___. There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat. ·Practise empathy (共情) ___19___. The friend who is remaining needs to be sensitive to all the additional time demands placed on the friend who has moved. The one in the new environment should be sympathetic to the fact that your friend may feel abandoned. · ___20___ Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you. ·Don’t rely on technology alone ___21___, but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain. Try to seek out chances to renew friendships. How to do it? Just spend face-to-face time together whenever possible. A. Remember important dates B. Compensate by writing letters C. It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper D. Try to find a time that works for both of you and stick to it E. Friends need to talk about their preferred methods of communication F. It is easy to have a sense of connectedness through social media G. You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind 【答案】17. D 18. E 19. G 20. A 21. 【18题详解】 根据上文“Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.”(确保你已经和你的朋友沟通过,了解你们想要联系的频率,以及哪种方法对你们双方都最有效)提到异地朋友之间要商量沟通方式,E项“朋友需要谈论他们喜欢的交流方式”承接上文,进一步提出对交流的方法的沟通,下文“There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.”(除了持续的文字交流,还有其他选择,比如留下语音信息或进行群聊)对E项中的“methods of communication”进行了举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选E项。 【19题详解】 根据下文“The friend who is remaining”(留下来的朋友)和“The one in the new environment”(在新环境中的那个)提到朋友的两个不同处境,G项“你可能是朋友中离开的那一方,也可能是被留下的那一方”指出了异地友谊中分为离开的一方和留下的一方,其中“the friend who left”和“the one who was left behind”分别对应下文“The one in the new environment”和“The friend who is remaining”,所以G项符合题意。 故选A项。 I’ve been motivated — and demotivated — by other folks’ achievements all my life. When I was a teenager, a neighborhood friend ____22____ a marathon race. Feeling motivated, I started running ____23____, but then two things happened. Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian. A few years later, I moved to America with my parents. As I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer the same. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. Meanwhile, the food choices were almost as diverse as the students. In front of me was such a diverse collection of foods that I couldn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I would pick out something awful, I desperately tried to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation. Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language. Of course, I managed to enjoy nice food and learn the importance of accepting diversity. In New York, a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a diverse population. So the lessons I learned stuck in my mind forever. For the past three summers, I chose to volunteer in a government agency in New York, where new immigrants much like me in the lunch line flooded in our office seeking help. My work was to help them and I often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones. I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people who did not speak the language. As I served the role of vital communication link, I was reminded of my desperate struggle to communicate before I learned English. It suddenly became very clear to me how lucky I was to be fluent in two languages and to be able to see diversity. My work also helped to expand my mind in many ways and offered me a chance to understand the joint efforts of society to preserve diversity. For example, I’ve learned there are a number of social programs. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 For example, I’ve learned there are a number of social programs. They are designed to help new immigrants adapt to their new lives in America. These programs offer language classes, job training, and cultural orientation sessions to ease the transition. Seeing these initiatives in action has deepened my appreciation for the value of community support and the importance of preserving one’s cultural identity while integrating into a new society. I am grateful that I have the chance to experience diverse culture and at the same time to help others in my own way. Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused. Instead, I feel a profound sense of belonging and pride in this mosaic of cultures. C. Active. D. Annoying. B Dear Editor In the past few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people studying abroad. C Can a small group of drones (无人机) guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways D The Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown. Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
