Have students look at the pictures in “Welcome to the unit” and answer the following questions. (1) What places does Sunshine Middle School have? (2) What can students do there? Step 2 Pre-reading 1. Have students think and answer the following questions before reading. (1) What places should a school have? (2) Why are green spaces important for a school? Step 3 While-reading 1. Have students look at the 3 pictures and answer the following question. What places does Jack Liu introduce? 2. Have students read the video script and find the places in the picture in Part A. 3. Have students read the video script carefully and complete the notes in Part B. 4. Have students find some expressions that Jack uses when he takes the viewers from one place to another. 5. Have students find some words Jack Liu uses to express his love for his school. Step 4 Post-reading 1. Have students think deeply about what they like about Sunshine Middle School. 2. Have students learn about the structure of a welcome speech by thinking about the following questions. (1) What does Jack begin his welcome speech with? (2) What else can we begin our welcome speech with? (3) What special sentences does Jack use to end his speech? (4) Why does Jack Liu use two imperative sentences in the last paragraph? 3. Have students use a mind map to summarize the whole structure of the video script and some important sentence structures to introduce a school. 4. Have students complete a new email and finish Part C. 5. Have students discuss the following question. How is your new school different from Sunshine Middle School? 6. Have students talk with their partners about the following questions. What place at your school do you like best? Why? 7. Have students use the information about their new school to finish the new mind map and introduce their new school to their partners. Step 5 Summary Have students summarize what they have learnt in this lesson. Step 6 Homework Compulsory homework: 1. Finish the exercises on the worksheet. 2. Preview “Grammar” on P35.
