I received a private message on my social media account. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. We want to invite you to join our next challenge group — we’ll be focusing on daily exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Social media was running my life, not me. But what killed social media for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had gotten. His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set a bad example for him.
Before social media became popular, surfing the Internet was an occasional/ distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity (质朴) of those days and set a better example for my son, I deactivated my social media account.
I’d been in the habit of checking my social media account many times a day, so I had to come up with some new ideas. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting (针织). I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and my son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I was completely in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to social media. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family members far and wide. I check out it on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.
It is not an addiction any more.

If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. I don’t believe there is one universal definition of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situation: same amount of money, life experiences, etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn’t feel equally happy or equally sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness, which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting.
The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude (逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them!
On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable.
46. Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1?
A. Happiness has one universal definition.
B. Every individual has his own happiness.
C. There are no people who are really happy.
D. Happiness means having money and power.
47. What does the underlined part “these things” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences.
C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life.
48. Even if their goals are met, some people still don’t feel happy because _________.
A. they gave too much for their goals
B. they don’t know what happiness is
C. they have new goals that need achieving
D. they think sadness is a never-ending process
49. What kind of person is likely to be happy in the author’s opinion?
A. He who has few expectations. B. He who has no pressure or goals.
C. He who has a great ambition or dream. D. He who can find fun from his daily life.
50. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers _________.
A. the definition of happiness
B. the importance of happiness
C. to enjoy every day to the fullest
D. to give up their dreams and be practical
D
Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting locations to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration, or flight, paths, of almost 1,500 species and decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas. The major danger for migratory birds is development in human society. Building and paving has covered over nature where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. For example, a bird called the bar-tailed godwit migrates from its breeding grounds in the Arctic flying all the way to the southern earth in Australia and New Zealand stopping at Yellow Sea mudflats in China along the way.
One of the scientists who worked on the study says “many of these critical sites have been taken up owing to urban, industrial and agricultural expansion.” The problem, according to researchers, is that many of these small birds die along their migration because they don’t have a safe place to eat and rest to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time conserving land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. In addition, many of the sanctuaries(避难所) are not wide enough to cover the paths of migratory birds.
One species that doesn’t exist any longer is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says. The researchers say if one country might have preserved safe zones for migratory birds while a neighboring country might not, a bird might die.
One scientist who is not involved in the report says that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds. He says small changes--- like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of areas birds would be likely to use--- could make a big difference.
51. Why is development in human society considered as the major danger for migratory birds?
A. Construction activities occupy birds’ paths.
B. Serious industrial pollution damages birds’ habitats.
C. Hunting activities happen more frequently.
D. Airplane flights directly harm birds’ safety.
52. What’s the current situation of protecting migratory birds?
A. Countries in East Asia don’t want to make any changes.
B. The progress still remains at the primary stage.
C. Some of the efforts of humans aren’t working well.
D. Not many countries are involved in the activities.
53. According to the researchers, __________.
A. governments need to work together and provide safe areas
B. safe zones in neighboring countries need to be combined together
C. more bird species will die out if they continue migrating through countries
D. human activities should give way to the birds when the migrating season comes
54. What can we know about the migratory birds according to the passage?
A. They always travel from the north to the south.
B. They need to stop during the migration to correct directions.
C. All of them are endangered because of lacking protection.
D. Some of them take rests or feed in cities.
55. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The migration of birds influences society development.
B. Migratory birds are dying from losing their homes.
C. Countries need to work together to protect migratory birds.
D. Protecting migratory birds is very necessary.

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When I was 10, my friend Sydney suffered from a brain cancer. Sydney fought against it, but the cancer did not respond to the treatment, and could not be removed. Sydney died at the age of 11.
After her death, I felt sad and discouraged. I decided to turn these negative emotions into positive actions. When I was 15 years old, I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild (PPD) with two friends. My goal is to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children.
Over the years, PPD had held fundraisers (募捐活动) across the city. The first Pink Polka Dots Guild event, a garage sale, just raised $900, but our latest fundraiser, the 2012 golf tournament, brought in over $73,000. In the past five years, we have raised almost a million dollars to help do a research on removing brain cancer.
I’ve been shocked by the public recognition that PPD has earned. It received an award from President. This great honour raised awareness and money for our cause.
The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries, such as “Tumor Paint”, which illuminates (照射) cancerous cells so that doctors can remove them with amazing accuracy. The discovery appeared in Time Magazine. I was very proud to have helped fund the research of this life-saving technology.
Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with devotion, it is possible to make a difference in the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots set off in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a competitive speaker and a devoted volunteer.

B

A. the definition of happiness

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍城市化建设和工农业发展,使得候鸟栖息地遭到严重破坏,这将直接导致大量鸟类物种的消失。
【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的The scientists studied the migration,or flight, paths,of almost 1,500 species and decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas. The major danger for migratory birds is development in human society(科学家们研究了近1500个物种的迁徙或飞行路线,发现其中91%都经过了危险地带。候鸟面临的主要危险是人类社会的发展)可知人类社会的发展被认为是候鸟的主要危险是因为建筑活动占据了鸟类活动的路径。A. Construction activities occupy birds’ paths.(人类活动占据了鸟类的路径)符合以上说法,故选A项。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的One scientist who is not involved in the report says that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds(一位没有参与这份报告的科学家说,虽然一些栖息地正在改变,但是可以做更多的工作来保证城市地区鸟类的安全)故推测人类保护鸟类的一些努力并没有起到作用。C. Some of the efforts of humans aren’t working well.(人类的一些努力并不凑效)符合以上说法,故选C项。

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
