B Gyeongyun Lily Min spent the last seven months in a makeshift laboratory she set up as she tried to change stadium noise into electrical energy The 17-year-old rising senior at Alfred M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, saw Disney’s Monsters, Inc., a celebrated animated movie, where energy is generated from children’s screams. From it she gained an idea. “I began to wonder if, in reality, we could use the abundant noise in environments like stadiums to generate electricity to meet the global demand for sustainable energy,” explained Min. “This imaginative concept made me curious about the potential of changing sound into usable energy.” With her great passion for science and innovation, the young student set out to study the concept on her own. Min believed this could be achieved because of the piezoelectric effect When pressure is applied to piezoelectric materials, the materials generate electric energy. For example, the piezoelectric effect is at work in light-up shoes, which light up when a person’s foot puts pressure on them. Sound waves also generate pressure — the louder the sound, the greater the pressure. This is why Min believes that loud noise could help produce a generous amount of electricity. To prove her theory, she built a model of a National Basketball Association (NBA) stadium and placed piezoelectric materials inside the model. Then, she played recordings of stadium crowd noise, generating between 70 and 100 decibels (分贝) of sound. Sure enough, a small amount of electricity was produced. “Though there are current limitations in the sensitivity and efficiency of piezoelectric materials, further research and development could greatly improve its practicability,” Min says, “By advancing the quality of piezoelectric devices, we can unlock a new path for sustainable energy production, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.” Min says her findings suggest that this concept could work, not only in stadiums but also on highways, in factories, in train stations, and in any other noisy environment. 4. What inspired Min to use noise to produce electricity? A. The noisy stadiums. B. Her passion for science. C. The lack of energy. D. A famous film. 5. Why did Min build the model of a NBA stadium? A. To produce piezoelectric materials. B. To do experiments for her theory. C. To store the sound waves’ pressure. D. To show the origin of her concept. 6. What does Min think of her technology? A. It requires further improvement. B. It’s practically applied now. C. It’s greener than any others. D. It needs support from environmentalists. 7. What lesson can we learn from Min’s story? A. Thinking and action result in success. B. A youth is to be regarded with respect. C. Success means working independently. D. Being famous is a thirst of the young. C In a new survey, American parents with school-aged kids are shining a light on the complexities of packing school lunches and the creative efforts they pay to ensure their children eat nutritiously. One of the most striking findings is that nearly a third of parents admit to eating their children’s uneaten lunch leftovers for dinner. Parents estimate that, on average, 21% of their child’s lunch returns home uneaten each day. Parental guilt plays a significant role in lunch-packing decisions, with many of respondents suffering when choosing easy, less healthy options due to being busy or their child’s pickiness. However, this guilt has led to some extreme but well-intended measures, with 79% of parents reporting they’ve gone to dramatic lengths to keep unhealthy foods away from their children, including avoiding buying certain foods at the store, hiding them, and even telling white lies. The survey reveals that one-third of parents purchase snacks and foods with fun packaging to excite their children, while 24% rely on cute containers and lunchboxes. Remarkably, 54% of parents reported that their children are more likely to eat food if its packaging features the role models they admire. Meanwhile, parents are actively working to educate their children about wellness, such as teaching them about healthy foods and diet (42%), and modeling healthy eating (34%). The study paints a picture of parents dealing with multiple priorities, with many describing themselves as “stressed” and “struggling”. They find it difficult to incorporate (融入) healthy foods into busy lifestyles. “Incorporating whole foods and produce into your family’s diet and busy lifestyles isn’t as time-consuming as it once was. There are so many grab-and-go healthy snacking options on the market that incorporate whole foods such as produce that are delicious, convenient, and more importantly, kid approved,” says Dr. Martin Ruebelt, chief scientific officer at NatureSweet. 8. What is the benefit of parental guilt in deciding lunch-packing? A. Reducing kids’ food waste. B. Protecting kids’ physical health. C. Preventing kids telling lies. D. Saving much time for kids. 9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The variety of food packaging. B. Parents’ strategies for kids. C. Children’s pickiness. D. The importance of wellness. 10. What’s Ruebelt’s attitude to whether parents can get healthy foods on the go? A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Unclear. 11 What is the best title for the text? A. Nutritious Foods: Parents’ Guilt B. The Outcome of Kids’ School Lunches C. Dealing with Kids’ Lunch Leftover D. Kids’ Healthy Foods: Parents’ Pursuit D About 900 miles off the coast of Chile, scientists have discovered an underwater mountain home to primitive ecosystems that they believe host at least 20 previously unknown species. The team mapped a 1.9-mile tall seamount, which is part of the Nazca Ridge (NR), an underwater mountain range in the southeast Pacific Ocean. The potentially new species that have yet to be officially confirmed include a sea urchin, starfish and a squat lobster. The findings will be submitted to the Ocean Census, which promotes the discovery of new sea species for the confirmation. The team also documented rare sightings of the delightfully named Casper octopus and recorded a live squid, a creature that had only previously been studied from a few dead samples. The discoveries are the result of a 28-day expedition (考察) to the understudied NR, led by Schmidt Ocean Institute. Before this mission, the height and the exact location of the mountain range weren’t known, researchers said. New technology allowed researchers to study the complex depths with greater accuracy than previously possible. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle named SuBastian to gather images to map the sea floor. Only 26% of the seafloor has been mapped with such high resolution, said Schmidt Ocean Institute’s director Jyotika Virmani. Through the map, each expedition “let us have a better understanding of the uncharted seabed and made us focus more on the lives on our home planet,” she said. The Institute’s two prior expeditions to the NR and the neighboring Salasy Gómez Ridge (SyGR), in January and February, 2024, led to the discovery of 150 new species. Both mountain ranges are in the high seas and lie outside of any country. They’re being threatened since there’re the effects of climate change, plastic pollution, overfishing and potential deep-sea mining. We hope the region containing the NR and the SyGR is a candidate to become a sea protected area that could protect sea life from activities such as commercial fishing or oil drilling. We hope the data gathered from these expeditions will help inform future policies, safeguarding these undeveloped environments for future generations. 12. What will the team do for the potentially new species? A. Return them to the NR. B. Find a sea floor for them. C. Help do species identification. D. Document them for dead samples. 13. What can be inferred about the NR? A. It had been well-studied before the expedition. B. Researchers had known its rare species before. C. Researchers touched its every corner in person. D. New technology helped explore it fruitfully. 14. What does the underlined word “uncharted” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Shallow. B. Uncovered. C. Unknown. D. Polluted. 15. What does the author say about the NR and the SyCR in the last paragraph? A. Their ecosystems are a great concern. B. They are free from deep-sea mining activities. C. They both became sea protected areas. D. Their locations promote commercial fishing. Personal growth is a fundamental part of our lives and a lifelong commitment. As they made their way through the crowd, the siblings (兄妹) found themselves surrounded by a sea of people, all eager to get a look at their favorite band. Then, in the middle of the celebration, an object lay unnoticed on the ground — a wallet full of cash and other valuables. Catherine spotted the wallet first. With a mixture of surprise and unease, her heart skipped a beat as she picked it up, feeling the weight of the contents within. Johnson noticed his sister holding the wallet when turning to see her. “Look, Johnson,” Catherine whispered, her eyes wide with disbelief. “There’s so much money in it! We could buy so much with this money. Last week, I saw a comic book named Hilda and the Mountain King by Luke Pearson in the bookstore. I wanted to buy it very much, but I didn’t have the money.” Hearing what his younger sister said, Johnson felt it was reasonable for them to keep the wallet. After all, they didn’t steal the wallet but they just found it. What’s more, finances were a constant concern for his family. However, Johnson’s initial excitement quickly gave way to a sense of responsibility. He knew the wallet belonged to someone who must surely be extremely worried. The thought of keeping the money was inviting, but his sense of right and wrong wouldn’t allow it. He looked at his sister. “We can’t keep this, Catherine,” Johnson said firmly. “We have to find the owner.” Catherine nodded, though unwillingly. They searched for any identifying information within the wallet. To their relief, they found a driver’s license and a business card with the telephone number on it. The owner’s name happened to be Luke Pearson, just the same as that of the author of the comic book Catherine wanted to buy last week. They didn’t know whether they were the same person. Ignoring the concert, the siblings began to locate Luke Pearson. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Curiously, Johnson asked Pearson if he published a comic book recently. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 海口市琼山华侨中学25届高三年级第一学期12月月 考英语试卷 1. How much is the shirt? The 17-year-old rising senior at Alfred M. 4. D 5. B 6. A 7. A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Unclear. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Nutritious Foods: Parents’ Guilt B. The Outcome of Kids’ School Lunches C. Dealing with Kids’ Lunch Leftover D. Kids’ Healthy Foods: Parents’ Pursuit 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. 12. C 13. D 14. C 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Ignoring the concert, the siblings began to locate Luke Pearson. They called the number on the business card and explained the situation to the person who answered. To their surprise, the person was very grateful and promised to pass on the message to Luke Pearson. The next day, they received a call from Luke Pearson himself, who was thrilled to have his wallet back. He insisted on meeting the siblings to thank them in person. Curiously, Johnson asked Pearson if he published a comic book recently. Pearson smiled and said, “Yes, I did. I’m the author of Hilda and the Mountain King. I’m so grateful to you for returning my wallet. As a token of my appreciation, I’d like to give you a signed copy of my book.” Catherine’s eyes lit up with excitement. She couldn’t believe her luck. Not only had they done the right thing by returning the wallet, but she also got the comic book she had been dreaming of. The siblings left Pearson’s house with a sense of pride and satisfaction, knowing that they had made a difference in someone’s life. 词汇激活 行为类 ①解释:explain/clarify ②承诺做某事:promise to do/commit to doing/undertake to do ③与……见面:meet/meet up with ④给:give/hand/offer 情绪类 ①感激的:grateful/thankful ②兴奋的:thrilled/exhilarated/excited 【点睛】[高分句型1] They called the number on the business card and explained the situation to the person who answered.
