I have always been proud of my handwriting, a skill I was taught in grade school. The teacher was
teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing
lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses
wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot. We were strictly prohibited from using block letters
on our homework, as they lack the beauty.
Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive(草书). They type everything,
mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great
sadness among traditionalists.
But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not
one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful
for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn’t read a thing I had
written. One friend went so far as to ask if I could use block letters next time so that she could
understand what I was writing.
Initially, I was angry. I had made the effort to cover an entire postcard with what I viewed as not
just handwriting but calligraphy. But then I showed an English friend a postcard I’d just written, and he
said that the only thing that was readily understandable was the letters “U. S. A.” The rest of it, he
politely suggested, looked like “chicken scrawl.”
Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s
run together, and the l’s look like i’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I’m
taking their advice and using block letters to communicate.
In fact, I just now sent an old friend a postcard. But this time, I simply wrote—in big block letters:
DEARALICE:
HI.
JOE.
I hope she gets the message.
24. What do we know about the Palmer Penmanship Method?
A. It is characterized by big flowing lines. B. It is rarely appreciated by traditionalists.
C. It was not allowed in students’ homework. D. It is viewed as a trend in handwriting styles.
25. What weakened the writer’s belief in cursive?
A. The popularity of block letters in recent times.
B. The younger generation’s disinterest in cursive.
C. His friends’ failure to comprehend his postcards.
D. His English friend’s suggestion on postcard design.
26. Why did the writer switch to block letters for communication?
A. To deliver his message clearly. B. To improve his handwriting skills.
C. To win praise from his friends. D. To show his passion for calligraphy.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. The wide use of cursive. B. The sad decline of cursive.
C. The value of preserving cursive. D. The technique of writing in cursive.

You’ve most likely heard the news by now: A car-commuting, desk-bound, TV-watching lifestyle
can be harmful to our health. All the time that we spend rooted in the chair is linked to increased risks
of so many deadly diseases that experts have named this modern-day health epidemic the “sitting
disease”.
Sitting for too long slows down the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢) and the way enzymes break
down our fat reserves, raising both blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Small amounts of regular
activity, even just standing and moving around, throughout the day is enough to bring the increased
levels back down. And those small amounts of activity add up — 30 minutes of light activity in two or
three-minute bursts can be just as effective as a half-hour block of exercise. But without that activity,
blood sugar levels and blood pressure keep creeping up, steadily damaging the inside of the arteries (动
脉 ) and increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other serious diseases. In essence,
fundamental changes in biology occur if you sit for too long.
But wait, you’re a runner. You needn’t worry about the harm of a sedentary lifestyle because you
exercise regularly, right? Well, not so fast. Recent studies show that people spend an average of 64
hours a week sitting, whether or not they exercise 150 minutes a week as recommended by World
Health Organization (WHO). Regular exercisers, furthermore, are found to be about 30 percent less
active on days when they exercise. Overall, most people simply aren’t exercising or moving around
enough to balance out all the harm that can result from sitting nine hours or more a day.
Scared straight out of your chair? Good. The remedy is as simple as standing up and taking activity
breaks.
28. Which is the best way to bring down high blood sugar level and blood pressure?
A. Doing exercise for 150 minutes or more every week.
B. Getting rid of the habit of car commuting and TV watching.
C. Standing or moving around for at least two minutes every day.
D. Interrupting sitting time with light activity as often as possible.
29. What does the word “sedentary” in the third paragraph most likely mean?
A. Inactive. B. Risky. C. Overloaded. D. Unbalanced.
30. Which of the following may be inferred about those who do serious exercise?
A. They always meet the exercise standard recommended by WHO.
B. They tend to stand or move less on the days when they work out.
C. They usually remove all the harmful effects of sitting for too long.
D. They generally spend less time sitting than those who do not exercise.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The challenges of the modern lifestyle.
B. The effect of regular activity on our body.
C. The reasons for the spread of a modern epidemic.
D. The threat to our health from long hours of sitting.

Children exposed to videos by caregivers for their calming or “babysitting” benefits tended to use
phrases and sentences with fewer words. A new study from Southern Methodist University
psychologist Sarah Kucker and colleagues reveals that passive video use among children can negatively
affect language development, but their caregiver’s motivations for exposing them to digital media could
also lessen the impact.
Published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, the study involved 302 caregivers of children between
17 and 30 months. Caregivers answered questions about their child’s words, sentences, and how much
time they spend on different media activities each day. Those activities included video/TV, video games,
video chat, and e-books, with caregivers explaining why they use each activity with their child. Print
book reading was also compared.
Researchers looked at the amount of media use and the reasons provided by caregivers for their
children’s media use. These factors were then compared to the children’s vocabulary and length using
two or more words together.
The research reveals a negative association between high levels of digital media watching and
children’s vocabulary development. However, the negative impact on language skills was lessened
when videos were used for educational purposes or to foster social connections — such as through
video chats with family members.
Kucker acknowledges that parents often use digital media to occupy children while they complete
tasks. She suggests that caregivers need to consider what kind of videos and how much their children
are watching, and whether they can interact with them during this period.
Future research by Kucker and her colleagues will continue to explore the types of videos young
children watch, how they use screens with others, and how that impacts language development.
32. What is the potential impact of being exposed to videos by caregivers on children?
A. It enhances their vocabulary development.
B. It has no significant effect on their language skills.
C. It leads to the use of shorter phrases and sentences.
D. It encourages them to read print books more often.
33. What do paragraph 2 and 3 tell us about the study?
A. Its research process. B. Its theoretical basis.
C. Its underlying logic. D. Its scientific evidence.
34. Under what circumstance can the negative impact be lessened?
A. When children focus on tasks.
B. When children get involved in the content.
C. When videos serve as entertainment.
D. When videos aid learning and bond building.
35. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To point out the significance of the study.
B. To bring out the focus of follow-up studies.
C. To present the practical application of the findings.
D. To discuss other affecting factors of babies’ growth.

How to Stop Being a People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this
habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I’ve become a happier person as a result. Here are
some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to stop
being a people pleaser. Who are the people that you feel the need to please? 36 Answering these
questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear
disappointing others. 37 If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy trying
to control how people feel about you. The best thing you can do is let them feel their feelings. It will
feel liberating to free yourself from being responsible for someone else’s reaction.
38 Saying “no”is a good way to set better boundaries in your important relationships. All
healthy relationships have their own boundaries. If you haven’t set boundaries in your relationships,
the odds are that at some point you will end up feeling pressured to do something you don’t want to
do.
Accept yourself. Many people pleasers are insecure about who they are. 39 Check out our
summary of Brené Brown's the Gifts of Imperfection to learn how to accept your imperfections and
love yourself.
Remember that you cannot please everyone. No matter what you do there will always be
someone who is unhappy with your choices. 40
A.Set healthy boundaries.
B.Keep healthy relationships.
C.Why do you feel the need to keep them happy?
D.Spend some time learning to love yourself for who you are.
E. And why bother trying to please everyone if it isn’t possible?
F. But saying “no”is the best way to take care of your own needs.
G.That is why the more you seek security, the less of it you have.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To
persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her
parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant
responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He
listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing
the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but

Sarah’s pleading(恳求的) words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the
movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to
silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing
increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t
find my phone!” she screamed, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag,
yet her phone seemed to have disappeared. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents?” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent,
her mind racing with the consequences. She could imagine her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh
words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a
phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and dragged home, her heart heavy with what had
happened.

句子谓语动词为listed,空处为非谓语动词,the 700-year-old Beijing Central Axis与refer to之间为被动关系,应用过去分词。故填referred。
故填to。
故填the。
have the opportunity to do sth.为固定短语,表示“有机会做某事”,其中to do sth为不定式作后置定语修饰the opportunity,结合所给词,故填to gain。
故填who。
根据时间状语Since last year可知,此处应用现在完成时,因主语为the course,为第三人称单数,故空处应为has attracted。故填has attracted。

Possible version1 :
Para 1: The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I...I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father's brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie? Or could it have...?” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance.“Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We'll figure this out together.”
Para 2: Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn't just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!"Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava's hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.
