On the last days of July, I moved to a flat in Brixton and joined those with a garden for the first time.
Before moving, I lived in a flat surrounded by a small plot of woodland nearby. There were a good six weeks during which the dawn chorus was so loud that waking up at 5 am was a daily routine. Watching the birds became a soap opera I was deeply invested in. In Brixton, though, all I could hear was traffic.
Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space.
It was for this reason that I turned to gardening. I’m not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony, four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. The only garden I had previously had access to as an adult, in Hackney at the start of my career, was used for parties, barbecues and playing with the neighbor’s cat.
Filled with blind enthusiasm and curiosity, I picked up plants from supermarkets and flower markets, often killing them out of love and then starting all over again. I often spent whole weekends in that small space. The balcony had a good view: one of London’s shining skylines beneath high skies that changed color and cloud by the minute. But it was so small that you had to look closely, and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver (动摇), it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.
4. What is one challenge the author faced after moving to Brixton?
A. Dealing with a noisy neighbor. B. Finding a suitable place for parties.
C. Adjusting to the lack of green space. D. Getting used to the city’s heavy traffic.
5. What was the author’s initial experience with gardening?
A. She learned gardening all by herself.
B. She had a natural talent for gardening.
C. She had a large garden in her childhood home.
D. She started gardening in a small woodland area.
6. What did the author learn from her gardening experience in Camberwell?
A. The key to being a successful gardener.
B. The way to master gardening on her own.
C. The importance of looking closely at nature.
D. The method of getting along well with neighbors.
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How I Overcame Challenges in Gardening B. How I Adapted Myself to Life in Cities
C. How I Turned Gardening into a Hobby D. How I Found Nature in Cities

Babies playfully tease others as young as eight months of age. Since language is not required for this behavior, similar kinds of playful teasing might be present in non-human animals.
Now, a new study led by Isabelle Laumer at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior has documented playful teasing in five species of great apes. “Great apes are excellent candidates for playful teasing, as they are closely related to us, engage in social play, show laughter and display relatively sophisticated understandings of others’ expectations,” Laumer says.
Laumer and her colleagues collected videos of five species of great apes: bonobos, Sumatran orangutans, western and eastern gorillas and chimpanzees. There were a total of 34 apes, all housed in zoos. After examining 75 hours of videos, the team documented 504 social interactions between individuals. Of those, 142 were classified as examples of playful teasing, consisting of 18 behaviors, including poking (戳), hitting, pulling on hair and stealing.
The researchers found that the teaser tended to look at their target’s face straight after an action, which suggests that a response was expected. If there wasn’t any reaction, the teaser would usually escalate the teasing, for example by poking their targets even more. And this behavior typically happened in a calm, comfortable setting, which can signify that it was playful, instead of being aggressive. “And much like play in general, it is also helpful in building relationships between members of a group and even testing out social boundaries,” the researchers add.
But the researchers noted that it differed from humans’ play in several ways. “Playful teasing in great apes is one-sided, very much coming from the teaser often throughout the entire interaction,” explains Laumer. “The animals also rarely use play signals like the primate ‘playface’, which is similar to what we would call a smile, or ‘hold’ gestures that signal their intent to play.”
“Studying great apes is critical to understanding which features of human cognition and behaviour are shared and likely evolved millions of years ago in a common ancestor,” says Christopher Krupenye at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. “This study provides exciting evidence that all apes seem to engage in playful teasing behaviour and also charts a path for future research in other species.”
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. What great apes convey through joyful teasing.
B. Why the researchers chose great apes as subjects.
C. What inspired the researchers to conduct the study.
D. Why playful teasing can be independent of language.
9. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word “escalate” in paragraph 4?
A. avoid B. increase C. enjoy D. stop
10. What do we know about playful teasing among apes from the study?
A. It is an effective way to build trust. B. It bears a strong similarity to our joking.
C. It often results in fierce fight between them. D. It is of great help to their social interactions.
11. What is Christopher Krupenye’s attitude towards the study?
A. Favorable. B. Unconcerned. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
D
Teaching is a caregiving profession. We all have that one teacher who inspired us to aim higher, choose a certain career path, or simply discover our passions. This role comes with not only many satisfactions, but lots of pressure to hold yourselves to a higher standard. The responsibilities of teachers only increased during the pandemic, so teachers had to show compassion for students and parents — often without expecting the same treatment. That’s why it’s so easy to think of teachers as selfless people that give it all for future generations.
However, where does that leave teachers? Educators are taught to do many things, but their education is usually lacking in addressing the emotional problems of being a teacher. During the pandemic, I failed to make my online classes as enjoyable as possible for my students. Later, it turned out that other teachers were having problems as well. I had zero reasons to feel so isolated in my experience. What I needed was self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, “Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.” In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.
Being a teacher comes with so many expectations and responsibilities. In theory, nobody’s perfect, but there’s great pressure to be a good role model, educator, mentor, etc. The inner critic has so much more “material” to work with when you’ re in front of a class. It’s no wonder that in stressful situations, it’s harder to control your self-talk. For example, if you fail to upload a lesson on time, your inner critic will jump at the chance to say, “You’ re so forgetful, and I can’t believe you did this.”
It’s no secret that teachers are usually under a lot of stress. A part of the solution can be incorporating self-compassion into teaching, which can not only enhance a satisfactory job but also have a good effect on students.
12. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Teachers’ dedicating themselves to the cause of teaching.
B Teachers’ showing great compassion for themselves.
C. Teachers’ suffering from unknown mental pressure.
D. Teachers’ failing to learn something in their careers.
13. Which of the following fits with Dr. Kristin Neff’s view on self-compassion?
A. Self-compassion is hard for teachers to learn.
B. Self-compassion helps teachers understand students well.
C. The more self-compassion you have, the more benefits you’ll get.
D. The more you understand others, the more self-compassion you’ll have.
14. What can be inferred from the example given in paragraph 3?
A. Teachers’ responsibilities matter. B. Teachers have a lot of work pressure.
C. Teachers play a big role in students’ life. D. It’s normal for teachers to do wrong things.
15. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. The importance of teachers’ self-compassion.
B. The suggestions on raising future generations.
C. The necessity of reducing the burden on teachers.
D. The approaches to teachers’ growth and development.

Knock-knock-knock. “Hello?” I called timidly through my cousin Anita’s bedroom door. No answer. There’s no way she forgot I was moving in today, right? I thought. “Anita? It’s me, Norah! ” I called again.
I had only met my cousin once a couple of years ago when Anita and Aunt Sonam had flown to California to visit. Mom had hoped Anita and I would be friends. But all Anita wanted to talk about was soccer, which was practically a foreign language to me. Secretly, I had felt relieved when the visit was over.
Now, I was standing in my aunt’s tiny apartment in New York City, and there was still no answer from Anita. I knocked again, a little louder this time. Finally, Anita opened the door. She apologized, saying she had been listening to music. But instead of inviting me in, Anita frowned at my massive suitcase.
Behind her, I could see a blue beanbag chair crowded next to a bunk bed (上下铺). In my old room in California, I’d had a double bed all to myself, and my original artwork had covered all the walls. Anita’s walls, on the other hand, were covered with posters of the U. S. women’s soccer team. I didn’t see any free space to hang anything else.
“C-can I come in?” I asked, blushing. Anita nodded, but she barely moved. I had no choice but to squeeze by her into the room. I put my stuff against the wall and Anita started bouncing the soccer ball from her foot to her knee and back again. Suddenly, her foot kicked the ball at an odd angle, and it accidentally flew toward me. “Whoops! ” Anita called. “Think fast!”
But I was still taking in the surroundings, so the ball caught me off guard and bounced off my shoulder. Forcing a smile, I pretended it didn’t bother me. Unsure of what to do, I took out my sketchbook (素描本) and colored pencils and sat down. Just holding my sketchbook made me feel more at ease. I started sketching aimlessly while Anita went back to bounce her ball.
Suddenly, it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

C 5. A 6. C 7. D
由文章第三段“Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space. (虽然我清楚地知道城市不是自然主义的大本营,自然总是在那里等着我去寻找,但我还是花了一段时间来适应我必须步行五分钟以上才能找到一块绿地的事实。)”可知,作者搬到Brixton后面临的一个挑战是适应缺乏绿色空间的情况。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“I’m not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony, four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. (我不是受过正规训练的园丁;20多岁时,我在坎伯韦尔一座山上四层楼高的混凝土阳台上自学。)”可知,作者最初是自学园艺的。故选A。
根据文章最后一段中“But it was so small that you had to look closely, and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. (但它太小了,你必须仔细观察,仔细观察是享受大自然的重要组成部分,无论你在哪里找到它。)”可以推断出,作者学到了仔细观察自然的重要性。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第三段“Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space. (虽然我清楚地知道城市不是自然主义的大本营,自然总是在那里等着我去寻找,但我还是花了一段时间来适应我必须步行五分钟以上才能找到一块绿地的事实。)”和最后一段中“And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver (动摇), it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.(在阳台上,我可以关注一些比我的事业、人际关系或自我意识更重要的事情。当这三者都开始动摇时,正是园艺——以及更广泛的大自然——让我找到了一种新的生活方式。)”可知,整篇文章围绕着作者如何在城市生活中寻找和接近自然,特别是在自己有限的空间里通过园艺活动找到与自然的联系。因此最合适的标题是“How I Found Nature in Cities (我如何在城市中发现自然)”。

D. Doubtful.
B 9. B 10. D 11. A

B. Teachers’ showing great compassion for themselves.
A 13. C 14. B 15. A

第一段中“That’s why it’s so easy to think of teachers as selfless people that give it all for future generations.(这就是为什么很容易把老师看作是无私的人,他们为下一代付出了一切)”指出老师是无私的人,他们为下一代付出了一切;根据指代关系和第二段中“However, where does that leave teachers? Educators are taught to do many things, but their education is usually lacking in addressing the emotional problems of being a teacher.(然而,那对教师来说意味着什么?教育者被教导要做很多事情,但他们的教育通常缺乏解决作为教师所面临的情感问题)”可知,尽管教育者为下一代付出了一切,但他们自己却通常缺乏对自身情感问题的关注。由此可推断出,指示代词“that”指代的是上文中“老师们无私地为教学事业奉献一切”的这一行为。故选A项。
根据第二段中“According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, ‘Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.’ In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. In theory, nobody’s perfect, but there’s great pressure to be a good role model, educator, mentor, etc.(作为一名教师,有很多期望和责任。从理论上讲,没有人是完美的,但要成为一个好的榜样、教育者、导师等等,压力是很大的)”和“For example, if you fail to upload a lesson on time, your inner critic will jump at the chance to say, ‘You’ re so forgetful, and I can’t believe you did this.’(例如,如果你没有按时上传课程,你内心的批评者会抓住机会说:‘你太健忘了,我不相信你竟然会这样做。’)”
通读全文,特别是根据第二段中“What I needed was self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristin Neff, a lead researcher in this field, ‘Self-compassion is simply compassion directed inwards.’ In other words, it’s about showing yourself the same care and understanding that you typically show students or other people in your life. Some people have more self-compassion than others, and working towards achieving more of it can help you in all aspects of your life.(我需要的是自我同情。该领域的主要研究人员克里斯汀·内夫博士说:“自我同情只是向内的同情。”换句话说,就是对自己表现出你通常对学生或生活中其他人表现出的同样的关心和理解。有些人的自我同情比其他人更多,努力获得更多的自我同情可以在你生活的方方面面帮助你)”和最后一段“It’s no secret that teachers are usually under a lot of stress. A part of the solution can be incorporating self-compassion into teaching, which can not only enhance a satisfactory job but also have a good effect on students.(众所周知,教师通常承受着很大的压力。解决方案的一部分可以是将自我同情融入教学中,这不仅可以提升工作的满意度,而且对学生也有好处)”可知,文章主要指出教师需要关注自身的情感问题,通过自我同情来应对压力,同时也能对教学产生积极影响,即论述了教师自我同情的重要性。故选A项。

Dear Chris,
Glad to know that you’re interested in the reading-sharing event held last Friday with the theme of “Reading A Book Together”, I can’t wait to share more details.
To spark our interest in reading original English books, we chose the attractive novel Pride and Prejudice. After two weeks of reading, we all engaged in discussion, where some shared their favorite characters and plots, while others conducted in-depth explorations of the significance and its relevance to us. What impressed me most was not only my growing fluency in reading native English works but also how my classmates offered unique perspectives on interpreting the story, making it a thought-provoking experience.
I know you’ve read the book too. What do you think of it? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Yours,
Zhang Qiang

Anita studied the drawing carefully.

Suddenly, it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action. Quickly turning to a blank page, I broadly outlined the shape of my cousin bouncing the soccer ball. My spirits rose with each new line I drew. It was true that I didn’t enjoy playing sports, but I was really enjoying the challenge of trying to sketch my cousin in action! Although it was my first attempt at something like this, I was pleased with the way I’d captured the energy of Anita’s movements. As I was examining my drawing, I didn’t notice the soccer ball was no longer bouncing. I glanced up to see Anita curiously eyeing my drawing. Nervously, I handed the sketchbook to her.
Anita studied the drawing carefully. I resisted the urge to grab the sketchbook and hide. She must think it was totally weird. However, Anita said it was awesome and asked if she could have it. Before I could respond, she had already ripped the drawing out of the sketchbook. Then Anita rummaged through a drawer for a tape, saying that she wasn’t really into art, but thought the drawing should definitely be on display in “our room”. After taping the drawing over one of her posters, Anita said a few changes needed to be made around the room if I was moving in. With a broad smile, I picked up Anita’s soccer ball and tossed it toward my new roommate. “Think fast! ”
