Unit 13 Reading 一、阅读理解 A Trees are lungs(肺)of the earth. They protect our hometown. However, each year people cut down or burn 143, 000 square kilometers of forests. Farmers do it for the land to grow crops. They also use the wood as fuel to cook and keep warm. Businessmen cut down trees for the wood and turn it into furniture and paper products. However, while people get money from cutting down trees, we are also pushing ourselves into a dangerous situation, because trees are very important to nature. First of all, trees are home to many animals. If people go on cutting down trees, they are destroying the animals’ home, and making them homeless or killing them. Secondly, trees take in carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)and give out oxygen(氧气). That helps clean the air and makes the earth a comfortable place to live in. Thirdly, trees can help the soil(土壤)stay in place. They stop the soil from being washed away when it rains hard. It’s reported that more than 50 countries in the world have set a special day to plant trees. It’s on March 12th in China. More and more people realize the importance of protecting the environment. Now are you ready to plant more trees and make our planet a greener home? So on that day, our family held an activity “bottle of trash challenge”. That means the trash needs to be put in a 600 ml bottle. We decided to challenge ourselves and produce as little trash as possible. My father worked online all day, so he didn’t produce any paper waste except paper napkins. He made the least trash in our family. My mother cooked and produced plenty of kitchen waste, such as vegetable leaves, eggshells and food bags. What’s worse, we couldn’t eat up all the food of the dinner that day. So leftovers couldn’t be avoided. It was not easy for Mom to deal with all the trash, but she found a way to put it all into the bottle. How amazing! My sister, a 16-year-old student, was busy preparing for her exams. She had to use paper to work out math or physics problems. She used only one side of the paper in the past. But that day, she tried to use both sides of the paper because she realized we were challenging ourselves. She did a good job! I was different from my sister. I love snacks and drinks. So my trash was almost from them. I was highly alert (警觉的) that I must produce less waste. I hardly ever had snacks or drinks. It was too difficult, but I did it! I’ve learnt a lot from this activity. I realize that everyone can produce less trash. We should start with small actions to protect the earth! ( )1. There are several ways that can help you protect the earth. Use Reusable Bags When you are shopping for food, clothes or books, use a reusable bag. There are even some stores that offer discounts(折扣)for using reusable bags. These bags are not only useful for shopping. Some people use reusable bags when they move to a new house! Recycle Recycling is such a simple thing to do, but many people don’t do it. A good way to recycle is to find recycling bins, Instead of throwing recyclables(可回收利用物)in the rubbish bins with your non-recyclables, try to find recycling bins around your school. Save Electricity Use energy-efficient light bulbs(节能灯泡) instead of common ones. They last longer, which will also save you some money. Turn off lights, the TV and air conditioner(空调)when you don’t use them. Save Water Turn off the tap(水龙头)as you are brushing your teeth. Don’t turn your shower on until you’re ready to get in and wash your hair. Changing old habits will be good for both the environment and your wallet! Avoid taking cars when possible. Taking public transportation, walking or riding a bike to class are better choices that can help protect the environment. You can also get some exercise. The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home. Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory (迁徙的) birds, they appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay,and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as the" panda of the sea." Thanks to China's top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000,while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000.Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals. To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992.In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins. Since 1992,researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild. 1. Where were the 23 spotted seals put back into the sea?
