Step1. Lead-in
Show a micro lecture to help students learn more about manners in different countries.
Arouse students’ interest. Help students know we have different manners in different countries.
Step2.
Skim and answer
Let students go through the passage quickly and find out the main idea of the passage. It talks about manners in the UK.
Help students get the main idea of the passage.
Step3. Careful reading
Part A How to greet people
1. Read and find out how British people greet others.
2. Watch a micro lecture to learn more about greetings in different countries.
Help students understand how people in different countries greet people in different ways.
Part B How to start a conversation
1. Read and find out what subjects British can talk about to start a conversation and what subjects they should avoid.
2. Play a game. Judge which sentences we can say to start a conversation with British people and which sentences we can’t say.
Help students understand we should pay attention to the topics when we start a conversation with British people.
Part C How to behave in public
1. Read and finish the table about what British do in different situations.
2. Discuss in groups. Talk about what Chinese people will do in the same situations.
Help students understand we can do different things in different countries because of different cultures and customs.
Part D How to behave at home
1. Read and find out how British people behave at home.
2. Discuss in groups. Talk about whether we Chinese should always say “please” and “thank you” all the time at home.
Help students understand the differences between manners at home in the UK and those in China.
Part E Conclusion
Let students find out the golden rule “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Explain the saying to help students understand it better.
Help students conclude how to behave in different places.
Step4.
Post- reading
Group work. Students work in groups of four. Make posters to introduce the similarities and differences between manners in the UK and manners in China. After they finish the posters, invite one or two students to show their posters and give reports.
Help students review and use what they have learnt in the class.
Step5. Homework
作业设计:
1. Finish the related exercises.
2. Find something more about manners in the UK through the Internet.
