By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi- page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five- year - old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs?
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work. B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition. D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
B To form the connection between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
6. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery?
A. Pioneering. B. Short-lived. C. Popular. D. Unpromising.
7. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text?
A. Helpful and cautious. B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent. D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.
C
Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production.
The researchers found that cities in the Northwest in the United States had the greatest potential to raise their own food. Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading.
The study revealed that the United States have extra agricultural land for feeding the domestic population. Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used. In the words of Peters, lead author and associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, “It would be important to make sure policies for supporting local or regional food production benefit conservation and create opportunities for farmers to adopt more sustainable (可持续) practices. Policies should also recognize the ability of the natural resources in a given local or region and consider the supply chain, including ability for food processing and storage.”
Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses.
8. Why do the cities along the Eastern seaside fail to provide enough food?
A. Because citizens are unwilling to grow crops.
B. Because the methods of food production are wrong.
C. Because they don’t have enough land to grow crops.
D. Because their climate limits the agricultural production.
9. What will the focus on local food production lead to?
A. More job opportunities for citizens.
B Conversations with the local government.
C. A discussion on how to make use of land.
D. More specific policies about water resources.
10. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Closely related to. B. Very different from.
C. Exactly the same as. D. Slightly different from.
11 What is the best title of this text?
A. The US Government Stops Wasting Food
B. Cities Learn to Grow Food From the Villages
C. Farmers Have More Chances to Be Employed
D. Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food
D
“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back,” runs an old joke, “and he’ll be speechless.” This rests on a national stereotype: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waggling supposedly goes to prove it.
Susan Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, “Thinking with Your Hands”. It is a masterly tour through a lifetime’s research.
Virtually everyone gestures, not just Italians. Experimental subjects, told after a research session that they were being watched for gestures, apologize for not having made any — but were doing so the entire time. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. A woman born without arms but with “phantom limb syndrome (幻肢综合征)” describes how she uses her phantom arms when she talks — but not when she walks. All this suggests that cognition (认知) is, to some extent, “embodied”; thinking is not all done in your head.
In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but are told to lie and say it jumped. They do so in words — while their hands make a running motion. People who say they believe in sexual equality but gesture with their hands lower when talking about women are not indicating women’s height; they can be shown to have biases (偏见) of which they may be unaware.
In “The Crown”, a historical drama series, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may betray her real emotions, which could be dangerous; they are tied together so she can learn to speak without gesticulating. No one who reads Susan’s book could ever again think that gesturing shows only a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is a complex aid to both.
12. Why does the author mention the old joke in Paragraph 1?
A. To present an argument. B. To describe a scene.
C. To lead in the topic. D. To clarify a doubt.
13. Which statement will Susan Meadow probably agree with?
A. The disabled seldom use gestures. B. Gestures literally embody cognition.
C. Thinking only occurs in the brain. D. Gestures are improper in communication.
14. What does the author try to prove in the last two paragraphs?
A. Gestures may express what the speaker really thinks.
B. People are unaware of the meanings of their gestures.
C. Gesturing during speech shows only a lack of control.
D. Speakers can lie more easily with the help of gestures.
15. Which of the following is the best summary of the text?
A. Speech is a direct channel of information.
B. Gestures make a vital form of communication.
C. Italian’s body language represents a national stereotype.
D. “Thinking with Your Hands” is a lifetime’s research for Susan Meadow.

Ahmad sat at a table in the school cafeteria. The election for fifth-grade class president was only about two weeks away, and Ahmad knew it was time to begin seriously campaigning.
“I think you need a catchy slogan, ” said his friend, twirling(旋转)a pencil as he thought. “How about Authentic and Approachable: Always Ahmad? ”Ahmad beamed. “It’s got a nice ring to it.”
“You need something that people will remember. They won’t forget that Olivia was the fourth-grade president last year and they’ll like the fact that she has experience, “his friend added. Ahmad nodded, grinning. “I know, but I think I can bring some fresh ideas. Do you know Olivia’s plans for the campaign?”
Olivia, meanwhile, sat at her kitchen table with her twin sister. They were eating cupcakes while discussing what to put on the signs they planned to make. At the center of the table were posterboard in bright colors, markers, pens, colored pencils, and crayons.
“Where should we start?” asked her sister ,brushing the cream from her hands. “What do you want people to know about you?” Olivia raised her head and thought for a moment. “I want them to know I’m a hard worker,“ she said, eyes bright and alert. “I have experience as class president. I also have a lot of ideas of making this a great school year.” “Experience is truly important,” commented her sister. “Dad once told me he would vote for someone who had proven to be the kind of leader he was looking for in his company.”
An enormous grin spread across Olivia’s face. “What about Olivia for President-All Original, All Experience,” suggested her sister. “Oh, or Olivia for President, Opportunity for All?“ “I like both of those, ”exclaimed Olivia.“ The first one reminds the voters of my experience. 【46题答案】
【答案】 In my opinion, working in a team is preferable to working individually because I think unity is strength.
There are basically two ways to get work done. One is to work individually. In this way, people can decide for themselves when to start work and how to do it. What's more, they will be able to learn how to solve problems on their own. People may also choose to work in a team, where they can learn from each other and help each other. Besides, they may work out better ways to get work done by discussion.
Personally, I prefer to work in a team, which offers me a chance to learn how to get along with others and to share my experiences with them. As the work can be divided among several people, it can be done efficiently. Teamwork is always important.

Two weeks later on the election, Ms. Pond announced, “Now, we have two candidates with same votes.”Now that the two candidates are tied on the ballot, let’s have a further campaign. Olivia went on stage first to give a speech, but surprisingly he was in a wheelchair. “Because of my injury, I have decided to withdraw from the campaign,” he said. “Why is this happening?” Ms. Pond asked. The classmate who pushed the wheelchair beside him said, “He is trying to save a classmate, so he can’t walk because of his foot injury. He needs to rest for a period of time to recover.” All the people present applauded for the former helpful fourth-grade president, including Ahmed.
Ahmad went to the front of the room to begin his speech after Olivia.“Olivia is a great class president ,” Ahmed said tearfully. “His behavior deeply touched our hearts. Each of us should learn from his noble spirit of sacrificing oneself to save others.” I want to learn from the best. I suggest that Olivia stay on as fifth-grade president when she gets well again. I’d be happy to be his assistant, if he doesn’t mind. It was a thunderous ovation, and both men deserved it. The two men embraced and smiled in a warm round of applause.
