Passage 3
Peter kept his eyes on the ground. It was the
worst day of his life. He didnt pass the boys
basketball tryouts(预选赛). Making the team was
very important to him, but his name was not on the
list.
On the way home, he felt like there was a
heavy weight on his shoulders. He was both angry
and upset. “ I cant believe I didnt make the
team,” he shouted. “How did Alex make the team?
He cant keep up with a tortoise(乌龟)! Why is
Jimmy a better choice than me? He just stands
around moving his arms!” “ Peter!” his mother
said, cutting him off. “Why dont you just stop and
think? Maybe you need a little more practice.
Besides, winning or losing is only half the tryouts.
The other half is learning from your mistakes.”

Passage 4
Carmen had always dreamed of being on stage.
She was excited when she got her first big break
with a part in the school play. She would play the
role of a doctor. She would wear a long, white
doctors coat and carry a big bag that held a
newspaper with blank(空白的) pages and a box of
bandages(绷带). She could hardly wait to act in a
real play on stage.
As the play came closer, Carmen began to
worry about being on stage. She just couldnt
remember her lines. She sat in her bedroom, saying
the lines over and over again. They just wouldnt
stick in her head. It would be terrible if she forgot
her lines on stage. She thought for a long time and
decided to give up the play. She still wanted to be
in the play, but she didnt want to risk making a
fool of herself on stage.
Carmen walked into the kitchen and said she
wouldnt be in the play. “ Dont worry so much,”
Carmens father said. “Youre a talented young girl.
You are a natural performer.” “Yes,” her mother
agreed. “Youll do better if you relax.”
Carmen knew they were right, but she couldnt
stop worrying. Suddenly, she had a great idea. She
took out the newspaper and wrote all of her lines on
the blank pages. Now she could look at the
newspaper and no one would know she was reading
her lines. This would help her relax. That day,
Carmen went on stage. She said her first line. Then
she said her next line. Carmen didnt look at the
newspaper once. Remembering her lines was easy
because she was relaxed. As a result, Carmen
remembered everything. After the play, Carmen let
out a long deep breath and smiled happily. Carmens
parents went backstage, and they rushed over to
congratulate her on a job well done.
“You are great!” her mother said as she
hugged Carmen.
“You are a star!” her father said proudly.

Passage 5
My 10-year-old nephew(外
甥)came for a visit on a hot July
weekend. I enticed(诱使) him
to stay inside by joining him in an online game.
After being mercilessly defeated(击败) by a more
experienced player, I suggested that we relax for a
while.
“Look, Aunt Alice,” he said excitedly as he
ran over to me. “I found a kite. Could we go outside
and fly it?” Glancing out of the window, I noticed
there was not a breeze(微风) stirring. “Im sorry,
Peter,” I said. “The wind is not blowing today. The
kite wont fly.”
“I think its windy enough, and I can get it to
fly,” he answered confidently as he hurried out of
the door. I looked out of the window to watch him.
Up and down the yard he ran, pulling a small
length of string attached to the kite. The plastic kite
remained about his shoulder level. He ran back and
forth, looking back hopefully at the kite trailing
behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful
efforts, he came back in.
I asked, “How did it go?”
“Fine,” he said, not wanting to admit(承认)
defeat. “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me
to return the kite to the shelf, he looked upset,
saying under his breath, “ I guess Ill have to wait
for the wind.”
And it dawned on me how easy it is for us to
depend only on our own efforts to complete what we
want to do. We wait for the “wind” only after we
have used up our own strength. Sometimes, what we
need is just a little outside help.

outside to fly a kite? D
A. Because she hoped her nephew could stay
indoors to relax.
B. Because she was very angry at her loss in an
online game.
C. Because it was not cool enough for kids to fly
kites outdoors.
D. Because it was not a perfect weather situation
for flying a kite.
2. 代词指代 What does the underlined word
“it” in Paragraph 4 refer to? B
A. Coming back.
B. Flying the kite.
C. Playing an online game.
D. Running around the yard.
3. 情绪变化 How did Peters feelings change?
D
A. Excited→worried→confident.
B. Happy→nervous→proud.
C. Surprised→excited→confident.
D. Excited→confident→upset.
4. Which of the following examples can be used to
support the writers opinion? B
A. Peter came first in the running race after hard
training.
B. Nick raised the most money with the help of
his neighbors.
C. Lucy won an award for helping an elderly
person every day.
D. Mike finally climbed to the top of the

Passage 6
For the first thirteen years of my life, I thought
science was boring. It was all about memorizing(熟
记) facts: the order of the planets, the names of
clouds, the parts of a cell. So I decided to become a
novelist when I grew up. I spent all my free time
reading and writing.
However, everything changed in my first year
of middle school. As a person who liked keeping
things organized, I fell in love with the periodic
table(元素周期表). And it led me to basic physics
and chemistry. Science still meant memorizing
facts, but suddenly, they were much more
interesting facts.
Then I had a problem. I wasnt that interested
in becoming a novelist any more, and I really liked
science. But at my school, all the best science
students went on to be doctors. I was always afraid
of blood. Become a doctor? That was the last thing
I wanted to do!
But at the same time, I developed an interest
in the environment. A group of students in the year
above mine had started an environmental club. Once
a week, I went to school extra early in the morning
to attend their club meetings.
In the summer of that year, we attended some
courses on climate change. The climatologists(气候
学家) talked about many different things. I took
notes in a tiny notebook as fast as I could. For the
first time, I learned about the use of the periodic
table. It brought me joy and excitement, and I
dreamed of becoming a climatologist myself.
Now, eleven years has passed, and this dream
has come true. Im deeply interested in the climate
system. I dont think my job will ever be boring.

science? D
A. The order of planets.
B. The clouds names.

2. 句意理解 What does the underlined sentence
in Paragraph 3 mean? B
A. It was never too late to try to be a doctor.
B. The writer didnt want to be a doctor at all.
C. There was nothing better than being a doctor.
D. Being a doctor was the only thing the writer
could do.
3. 细节排序 Which is the right order for the
writers experiences? A

Passage 7
Once a traveler came into a
village which was suffering from
hunger. The villagers asked him to
leave, for they feared he wanted
them to give him food. They told him that there was

any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make
a soup to share with them instead. The villagers
watched doubtfully as he built a fire and filled a pot
with water.
With a great ceremony(仪式), he pulled a
stone from a bag and dropped the stone into the pot
of water. After a moment, he smelt the soup and
shouted with excitement, “How delicious the soup
is!” As the villagers began to show interest, he
mentioned how good the soup would be with just a
little cabbage in it. A villager brought out a cabbage
to share. This episode(情节) repeated itself until
the soup had cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets—
indeed, a full pot of soup that could feed everyone
in the village was ready.
This story describes when there are not enough
resources(资源), humans will store things and
dont want to share. The story of stone soup helps us
realize that, in doing so, we often stop ourselves
and everyone else from having a feast(盛宴).
The meaning of this story goes far beyond food.
We keep to ourselves ideas, love, and energy,
thinking we will be richer, but in fact we make the
world, and ourselves, poorer. The traveler was able
to see that the villagers were holding back, and he
had the ability to inspire(激发) them to give. In
this way, they created a large meal that none of
them could have created alone.
Are you like one of the villagers? If you come
forward and share your gifts, you will inspire others
to do the same. The reward is a feast that can feed
many.
1. Why did the traveler put a stone into the pot?
B
A. To teach the villagers to cook a soup with stone.
B. To inspire the villagers to bring out their own
food.
C. To prove to the villagers that he didnt want
their food.
D. To help villagers to survive by giving them
some food.
2. Which words can best describe the traveler?
C
A. Cruel and dishonest.
B. Foolish and selfish.
C. Wise and warm-hearted.
D. Lovely and hard-working.
3. 文章结构 What is the structure of the text?
(P =Paragraph) A
A B
C D
4. What can we learn from the text? D
A. Storing things in hard times is human nature.
B. A good leader is very necessary in hard times.
C. Skills are needed to inspire people to share
with others.
D. Sharing is more important than keeping things
to oneself.
5. 文体推断 What is the text? A
A. A story. B. A poem.
C. An interview. D. An introduction.
Passage 8
Michael Morgan was six years old when his
father moved a neighbors unwanted piano into their
living room. “ And thats really where the whole
thing started,” he says. “ My mother and
grandmother had played the piano a little bit, but
my father just thought it was a good thing to have in
the house.” Young Michael started piano lessons,

but it was when he saw a conductor(指挥) leading
an orchestra(管弦乐队) on television that he
realized what he really wanted to do.
At the age of eight, he began reading The Joy
of Music by conductor and composer Leonard
Bernstein and got to know how to direct with a baton
(指挥棒).
When Michael entered junior high, he joined
an orchestra and band and learned to play many
instruments. He was just 12 years old when his
teacher asked him to compose and conduct a concert
piece. And that was only the beginning. Throughout
high school, he continued to develop his artistic
talent, and after graduating, he headed to Oberlin
Conservatory of Music.
Morgan works on offering kids a chance to
explore classical music. In his hometown of
Oakland, California, he started to volunteer in local
schools, conducting student orchestras and talking
with kids about music. Later, Morgan developed
MUSE(Music for Excellence), a music education
program for kids.
He brings musicians from Oakland Symphony
(交响乐团) into classrooms to teach kids. He also
works with teachers in after-school programs to
teach students who cant afford lessons.
Morgan says his work is mostly about providing
young people with an entrance into music. “Playing
instruments is a way for kids to express their
feelings and gives them an interest they can carry
with them through life,” he says.
