I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who
didn't finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called "the most
dysfunctional public school district". Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect
something of myself.
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my rodm. Being at Harvard became
what I dreamt about. Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 am to pitch blackness
I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers
making, because those paths wouldn't have had me closer to my goal. Even poverty could not take
away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold
email about 5o Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays: it gave me the
energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep: and it gave me the
determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 18o others had already turned me
down.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my
SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from
Harvard. The first word was "Congratulations!" A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campu
where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be
tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

Nutrition(营养学) is really tricky. It's like a big puzzle with many pieces that scientists are stil
trying to put together. People who worry about their diet want simple labels of 'good' or 'bad' and
clear advice to follow, but the truth is much more, sllppery than that
The science about fats and cholesterol (胆固醇) is often counterintuitive (违反直觉的). Even
qualified dietitians can be confused by it. Some diets that are supposed to be healthy can actually
make your cholesterol go up. This can happen because not eating enough can mess with your body'
hormones (激素).
Too much fat in the diet has long been known to be bad for your heart health, But, after decades
of pointing fingers at all non-yegetable fats, science has now decisively changed its mind. The
research starting in the 195Os, which claimed that eating fats would make your cholesterol go up and
lead to heart problems, has been proved to be not always true. What has been called the 'French
paradox'by American scientists reflects the fact that in France -as in many other countries-people
may have high cholesterol levels and high consumption of saturated fats (饱和脂舫) but low cases of
heart disease. This is because other things. like smoking, which can also affect your heart. are often
ignored. In 2o14, a review of seventy- two different studies of heart disease and saturated fats
conducted by the British Heart Foundation, found that there wasn't a connection between sating fa
and heart problems.
But even though the review showed no connection, government advice remains in place to litnit
the amount of fats eaten, especially saturated ones. The food industry sometimes helps make th
advice that governments give about eating healthy. They made a picture called the 'Eatwell Plate' to
show people what to eat. But most people in the UK eat too much fat, and now it's mostly from
things like vegetable oils, not from animals
28. The underlined word "slippery" in paragraph one is closest in meaning to __.

In the classic movie The Mighty Ducks a group of ice hockey players band together, get better
and eventually win. That's the dream of players on losing teams. But for many kids' sports teams, it
doesn't. There is no winning, no victory cheers
Most people don't like losing, with the discouraging record of the scoreboard. watching while the
other team's players throw victorious hands in the air, Parents adiust complex family schedules fo
seemingly countless practices, then wonder what it's all for when their child's team never comes home
a winner, So is losing all the time really good for children? It can be. Experts agree that losing at sports.
no matter how unending, can allow children to learn from failure. Losing all the time builds philosophy
friendship, sportsmanship, and the idea of athletics as a series of increasing victories. The team may
struggle, but teammates improve moment by moment
Milt Shapiro, who lives in Washington, coaches a team that lost "by football scores". He doesn't
worry if a player cries, even though tears upset parents. "I love the fact that he's crying, which means
he cares and he's passionate. We will change that into something we can use on the field. I would focu
on small victories within each game." he says.
Sports psychologist Caroline Silby, who practices in the Washington area, says in an email that the
real problem with losing all the time lies with the parents. Trving to make children win all the time can
be harmful. Also, losing is not such a big deal that it should be covered up. If parents don't speak abou
games-or seasons-that ended badly, children may think that means that failure is so awful that they
shouldm't even talk about it
Also, Silby says, if parents get angry, blame unskilled players, or talk endlessly about a loss, they
ruin the whole point of being on a team: a sense of belonging. Athletes who have that feeling-that they
are connected to something larger than themselves-are less stressed and have higher self-esteem. And
overall. she says, losing seasons can give athletes some perspective and help them grow better at
managing frustration and doubt
32. What's the experts' opinion about children's losing at sports?
A. It exercises parents' patience.
B. It's beneficial to kids' growth
C. It makes a team less competitive. D. It leads to children's short-lived emotion
33. How does Milt Shapiro react to his team's loss?
A. He changes their training plans
B. He gets angry with his students.
6
C. He comforts players with small gifts. D. He treats it as a learning opportunity
34. What does Caroline Silby adyise parents to do?
A. Hide kids' losing properly
B. Put more effort into kids' training
C. Encourage kids to face failure directly. D. Draw kids' attention to things beyond games
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How Do Kids React to Losing at Sports?
B. How Does Losing at Sports Impact Children?
C: How Can Losing at Sports Be Good for Kids?
D. How Should Coaches Respond to Children's Losing?
