Addresser:Gregor
Addressee:Samia
Time:Jan. 12th Friday
Hi Samia,
Just a quick email to say that sounds like a great idea. This Saturday is better for me because I’m going to meet my parents on Sunday. So if that’s still good for you, why don’t you come here? Then you can see the new flat and all the work we’ve done on the kitchen since we moved in. We can eat at home and then go for a walk in the afternoon. It’s going to be so good to catch up. I want to hear all about your new job!
Our address is 52 Charles Road, but it’s a bit difficult to find because the house numbers are really strange here. If you turn left at the post office and keep going past the big white house on Charles Road, there’s a side street behind it with the houses 50—56 in. Don’t ask me why the side street doesn’t have a different name! But call me if you get lost and I’ll come and get you. Let me know if there’s anything you do/don’t like to eat. Really looking forward to seeing you!
See you soon!
Gregor

Do you feel a little sleepy after lunch? Well, that’s normal. Your body naturally slows down then. What should you do about it? Don’t reach for a coffee! Take a nap (打盹) instead.
There are some advantages (好处) of a daily nap. First of all, you are more efficient (高效的) after napping. You remember things better and make few mistakes. If not, you may disturb (打搅) your sleep-wake pattern. Next, a 20~30 minute nap is best. If you sleep longer, you may fall into a deep sleep. After waking up from a deep sleep, you will feel worse. Furthermore, you should set an alarm clock. That way, you can fully relax during your nap. You won’t have to keep looking at the clock and won’t oversleep.

(22-23六年级上·上海·期末)For many people, our closest encounter with wild animals is at a zoo. Zoos let us see amazing animals like lions, tigers, and even small lizards up close. It’s fun and educational, but is it really the best place for the animals?
In the past, people could only see wild animals as stuffed displays in museums. Later, explorers caught live animals and showed them in menageries, which were early zoos. Back then, people didn’t care much about the animals’ well-being. Today’s zoos are different. They now provide bigger spaces and try to make the animals’ homes look like their natural environments.
Some people think it’s cruel to keep animals in cages just for entertainment. However, zoos argue that they help educate people about wildlife conservation. In the UK, a law passed in 1981 requires zoos to teach visitors about conservation. Many zoos also help support and fund programs to protect wildlife.
Zoos often say they are important for saving endangered species that could become extinct because of climate change. Robert Young, a professor of conservation, said many species would not exist without zoos. For example, Chester Zoo in the UK helped save the golden skiffia fish from disappearing.
As the debate about zoos continues, new technologies like virtual reality may offer different ways to experience wildlife.

3.What does the word “endangered” in the passage mean?
A.safe and protected B.likely to become extinct
C.common and widespread D.healthy and thriving

B.The main purpose of zoos has shifted to solely entertainment.

A.He believes zoos are cruel and should be shut down.
B.He thinks zoos are vital for protecting endangered species.
C.He feels that zoos do not provide enough education for visitors.
D.He thinks zoos are only focused on entertainment.
(22-23六年级上·上海·期末)Last summer, when I was in Thailand, I had a lot of free time. A friend suggested I volunteer to teach in a nearby refugee camp. The families there had been forced to leave their homes because of the war in Myanmar.
The “school” was just a small bamboo hut with a roof made of straw, much like the temporary homes the refugees lived in. It was the rainy season, so it poured a lot. Every morning, I would ride my scooter from my comfortable hotel to the camp, and I’d often arrive covered in mud, which made the kids laugh. Some of my friends asked, “Why are you volunteering in a refugee camp? Don’t you miss the fun of city life?” I told them I needed something different from the usual “good times”. The kids from Myanmar were eager to learn and really bright. I was impressed by how quickly they picked things up. Talking to them made me think a lot. When you grow up in a war zone, you have to mature quickly and face tough situations.
Leaving your home and living in a new country teaches you a lot about life. I’ve always found volunteering easy because I like to do new things. My job also gives me the freedom to choose when and where I work. Even though I don’t get paid for volunteering, I’ve learned that money isn’t the only reward. The experiences I have are priceless. You meet great people, and working with those who have less than you makes you appreciate what you have and stop complaining about things you can’t change. That lesson is worth more than money. I’m not a super nice person. I can be selfish, just like anyone else. But you don’t need to be perfect to help others. Honestly, I’d be suspicious if someone said they never have selfish reasons for volunteering. In the end, volunteering benefits you too. It helps you grow as a person, and that can lead to a richer and more meaningful life.
1.What challenge did the author face every morning on the way to the refugee camp?
A.He had to hike through the jungle.
B.He often arrived at the camp covered in mud from riding his scooter in the rain.
C.He had to travel by boat because of flooding.
D.He would get lost on the way to the camp.
2.What does the word “mature” mean in the sentence, “When you grow up in a war zone, you have to mature quickly”?
A.become responsible and wise beyond your age B.become physically stronger
C.move to a new place D.take care of others
3.What impressed the author about the kids from Myanmar?
A.They had traveled to many countries.
B.They were always happy despite the challenges they faced.
C.They were eager to learn and learned quickly.
D.They had advanced technology in the refugee camp.
4.What can be inferred about the author’s view of volunteering?
A.He views volunteering as a duty that everyone should perform.
B.He sees it as a way to earn extra money and enjoy new experiences.
C.He believes volunteering is important because it benefits both the volunteer and the people being helped.
D.He thinks only kind and selfless people should volunteer.
5.How does the author’s experience with volunteering challenge the idea that people must be completely selfless to help others?
A.The author admits that he is not a perfect person, but still finds value in helping others.
B.The author believes people should always put others before themselves when volunteering.
C.The author doesn’t believe in helping others unless there is something in it for him.
D.The author thinks everyone volunteers for selfish reasons and shouldn’t hide it.

A new term means a new start. What do you like to do to welcome the beginning of your new study life?
David
I do a special thing on the first day of every term. On the night before, I use a piece of paper and coloured pens to make a “first day of school” sign. I draw pictures on it. The next day, I take a picture with the sign in front of the school. To me, this is a meaningful way to welcome the beginning of a new term.
Mary
At the beginning of the school year, I will write down some words about study and life. For example, now as a freshman in middle school, I write “Dreams big and work hard” on a piece of white paper. After finishing all these, I will put up this piece of paper on the wall by my bed. Whenever I look at it when I’m tired, it can encourage me to learn.
Mike
The most important thing to do at the start of the new term is to look back at the happy memories (记忆) of the summer holiday. I’ll turn on the camera and open my notebook the night before the new term starts.
Susan
I will have a haircut at the beginning of a new term. The day before I go to school, I’ll go to the barber shop (理发店) near my neighbourhood by myself. I feel really relaxed and have fun during the haircut. After I get a new hairstyle, I feel like everything is new from now on.

(22-23六年级上·上海浦东新·期末)No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to. People who are prevented (阻止) from sleeping begin to suffer obvious (明显的) effects after a few days—they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours.
There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about 7 and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours or more. If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get—their needs may be different. Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleep—office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.
Children sleep more than grown-ups—perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage. Sleep patterns also tend (倾向) to be different in the old people, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.
1.Some people can’t think clearly because ________.
A.they have bad memory B.they feel sleepy during the working hours
C.they don’t have enough sleep D.they may be kept from going to bed
2.Whether you have got enough sleep is judged (判断) by ________.
A.how many hours you have slept B.how many hours you need to sleep
C.if you do exercise and physical work D.if you feel fresh and energetic
3.According to the passage, a boy of 18 years old sleeps ________.
A.as long hours as a grown-up B.much longer hours than a grown-up
C.for 14 hours each night D.for less than 8 hours each night
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.All grown-ups must have at least eight-hour sleep. B.Most of grown-ups sleep for seven or eight hours.
C.Quite a few people need 5 hours or less in sleep. D.No grown-ups sleep more than ten hours.
5.Who may sleep less during the night and have to take a nap during the day?
A.Children B.Grown-ups C.Young people D.Old people

Also, you can learn things more easily after taking a nap. Finally, a nap may increase your self-confidence (自信) and make you cleverer. It may even cheer you up.
But, there are some simple rules you should follow about taking a nap. First, take a nap in middle of the day, about eight hours after you wake up.

5.What is Robert Young’s attitude toward zoos?

A.All grown-ups must have at least eight-hour sleep. B.Most of grown-ups sleep for seven or eight hours.
