It was 6:00 a.m. on Monday. With his books in his bag, 13-year-old Jim began his way to school, the Mcedo-Beijing school in a slum (贫民窟) in Nairobi, capital of Kenya (肯尼亚首都内罗毕). China helped build this school in 2001 for children from poor families.
After half an hour, he got to school. Jim went straight to his class to do his class work. It is usual that students in this school are ready for their lessons before the teacher comes.
To study in the school was a dream for the poor boy before. Jim’s mother made a living by washing clothes for others. Some days she took home nothing, and some days she could get a little. It was hardly enough to buy them a full meal for a day. Before joining the Mcedo-Beijing school, Jim was at home with his seven brothers. They picked up some rubbish to make money.
The school brings these children the hope for the future by giving a chance (机会) to get education. At the same time, it also brings them the love from others. “For me, education is the best gift,” said Jim.

Tape-Measure Murder (软尺谋杀案) is a short story by Agatha Christie. In the story, Miss Marple, a dressmaker, finds that Mrs. Spenlow is dead in her house in a small village called St Mary Mead. All the people, even the police, think that Mr. Spenlow is the murderer (凶手) because he is so quiet after finding his wife’s death. But after the police talk to Miss Marple, they find out the real murderer.
The best part of the story is when Miss Marple tells the police how she solves the event (事件) by watching a small pin (别针) on a policeman’s coat. She watches so carefully and talks about it so clearly that the police don’t believe she is just a dressmaker.
Miss Marple is my favorite character in the story. I think she is very special because she is just an old woman but she is even smarter than the policemen. I never thought that an old woman could be the main character of a detective (侦探) story. But that is such an old woman who helped the police to solve the event.
Can you guess who the murderer is? Read the book to find out! You will enjoy the story very much because the ending is so surprising.
