20. What does Mickey Mouse represent?
A. Characters of Disney.
B. Famous cartoon creation.
C. Popular culture in America.
C 18. A 19. A 20. C
Mickey Mouse is not Walt Disney’s first successful cartoon creation, but he is certainly his most famous one. Supposedly, Disney took his inspiration of drawing Mickey from the field mice that used to run into his old studio in Kansas City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse in the now-familiar shorts with two buttons and gave him the yellow shoes. But we do know that Disney had intended to call him Mortimer until his wife Lillian started to call him Mickey Mouse. Disney planned Mickey’s first show in the short cartoon Plane Crazy. By the 1930s, Mickey’s image had circled the world. He won the heart of everyone and became a superstar. Although he has received a few little changes throughout his lifetime, he has remained true to his nature since those first cartoons. Mickey is appealing because he is nice. He is both good-natured and smart. Perhaps that was Disney’s own image of himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey’s voice in all the cartoons for twenty years? When interviewed, he would say, “There’s a lot of the mouse in me.” And that mouse has remained one of the most well-known images in America. Actually, it stands for one of the most enjoyable cultures in America. For other images, we’ll talk about them later.
A
What happens to old Olympics stadiums after the medals have all been awarded? Here are four host cities taking a different approach, repurposing their Olympics structures for less sporty uses.
Los Angeles, California
The Grand Olympic Auditorium was constructed in 1924, and after the Games it continued to host boxing and wrestling matches. The building even served as the film set for parts of Rocky. The venue was so well known around Hollywood — hosting greats like Cassius
Clay, Rage Againstthe Machine, Andre the Giant and Little Richard.
Lake Placid, New York
Most people entering the now remodeled 1980 Olympic Village in Lake Placid are in a lot of trouble. It’s not much of a surprise, though; this Olympic Village was built with a prison in mind, because the only way Lake Placid could get funding from the government for the Olympics was that they had a secondary purpose for any new buildings. Only the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBP) offered to be the second use for the Village complex.
Beijing, China
After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the National Aquatics Center was restored. And half of it is now Asia’s largest water park, called Happy Magic Water Cube. There are 13 waterslides, a lazy river, a wave pool and a spa. The second floor of the building has an auditorium with 17, 000 seats.
Helsinki, Finland
Originally constructed in 1937, the Tennispalatsi was never meant to last as a permanent structure. It first housed a car dealership and was restored one year later to add four tennis courts as the city began opening various sports venues around town. Then the venue hosted basketball when the Games finally came to Helsinki in 1952. Now, the Tennispalatsi holds the Helsinki City Art Museum and several restaurants.
21. Which Olympic stadium may appeal to movie star-chasers?
A. The Tennispalatsi. B. The Olympic Village.
C. The National Aquatics Center. D. The Grand Olympic Auditorium.
22. What was essential for the government to fund the 1980 Olympic Village?
A. Lake Placid promised to host a second Olympics.
B. Lake Placid could convince FBP to build a new prison.
C. The Olympic Village managed to solve all the troubles.
D. The Olympic Village could be used as a prison afterwards.
23. Why was the Tennispalatsi in Helsinki restored in 1938?
A. To prepare for the 1952 Olympics. B. To meet the demand for sports space.
C. To provide venues for basketball training. D. To expand the business of a car dealership.
D 22. D 23. B

“Promise me you won’t marry a farmer,” says a character in The Love of a Good Woman. Instantly, the reader is in Alice Munro territory. Ms Munro, the daughter of a silver-fox farmer, was brought up in rural Ontario. As a girl, she was told that the worst thing you could do was to “think you were smart”. She enrolled at the University of Western Ontario to study journalism but dropped out when her scholarship dried up. Then Ms Munro married young and moved to Vancouver.
It was not the housework that dragged her down; it was the assumption that women who tried to do something as challenging as writing were inappropriate. She wrote when her daughters were taking a nap. Deep in domesticity in suburban Vancouver, she dreamed up plots. She was as consumed by the routine of daily life—cooking, cleaning, taking care of her children—as by the stories she was writing in her head in the deadness of early afternoon. Each story has layers, ranging from the ordinary to the excellent. Her characters do anything to avoid confronting their pain.
In 1977, her first story, Royal Beatings, was published in the New Yorker; it was followed by many more. Her first book, Dance of the Happy Shades, won the Governor General’s Award—one of Canada’s highest literary awards—yet still she was dismissed by many as a shy housewife. In 2013, she became the first Canadian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, but was too unwell to travel to Stockholm for the ceremony. Instead, the Nobel Foundation visited her at her daughter’s home in Victoria, British Columbia, and recorded an interview. In it, she said she wanted her stories to move people. She wanted readers to feel they were different when they finished reading.
24. Why did Alice Munro quit school?
A. She was short of tuition fees. B. She got married and had to leave.
C. She held no liking for journalism. D. She was subject to traditional views.
25. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?
A. Her commitment to writing. B. Her longing for freedom.
C. Her will to escape housework. D. Her desire to earn money.
26. Which of the following can best describe Alice Munro as a writer?
A. Persistent and shy. B. Devoted and productive.
C. Diligent and caring. D. Open-minded and modest.
27. What made Alice Munro absent from the Nobel Prize ceremony?
A. Her poor health condition. B. Her unwillingness to travel.
C. Her dislike for public events. D. Her attendance at an interview.
A 25. A 26. B 27. A

From hot springs to rocks deep beneath the ocean floor, bacteria grow in the unlikeliest places. Now, Manuel Porcar, a microbiologist at the University of Valencia and the chief executive officer of Darwin, a company that works on industrial applications of microbes, found another bacterial habitat: the microwave.
Porcar and his team at Darwin explore different environments in search of new microbes that could have industrial applications. They were keen to explore non-traditional environments, such as the microwave. Alba Iglesias, a researcher in Porcar’s lab and co-author of the study, sampled microwaves from homes, shared spaces, laboratories, and industrial settings. Upon sequencing (排序) the samples and culturing the bacteria in Petri dishes, the team identified various species.
Home microwaves harbored a lot of bacteria that are found on the human skin and other kitchen surfaces that humans frequently contact. The scientists also noted some pathogenic bacteria, a group with the ability to cause diseases in their host organisms. Pankaj Mehta, a biophysicist at Boston University studying microbial ecosystems, cautioned the study is still at the initial phase and that there are technical reasons to not be too worried about pathogens.
While the lab microwaves housed some skin bacteria, they were home to extremophiles that are known to resist high temperatures and harsh doses of radiation, like the ones found in deserts or on solar panels. For instance, the team found Deinococcus, one of the strongest bacteria alive with the ability to survive in outer space as well.
“I’ve constantly for 15 to 20 years been saying ‘clean the outside of your microwave to make sure it’s disinfected. Now it looks like we’re going to include the inside of the microwave as well. ” Mehta believes that this is yet another example of how microbial communities can survive in extreme environments—from space shuttles to nuclear reactors, and now microwaves.
28. What’s the purpose of Porcar’s study?
A. To expand industrial applications. B. To explore new microbial communities.
C. To seek new microbes for industrial use. D. To test the function of industrial microwaves.
29. What does the underlined word “culturing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Inspiring. B. Growing. C. Assigning. D. Sharing.
30. What can we learn from Pankaj Mehta’s words?
A. There is no need to worry about any microwave bacteria.
B. The sequencing method can precisely identify all bacteria.
C. Samples can determine specific microwave bacteria types.
D. It is technically difficult to detect microwave pathogen risk.
31. What is the characteristic of extremophiles?
A. They are easily killed in normal temperatures.
B. They can cause diseases in their host organisms.
C. They have the ability to endure severe conditions.
D. They are transferred from the outside of the microwave.
C 29. B 30. D 31. C

You’re walking somewhere you’ve never been before and suddenly feel as though you’ve strolled down the same road already. You’re experiencing the well-known phenomenon dejà vu, but what is déjà vu really, and why does the strange feeling happen?
Déjà vu is the feeling that something a person is currently experiencing has already occurred in the past. Experts refer to this phenomenon as a memory illusion involving familiarity and unfamiliarity. It happens when an experience is familiar against people’s knowledge that this sense of familiarity is inaccurate.
Some people experience déjà vu to a frequent degree to them. Such cases can be caused by substance abuse, migraine (偏头痛) and anxiety. However, temporal lobe epilepsy is thought to be the principal cause of such frequent dejà vu. It may arise from attacks in the brain’s temporal lobe or disorder in brain regions involved in storing and recalling memory. However, dejà vu is also experienced by individuals without epilepsy or other conditions, so there must be other explanations as to why it occurs.
One possible mechanism is the memory-based theory which centers on the role of familiarity and recognition in déjà vu. This theory suggests that dejà vu arises when a current situation shares similarities with a previously encountered but forgotten experience. It may result from our brain’s attempt to make sense of these perceived similarities and create a feeling of recognition, even if we cannot consciously recall the original experience.
O’Connor, a lecturer at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and his team used a brain scanning technique to check which parts of the brain are active when déjà vu is triggered in the lab. From their result, it was not the hippocampus (海马体) that was active, but the medial prefrontal cortex, a region involved in resolving conflicts between what we remember experiencing and what we’ve actually experienced. This region of the brain shoots off a signal when such a mismatch occurs, and this may explain why déjà vu is more common in young people than old. As a person gets older, dejà vu is not as frequent because the general checking system is in decline.
32. What is dejà vu according to the text?
A. A future prediction. B. A new brain function.
C. A rare mental disease. D. A memory confusion.
33. What is the major cause of déjàvu in some cases?
A. Lack of sleep. B. Temporal lobe epilepsy.
C. Intense headaches. D. Addictive substance misuse.
34. What does the memory-based theory focus on?
A. When déjà vu occurs. B. Why déjàvuis rare.
C. How déjà vu is formed. D. Where déjà vu starts.
35. Why is dejà vu less common in old people?
A. Memory fades in the hippocampus. B. They are less sensitive to the outside.
C. Their medial prefrontal cortex declines. D. They have fewer unfamiliar experiences.
D 33. B 34. C 35. C
根据第二段关键句“Déjà vu is the feeling that something a person is currently experiencing has already occurred in the past. Experts refer to this phenomenon as a memory illusion involving familiarity and unfamiliarity. (既视感是指一个人目前正在经历的事情已经发生在过去的感觉。专家将这种现象称为涉及熟悉和不熟悉的记忆错觉)”可知,既视感是一种记忆错觉。由此可知,根据短文既视感是一种记忆混乱。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段关键句“However, temporal lobe epilepsy is thought to be the principal cause of such frequent dejà vu. (然而,颞叶癫痫被认为是这种频繁既视感的主要原因)”可知,颞叶癫痫被认为是这种频繁既视感的主要原因。由此可知,在某些情况下,既视感的主要原因是颞叶癫痫。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段关键句“One possible mechanism is the memory-based theory which centers on the role of familiarity and recognition in déjà vu. This theory suggests that dejà vu arises when a current situation shares similarities with a previously encountered but forgotten experience. (一种可能的机制是基于记忆的理论,该理论以熟悉和识别在既视感中的作用为中心。这一理论表明,当当前的情况与以前遇到但被遗忘的经历有相似之处时,就会产生既视感的感觉)”可知,基于记忆的理论以熟悉和识别在既视感中的作用为中心,关注既视感是怎样发生的。由此可知,基于记忆的理论关注既视感是如何形成的。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段关键句“From their result, it was not the hippocampus (海马体) that was active, but the medial prefrontal cortex, a region involved in resolving conflicts between what we remember experiencing and what we’ve actually experienced. This region of the brain shoots off a signal when such a mismatch occurs, and this may explain why déjà vu is more common in young people than old. As a person gets older, dejà vu is not as frequent because the general checking system is in decline.

Pessimists typically have a doubtful outlook—they may focus heavily on what can go wrong. As a consequence, they may be genuinely surprised when things work out, or question the positive outcomes. Because pessimists always expect the worst things to happen, they tend to have lower well-being. ___36___
It might be hard to shake off pessimism, and it is OK to be a little pessimistic. After all, a healthy amount of pessimism can help us prepare for challenges. However, if you want to overcome excessive pessimism, here are a few strategies that can work.
Exploit positive expressions. ___37___ Try writing down a few simple positive affirmations somewhere within your reach and repeat them often, such as “Today will be a productive day.” and “I am capable of doing great things.”
Exercise gratitude. Pessimists tend to hold on to unfavorable experiences. ___38___ And when you recite your affirmations, also tell yourself something that you are thankful for.
Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is being present without judgments. Thus, you avoid attaching a negative label to everything when you practice mindfulness and see things in a realistic light.
___39___ If you catch yourself expecting negative outcomes, try to change your mindset. For instance, if you tell yourself, “I don’t want to go to this party because I won’t enjoy it,” try saying, “I may or may not enjoy the party, but I won’t know if I don’t go.”
Do what you can, and hope for the best. You may still expect the worst. ___40___ If you put in enough effort and are prepared for the worst, great things do indeed happen.
Pessimism can ruin the joys, but it isn’t always bad, as long as it is balanced with a healthy dose of optimism. Yet, if you are overly pessimistic, you may start experiencing anxiety and show symptoms of depression. Luckily, pessimism is something we can overcome.
A. Reframe your thoughts.
B. Develop a critical mindset.
C. But terrible things are actually rare.
D. It’s important to forgive ourselves for our shortcomings.
E. To keep pessimism at bay, repeat positive statements to yourself.
F. Try to call up good things in the past and everything you appreciate.
G. Also, they usually focus on their weaknesses and thus lack confidence.

根据空前“Because pessimists always expect the worst things to happen, they tend to have lower well-being.(因为悲观主义者总是期待最坏的事情发生,所以他们的幸福感往往较低。)” 而第二段“It might be hard to shake off pessimism, and it is OK to be a little pessimistic.(要摆脱悲观情绪可能很难,而且有点悲观也是正常的。)” G“Also, they usually focus on their weaknesses and thus lack confidence.(此外,他们通常关注自己的弱点,因此缺乏自信。)”
根据段首句“Exploit positive expressions.(利用积极的表达)”以及空后“Try writing down a few simple positive affirmations somewhere within your reach and repeat them often.(试着在你触手可及的地方写下一些简单的积极肯定语,并经常重复它们。)” E“To keep pessimism at bay, repeat positive statements to yourself.(为了抵御悲观情绪,对自己重复积极的陈述。)”符合语境,且其中的“repeat positive statements to yourself”与段落中的“repeat them often”相呼应。故选E。
根据空前“Pessimists tend to hold on to unfavorable experiences.(悲观主义者往往执着于不愉快的经历。)”以及空后“And when you recite your affirmations, also tell yourself something that you are thankful for.(当你背诵你的肯定语时,也要告诉自己一些你感激的事情。)” F“Try to call up good things in the past and everything you appreciate.(试着回想过去的好事和你所感激的一切。)”中的“good things in the past”与后文中的“something that you are thankful for”相呼应。”
根据下文“If you catch yourself expecting negative outcomes, try to change your mindset. For instance, if you tell yourself, “I don’t want to go to this party because I won’t enjoy it,” try saying, “I may or may not enjoy the party, but I won’t know if I don’t go.”(如果你发现自己预期会有不好的结果,试着改变你的心态。例如,如果你告诉自己,“我不想去参加这个聚会,因为我不会享受它,”试着说,“我可能会也可能不会享受这个聚会,但如果我不去,我就不会知道。”)”可知,本段讲述的是通过改变思维方式来对抗悲观情绪。选项A“Reframe your thoughts.(重塑你的想法)”概括了本段主题。故选A。
根据空前“You may still expect the worst.(你可能仍然预期最坏的结果。)”以及空后“If you put in enough effort and are prepared for the worst, great things do indeed happen.(如果你付出足够的努力并做好最坏的打算,好事确实会发生。)” C“But terrible things are actually rare.(但可怕的事情实际上很少发生。)”

Lucas had always prided himself on being the go-to guy for fixing things. Whether it was a leaky faucet or a broken toy, his friends knew he could tackle any problem that came his way. But today was different — he faced a challenge that made his palms sweat.
It was Saturday morning, and Lucas had promised his younger sister, Mia, that they would spend the day working on her science project — a model of the solar system. The night before, they had gone to the local craft store, excitedly picking out paints, foam (泡沫) balls, and a variety of materials. Mia could hardly contain her eagerness to present the project at school on Monday, and Lucas was determined to help her make it impressive.
However, disasters struck as they began putting together the model. Lucas had intended to use a thin piece of wood for the base, but he accidentally dropped it, and the wood ended up in two pieces. At the sight of the broken base, Lucas felt as if his heart missed a beat. Mia’s face fell, and her enthusiasm faded like a distant star.
“Lucas! What are we going to do?” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with disappointment.
“Okay, let’s not panic,” he replied, striving to keep his voice steady. “We can fix this. Let’s just think it through.”
Lucas surveyed the mess on the floor. The broken pieces lay scattered next to the colorful foam balls they had painted with care. They needed a stable base for the model, but there was no extra wood on hand. Unfortunately, the craft store was closed for the weekend, and there was no way he could ask their parents for help — Mom and Dad were still at work.
“Mia,” Lucas suddenly said, a spark of inspiration flashing into his mind, “how about we use that old coffee table in the garage?”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Mia was confused by her brother’s suggestion.

“Now we can start building the model!” Mia cheered.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mia was confused by her brother’s suggestion. Lucas continued, “We need to cut the table down to the size of the base. ” At his words, Mia’s eyes lit up with excitement. He led her to the garage, where the coffee table stood, dusty but solid. Once they dragged the table into the sunlight and gave it a quick wipe, they set about measuring and marking the dimensions they needed carefully. It was quite a challenge, but through some efforts, they finally had a flat piece that would work perfectly for the model.
“Now we can start building the model!” Mia cheered. They spent the next few hours attaching the foam balls — each representing a planet — to the base, painting them brilliant colors, and adding labels. By late afternoon, the model was completed, and they had turned a disaster into a memorable experience of problem-solving. Mia stood back, hands on her hips, admiring their work. “It looks fantastic! Thanks, Lucas!” He smiled, a sense of satisfaction welling up inside him. It was their resolve and teamwork that saved the day.
①开始做:set about doing/set out to do
②完成:complete/accomplish
③欣赏:admire/appreciate

C The Olympic Village managed to solve all the troubles.

D
