In 1971, a young man who grew up very poor was traveling across the country, trying to make a new start for himself. Along the way he had completely run out of money and was forced to spend the night in his car. This continued until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast.
After eating his first good meal in weeks, he lied to the waiter, telling him he had lost his wallet. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked behind the chair where the young man had been sitting. He bent down, and came up with a $20 bill that looked as if it had fallen on the floor and said, “Son, you must have dropped this.” . The young man couldn’t believe his luck! He quickly paid for the breakfast, left a tip, bought gas with the change, and headed West.
On the way out of town, he began to understand what that fellow did. Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. “Maybe that fellow just knew I was in trouble and he helped me in a way that didn’t embarrass me. So I just made a promise to help other people if I can.”
Later, he worked very hard and became a rich man. Now, he lives near Kansas City. Each year he gives away thousands of dollars. He is known as the “Secret Santa” because at Christmas time each year, he personally hands money out to those on the street and at restaurants. Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes (刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl cursing (咒骂) her teachers. But back home, British people were roaring, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate. Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring town. But David Brent, the boss of the UK office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because Britons cruelly make fun of people they like or dislike... and of themselves. He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”. “Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told,’ It won’t happen to you’.”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every American The Office episode (集). Even if they’re not perfect, the characters “learn a lesson” for the future. But in David Brent’s office — and in lots of UK comedies — the last scene is often sad. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems true to life and so much funnier. It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can be a window into a culture.
46.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To show that British humor is not funny at all.
B.To show that American people don’t understand British people.
C.To show that Britain and America have different stereotypes.
D.To show that humor may mean different things in different cultures.
47.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A.David Brent is quite a nice guy.
B.Michael Scott is a rather mean guy.
C.Episodes in the US version often end in a boring way.
D.Episodes in the UK version often end with a hopeless note.
48.Why was Michael Scott from the US version of The Office made “slightly nicer” than the UK version’s David Brent?
A.To make the character more acceptable to American viewers.
B.To agree with the American workplace environment.
C.Because Ricky Gervais believes people are kind by nature.
D.Due to the requirement for a more gentle sense of humor in American comedies.
49.What can we infer from the article?
A.Britons do not like to make fun of others.
B.British comedy often has a moral message.
C.American people are brought up to be more positive.
D.Foreigners have little difficulty in understanding the Chinese cross- talk show.
50.What is the author’s opinion of comic differences?
A.They are slight differences that can be ignored.
B.They can partly show cultural differences.
C.They show stereotypes of different cultures.
D.They help people communicate with each other.
D
The world is full of advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, but sometimes doing so just isn’t possible. If you are struggling with a sleep disorder, are a shift worker or have a baby who. wakes every few hours, being told how to sleep well can be annoying. For others, despite feeling exhausted all day, a fourth episode of your favorite TV series can seem more appealing than going to bed.
How do you know if you are sleep-deprived? For some people, the answer will be obvious; for others, it may be less so. Russell Foster, a professor at the University of Oxford, specifies three signs that you are probably not getting enough sleep: “Feeling that you don’t perform at your peak during the day; oversleeping on free days; or craving (渴望得到) a nap during the day.”
“Lack of good sleep can cause an imbalance in your appetite hormones,” says Martin Meadows, a registered dietitian: “The hormone ghrelin, which causes you to feel hungry, increases and the hormone leptin, which signals that you are full; decreases.”
As Meadows says: “It’s a perfect storm where we want to eat more and we don’t know when to stop, combined with the fact that when we are sleep-deprived our willpower is lower, arid it all becomes pretty tricky. Poor sleep, or sleep deprivation (匮乏), leads to an increased likelihood of poor lifestyle choices. Many of us get stuck in the habit of eating junk food, and the knock-on effect is that the junk food disturbs our sleep, because it’s higher in sugar; it’s more stimulating.”
“Short term, you can get away with the negative influence of sleep deprivation of you,” says Foster. “It’s in the long term that things start to fall apart.” He catalogues the ill effects: “Your cognitive performance. drops with accumulated sleep deprivation—your communication skills, your decision-making skills, your memory.” There is also an increased risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, depression and psychosis.
Fortunately, according to Meadows, most of us could do with an extra hour to an hour and a half of sleep each night to cope with sleep deprivation. And if you had a bad night’s sleep, Meadows recommends “making a conscious effort to choose foods such as wholegrains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Because they are packed with fiber and water, they will help you feel full while limiting your overall energy intake.”
51.The examples given in the first paragraph are intended to ______.
A.list reasons why people hate advice on good sleep B.highlight the harm caused by sleep deprivation
C.present the factual phenomenon of lack of sleep D.form a contrast with the following paragraphs
52.How does lack of good sleep affect appetite according to Martin Meadows?
A.It disturbs the feeling of being hungry or full. B.It ruins your appetite instead of feeling hungry.
C.It causes imbalance in eating and sleeping D.It has no impact on appetite hormones.
53.Which of the following message is conveyed by Meadows in paragraph.4?
A.When it’s stormy outside, we crave for junk food and a good night sleep.
B.When we feel under the weather, we should eat less and sleep more.
C.We should combine healthy eating with regular sleep together.
D.Bad eating and sleep deprivation contributes to each other.
54.Which of the following may, NOT be a consequence of sleep deprivation?
A.Irregular heartbeat. B.Failing memory.
C.Poor decision-making. D.Bad choices of lifestyle.
55.People lacking sleep are encouraged to ______.
A.sleep for as long as they want during the day B.watch one episode of their favorite TV series
C.prevent yourself from energy intake each night D.consume food rich in fiber and water
Many of us do not like the things we see around us. For example, the bad habits of some people, the rude manners and even the air pollution. If you do not want the things you see around you, don’t just watch and hope it will change. Only lazy people might say that is the way things have been working and that is the way they are going to continually work. In fact, things won’t change if you don’t do something to change them, so you should change yourselves first.
Maybe some people want to change the whole country? That is a far too enormous project. I think you can start by changing the small things around you.
Your habit should be the first thing to change. Change what you think about and change what you talk about. Change the things that get your attention before you plan to change a country.
Can you remember how difficult it was for you to break a habit that you desired to break some years ago? Do you remember the habits that you are still struggling to break? If so, then you must fall in with the view that things are not just going to change by your magic thought.
As far as I am concerned, the best way I have changed people around me is that I changed myself. People are watching you. Some of them do not expect you to change, so your change is going to be like a miracle to them and will influence them. When you change, they will change. Just change yourself and see how many people will tell you later that you were the one who changed them. That is one simple way young people can change their surroundings.
56.What is the best title for the passage? (No more than 10 words.)
57.Why should people change themselves first? (No more than 15 words.)
58.Please explain the underlined phrase “fall in with” in English. (No more than 5 words.)

But back home, British people were roaring, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”

He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”. “Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told,’ It won’t happen to you’.” 故选A。
根据第三段中““Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. (“美国人从小就相信他们可以成为美国的下一任总统,”他写道。)”可知,美国人从小被教育要积极乐观。故选C项。
50.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But comic differences can be a window into a culture. (但喜剧差异可以成为了解一种文化的窗口。)”可推知,作者认为喜剧差异在一定程度上展示了文化差异。故选B项。

根据文章第一段“The world is full of advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, but sometimes doing so just isn’t possible. If you are struggling with a sleep disorder, are a shift worker or have a baby who. wakes every few hours, being told how to sleep well can be annoying. For others, despite feeling exhausted all day, a fourth episode of your favorite TV series can seem more appealing than going to bed.(世界上有很多关于如何睡个好觉的建议,但有时这样做是不可能的。如果你正在与睡眠障碍作斗争,是一个轮班工人或有一个孩子。每隔几个小时醒来,被告知如何睡得好是很烦人的。对另一些人来说,尽管感觉一整天都很累,但看第四集你最喜欢的电视剧似乎比睡觉更有吸引力。)”以及第二段“How do you know if you are sleep-deprived?(你怎么知道自己是否睡眠不足呢?)”
根据文章第三段““Lack of good sleep can cause an imbalance in your appetite hormones,” says Martin Meadows, a registered dietitian: “The hormone ghrelin, which causes you to feel hungry, increases and the hormone leptin, which signals that you are full; decreases.”(“缺乏良好的睡眠会导致食欲激素失衡,”注册营养师Martin Meadows说:“使你感到饥饿的激素胃饥饿素增加,而表明你吃饱了的激素瘦素减少。”)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“As Meadows says: “It’s a perfect storm where we want to eat more and we don’t know when to stop, combined with the fact that when we are sleep-deprived our willpower is lower, arid it all becomes pretty tricky. Poor sleep, or sleep deprivation(匮乏), leads to an increased likelihood of poor lifestyle choices. Many of us get stuck in the habit of eating junk food, and the knock-on effect is that the junk food disturbs our sleep, because it’s higher in sugar; it’s more stimulating.”(正如Meadows所说:“这是一场完美的风暴,我们想吃得更多,却不知道什么时候该停下来,再加上睡眠不足时我们的意志力会降低,这一切都变得相当棘手。睡眠不足或睡眠匮乏会增加不良生活方式选择的可能性。我们中的许多人都养成了吃垃圾食品的习惯,其连锁反应是垃圾食品扰乱了我们的睡眠,因为它们的含糖量更高;这更刺激。”)”可知,Meadows认为睡眠不足会导致不良的饮食习惯,而不良饮食习惯又扰乱了我们的睡眠。故选D。
54.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“As Meadows says: “It’s a perfect storm where we want to eat more and we don’t know when to stop, combined with the fact that when we are sleep-deprived our willpower is lower, arid it all becomes pretty tricky. Poor sleep, or sleep deprivation(匮乏), leads to an increased likelihood of poor lifestyle choices. 55.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“And if you had a bad night’s sleep, Meadows recommends “making a conscious effort to choose foods such as wholegrains, beans, fruits and vegetables. Because they are packed with fiber and water, they will help you feel full while limiting your overall energy intake.”(如果你晚上睡得不好,Meadows建议“有意识地选择全麦、豆类、水果和蔬菜等食物。”因为它们富含纤维和水分,它们会让你有饱腹感,同时限制你的总能量摄入。)”可知,睡眠不足的人可以摄入富含纤维和水分的食物,因为这类食物会让人有饱腹感同时又能限制总能量摄入。故选D。
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
59.What habits should you change before changing a country? Please list three. (No more than 15 words)
60.Do you want to change the things around you? What will you do? (Please answer within 20 words.)
56.Change your surroundings by changing yourself. 57.Things won’t change unless you do something to change them. 58.To accept or admit. 59.What you think about; what you talk about; things getting your attention. 60.Yes. I will try to change myself first as the author has suggested.
通读全文,根据第一段中“In fact, things won’t change if you don’t do something to change them, so you should change yourselves first.(事实上,如果你不去改变,事情是不会改变的,所以你应该先改变自己。)” Change your surroundings by changing yourself.
根据第一段中“In fact, things won’t change if you don’t do something to change them, so you should change yourselves first.(事实上,如果你不做点什么来改变它们,事情就不会改变,所以你应该先改变自己。)” Things won’t change unless you do something to change them.
根据第四段中“ If so, then you must fall in with the view that things are not just going to change by your magic thought.(如果是这样,那么你必须fall in with这样的观点:事情不会仅仅因为你的神奇想法而改变。)” To accept or admit.
根据第二、三段中“Maybe some people want to change the whole country? That is a far too enormous project. I think you can start by changing the small things around you. Your habit should be the first thing to change. Change what you think about and change what you talk about. Change the things that get your attention before you plan to change a country.(也许有些人想改变整个国家?这是一个太庞大的工程。我认为你可以从改变身边的小事开始。你的习惯应该是首先要改变的。改变你的想法,改变你的言论。在你计划改变一个国家之前,先改变那些引起你关注的事情。)”可知,在改变一个国家之前,首先要改变你的想法,你的言论和你关注的事情。故答案为What you think about; what you talk about; things getting your attention.
根据第一段中“In fact, things won’t change if you don't do something to change them, so you should change yourselves first.(事实上,如果你不去改变,事情是不会改变的,所以你应该先改变自己。)” Yes. I will try to change myself first as the author has suggested.

Dear fellow students,

Dear fellow students,
With the popularity of takeaway, I’ve noticed many students around me choose it as a regular meal. However, it is an unhealthy diet.
First of all, takeaway contains high fat and calorie. Depending on it too much, we are likely to put on weight. Besides, without enough nutrition, our body will not function well in the long run. To solve this problem, we should bear a balanced diet in mind. In our daily life, we’d better take in more grains, eggs, milk, fruit and vegetables to satisfy our daily needs. What’s more, home-made food is a better choice for us, which is more nutritious and tasty. We can sense the family love as well while we enjoy it.
Let’s have less takeaway from now on and form a healthy eating habit.
