Special Treats for Tourists Who Act Sustainably in Copenhagen
Tourists in Copenhagen will receive free coffees, glasses of wine and boat trips if they join in environmentally friendly tasks during their holiday according to a new local plan. From July 15, tourists who pick up litter, use public transport or bicycle around the city will be given special treats as part of efforts to offset (抵消) their impact on the environment.
The CopenPay plan, designed to relieve the environmental “burden” of tourists flying to Copenhagen, is described as a “little step towards the green transition”. The plan will be trust-based, as the businesses taking part won’t ask for proof before handing over a free coffee or a meal for the tourists’ self-reported efforts.
“When you travel abroad - if you fly to other places or you travel by car - you pollute,” said Rikke Holm Petersen, head of the Copenhagen tourism board. “One of the things we can change is getting people to act more sustainably at the destination.”
More than 20 restaurants, cafes, boat trip organisers and other businesses have signed up for the plan and voluntarily provide special treats. The tourism board expects tourists from home and abroad, who make about 12 million overnight stays per year in the Danish capital, to take part in the activity.
Green tasks and their rewards in Copenhagen
◆ Organic meal if you pick litter in BaneGaarden
◆ Boat rental if you help fish rubbish out of the water
◆ Swim and coffee if you bike to the Kanalhuset canal
◆ Ice cream if you go to the National Museum by bike
◆ Vegetarian lunch if you volunteer in the urban garden
◆ Wine, beer or soft drink at Level Six rooftop bar if you arrive by bike or public transport
21.What is the purpose of the CopenPay plan?
A.To protect the environment. B.To promote business.
C.To control urban traffic. D.To attract more tourists.
22.How can tourists get special treats?
A.By signing up for a competition. B.By telling their finished green tasks.
C.By showing their flight tickets. D.By providing a written report.
23.What reward can you get if you bike to the National Museum?
A.A bunch of flowers. B.A cup of coffee.
C.Ice cream. D.The chance to volunteer.

At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damaged his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. A year later, sad with the lack of rehab (康复) resources available for people like himself in New Orleans, the former broadcast engineer decided that his hometown needed an adaptive gym to cater for those with injuries and disabilities (残疾). Based on the need, Raymond financed the establishment (建立) of Split Second Fitness in 2021, with specially designed workout equipment and therapy programs that allow clients to grow stronger without the aim (意图) of making money.
The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. “I knew I had to get back home and figure out how to do that,” says Raymond, who spent three years raising funds (资金) and learning how to run an organization.
Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living… “Anybody’s life can change in a split second like mine did,” explains Raymond. “What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope?’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow?’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says. “Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues.”
24.What do we know about Split Second Fitness?
A.It is open to everyone. B.It is made up of many gyms.
C.It is financed by TV programs. D.It is run on a non-profit (盈利) basis.
25.What inspired Raymond to set up Split Second Fitness?
A.A live broadcast. B.A rehab experience.
C.A request from a fitness center. D.A suggestion from a former workmate.
26.What can we learn about Split Second Fitness from paragraph 4?
A.Its goal and mission (使命). B.Its facilities (设备) and staff.
C.Its background and change. D.Its challenges and difficulties.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Life with a Disability: a Painful Process
B.Hope in action: a Road to Self-discovery
C.Gyms: Making You Healthier and Stronger
D.Instructors (教练): Helping you become energetic
C
For decades it’s been hoped that seawater could be desalinated (淡化) to resolve the problem of drinking water shortage. Yet desalination plants still provide only around one percent of the world’s drinking water. The progress goes slowly as desalination plants are expensive to build and use enormous quantities of energy to run. Energy accounts for one-third to more than half the cost of producing desalinated water.
In Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest producer of desalinated water, the process accounts for up to a fifth of the nation’s energy consumption. But all this may be changing. A 2020 study found that, globally, the average cost of desalinated water could more than halve if solar power and battery storage systems were used. Across the world, there are around 180 facilities currently under construction, or in their design phase, mostly in the Middle East and North Africa. New sources of renewable energy like solar power mean it’s getting cheaper to power energy-hungry desalination equipment in sunny and water-stressed areas.
Egypt and Morocco, for example, are building renewable-powered plants designed both to provide drinking water and to water crops. In South Australia, a self-cooling greenhouse design that uses wind to desalinate seawater for crops is part of a commercial project producing 15 percent of Australian-grown tomatoes. Scientists are also making major breakthroughs, such as new self-cleaning membrane (膜状物) technology, which improve the desalination process.
One start-up, Core Power, is developing nuclear-powered offshore plants. Another, Oneka, is employing wave power for desalination units. This wave of growth and innovation is set to continue. A global desalination equipment market valued at 17 billion dollars in 2023 is expected to grow to 32 billion dollars by 2030.
But serious challenges remain. Most facilities still use non-renewable fuels to power the plants, and the pouring of processed seawater into the sea poses a threat to sealife. These problems will have to be addressed as a thirsty world looks to the desalination industry to provide its fresh water.
28.What results in the slow progress of desalination?
A.High production costs. B.Environmental concerns.
C.Little demand for fresh water. D.Lack of official support.
29.What do the facts in paragraphs 3 and 4 imply concerning the desalination industry?
A.It promises a bright prospect. B.It’ll end water shortage soon.
C.It’s merely a temporary success. D.It faces huge investment risks.
30.In which of the following publications would this text be printed?
A.Motor Trend. B.Runner’s World.
C.Psychology Today. D.The Economist.
31.What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Why we depend on fresh water to live.
B.How to lessen negative effects of desalination.
C.What to do to store fresh water against droughts.
D.How desalination technologies boost water supply.
D
Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? If you were a scientist interested in these questions, wouldn’t you love to study identical twins?
Over the last 10 years, a team of scientists led by psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard Jr. has studied about 65 pairs of identical twins who were raised apart. The scientists bring each pair of twins to the University of Minnesota for a week of intensive testing. They record the twins’ height, weight, eye color, ear shape, and head length. Meanwhile, they give the twins IQ and personality tests.
Bouchard’s team has been startled by the similarities between twins raised apart. The twins often have surprisingly similar gestures and postures, for instance. And they have led remarkably similar lives. Adult identical twins also tend to have similar medical histories, developing the eye disease glaucoma at the same time, for example.
“The coincidences are not surprising,” some critics of the Minnesota study say. They argue that everyone’s life has so many details that a number of coincidences are bound to exist. What’s more, for every coincidence discovered by a pair of identical twins raised apart, the critics could point to a vast number of undiscovered differences.
According to Bouchard, they find that genes play a big part in shaping our personalities - helping to determine whether we respect tradition and like to follow rules or not. The team has reported that intelligence also seems to be influenced much more by genes than by environment. Despite being raised by different families, separated identical twins earned identical or nearly identical scores on adult intelligence tests.
Other scientists, however, disagree. “How can you study whether intelligence is inherited when there are so many different ways just to define intelligence?” The problem applies to other traits (特征), they say.
Bouchard himself makes the point that even the most closely matched twins are different from each other. So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too.
32.Why are scientists so interested in studying identical twins raised apart in different environments?
A.Because it can be studied with a week of intensive testing.
B.Because this group of twins have the most striking similarities.
C.Because it is a good way to measure the effects of nature and nurture.
D.Because there has already been a lot of research on identical twins raised together.
33.What do critics of the Minnesota study say about the similarities between twins raised apart?
A.They are merely coincidences.
B.They are overstated to some extent.
C.They are nothing compared with the differences.
D.They are too common to deserve any serious consideration.
34.Which of the following statements would Bouchard agree to?
A.Similarities go hand in hand with differences.
B.Nature has a notable influence over our lives.
C.Intelligence is something inherited rather than acquired.
D.Environment plays a bigger part in personal development.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Inherited Genes Favor Twins B.Environment Tells Apart Twins
C.Science Looks Twice at Twins D.Physical Traits Come to Twins

In the golden mist of late summer, Frank and John, two inseparable friends, set off on an adventure they had particularly planned for weeks: a camping trip by the river. The air was filled with excitement as they packed their backpacks with essentials—tents, cookers, and a map, though they were confident in their knowledge of the area, having explored its boundaries since childhood.
As the sun began its fall, casting long shadows across the green landscape, they arrived at their chosen spot—a quiet bend in the river, far from civilization’s noisiness. They set up camp, and the crackling of the campfire and the gentle lapping of water against the shore were their only companions. Under a starry sky, they shared stories and dreams, unaware that their comfortable escape was about to take a dangerous turn.
The following morning, as they ventured deeper into the woods to gather firewood, the sky, which had been clear and blue, turned frightening, with heavy clouds gathering. In the distance, a low, powerful, rolling thunder echoed (回响) through the valley, a warning they should have noticed. Not frightened, they continued, their laughter now was drowned out by the growing roar(咆哮) of the river.
It happened swiftly. A wall of water, caused by the storm, rushed down the river, catching them off guard. In a heartbeat, their return path was cut off, the once familiar place was transformed into a maze (迷宫) of rushing currents and mudslides. Panic rose within them, but Frank, always the calmer of the two, remembered a survival tip from his father: “When lost or in danger, stay put if possible, assess your resources, and think reasonably.”
With the river too dangerous to cross, they came back to higher ground, seeking shelter beneath a rocky overhang. As the rain pounded down, they gathered together, their spirits dampened but not defeated. John remembered another crucial lesson: using natural resources for survival. He suggested they start a fire using dry leaves and branches they had collected before the storm and they managed to light a small flame, providing warmth and a light of hope.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.

Dear Mike,
I’m so glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are interested in the coming-of-age ceremony held in our school last Sunday, I’m writing to share details with you.
The event took place from 8 to 11 am, which was to raise our awareness of entering adulthood and becoming responsible members of society. We first briefly looked back on our past, reflecting on what we had gained. Then we watched a documentary about great people who contributed to our mother land. Their deeds and spirits impressed me. I have determined to work hard to become a person like them and realize my social value.
Yours,
Li Hua
The new sun rise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage. They crafted fishing hooks from bent wires found among their scattered belongings, cleverly attaching them to flexible branches to catch fish in the running river. The day was also marked by tireless efforts to signal for help, arranging branches and rocks into massive arrows that pointed toward their location, hoping these markers would catch the eye of a passing aircraft. Frank, with his keen observation skills, noticed patterns in the helicopter search patterns, suggesting they move closer to the riverbank during flyovers, increasing their chances of being spotted.
The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared. The bright clothes they had hung between trees and the persistent smoke from their controlled fire served as a signal in the wilderness. As they were airlifted to safety, Frank and John looked at each other, their eyes reflecting a newfound appreciation for life, friendship, and the power of preparation and quick thinking in the face of disaster. The adventure was also a reminder that even in the most unexpected and dangerous circumstances, there is always a way out — if one remains calm, resourceful, and never loses sight of hope.

But she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her, she talked with me and introduced herself. I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbor, who had looked after my dad and his sisters when their mother died 30 years ago. My dad had often spoken of her.
But I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small act of kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.

【答案】28.A 29.A 30.D 31.B
根据第一段中“The progress goes slowly as desalination plants are expensive to build and use enormous quantities of energy to run. Energy accounts for one-third to more than half the cost of producing desalinated water. (由于海水淡化厂的建设成本高昂,运转需要消耗大量能源,所以进展缓慢。能源成本占生产淡化水成本的三分之一到一半以上)”可知,生产成本高导致海水淡化进展缓慢。故选A项。
根据第三段“Egypt and Morocco, for example, are building renewable-powered plants designed both to provide drinking water and to water crops. 根据第四段“One start-up, Core Power, is developing nuclear-powered offshore plants. Another, Oneka, is employing wave power for desalination units. This wave of growth and innovation is set to continue. A global desalination equipment market valued at 17 billion dollars in 2023 is expected to grow to 32 billion dollars by 2030. (一家名为Core Power的初创企业正在开发海上核电站。另一家名为Oneka的公司正在利用波浪能进行海水淡化。这波增长和创新浪潮将持续下去。2023年全球海水淡化设备市场规模为170亿美元,预计到2030年将增长到320亿美元)”可知,本段介绍核能和波浪能两种新兴技术,以及良好的市场预测,强调了海水淡化领域的创新趋势和市场增长。由此可知,海水淡化行业前景光明。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是全文第一句“For decades it’s been hoped that seawater could be desalinated (淡化) to resolve the problem of drinking water shortage. (几十年来,人们一直希望通过淡化海水来解决饮用水短缺的问题)”可知,文章围绕海水淡化展开,介绍了其现状,并指出通过利用可再生能源和新技术,海水淡化成本正在降低,市场增长迅速,但仍面临能源和环境挑战。因此,文章与自然资源、工业技术及经济发展相关,可能被刊登在《经济学人》这种涉及商业、金融和科技等的刊物上。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But serious challenges remain. Most facilities still use non-renewable fuels to power the plants, and the pouring of processed seawater into the sea poses a threat to sealife. These problems will have to be addressed as a thirsty world looks to the desalination industry to provide its fresh water. (但严峻的挑战依然存在。大多数设施仍然使用不可再生燃料为工厂提供动力,并且将处理过的海水倒入大海对海洋生物构成威胁。这些问题必须得到解决,因为缺水的世界正指望海水淡化工业提供淡水)”可知,此处指出海水淡化领域仍然面临严峻的能源和环境挑战。由此推知,接下来作者应该会探讨如何减少海水淡化的负面影响。故选B项。
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B 35.C
根据文章第一段“Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? If you were a scientist interested in these questions, wouldn’t you love to study identical twins?
根据第四段““The coincidences are not surprising,” some critics of the Minnesota study say. They argue that everyone’s life has so many details that a number of coincidences are bound to exist. What’s more, for every coincidence discovered by a pair of identical twins raised apart, the critics could point to a vast number of undiscovered differences. (“这些巧合并不令人惊讶,”明尼苏达研究的一些批评者说。他们认为,每个人的生活都有很多细节,因此必然存在一些巧合。更重要的是,对于一对分开抚养的同卵双胞胎所发现的每一个巧合,批评者都可以指出大量未被发现的差异)”可知,一些批评者认为这只是巧合。故选A。
根据最后一段“Bouchard himself makes the point that even the most closely matched twins are different from each other. So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too. (布沙尔自己也指出,即使是最匹配的双胞胎也会彼此不同。因此,尽管基因可能对我们的生活有很大的影响,但它们并不是唯一的影响。我们的日常经历也有助于塑造我们)”可推断布沙尔会同意自然对我们的生活有显著的影响。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? (为什么有些人擅长数学或写作,而有些人擅长艺术或篮球?是什么导致了这些差异?它们在很大程度上是由我们从父母那里继承的基因(天性)决定的吗?社会环境(教养)对其有多大影响?)”及最后一段“So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
