He is checking the area on a cold, dark night although most people have left work to go home and this part of the city is quiet.
2. Why did the man and his friend separate twenty years ago?
The man dined with his friend Jimmy at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s and he was to start for the West to make his fortune but Jimmy would like to stay in New York.

3. What agreement did they make at that time?
They agreed that they would meet there again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what their conditions might be or from what distance they might have to go.

Surprise ending
13
1. Did Jimmy come to meet his friend?
When the policeman went away, Jimmy came back and told the man that he was Jimmy Wells. He saw the scar on Bob’s face and knew he was the person who was wanted in Chicago. They just talked a little and then they left separately.
2. What has Jimmy experienced over the past twenty years?
He may continue to be in New York and have a steady job.
3. What might happen between the policeman and the man?
After seeing the scar on the man’s face, the policeman was confident that the man was the criminal of whom the policeman was in chase. Immediately, he grasped the man’s arms and fought with him. Unfortunately, the man ran away and escaped again. Of course, he didn’t see his friend Jimmy at all.
Now read the note from the original ending and find out what exactly happened.
Bob, I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your scar I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago. Somehow I couldn’t do it myself, so I went around and got a plain clothes man to do this job.
JIMMY

Jimmy was the policeman. He turned up as they agreed twenty years earlier, but he decided to fulfil his duty and have Bob arrested.
