For example, you may ask "Where are the restrooms?" or "Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?" These are similar requests for directions. Both are correct, but the first one sounds less polite. That is because it is a very direct question. It is not enough to just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite when (74) ① for help. [2] Good speakers change the way they speak in different situations to become more polite. The expressions they use might depend on whom they are speaking to or how well they know each other. You know your classmates well, (74) ② it is all right to ask them direct questions to. However, if you say to your teacher,"When is the school trip?", this might sound impolite. But if you say "Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know when the school trip is?", this will sound much more polite. [3] Usually polite questions are longer. They include expressions such as "Could you please..?" or "May I ask...?" It sounds more polite to say, "Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?" than "Peter, tell me your e-mail address." (75) Sometimes what we need to do is spending time leading into a request. For example, we might first say to a stranger,"Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me" or "I'm sorry to trouble you, but ..." before asking for help. [4] It might seem more difficult to speak politely than directly. However, learning (74)③ to use the right language in different situations is important. This will help you communicate better with other people. 71. A direct question sounds more polite, doesn't it? (No more than 3 words.) 72. How do good speakers become more polite? (No more than 9 words.) 73. What are usually longer? (No more than 2 words.) 74. Fill in each blank with one proper word. ① ② ③ 75.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese. 75. Do you think we should speak politely? Why? 四、综合填空 beginning, politer, in, underground, differently, if, pardon, correct, used, sentence There are three kinds of questions in English:direct, indirect, and question tags. People use these types of questions 1. according to different situations. But all in all, each type can be 2. to ask polite questions. Direct questions are those questions like"Where is the 3. station?" Of course, asking direct questions is certainly right, but normally, we make these questions 4. to get help. We usually do it by adding " excuse me" or "5. me" to our questions. It's also common to use "could" or "would" 6. some situations. For example, we can say "Excuse me, could you please help me?" Remember that "please" should not appear at the of 7. the question. Most people use indirect questions. An indirect question begins with a phrase (I wonder, Do you think, Would you mind, etc. ). For example, "I wonder 8. you know what time it is." Question tags are used to check information that we think is 9. . We use them to ask for more information with different intonations (语调).
