Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You've located the country's capital and one of Europe's most
beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites.
resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be
Madrid's most beautiful building
Inside the Royal Palace 2.8oo rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks
Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Art
The Internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in
1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe's best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for

flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike
Food

Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m. it's

It's never too late to earn your college degree. Just ask 94-year-old Hazel Soares
The woman was one of about 5oo students to pick up diplomas (学位 证书) at Mills College."It's taken me
quite a long time because I've had a busy life," said Soares."I'm finally achieving it, and it makes me feel really
good."
Soares, who has six children and 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is believed to be the world's
second oldest person to graduate from college. Born in Richmond, Calif. in 1915, Soares said she had wanted to
attend college right after she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1932, but that was during the Great
Depression."Unless you had some help, it would have been impossible to go to college." Soares said. "However I
never lost the desire to go."
Soares married twice, raised six children and worked as a nurse before she retired. After retiring, she decided
to return to try to achieve her dream of earning a college education
She spent six years taking courses before earning her associate's degree when she was 85. Then she enrolled at
Mills College in 2007
"We are really amazed and very proud of my mom." said Regina Hungerford, Soares' youngest child."The
biggest thing that we can all learn is that we're never too old to do something." Soares doesn't plan to relax now
that she finally has her degree. The art history major hopes to work as a guide at a museum
Soares said she doesn't know the source of her longevity(长寿). No one in her family has lived as long as she
has -but she believes it has something to do with eating lots of fresh vegetables
She hopes others realize that it's never too late to get a college education. "There's no reason why you could
not go back,"Soares said."Some people say it's too late or that there is much work. They may not realize that
once you try it, it's exciting to go to school."

Mounting evidence suggests that longtime sitting - a main part of modern-day life - is risky to your health
even if you exercise regularly. Based on these findings, doctors advise all adults to sit less and move more. But how
often do we need to get up from our chairs? And for how long?
Few studies have compared multiple options to come up with the answer most office workers want: What is
the least amount of activity needed to counteract the health effects of a workday filled with sitting?
Now a study by Columbia University exercise physiologists has an answer. Unlike other studies that test one
or two activity options, the study tested five different exercise "snacks". or short bursts of activity after a period of
time's sitting: one minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting, one minute after 60 minutes. five minutes
every 30, five minutes every 60 and no walking
The proper amount of movement, the researchers found, was five minutes of walking every 30 minutes. This
was the only amount that greatly lowered both blood sugar and blood pressure. In addition, this walking routine had
an impressive effect on how the participants responded to large meals, reducing blood sugar spikes (峰值) by 58%
compared with sitting all day. Taking a walking break every 30 minutes for one minute also provided modest
benefits for blood sugar levels throughout the day, while walking every 60 minutes, either for one minute or five
minutes. provided no benefit
What we know now is that for best health, you need to move regularly at work, in addition to a daily exercise
routine. While that may sound impractical, the findings show that even small amounts of walking spread through
the work day can greatly lower your risk of heart disease and other chronic (慢性的) illnesses
28. What does the study by Columbia University focus on?
A. What adults should do to keep exercising regularly.
B. When and where we need to sit less and move more
C. Why longtime sitting every day is risky to our health
D. How often and how long we need to walk from our chairs
29. What does the underlined word "counteract" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
B. Strengthen.
C.Add.
A.Reduce.
D.Benefit.
30. Which walking pattern is the MOsT useful for health according to the text?
A. One minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting
B. Five minutes of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting
C. One minute of walking after every 60 minutes of sitting
D. Five minutes of walking after every 60 minutes of sitting
31. What does the last paragraph show?
A. The risks of heart disease and other illnesses.
B. The daily exercise routine suitable for everyone.
C. The suggestions on the health of the office staff
D. The ways of moving regularly at work every day.

In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the
taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium levels in some of the country's most popular dishes.
The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater's wristband. The
device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness.
says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated with the food and
drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. The team plan to improve the first design and hope to make the
chopsticks available to consumers next year.
The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due
to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce. The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt
a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization. The health ministry has proposed
reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women
The chopsticks use "very weak electricity - not enough to affect the human body - to adjust the function of
ions such as sodium chloride and sodium glutamate to change the perception of taste by making food seem to taste
stronger or weaker". Kirin said in a statement
Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device
enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. High salt intake can contribute to high blood
pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. "To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount
of salt we take," said Kirin researcher Ai Sato."If we try to avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would
need to suffer the pain of cutting our favourite food from our diet, or suffer eating food with very little taste."
Miyashita's lab has also invented a lickable TV screen that imitates the flavours of various foods
32. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How the chopsticks work.
B. What the team plans to do
C. What the device is designed for
D. How a sense of saltiness is created
33. What does the underlined word "collaborated" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
C. Cooperated
A. Competed.
B. Employed.
D. Fought.
34. What is a direct result of the chopsticks?
A. Food can have stronger or weaker flavours
B. Low-sodium food tastes saltier than it actually is.
C. The health ministry has suggested reducing salt intake
D. Taking less salt means eating less food with very little taste
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Japan conducts clinical tests on low-sodium diets
B. Japanese high-tech salty chopsticks gain popularity
C. Japan invents electronic chopsticks making food taste salty
D. Japanese researchers reduce sodium levels in popular dishes
