第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 50 分)

阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的 A、B、C和 D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
Humans are not always great at self- moderation, especially when things seem both plentiful
and tasty. Read on to discover a few of the animals which we have lost for our behaviors.
Dodo
They were once abundant on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Larger than turkeys,
dodos weighed about 23 kg (about 50 pounds) and had blue- gray plumage and a large head.
Portuguese sailors discovered them around 1507. These and subsequent sailors quickly killed the
dodo population as an easy source of fresh meat for their voyages. The later introduction of
monkeys, pigs, and rats to the island proved disastrous to the birds as the mammals fed on their
eggs. The last dodo was killed in 1681. Sadly, very few scientific descriptions or museum
specimens (样本) exist.
Steller’s Sea Cow
Discovered in 1741, Steller’s sea cows once inhabited the near- shore areas of the Komandor
Islands in the Bering Sea. Much larger than present- day manatees and dugongs, Steller’s sea cows
reached a length of 9-10 meters and weighed around 10 tons. They floated at the surface of the
coastal waters but unfortunately had little ability to sink. This made them easy targets for Russian

seal hunter. Killing was often wasteful and the species was exterminated (灭绝) by 1768, less than
30 years after it was first discovered. No preserved specimens exist today.
Passenger Pigeon
The passenger pigeon was hunted to extinction in the early 1900s. Billions of these birds
once inhabited eastern North America. As American settlers pressed westward, passenger pigeons
were killed by the millions yearly for their meat and shipped by railway carloads for sale in city
markets. Hunters often destroyed their nesting grounds and entire colonies in a single breeding
season. From 1870 the decline of the species became dramatic. The last known passenger pigeon,
named Martha, died on Sept.1,1914 in the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio.
21.Which of the following statements is true about dodos?
A.They were believed to have a short history with less than 170 years.

D.They were bigger than turkeys and heavier than Steller’s sea cows.
22.Why were Steller’s sea cows effortlessly hunted?
A.Because they were large enough to be spotted by hunters.
B.Because they were unable to dive themselves in the water.
C.Because they were regarded as prizes by Russian sailors.
D.Because they floated at the water surface independently.
23.What do the three animals have in common?
A.Human factors speeded up their extermination.
B.They all disappeared before the 19th century.
C.No preserved specimens of them exist today.
D.Their habitats were all in the ocean.

Few can challenge Quan Hongchan on the diving platform. At just 17, she has become
China’s diving star, excelling with skills far beyond her age.
With five world championships and three Olympic gold medals, including her stunning
performance in Paris, Quan is a standout even among China’s dominant diving team, which
captured nearly all the gold medals in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
Her diving technique is so impressive that the Chinese term “shui hua xiao shi shu,” meaning
“water splash disappearance technique,” was created to describe her near splashless dives.
Born in a small village in Guangdong, Quan’s family faced financial struggles, especially
after her mother’s accident. She was discovered in 2014 by coach Chen Huaming, who recognized
her jumping ability. By the age of 10, she joined Zhanjiang Sports School, and by 11, she had
made it to the Guangdong provincial team.
Quan admitted she wasn’t strong in academics but found confidence in diving. Her coach, He
Weiyi, praised her for working harder than others and constantly striving for perfection.
Quan quickly rose to prominence, winning gold at the Guangdong Junior Championships in
2018 and 2019. By 2020, she was securing national titles and beating world champions. At just 14,
she won Olympic gold in Tokyo, setting a new Olympic record.
Despite her success, Quan remains humble. After her Olympic victory, she celebrated by
eating “Latiao”, her favorite snack, and expressed her dream of owning a supermarket. She’s also
a fan of Winter Olympian Eileen Gu, showing her youthful spirit despite her elite status in the

The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act calls for 100% of cars produced to be electric vehicles by
2035. But electric vehicles require a chemical element, copper, three to five times more than their
gasoline-powered counterparts, not to mention the copper required for upgrades to the electric
grid(电网).
Adam Simon, professor of earth and environmental studies at the University of Michigan,
examined 120 years of global data from mining companies and calculated how much copper the
US electricity infrastructure(基础设施) and the US vehicles would need to upgrade to renewable
energy, finding that the copper needs would exceed what copper mines can produce at the current
rate. The shortfall is in part because of the lengthy permitting process for mining companies,
which averages around 20 years.
To electrify the global vehicle fleet, six new large mines must be operational annually over
the next decade, with 40% of new production used to grid upgrades.
“I’ve got solar panels, batteries, and an electric vehicle,” Simon says. “I’m fully on board
with the energy transition. However, it needs to be done in a way that’s achievable.”
Instead of completely electrifying the US vehicles, the researchers suggest focusing on
producing hybrid vehicles. A Toyota Prius, for example, actually has a slightly better impact on
climate than a Tesla. Rather than produce 100 million battery electric vehicles globally each year,
would it be more practical to focus on building 20 million hybrid ones?
“Renewable energy technologies, clean water, wastewater, electricity—it cannot exist
without copper. So we then end up with tension between how much copper we need to build
高三英语 第 5 页,共 9 页
infrastructure in less developed countries and how much copper we need for the energy transition,”
Simon says.
The study highlights that significant progress can be made to reduce emissions in the United
States. However, the current emphasis on renewable energy technology producing exceeds copper
production capabilities. A mindset shift among environmentalists and policymakers towards
mining is crucial to bridge this gap and ensure a sustainable energy transition.
28.What is a challenge to promote The Inflation Reduction Act?
A.High cost of grid upgrades. B.Limited availability of copper.
C.Great shortage of electric cars. D.Lack of charging infrastructure.
29.How does Simon feel about fully electrifying vehicles in the coming decade?
A.Confident. B.Indifferent. C.Certain. D.Skeptical.
30.Why is Toyota Prius mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.To advocate the use of hybrid vehicles.
B.To highlight the popularity of Toyota cars.
C.To criticize the environmental impact of Tesla.
D.To prove Toyota Prius is better than other vehicles.
31.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A solution to copper shortages. B.A bottleneck in energy transition.
C.An advantage of electric vehicles. D.An appeal on energy conservation.

That artificial food dyes are unhealthy is not news. Some of the most common additives used
to give color to everything are known to affect some children’s ability to learn. But regulatory (管
理的) agencies around the world don’t necessarily agree. That may soon change, thanks in part to
increasing consumer pressure. In addition, a report prepared by the state of California’s Office of
Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) concluded that synthetic food dyes “cause or
worsen neurobehavioral problems in some children”.
In response to the report, California is now thinking about requiring warning labels on food
products containing the seven most commonly used synthetic dyes. Among them are Red 40,
Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, which account for more than 90% of food dye. Restaurants in California
would also have to identify menu items containing the additives.
“The science is clear,” says Lisa Lefferts, an environmental health consultant. “These
synthetic dyes harm children and are completely unnecessary.”
What makes the OEHHA report a game changer is that a regulatory agency is on the same
page as scientists and advocacy (拥护) groups. “That’s largely because of the quality of the report,”
says Lefferts, one of 10 original signatories to the petition.
Synthetic dyes are used in foods for one reason: to make products look prettier. Someone
likens the practice to“putting cosmetics on food”. Bright colors and fun shapes make candies and
cereals appealing, especially to kids.
As more research has emerged, consumer pressure has led companies to reformulate products.
In 2016, the company began using turmeric, annatto and paprika instead of Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.
Around the same time, Chipotle, NestlUSA and a number of other restaurants and
manufacturers announced plans to cut back on or stop using synthetic dyes.
32.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.All the regulatory agencies is against the food dyes.
高三英语 第 6 页,共 9 页
B.The use of artificial food dyes are obviously increasing.
C.Consumers’ pressure reduces the use of artificial food dyes.
D.The agencies don’t know why food dyes are still a problem.
33.Why does OEHHA have power to change the use of artificial food dyes?
A.OEHHA is an organization determining the ingredients in food.
B.OEHHA prepared an excellent report to state the use of food dyes.
C.The government in California support OEHHA to change this situation.
D.The excellent report put scientist and advocacy groups stand with OEHHA.
34.Which word can replace the underlined word “reformulate”?
A.Restructure. B.Register. C.Reflect. D.Rebuild.
35.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Some scientists don’t agree on using food dyes.
B.The use of artificial food dyes may soon change.
C.OEHA prepared a report to avoid using food dyes.
D.OEHHA cleared the reason why food dyes are used.

Confidence is the capacity to convey your thoughts, emotions, and needs with both directness
and respect. Being confident can help you communicate more effectively, build healthier
relationships, and achieve your objectives. 36 .
·Practice self-awareness.
Developing confidence starts with self- awareness. 37 Identify situations where you tend
to react passively or aggressively and try to understand why. Reflect on past interactions and think
about how you could have approached them more confidently. This process of self- reflection and
awareness will allow you to consciously make confident choices in the future, gradually building a
more confident and effective communication style.
·Speak calmly and clearly.
The way you speak greatly affects how your message is received. Maintaining a calm and
clear tone of voice conveys confidence and helps prevent misunderstandings. 38 And practice
speaking in a steady, even tone, especially in stressful situations. This not only helps you stay calm
but also ensures that your message is understood clearly.
39 .
A powerful way to communicate confidently is to use statements that focus on your feelings
and experiences without blaming others. For example, instead of saying, “You never listen to me,”
you can say, “I feel unheard when my opinions are refused.” This approach personalizes your
feelings and clearly states that you are expressing your own idea, which can reduce defensiveness
and promote a more constructive dialogue.
·Take others into consideration.
It is necessary to express your own needs in a dialogue. 40 First of all, people are more
likely to listen to you and take your idea seriously if they feel valued and understood. Additionally,
showing empathy (共鸣) can reduce the likelihood of defensive reactions. Mutual respect leads to
more productive interactions overall, as both parties feel heard and appreciated.
A.Use “I” statements.

One day in first grade, I was walking home when a black dog suddenly ran out from a yard n
ear the corner of our street. I stopped and saw a side of dogs I’d never experienced. Staring at me,
he began to circle me. Scared, I tried to walk away. The moment my back was turned, he seized m
y ankle. His teeth locked into my flesh. I screamed and kicked until he let go. I ran home, with the
dog chasing me until he gave up near my house.
I ran into the house, crying so hard that my mother couldn’t understand what had happened.
Once my wounds were cleaned and bandaged (包扎), I told her, “A dog bit me, Mommy. It hurt.”
I felt more betrayed than scared—— one of the animals I loved had hurt me for no reason. “I’ll ne
ver trust another dog again,” I said.
That night, my nightmares grew worse. My fear of dogs grew so intense that I refused to visit
my grandfather’s farm, where he had a dog I used to love. I became so terrified that my mom had

to walk me past the house where the dog lived every day, and I struggled to focus at school. My te

“Gail, you need to overcome this fear,” my mom said as we walked home. “Remember my fri
end Emma? She has a black Lab named Chips, and she’s invited us to meet him.”
Dread filled me. “No, Mommy, please! I hate dogs. They want to hurt me!”
“Not Chips,” she said, smiling. “I promise it won’t happen.”
Unwillingly, we went to Emma’s house. My heart raced as she opened the door, revealing Chi
