A woman planning “Harry Potter night” at a supper club she runs at home has been forced to change their name after a warning from film studio Warner Bros
The evenings in Kiburn, north London, were due to include food and other elements from the Harry Potter books. However, Warner Bros, maker of the Harry Potter films, wrote to the club’s organizer “Ms Marmite Lover” warning that the parties would infringe (侵犯) its rights.
The club will now hold two “Genetic Wizard nights” for Halloween. On her blog, Ms Marmite Lover explains that she researched and developed her menu with her Harry Potter-obsessed teenage daughter and a food writer.
Guests would have to enter the venue, called the Underground Restaurant, through “Diagon Alley” and by giving a password-while a “Sorting Hat” would decide the seating plan.
After Warner Bros learned about the ticketed (被加标签) event, it wrote to Ms Marmite Lover saying: “While we are delighted that you are such a fan of the Harry Potter series, unfortunately your proposed use of the Harry Potter Properties without our permission would amount to an infringement of Warner’s rights.”
The letter added: “Warner does not, of course, object to you holding a Genetic Wizard Halloween night at the Underground Restaurant.”
Ms Marmite Lover suggested in her blog: “JK Rowling herself, having at one time been a struggling single parent, and having donated to the National Council for one Patent Families, would probably approve of a single mother being entrepreneurial (企业家的) and creative”.
The Underground Restaurant usually charges diners about 20-30 each, except alcohol. Warner Bros says it has guidelines to help Harry Potter fans run non-profit and charitable events true to the spirit of the stories.
The vast majority of non-commercial events are able to go ahead with the studio’s support, it says.

If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us--especially young people--need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail(足迹)we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. And the difference: is vital. A celebrity is all about fame(名望)--temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character--qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy--which shoes, which cell phone--not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities--their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.
How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight(困苦)of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500,000--enough to build over 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude(未加提炼的)oil. Her project has grown to include18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
46. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C. To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
D. To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
47. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Heroes make the world go round.
B. Heroes must believe in themselves.
C. Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D. Heroes promote cooperation between people.
48. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Heroes and celebrities are both valued today.
B. Society doesn’t support the development of heroes.
C. The media turn ordinary celebrities into real heroes.
D. Young people don’t have the belief in their own strength.
49. How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?
A. By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
B. By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. More heroes are needed in the world.
B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.
C. Adults should become role models for young people.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.
Near the small own of Grottoes, Virginia, a narrow dirt road goes from the house of Stephen Curry’s grandfather to the woods nearby. A far cry from the bright lights and shiny courts of the National Basketball Association (NBA), it was along this road that Stephen’s grandfather built a simple basket by attaching a piece of plastic to a telephone pole.
Like his fathers, basketball star Dell Curry, Stephen spent many childhood hours playing on this muddy basketball court. He probably didn’t realise it at the time, but it was where he learnt to be creative and flexible as a player. You see, with every shot, the weak plastic backboard gave way. The bumps and rocks that lined the road under the basket caused the ball to bounce in all directions. Knowing where the ball would go wasn’t easy. He had to adjust his own playing style as a result. Shooting with great accuracy was another thing he learnt. Only shots perfectly aimed at its centre went into the heavy, thick basket. In this way, practising day in and day out helped Stephen sharpen his skills.
Despite his father’s successful career, Stephen was thought by many people, including his high school teammates and coaches, to be too short, too thin and too weak to follow in his father’s footsteps. But Stephen carried on. Playing basketball was his dream. He would not give up. He finally end up playing college ball at a small, little-known school, Davidson College, not too far from where he lived. His creativity and perseverance made him Davidson’s star player.
Selected for the NBA in 2009, Stephen joined the Golden State Warriors. He performed beyond everyone’s expectations with his accurate shooting and continuous efforts. In 2015, Stephen won his first NBA championship, and he led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975.
After receiving the Most Valuable Player award for two years in a row, Stephen explained his philosophy, “I never really set out to change the game. What I wanted to do was just be myself..I know it inspires a lot of the next generation, a lot of people who love the game of basketball to value the skill of it, value the fact that you can work every single day to get better. You’ve got to be able to put in the time and the work. That’s how I got here. That’s how I continue to get better every single day.” Inspiring others to believe in themselves, Stephen Curry is living proof that what other people think of you does not have to influence what you become. Through self-belief, hard work, perseverance and some help from an old hoop, he has shown that anything is possible.

A woman planning “Harry Potter night” at a supper club she runs at home has been forced to change their name after a warning from film studio Warner Bros

The club will now hold two “Genetic Wizard nights” for Halloween. On her blog, Ms Marmite Lover explains that she researched and developed her menu with her Harry Potter-obsessed teenage daughter and a food writer.

根据文章第二段第四句“Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. (我们现代社会对名人和英雄之间的区别非常困惑)”,可知,作者说出我们对“名人和英雄的区别”很困惑,所以接下来讲到了“A celebrity is all about fame(名望)--temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character--qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action. (名人的全部是名望——暂时的、表面上的名声,通常是为了容易看到的品质:漂亮的脸庞,一个伟大的舞蹈动作。相比之下,英雄是关于品格的——表面下的品质,这种品质在他们采取行动之前是看不见的)”,这是对这种区别的阐述,所以整段文章其实就在讨论名人和英雄之间的区别。故选B项。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail. (英雄让我们的世界团结在一起,他们无私的奉献,帮助别人,教育孩子,保护环境。他们不要名誉,或者荣耀。他们只是想帮忙。在很多方面,这些无名英雄引领着我们所有人航行)”可知,英雄在这个世界上发挥着积极着作用,推动着世界积极的转动。故选A项。
根据文章第四段中句子“What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities--their own power to make a positive difference in the world. (在这里面迷失了什么? 年轻人对自己的英雄潜质的认识——他们自己对世界产生积极影响的能力)”可知,年轻人在自我能力上产生了迷失,他们对自己改变世界的力量没有信心。故选D项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段中句子“How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference. (我们如何帮助年轻人相信自己的力量?最好的方法就是分享其他年轻人做出有影响事情的例子)”可知,作者想用分享年轻人用自己的力量做出有影响的事的例子,来论证自己的观点。接下来两段分别列举Ryan和Barbara两位年轻人的事例,来说明年轻人具有成为英雄的潜力。再根据最后一段“The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great. (这样的例子还有很多。这些只是一些年轻人的例子,他们发现自己可以依靠自己的力量做一些伟大的事情。)”可知,作者就是用举例的方式来进一步阐述自己观点。故选C项。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段最后一句“While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential. (虽然大多数人都明白前两个愿望的重要性,但第三个愿望却让一些人疑惑,为什么年轻人对自己力量的信念如此重要) ”和最后一段最后一句“These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great. (这些只是年轻人的几个例子,他们已经发现他们可以依靠自己的力量去做一些伟大的事情) ”可知,作者开头以 “相信自己的力量”点题,结合第4题分析,段中例举了几个通过自己的力量做出改变的例子,结尾又以“自己的力量”与首段呼应,可知,整篇文章讲的是年轻人应该相信自己有能力做出有影响力有意义的事。故选D项。
