It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good’ at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation. Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t? To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines (学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation(背诵)of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox (非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brooks’ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science. 42.Why does Brook use a story to introduce scientific theories?( no more than 15words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 42.Because he tries to make his points through the story or keep reader’s attention. Or: To make his points and keep reader’s attention. 根据第三段“Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention.(他没有介绍科学理论,而是告诉了一个故事,在这个故事中,他试图表达自己的观点,也许是为了吸引读者的注意力。)” Because he tries to make his points through the story or keep reader’s attention./Or: To make his points and keep reader’s attention. 2. 设问形式: ① What’s the main idea of the passage / Paragraph ...? ② What’s the passage mainly about? ③ What’s the best title for the passage? What .../ Why ... How .../ How to...? Science has a lot of uses. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science. 41.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】41.The purpose of writing The Social Animal. Or: The main topics of the book. Or: The weighty tops in “The Social Animal”, written by Brooks. 根据第二段“Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?(布鲁克斯因几本书而出名。然而,他的最新著作《社会动物》比他早期的书更具野心和严肃性。这是一种处理一系列重大话题的尝试。这本书聚焦于重大问题:科学揭示了人性的哪些方面?性格的来源是什么?为什么有些人快乐成功,而另一些人则不然?)”可知,这本书探讨一些大问题,如:科学揭露什么人性;为何有人会成功?所以第二段大意为介绍该书的主题。故填The purpose of writing The Social Animal./Or: The main topics of the book./Or: The weighty tops in “The Social Animal”, written by Brooks. 2. 设问形式: ① What’s the purpose of the text? ② For what purpose does the author mention ... in Paragraph ...? ③ What does the author really mean by saying ...? ④ What kind of attitude does the author have towards ...? ⑤ What does ... imply? ⑥ What can we learn from the text? After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, “Drink your juice.” Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom “Why doesn’t Dad love me?” Mom frowned (皱眉). “Who said he doesn’t love you?!” “Well, he never tells me.” I complained. “He never tells me either,” she said, smiling. “But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That’s how your father tells us he loves us.” I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap metal (收破烂金属) business, and after school I often hung around while he worked. The machine that he used looked like a giant pair of scissors with blades (刃) thicker than my father’s body. If he didn’t feel those terrifying blades just right, he risked serious injury. “Why don’t you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment (搽剂). “Why don’t you hire a cook?” Dad asked, giving her one of his rare smiles. Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over, hugged him and said, “I love you, Dad.” From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave hugs to him. 62.Why did the author complain to his mother about his father?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 64.What conclusion can we draw about the author’s father from the underlined sentence in the second but last paragraph?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 62.Because his father never expressed love to him verbally. 64.The author’s father is hardworking and kind of humourous. 根据第一段中“In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom “Why doesn’t Dad love me?” Mom frowned (皱眉). “Who said he doesn’t love you?!” “Well, he never tells me.” I complained.(事实上,我记得,当我还是个孩子的时候,我问过妈妈:“为什么爸爸不爱我?”妈妈皱起眉头。“谁说他不爱你了?”“嗯,他从来没告诉过我。”我抱怨道)”可推知,作者向母亲抱怨父亲是因为父亲从未用语言表达对作者的爱。故答案为Because his father never expressed love to him verbally. 64. 根据第二段中““Why don’t you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment (搽剂). “Why don’t you hire a cook?” The author’s father is hardworking and kind of humourous. 2.设问形式: ① What’s the meaning of the underlined word / phrase / part in the ... paragraph? ② What does the underlined part in the ... paragraph mean? 常用的回答形式有: ① To show / inform us that ..., ② To give us useful tips / advice / suggestions on how to ...; ③ To encourage / persuade us to ... When Simon Cane was in the second grade, he began learning about all the ways humans have an impact on the environment and really took those classroom lessons to heart in a way that set him apart from his schoolmates at his elementary school, P. S. 81, in the Bronx. “He told me we drove too much and made too much pollution,” his dad, Jonathan Cane, told Runner’s World. So Simon convinced his parents to start hanging their clothes to dry, taking the stairs instead of elevators, and other “green” measures. “For much of kindergarten and the first grade I rode my bike to Simon’s school with him on the back,” Jonathan said. “We had a lot of fun being outdoors. We’d stop to give our dog treats and generally enjoyed it.” As Simon got bigger, though, it wasn’t practical for him to ride on his father’s back, but it also didn’t make sense to ride together — both because of safety concerns and because there was no place to put away Simon’s bike. So, most of the time they drove the 1.5 miles to school. But in 2019, when Simon was going into the third grade, the 8-year-old came up with a new way to help the planet: running the 1.5 miles to P. S. 81. And Jonathan promised his son he’d join him for as long as he wanted. “We did a test run one day in August, and decided to give it a go. To be honest, I thought he’d blink after it got really cold or rainy, but he never did,” Jonathan said. He recalled one day when the weather was particularly bad. “It’s really raining out there today,” he told Simon. “And Simon said, ‘Well then we’re going to get wet!’ He took pride in toughing it out, and it became a really fun family routine.” Since the start, Simon has run with his dad and their black dog, Lola, and has even inspired his mom, Nicole Sin Quee, to join in. They soon became known as “the family that runs to school”. 53.How do you understand the underlined part in the fourth paragraph? (no more than 15words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】53.I thought he would give up when the weather was bad. 根据画线句的下文“He recalled one day when the weather was particularly bad. “It’s really raining out there today,” he told Simon. “And Simon said, ‘Well then we’re going to get wet!’ He took pride in toughing it out, and it became a really fun family routine.” (他回忆起有一天天气特别糟糕。“今天外面真的下着雨,”他告诉Simon。“Simon说,‘好吧,那我们就要被淋湿了!’他很自豪能坚持下来,这成为了一项非常有趣的家庭惯例。”)”可知,Simon的爸爸Jonathan讲述了有一天虽然天气很糟糕,但是Simon没有放弃,依然坚持跑步上学的事情。由此可知,画线句指的是“我以为天气变坏时他会放弃”。故答案为:I thought he would give up when the weather was bad. Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown. Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says. Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions. Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says. 1.What is Ms. Young known as?(no more than 5 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 2.Why did Ms. Young want to record her parents’ recipes?(no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 3.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?(no more than 2 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 4.What has Ms. Young done to help Chinatown restaurants? Please give an example. (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 5.How does Ms. Young inspire you in her efforts to preserve Chinese Culinary traditions? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 1.An award-winning cookbook author. 2.To give her family and the next generation a great gift. 3.Personal experiences 4.Raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and delivered them to those in need. 5.Her work inspires me to learn more about Chinese cooking and to share it with others. 【导语】本文是一篇人物传记。文章主要讲述了Grace Young的故事,她从小在唐人街看着父亲购买食材烹饪中国美食,后来成为一名烹饪书作家。她通过自己的努力和影响力,让更多人了解和欣赏中国烹饪文化。 1.考查细节理解。根据文章第一段“As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.(作为一名屡获殊荣的烹饪书作者,现年66岁的杨女士几十年来一直在纽约的唐人街以同样的方式购物。)”可知,杨女士是一名屡获殊荣的烹饪书作者。故答案为An award-winning cookbook author。 2.考查细节理解。根据文章第二段““I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.(“我知道如果我把父母所有的食谱都记录下来,这将是我送给家人和下一代的一份很棒的礼物。”她说。)”可知,她认为把所有的食谱记下来,可以作为给家人和下一代的一份很棒的礼物。故答案为To give her family and the next generation a great gift。 3.词义猜测题。根据划线单词下文“Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. (谈论食物鼓励她的父母最终敞开心扉谈论他们的过去,比如她父亲在20世纪40年代曾在唐人街开过一家餐馆。“这真的是一个很棒的方式,不仅可以了解我家人的食谱,还可以了解我家人的故事。”她说。)”可推测,划线单词指的是“个人的一些曾经的过往或经历”。故答案为Personal experiences。 4.考查细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown.(杨女士还致力于支持唐人街的餐馆。 Raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and delivered them to those in need。 5.开放题。要求考生谈谈杨女士是如何激励考生努力保护中国烹饪传统的,考生言之有理即可。故参考答案为Her work inspires me to learn more about Chinese cooking and to share it with others。 (2023·天津·统考高考真题)阅读表达 Herman Cruse, a school bus driver from New Jersey, has been with Middle Township Public Schools for the past nine years. He believes bus drivers are the eyes and ears of students when they're away from home and they have a gift to discern what kids are feeling. During one morning ride, Cruse noticed a kindergartner seemed a little sad. When Cruse asked him what was wrong, the boy explained that he wasn't able to complete his reading assignment because his parents were busy with his four siblings (兄弟姐妹). An idea suddenly crossed Cruse's mind. “Listen, if you don't mind, I'd like to come to the school and read with you. ”he said. After receiving permission from the boy's teacher, Alex Bakley, Cruse showed up at her classroom the following week. When he walked in, the boy shouted proudly, “Hey, that's my bus driver!”They went into a quiet corner and began reading together. Later, a second student wanted to read with him, then a third. All the kids went to the teacher asking, “Can I read with Mr. Herman?” Cruse now volunteers to help kindergarten students with reading two days a week, and on a third day, he instructs the school's first-and second-graders. After dropping the kids off at school, of course. Every child looks up to Cruse, both on and off the school bus. “Herman is super positive and he's a bright light at our school who makes every child feel loved and heard. ”said Bakley. For Cruse, what started out as a way to kill time has now developed into a way to make a difference in the heart of a child. He used to go to the gym or library after delivering students to schools. It wasn't until he offered to help the boy on the bus that he realized there was something more rewarding he could be doing. It's a joy for him to see the kids get excited when they learn to sound out words. He loves how reading opens up a new world for them. 6.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 1? The ferocious wind shook the windows wildly, as though someone outside were beating on the glass. It was also New Year’s Eve. We were having our annual party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate. Suddenly, we heard loud explosions. Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks(火花) flying from electrical transformers(变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity? The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that! Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. How would we do that without electricity?(我们有15个人站着,我们还得做晚饭。没有电,我们要怎么办呢?)” 可知当时有15个人共同准备迎接新年,如何在断电的情况下准备这么多人的晚餐,变得很困难。故答案为No electricity./ The power failure./ There was no electricity./ Electricity was gone.。 13.考查细节理解。根据文章第三段“Why not cook on the barbecue?(为什么不在烧烤架上做呢)”、“so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight.(所以我们都坐在餐厅的桌子旁,一直唱到午夜前几分钟。)”和“we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball!(我们都开始倒数,然后我掉了一个网球!)” 可知,大家在烧烤架上做了饭、唱了歌,也做了新年倒数。故答案为They cooked on the barbecue, sang, and counted down./ By cooking on the barbecue, singing, and counting down.。 14.考查推理判断。根据文章第四段“Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve. (现在,我们仍然聚在一起庆祝新年,我们仍然谈论那个特别的夜晚。我想我们从来没有像那个新年前夜那样笑得那么开心过。)”可知,作者认为那一夜是特别的,是充满欢笑的。故答案为It was the most exciting one./ It was a night filled with laughter./ It was special./ Exciting./ Pleasant./ Unforgettable./ Joyful./ Different./ Memorable./ Unique.。 15.考查推理判断。本题要求考生基于对篇章整体内容的理解,对青年人面对突发事件应如何面对给出自己的想法,为开放性试题。故参考答案为:It is courage, for it gives us strength, which enables us to deal with difficulties. (2021·天津·高考真题)阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Most of us associate learning with younger people—kids in school and college or recent graduates early in their careers. But at Udemy, an open university offering online courses, Artist Anneke Camstra is engaged in the pursuit of lifelong learning and displays her potential for teaching. She loves the experience of gaining new knowledge and also loves sharing it with others. “I’m retired, but an artist never retires,” Anneke said. “The last few years on the internet have been a great joy for me. I’ve taken so many Udemy courses, and ifs such a great feeling to get my brain working again. I find just as much satisfaction in teaching animation(动画制作)too.” She reaches countless people with her online courses and exposes them to what they can accomplish on their own using animation software, such as GoAnimate and PowToon. Her motivation for teaching on Udemy is “to get the tools to the people.”“You can go such a long way to make things that look professional but still have your own voice,” she explained. Most of Anneke’s students start out thinking they’re not creative and can’t draw. Anneke understands how fear can get in the way of so many things people dream of doing. With her five-day challenge courses, she helps them get over the fear. Anneke loves the impact she has on her students. What makes her more proud of them is that they have gone from their first animation to creating their own works. She encourages people of all ages, especially older people, to cultivate their curiosity for life. Grandparents, for example, can learn to use GoAnimate and make animations together with their grandkids. “Tm an older woman, teaching and having fun learning again,” Anneke said, and she wants others later in their lives to catch up with her on this journey. 16.What does Anneke enjoy doing after her retirement? Or: To achieve their goals/what they dream of. 18.Anneke helps her students get over the fear and create their own animation works. 19.Develop. 20.To learn to use social media, because it allows them to get to know the outside world better. 【分析】这是一篇记叙文。讲述了退休艺术家Anneke Camstra,人老心不老,积极对待生活,在线上从事动画教学的故事。 16.考查细节理解。根据第一段中“She loves the experience of gaining new knowledge and also loves sharing it with others. (她喜欢获得新知识的经历,也喜欢与他人分享。)”以及她所说的话“I’ve taken so many Udemy courses, and ifs such a great feeling to get my brain working again. I find just as much satisfaction in teaching animation too. (我上了很多Udemy的课程,能让我的大脑重新工作真是太棒了。我在动画教学中也发现了同样的满足感。)”可知,Anneke退休后获得新的知识并与人分享,她参加Udemy课程并教授动画。故答案为Gaining new knowledge and sharing it with others. Or: Taking Udemycourses and teaching animation. 17.考查推理判断。根据第二段中“Her motivation for teaching on Udemy is ‘to get the tools to the people.’‘You can go such a long way to make things that look professional but still have your own voice,’ she explained.(她教Udemy的动机是‘把工具带给人们’。她解释说:‘你可以走很长一段路,让事情看起来很专业,但仍然有自己的声音。’)”可以推知,她希望学生制作动画有专业性,同时要表达自己的思想,有自己的特色,实现自己的梦想。故答案为To make professional products and express themselves. Or: To accomplish/complete professional and unique works. Or: To achieve their goals/what they dream of. 18.考查主旨大意。根据第三段中“Anneke understands how fear can get in the way of so many things people dream of doing. With her five-day challenge courses, she helps them get over the fear. Anneke loves the impact she has on her students. What makes her more proud of them is that they have gone from their first animation to creating their own works. (Anneke知道恐惧是如何阻碍人们梦想的事情。通过为期五天的挑战课程,她帮助他们克服恐惧。Anneke喜欢她对学生的影响。更让她感到自豪的是,他们已经从第一部动画发展到创作自己的作品。)”可知,第3段的主旨是Anneke帮助学生克服克服恐惧并创造他们自己的动画作品。故答案为Anneke helps her students get over the fear and create their own animation works. 19.考查词句猜测。划线词句后文“Grandparents, for example, can learn to use GoAnimate and make animations together with their grandkids. (例如,祖父母可以学习使用GoAnimate和他们的孙辈们一起制作动画。)”举例说明了Anneke主张让老年人和孙辈们一起制作动画,再根据划线词语“She encourages people of all ages, especially older people, tocultivatetheir curiosity for life. (她鼓励所有年龄段的人,尤其是老年人,cultivate他们对生活的好奇心。)”可知,Anneke鼓励老年人,培养发展他们的好奇心。从而推知划线词语cultivate应为“培养;发展”的意思。故答案为Develop. 20.考查读后表达。通读全文,以Anneke Camstra的榜样,我建议应该让老年人学习使用社交媒体,因为它使老年人能更好的了解外面的世界。故答案为To learn to use social media, because it allows them to get to know the outside world better. (2021·天津·高考真题)阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 I’ve always been creative since I was a little girl. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts (手工) and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation. Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance company out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change. One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up. As I dreamt bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness. As it became clearer that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance company became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfilment (满足感). I knew I needed to make a bigger change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a difficult decision—leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma. The last few years have been exciting because I’ve been following my heart to do what I love. Today I am living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand. Sometimes it’s hard to make a change, but I’m so glad I set the wheels of change in motion with that very small first step because it has led me to where I am today. 21.What was the author interested in when she was a little girl? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 25.Do you consider the author as your role model? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】21.She was interested in arts, crafts and music. Or: She was interested in creative things. 22.Boring./Dull./Uninteresting. 23.She felt/was energetic, enthusiastic and happy. Or: She was filled with energy, enthusiasm and happiness. 24.She quit/quitted her job and took the fashion-design course. Two years later I got my diploma.(我知道我需要做出更大的改变。经过一段时间的挣扎,我做出了一个艰难的决定,离开我的工作,并全职学习我的设计课程。两年后我拿到了毕业证书。)”可知,作者为了恢复她有创造力的生活,她参加了一个缝纫班,并参加了一个兼职设计课程,辞去了工作,去上时装设计课,根据题目要求,从中选出两点事实即可,不超过15个词。故答案为She quit/quitted her job and took the fashion-design course./ She attended a sewing class and took a part-time design course. 25.开放题。题目询问“你认为作者是你的榜样吗?请解释一下原因。”本题为开放性试题,根据自己的理解,言之有理,符合文章内容即可,不超过20个词,如果答案是肯定的,原因可以是“She has the courage to follow her heart and do what she really likes.(她有勇气追随自己的心,做自己真正喜欢的事。)”;如果答案是否定的,原因可以是“I don’t like changes and I want to live a secure life.(我不喜欢变化,我想过安全的生活。)”。故答案为Yes, (I do). She has the courage to follow her heart and do what she really likes./ Yes, (I do). I’d like to live a creative life and make changes when necessary as she./ No, (I don’t). (2020·天津·高考真题)阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother involves a lot of walking in someone else’s shadow, especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of “cool”. For years I wanted to do everything my elder brother Tyson did, but no matter how hard I tried, I was always the neglected (被忽略的) one. My legs just weren’t made to run like his. I could never play football or basketball well. I probably would have continued trying to keep up with him for the rest of my high school career, but when my family moved, everything changed. Tyson left for college, so I had to start at a new school all by myself. This new start gave me an opportunity to redefine myself and discover an entirely new version of “cool”. I don’t know what made me decide to try some new activities at the new school, but one day I chanced to show up for an after-school meeting of the Science Olympiad team. I had always been fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn’t fit Tyson’s definition of “cool”, I had never pursued them. On this day, for some reason, I did. As we organized teams, prepared resources and practiced answering questions, I felt more connected than I ever had to any sports team. I didn’t feel as though I needed to keep up with anybody else; I was finally with peers who understood me. It was so good to feel accepted for what I’m good at. For the first time in my life, I actually felt cool. Now I know who I am! I’m Tyson’s little brother, but that’s only part of my identity. I’m a cool guy in my own way, too. I’m relieved to know that “cool” has a much broader definition than what I used to think. 26.How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 1? (no more than 8 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 27.What changes offered a new start to the author after his family moved? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 28.According to Paragraph 3, what marked the turning point in the author’s growth? (no more than 7 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 29.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 30.What is your example of “cool”? Please explain why. (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】26.Receiving less attention than someone else. Or: Being/Feeling less successful than someone else. Or: Being/Feeling neglected. 27.That his brother left for college and he changed schools. Or: Tyson’s leaving for college and the author’s going to/attending a new school. 28.Joining the Science Olympiad team. Or: That he joined the Science Olympiad team. Or: Discovering his true interests (in science). 29.(How) the author discovered a broader definition of “cool”. Or: He has discovered his own way to be cool. Or: He found his own identity. 30.Playing football well is cool because I can show how strong I am. Or: Playing the piano is cool because it can give me joy. Or: Helping the poor is cool because it can give them hope and bring me pleasure. 【分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者一直活在哥哥泰森的阴影下,他的哥哥很酷,所以他总是被忽略。但当哥哥离开去上大学,他独自开始学校生活时,通过加入学校的Science Olympiad,他找到了真正的自己,也按自己的理解重新定义了”酷”。 26.词义猜测题。根据第一段的As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother involves a lot of walking in someone else’s shadow, especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of “cool”. For years I wanted to do everything my elder brother Tyson did, but no matter how hard I tried, I was always the neglected one. I was always the neglected one可推测,划线部分的意思是“得不到关注/被忽略”。故填:Receiving less attention than someone else. Or: Being/Feeling less successful than someone else. Or: Being/Feeling neglected. 27. 根据第二段的but when my family moved, everything changed. Tyson left for college, so I had to start at a new school all by myself. That his brother left for college and he changed schools. Or: Tyson’s leaving for college and the author’s going to/attending a new school. 28. I had always been fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn’t fit Tyson’s definition of “cool”, I had never pursued them. On this day, for some reason, I did. Joining the Science Olympiad team. Or: That he joined the Science Olympiad team. Or: Discovering his true interests (in science). 29. Now I know who I am! I’m Tyson’s little brother, but that’s only part of my identity. I’m a cool guy in my own way, too. I’m relieved to know that “cool” has a much broader definition than what I used to think.(现在我知道我是谁了! (How) the author discovered a broader definition of “cool”. Or: He has discovered his own way to be cool. Or: He found his own identity. 30. Playing football well is cool because I can show how strong I am. Or: Playing the piano is cool because it can give me joy. Or: Helping the poor is cool because it can give them hope and bring me pleasure. I remember the day shyness took over my life. I was 14 and having a French lesson The teacher told us to record ourselves speaking about a holiday. Perfect! I recorded myself with confidence. Then, I pressed "play" to listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me. My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events, not make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小). Everyday interactions, like ordering a coffee, became increasingly awkward and uncomfortable. And then, one day I was at a big conference and it suddenly hit me like lightning. All speakers were confident, comfortable with being seen. There were no quieter voices. But the trouble is, if the loud voices are the only ones you hear, we quiet people feel even more alienated(疏远的)。 The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too. That day I chose to stop hiding and embrace my shyness. No more feeling like I needed to change who I am in order to succeed. No more living a small life. Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of helping others, I could also push myself forward, bit by bit. Now, I'm happy to tell people I feel shy. I'm not ashamed any more. And I know that I’m not alone. 31.Why did the author feel strange about herself after listening to the recording? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 32.What is the main idea of Para.2? (no more than 10 words ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 33.What does the underlined word in Para.3 mean? (1 word) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 34.Why did the author create the Shy and Mighty Society? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 35.Suppose you are in charge of the Shy and Mighty Society, what will you do to help other shy people? And why? (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】31.Because her voice was different from what she had expected. Or: Because all she heard was a little kid talking. Or: Because of her little voice. 32.Her shyness had a/an(bad) influence/effect/impact on her(life) Or: Her shyness kept her hidden away. Or: Her shyness kept her away from other people. 33.Accept. Or: Welcome. 34.To help shy people(to shine) and push herself forward. Or: To help other shy people and herself. 35.I will organize a speech contest so that they can walk out of their comfort zone and become more confident. Or: I will share my experience with them, telling them how I handle my shyness. Or: I will encourage them to take part in various activities to improve their social skills. 根据第一段“I pressed "play" to listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me.” Because her voice was different from what she had expected. Or: Because all she heard was a little kid talking. Or: Because of her little voice. 32. 根据第二段“My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events, not make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小).” Her shyness had a/an(bad) influence/effect/impact on her(life). Or: Her shyness kept her hidden away. Or: Her shyness kept her away from other people. 33. 上句提到“The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too.” 根据“That day I chose to stop hiding”可知作者选择不再躲藏,接受自己的害羞。 Or: Welcome. 34. 根据最后一段“Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of helping others, I could also push myself forward,”可知作者创建Shy and Mighty Society是为了给像自己一样害羞的人发光的空间,在帮助别人的过程中,也可以推动自己一点点前进。 To help shy people(to shine) and push herself forward. Or: To help other shy people and herself. 35. I will organize a speech contest so that they can walk out of their comfort zone and become more confident. Or: I will share my experience with them, telling them how I handle my shyness. Or: I will encourage them to take part in various activities to improve their social skills. Haze Mabry, who has worked as a school keeper for thirteen years, walks into the school building every day and empties garbage cans, wipes down bathrooms and mops wet messes in the hallways. Last Friday, after he arrived at the school, instead of finding garbage to clean up, he found almost 800 students lining the hallways with handmade cards, blowing noisemakers and singing a full-throated happy birthday to him. It was his 80th. As he walked the long hallway, some popped out of line to hug him. They handed him so many cards that they filled several large boxes. Touched by their enthusiastic expression of affection, Mabry thanked them all. “They’re like my children,” Mabry said. On a regular day, students at the school sometimes come up to him to say they’re not feeling well or other times to tell him about something that happened at break. He knows most of the kids at the school, but can’t name each one. Some of them make him know them. Like Faith, who often forgets her backpack in the cafeteria, and Lucy, who just wants a hug. “He won’t brag(夸耀) on himself, but it doesn’t matter what he’s doing or where he is, he will always stop what he’s doing to take care of a child if that child is having a bad day. If a child approaches him, he will pause to give that child his undivided attention. He’s the most loved one in this building,” said Lori Gilreath, a reading teacher. Mabry works circles around all the students, cleaning up messes others don’t want to touch. He doesn’t expect a lot. Mabry said he hadn’t planned to do much for his milestone birthday, so he was happy the students had prepared the surprise celebration. Over the weekend, he worked through the piles of handmade cards at his house. One card from a student stood out to him. It was his 80th. As he walked the long hallway, some popped out of line to hug him. By lining the hallways, blowing noisemakers, singing a song, handing him cards, and hugging him. Or: By lining the hallways with (handmade) cards, blowing noisemakers, singing a song, and hugging him. Or: They lined the hallways, blew noisemakers, sang a song, handed him cards, and hugged him. Or: They lined the hallways with (handmade) card, blew noisemakers, sang a song, handed him cards, and hugged him. 38. Touched by their enthusiastic expression of affection, Mabry thanked them all. “They’re like my children,” Mabry said. Or: Fondness. 39. 根据倒数第二段的内容he will always stop what he’s doing to take care of a child if that child is having a bad day. If a child approaches him, he will pause to give that child his undivided attention. He’s the most loved one in this building,”以及最后一段Mabry works circles around all the students, cleaning up messes others don’t want to touch. He doesn’t expect a lot. (Because) he loves/cares about(the)students and works hard. Or: (Because) he loves the students and devoted to his work. Or: (Because) he is kind/caring /helping to the students , and hard-working. Or: (Because) he is regarded as a kind /warm-hearted /helpful/caring and hard-working man. 40. 本题的题目:who is the “sunshine” in your life?(谁是你生活中的阳光?) My father/mother.(Because) he/she loves me and encouraged me when I’m faced/confronted with difficulties. Or: My teacher.(Because) he/she cares about me and prepares me for my future career. Or: My friend.(Because) he/she brings me joy/happiness and gives me a lot of comfort/ help/ encouragement. Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal. The woman is 84-year-old Janet Fein. Last week, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. Fein has had a full life. She has raised five children and then had a career as a secretary until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a well-earned retirement. “I didn’t have anything to do in retirement and I didn’t think that playing bingo was up to my speed, ”Fein said. She said she decided to major in sociology. Fein spent her childhood in the Bronx, New York City, where her family lived in poverty. After graduating early from high school, she started working as a secretary at a dress manufacturer at the age of 16. Following her marriage, she spent 18 years raising her children at home. Throughout her life, Fein held various jobs, including 20 years as a secretary in a Dallas hospital, which she retired from in 2012. She also devoted 20 years to earning an associate degree, which she received in 1995. Fein, despite her life experiences, had a strong desire to earn a bachelor’s degree. She found joy in reading, writing papers, and learning new things. Taking advantage of a state program, she joined around 2, 000 others aged 65 and older in Texas who attend public university classes for free. Although less than 1% of U. S. college students are in this age group, health experts believe continuing education later in life can help maintain fitness. Despite worsening health conditions, Fein persevered, using a walker and oxygen, and even completing the remaining degree requirements through online classes. Her college advisor was Sheila Rollerson. She said that Fein never showed signs of giving up even with all of her difficulties. “She was plugging away at her studies and in return she received her bachelor’s degree and respect, ” Rollerson said. Renee Brown, one of Fein’s caregivers, found inspiration from her. At 53, Brown plans to begin nursing school, encouraged by Fein’s words of confidence and the fulfillment that comes with achievement. 66.Why did Fein want to study after retiring? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 67.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about? (no more than 5 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 68.Why did Fein take online classes to finish the last part of her degree requirements? (no more than 5 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 69.How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 7? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 70.What can you learn from the story? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】66.Fein wanted intellectual engagement and to achieve her long-standing goal of earning a bachelor’s degree./ Fein wanted to keep her mind active/have a fuller life and achieve her dream of getting her degree. 67.Fein’s life experience. 68.Because of her bad health. 69.She kept working hard at her studies. 70.Fein’s story tells us that we should overcome difficulties and persist in learning, and establish the consciousness of lifelong learning. 根据第四段““I didn’t have anything to do in retirement and I didn’t think that playing bingo was up to my speed, ”Fein said. She said she decided to major in sociology.(费恩说:“我退休后没什么事可做,我觉得玩宾果游戏跟不上我的速度。” Fein wanted intellectual engagement and to achieve her long-standing goal of earning a bachelor’s degree./ Fein wanted to keep her mind active/have a fuller life and achieve her dream of getting her degree. 67. 根据第五段“Fein spent her childhood in the Bronx, New York City, where her family lived in poverty. She also devoted 20 years to earning an associate degree, which she received in 1995.(费恩的童年是在纽约市布朗克斯度过的,她的家庭生活贫困。 故答案为Fein’s life experience. 68. 根据倒数第三段“Despite worsening health conditions, Fein persevered, using a walker and oxygen, and even completing the remaining degree requirements through online classes.(尽管健康状况不断恶化,费恩还是坚持了下来,使用助行器和氧气,甚至通过在线课程完成了剩余的学位要求)”可知,费恩参加网络课程来完成她学位要求的最后一部分是因为她身体不好。 Because of her bad health. 69. 根据划线词上文“She said that Fein never showed signs of giving up even with all of her difficulties.(她说,费恩即使遇到种种困难,也从未表现出放弃的迹象)”以及后文“in return she received her bachelor’s degree and respect(作为回报,她获得了学士学位和尊重)”可知,费恩遇到困难也没有放弃,继续努力学习,所以她获得了学士学位和尊重。 She kept working hard at her studies. 70. Fein’s story tells us that we should overcome difficulties and persist in learning, and establish the consciousness of lifelong learning. I remember the day I sat down and considered my future quite clearly. I had been widowed recently, and I had an elderly mother to support but no income of my own. I no longer had the luxury of a husband supporting me, so it was time to get a job. With my background and qualifications, the easiest way for me to earn money was to become a teacher. A friend told me his school was looking for an English teacher, so I arranged an interview with the principal. Fifteen minutes after stepping into her office, I was given the job and asked if I was able to begin teaching that same day. The current English teacher appeared very keen to leave! I wondered why she had made such an abrupt decision, but I was secretly pleased that her loss had become my gain. I walked towards the classroom on that first day, wondering about the wisdom of my decision to accept the principal’s offer. The thought of standing in front of a group of teenagers made me scared and I started to panic. The classroom was empty when I entered it. Slowly, the teenagers I was expecting arrived in groups of four and five. Finally every seat was taken and I stared out at the blank faces in front of me. They had been shown little respect and so they had given up on education and on themselves. No one was listening or seemed to care what I was doing. I knew I wasn’t a gifted teacher and it was only my first day, but nothing I did motivated these students. They were bored and restless. I knew why their previous teacher had left. That night I sat at home. The same question kept repeating itself in my head, even when I tried to distract myself by watching late-night movies: “How could I make a huge difference to their lives?”. I decided I would take up the challenge. It was a slow process, but it was also the most rewarding experience of my life. It took time, but my patience was rewarded. They had discovered the joy of learning and I had discovered what it really means to be a teacher. 71.What made the writer have to get-a job herself? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 72.Why was the writer able to begin teaching that same day? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 73.How does the writer feel on that first day? And why? (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 74.What does the writer intend to tell us in paragraph 4? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 75.How do you understand “rewarding” according to the story? (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】71.She has to support her mother but no income of her own without her husband. 72.Because the current teacher appeared very keen to leave./Because the current teacher had made such an abrupt decision. 73.She felt happy for getting the job but panic at the thought of being a teacher of teenagers. 74.How challenging her job is./How difficult it is to teach such students. 75.“Rewarding” in the story suggests that the slow process of making a difference in the students’ lives was fulfilling and brought a sense of accomplishment. 根据第一段中“I had been widowed recently, and I had an elderly mother to support but no income of my own. I no longer had the luxury of a husband supporting me, so it was time to get a job. She has to support her mother but no income of her own without her husband. 72. 根据第二段中“I was given the job and asked if I was able to begin teaching that same day. The current English teacher appeared very keen to leave!(我得到了这份工作,并询问我是否能够在同一天开始教学。 Because the current teacher appeared very keen to leave./Because the current teacher had made such an abrupt dicision. 73. 根据第三段中“but I was secretly pleased that her loss had become my gain. 和“The thought of standing in front of a group of teenagers made me scared and I started to panic.(一想到要站在一群青少年面前,我就感到害怕,开始惊慌。)” She felt happy for getting the job but panic at the thought of being a teacher of teenagers. 74. 根据第四段中“The classroom was empty when I entered it. They were bored and restless.(当我走进教室时,教室里空无一人。 他们感到无聊和不安)”和最后一段中“I decided I would take up the challenge.(我决定接受挑战。)” How challenging her job is./How difficult it is to teach such students. 75. 根据最后一段中“I decided I would take up the challenge. It was a slow process, but it was also the most rewarding experience of my life. It took time, but my patience was rewarded. They had discovered the joy of learning and I had discovered what it really means to be a teacher.(我决定接受挑战。 故填“Rewarding” in the story suggests that the slow process of making a difference in the students’ lives was fulfilling and brought a sense of accomplishment. When Poppy Johnson, a 23-year-old London-based college student, was only five, she accidentally saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. Ever since then, she has been suffering from a fear of pop legend Michael Jackson. Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson — a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house. But she never tells them this would add to her fear at home. Poppy explained, “I never really spoke about it or told it to other people, as I worried they’d think I was silly.” Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it. Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online. At that time, Poppy’s life was quite tough and she always felt that her heart was in her mouth. Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist (催眠师). After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson. Now Poppy’s situation is getting better and better. She reminds anyone else who experiences similar things that it is important to seek help as early as possible. 56.What made Poppy feel fearful at home? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 57.How did Poppy usually avoid things related to Michael Jackson in public?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 58.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean? (no more than 5 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 59.What did Poppy do to deal with her fear? (no more than 15 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 60.What do you think of Poppy’s situation and what is your suggestion? (no more than 20 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】56.The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents. 57.By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else. 58.She felt very frightened. 59.She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents. 60.I think that her situation is fearful. It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help. 根据第二段前两句“Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson—a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house.”(每当她看到或听到任何关于迈克尔·杰克逊的东西——一首歌、一次采访甚至一张海报,她都会感到恐惧。 The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents. 57. 根据第三段“Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it.”(对波比来说,克服对迈克尔·杰克逊的恐惧并不容易,每当她和朋友出去玩,听到迈克尔·杰克逊的歌时,她就会找借口走开。 By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else. 58. 根据第四段第一句“Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online.”(今年早些时候,当纪录片《寻找梦幻岛》上映时,迈克尔·杰克逊的新闻和照片在网上到处都是。) 故推知her heart was in her mouth意为“感到害怕的”。故答案为She felt very frightened. 59. 根据第五段“Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist. After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson.”(波比最近开始公开她不寻常的恐惧,甚至开始采取措施来处理它。 She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents. 60. I think that her situation is fearful . It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help.或I think her situation gives us a good warning lesson. It is important to seek help as early as possible, whoever experiences similar things. Why → Because…/ To do…/ Because of…/ Thanks to…;How → By doing…。 Science has a lot of uses. 42.Why does Brook use a story to introduce scientific theories?( no more than 15words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 题型02 主旨表达题 【题型诠释】 1. 2. 设问形式: ① What’s the main idea of the passage / Paragraph ...? ② What’s the passage mainly about? ③ What’s the best title for the passage? What .../ Why ... While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science. 41.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 题型03 推断表达题 【题型诠释】 1. 62.Why did the author complain to his mother about his father?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 64.What conclusion can we draw about the author’s father from the underlined sentence in the second but last paragraph?(no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 题型04 猜词表达题 【题型诠释】 1. 2.设问形式: ① What’s the meaning of the underlined word / phrase / part in the ... I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve. 11.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 1?
