Selina Zhang, a high schooler, has invented a trap that could potentially get rid of lanternflies (斑点灯蝇) in the city. She first noticed this pest in grade school. At the time, Zhang was visiting a market near her hometown and the colorful bugs caught her eye.
Zhang’s first encounter with the lanternfly relates to the quote, “Not all that glitters is gold.” This bug whose bright red underwings stand out from black forewings (前翅) might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem.
This insect has a healthy appetite for most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits. This invasive (侵入的) pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily affected areas. It is known to be a nuisance (讨厌的东西) in outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles.
Zhang eventually realized that this insect was a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. Most people choose insecticides to manage this invasion, but this can leave harmful remains. Some others use a sticky band to trap pests, but this method is also unsafe as it can trap other small animals and insects.
In search of an ecologically acceptable method, Zhang got inspiration from chess boards and the “Dance Revolution”. She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks non-stop, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time and navigated (进行导航) unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study, Zhang knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella.
She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created a solar-powered, self-cleaning “tree” that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net.
4. What does the quote “Not all that glitters is gold” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Things looking valuable may be worthless.
B. Zhang’s hometown fails to get rid of the bug.
C. Bodies of the beautiful lanternflies are shining.
D. The bug destroys agricultural industry despite its beauty.
5. What can be learned about lanternflies?
A. They live on greens and animals.
B. They have a bad effect on people’s life.
C. People hate them laying eggs everywhere.
D. Their underwings are shorter than their forewings.
6. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The application of the trap.
B. The source of the trap.
C. The process of inventing the trap.
D. The challenges of designing the trap.
7. Which of the following can best describe Zhang?
A. Determined and innovative. B. Creative and outgoing.
C. Reliable and knowledgeable. D. Intelligent and confident.

We all have good days and bad days with our health, and it can be difficult when our bodies are not performing the way we want them to or need them to. But our health is not out of our power to control. As a matter of fact, we all do have a super powerful tool right in our own heads. It’s our amazing brain.
Researchers that study the brain-body connection have shown in numerous experiments how the brain can be tricked into believing it is getting better. A simple sugar pill (药片) can relieve pain or even cure an illness if the person believes that the pill being taken is genuine medicine.
That’s how powerful our brains are. They can make physical changes in our bodies beyond what we would normally give them credit for. There is a book I reread regularly called Super Brain. The authors, Deepak Chopra and Rudolph E. Tanzi, point out that any of us can, if we choose, set up or create our own placebo (安慰剂) effect at any time without any kind of pill.
What’s super interesting, as Chopra and Tanzi explain, is that “the effect isn’t limited to drugs, which is important to remember: anything you believe in can act as a placebo”.
They also ask where the relief comes from when the placebos are not actually doing anything themselves. They explain that it is simply “the mind telling the body to get well”. The body really believes what it was being told and then it relieves the pain or heals (治愈) the sickness because it believes it can. In other words, your mind can and does influence healing of all kinds including pain, disease and wounds that our bodies deal with from time to time.
That is certainly worth trying for most, if not all of us, whenever we want to cure our pain, problems or disease. These kinds of things are probably very helpful to do on a regular basis even.
8. What does the author think of the role of the brain in health?
A. It’s strange. B. It’s powerless. C. It’s fantastic. D. It’s uncertain.
9. What does Super Brain suggest about placebo effects?
A. They need pills. B. They’re limited to drugs.
C. They’re always temporary. D. They can be created mentally.
10. What is the key for a placebo to work according to the text?
A. The degree of pain. B. The person’s belief.
C. The type of illness. D. The doctor’s advice.
11. What does the author want to say in the text?
A. Placebo s are ineffective in medicine.
B Medicine is the best way to treat illness.
C. Pain cannot be relieved without medicine.
D. The mind influences the healing of the body.

A growing number of psychologists are getting out the message that anxiety has a positive role to play in our lives. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, who recently published Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good for You (Even Though It Feels Bad), thinks our culture goes too far in demonizing (妖魔化) the difficult emotion.
Psychologist Todd Kashdan, director of the Well-Being Lab at George Mason University in Virginia, is a critic of what he calls happyology. We don’t always have to be smiley and calm, or worry there’s something wrong with us. Sometimes, he says, worry itself is what is right. Fear of heights? Good, because you’re not going to be the person who falls off a cliff while taking a selfie.
These experts wonder if the natural role that anxiety plays in our lives is somehow being forgotten. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced in March 2022 that the prevalence of anxiety had increased globally by 25% over the previous year. The WHO called the finding “a wake-up call to all countries to step up mental health services and support”. Do we know for certain that this data represents a public health crisis? Or could it mean that millions of folks are quite rightly feeling uncertain, stressed out and afraid?
We can experience healthy, often completely valid periods of anxiety without being categorized as mentally ill, according to behavioral psychologists. Anxiety is an adaptive strategy in human evolution. It helps us to prepare for the uncertain future. Anxiety helps us solve unknowns by planning and imagining, by plotting out possible ways.
According to Alice Boyes, who has a PhD in clinical psychology, coping with anxiety by avoiding them just reinforces your insecurity, because you’re not getting better at solving the problem. “Over time, you will feel less and less capable,” she warns.
The key is to manage anxiety before it overtakes us, like tending a garden so the weeds don’t spread. How do you do that? Solutions include meditation, exercise, compassionate connection such as volunteering, access to nature and mentally reframing what we’re experiencing.
12. Which statement is Kashdan’s opinion?
A. Fear may prevent you from taking dangerous actions.
B. Happyology is quite popular among the young nowadays.
C. Being smiley can stop us from worrying something wrong.
D. Difficult emotions such as anxiety should not be demonized.
13. What is the author’s attitude toward WHO’s announcement?
A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Positive.
14. What does the underlined word “reinforces” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Resists. B. Increases. C. Adjusts. D. Reveals.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. The upside of anxiety. B. The key to managing anxiety.
C. The origin of difficult emotions. D. The right attitude to negative emotions.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. Overflowing (堆积的) email inboxes, housework, social obligations — it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. However, one simple tool that can help us stay updated is the to do list. ____16____
There are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to reduce anxiety that comes with having never ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don’t have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand. ____17____ As well as this, our brains are more likely to remember information that is presented in a structured and organized manner. And finally, lists serve as proof of what we have achieved. ____18____
____19____ This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. ____20____ It was stopped half way through and only some people were allowed to make plans. The researchers found that the group permitted to plan bad reduced anxiety and performed better in the second task. The problem was, the others still had the warm up talk stuck in their active memory. So, once we tick something off our list, our brain forgets about it and we can relax.
All in all, it seems lists are a valuable tool for staying updated!
A. The experiment began with a warm up task.
B. Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off — simple!
C. They can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation.
D. A to do list item is the kind of thing that will take long hours of work.
E. Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow.
F. However, in the never-ending sea of tasks, you feel like you aren’t keeping up.
G. Another possible reason our brains love lists is because of something called the “Zeigarnik Effect”.

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.
Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.
On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.” “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park to reopen.
Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked. Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom?” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

【答案】范文
Callie spent the rest of the evening thinking about her decision. She wanted to go to Fan World, but in the end she decided that her promise to her neighbor was more important. The next day at school, Callie told Tamara that she would not be able to go to Fun World. Tamara tried to understand, but Callie could tell Tamara was disappointed. The girls hardly spoke for the rest of the week.
On Sunday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot. “Your mother said you made a tough choice. Thank you for giving a hand today.” Callie smiled as she cleaned with a large trash bag. “Do you need any help?” a voice behind her asked. Callie turned, surprised to see Tamara. “I know you made a promise to clean up the garden, and I wanted to come help you. My mom said she could take us to Fun World next weekend.” With joint efforts, they finished the cleaning. Both Callie and Tamara realized that once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.
