Have you ever heard of Johannes Vermeer a Dutch artist in the 17th century? His paintings, which are warm, comfortable and quiet, are collected in different museums.
One of his famous paintings, Girl with the Pearl Earring, called the “Mona Lisa of the North”, is collected in the Royal Mauritshuis Museum in Holland. Let us enjoy his other works collected in different places.
Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window
Date of creation: 1657
Type and size: Oil on canvas 83×64. 3cm
Current collection: Dresden State Art Museum, Germany
The most striking feature of the work is undoubtedly the blue and white porcelain plate with fruit in the foreground. In fact, this seemingly ordinary plate is a microcosm (缩影) of China’s participation and change in world trade.
The Girl with the Glass
Date of creation: 1659-1660
Type and size: Oil on canvas 78×67cm
Current collection: Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick
In the picture, the man and the girl looked happy, but the other man at the table looked upset. This is a scene of civic life, reflecting the life of the Dutch people at that time.
The Milkmaid
Date of creation: 1658-1660
Type and size: Oil on canvas 45×41cm
Current collection: The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland
A milkmaid is coolly pouring a bowl of milk. Next to the maid was a window, in which a pane of glass was broken. The light from the window illuminates the copper kettle hanging on the wall.
The Art of Painting
Date of creation: 1666-1668
Type and size: Oil on canvas 120×100cm
Current collection: The Vienna Art History Museum in Vienna Austria
With the white checkered floor, Vermeer demonstrates his command of perspective and foreshortening. That’s a technique that uses distortion (扭曲) to give the illusion of an object moving gradually away in the distance. Other elements, like sight lines, mirrors and light sources, describe the moment through space and position.

B. Royal Mauritshuis Museum in Holland.
C. Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick.
D. The Vienna Art History Museum in Vienna, Austria.

I spent my childhood on a farm in northern China, surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with cattle and sheep. Those early memories are sweet and vibrant. I worked hard in school, determined to become the top student in my class, overcoming hardships from my hometown in the county to the provincial capital, and eventually from the north to the south of China.
As I stepped onto my college campus, I dreamed of soaring like an eagle under blue skies. I pictured myself traveling to see the northern lights in Finland, observing penguins in Antarctica, marveling at the mysterious pyramids of Egypt, or relaxing on a Mediterranean beach. I was aware that I couldn't have my head in the cloud, but I truly believed these dreams could come true if I committed myself fully to my studies.
Now, as a professor in an elite high school, I look back on the first half of my life — ordinary, yet undeniably romantic — and I feel an immense sense of gratitude. I owe this to my loving parents, my respected teachers, and the stable society around me. Above all, I am most grateful to the 18-year-old girl who faced every obstacle with courage and fought to pursue her dreams in the countryside.
Each of us lives only once, and the most significant chapter is often the years of youth. As Chinese writer Ye Shengtao once said, “The wildness of youth is the bill of exchange for old age. The greatest sorrow in life is to fail to live up to one's youth. ”
Dear students, youth is filled with passion and strength, yet it is also confusing and fleeting. As you stand at the crossroads of life, take a moment to ask yourself: will your future thank you for the choices you make today? I believe that each of you will cherish your youth and make the effort to build a future you can be proud of.
24. What does the underlined sentence “I couldn't have my head in the cloud” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. I should be practical. B. I should be romantic.
C. I should be unrealistic. D. I should be abnormal.
25. What should the author mostly owe her success to?
A. Peace and love in her community. B. Values and virtues taught by her parents.
C. Inner drive and dedication from herself. D. Guidance from a famous professor in college.
26. Why did the author cite Ye Shengtao's words in paragraph 4?
A. To enjoy life when we are young. B. To discover the true meaning of life.
C. To avoid miserable experiences in life. D. To motivate young people to work hard.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Where to experience farm life? B. Why should we cherish old age?
C. How to be a respectable professor? D. What kind of life do you want to live?
C
In the remotest corner of the northern wilderness, where the air is thin and the nights are long. A mysterious creature moves silently across the rugged landscape. This is Shadow, a wolverine (金刚狼) born into a world where only the strongest survive.
As a young wolverine, Shadow learns quickly that life in the wild is a daily struggle built for endurance and strength. Her oily coat helps her survive the biting cold and repel moisture. With paws twice as large as most animals of her size and sharp, curved claws, she is a master at catching prey, digging out insects or climbing trees.
But physical strength isn't enough to survive in the harsh environment where food is scarce and competition is fierce. Shadow is becoming an opportunist, searching for the next meal. Whether it is a small mammal running through the bush or a dead deer left behind by larger predators. As winter came, the landscape turned into a frozen wasteland. Food became even scarcer. Shadow moved across the snow with ease. Her large paws acted like snowshoes, giving her the advantage of silent hunting.
After a long and arduous search, the female wolverine caught the scent of a dead deer in the air. Hungry bears and a pack of wolves had already moved in to claim the kill. Though her competitors had power and speed, Shadow had something they didn't. She hid herself, waiting to snatch whatever was left.
But just as she began to enjoy her prize, another wolverine appeared on the horizon. A fierce battle occurred. Claws slashing, jaws snapping. The two were evenly matched. But Shadow's persistence gave her the edge. She delivered a decisive blow, forcing her competitor to leave. Exhausted but victorious, the female reclaimed her meal, proving that only the strongest survive.
With incredible strength, adaptability, and an unyielding spirit, Shadow has earned her place among nature's most impressive survivors.
28. What physical feature helps Shadow catch prey in the wild?
A. Her powerful bite. B. Her water-resistant fur.
C. Her keen sense of smell. D. Her sharp and curved claws.
29. What aspect of Shadow's environment makes survival particularly tough?
A. The high density of large predators.
B. The extreme cold and shortage of food.
C. The lack of suitable prey in the tropical forest.
D. The need to defend territory from other wolverines.
30. What can be inferred about Shadow from the text?
A. She avoids competition with other animals.
B. She can escape from other huge animals easily.
C. She mainly relies on herself to hunt in the wilderness.
D. She never encounters other wolverines while hunting.
31. What is the main theme of the passage?
A. The intelligence of wolverines in avoiding large predators.
B. The territorial behavior of Shadow in the northern wilderness.
C. The physical features of Shadow and her survival skills in the wild.
D. The interactions between Shadow and other huge animals in the forest.
D
People learn a new language for all sorts of reasons — to work or study in another country, move abroad, or simply for pleasure. No matter the motivation, many students find that the experience of studying a new language enriches their lives. But did you also know a language changes your brain at a physical level? Numerous studies have examined how learning a new language can make a difference. Let’s take a look at how learning a new language affects your brain.
We have known that learning a new language can grow one’s perspective for years. But now scientists find that learning languages grows parts of the brain. Scientists studied the brains of students in the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, who are required to learn new languages at an alarmingly fast rate. Many must become fluent in Arabic, Russian and the Persian dialect Dari in just 13 months.
The researchers compared the brains of these students to the brains of medical students who also must learn a tremendous amount in a very short period, but without the focus on languages. The brains of the language learners exhibited significant new growth in the hippocampus (海马体) and in parts of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮质). The medical students’ brains showed no observed growth.
Interestingly, the amount of growth in the brains of the linguists correlated with better skills, so those with better language skills also experienced more growth in the hippocampus and areas of the cerebral cortex that relate to language.
For other students who had to work harder to improve language skills, the scientists found greater growth in the motor area (运动区) of the cerebral cortex. Where and how much change takes place in the brain are linked to how easily one picks up a language. But it remains to be seen why this is.
32. Which areas of the brain show significant effects from language learning?
A. The hippocampus and the brainstem.
B. The hippocampus and the cerebellum.
C. The hippocampus and parts of the cerebral cortex.
D. The motor area of the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum.
33. What might be the reason for the brains of language learners growing?
A. Enhancing language sensitivity.
B. Doing a series of physical exercises.
C. Shaping mathematical and logical thinking.
D. Involving a lot of memory and information processing.
34. What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' findings in the last paragraph?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Dismissive. D. Objective.
35. Where is this passage most likely to appear?
A. A travel brochure. B. A scientific journal.
C. A book review. D. A health magazine.

The town beside the sea was abuzz with (充满) the news. The governor was holding a grand banquet, and everyone was invited.
The artists and accountants, the librarians and lawyers, taxi drivers and professors. But no one was as thrilled as Nasruddin. He owned a vineyard at the edge of the town, and the governor would be serving Nasruddin’s wine at the feast.
On the day of the big event, Nasruddin woke up extra early. He dug deep into his closet and began to search. He smiled as he pulled out his long red silk coat. It was his favorite piece of clothing, embroidered with bright purple grapes. He only wore the coat on very special occasions.
So that morning, Nasruddin laid the coat on his bed, along with a nice shirt, perfectly pressed pants, and his shiniest shoes. He would come right home after work and dress up and then head straight to the party. Then he set off for the vineyard.
Nasruddin worked especially hard all day and when he finally looked up at the clock, the banquet was starting in 10 minutes. He looked down at his clothes. Dirty marks of mud and stains of grape juice were everywhere. The front and back of his shirt were clammy with sweat. There was no time for him to go home to put on his fine silk coat.
In order not to be late for the governor’s banquet, he headed to the fancy dinner straight from a long, hot day at his vineyard, so his clothing was stained with mud, grapes and sweat. When he arrived, the doorman frowned. Nasruddin gave him a friendly wave and breezed through the door. Stepping inside the banquet hall, he saw everyone dressed in their very finest clothing sipping on his wine.
Nasruddin had always been a friendly, talkative sort, so he began making the rounds. But as he encountered his friends and neighbors, he noticed no one greeted him back. Instead, they turned away. To make things worse, not even the waiter carrying trays of food would come near him. No one would approach him, even though the governor was serving his wine at the dinner. From those unfriendly faces, Nasruddin was lost in thought.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Nasruddin realized what he wore was to the point.

Nasruddin came up with a solution.

M: Thanks, Helen.
W: Well, could you tell us what this popular book is about?
M: It's called In Praise of Slow. It's about the rise of the Slow Movement.
W: What is the Slow Movement?
M: It is a revolution against the idea that faster is always better. When I say “slow”, I don't mean doing everything slowly. It's about doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It's about quality in everything we do.
W: When and where was this “slow” idea born?
M: It was born in the early 1990s in Italy. It began as the Slow Food Movement, which centered on food. More recently, “slow” has become popular worldwide.
W: Have we reached the point of trying to speed up something that cannot really be sped up?
M: Of course. The Internet connects us in wonderful ways, but it also leads us into trying to hurry up relationships. So you find people online saying they have more than 4, 000 friends. The very idea of friendship is not considered important. And we may be losing the ability to make friends. In Britain, a study found that in the past ten years, the number of children who say they have no best friend rose from under one in eight to nearly one in five!

Have you ever heard of Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch artist in the 17th century? His paintings, which are warm, comfortable and quiet, are collected in different museums.
One of his famous paintings, Girl with the Pearl Earring, called the “Mona Lisa of the North”, is collected in the Royal Mauritshuis Museum in Holland. Let us enjoy his other works collected in different places.
Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window
Date of creation: 1657
Type and size: Oil on canvas 83×64. 3cm
Current collection: Dresden State Art Museum, Germany
The most striking feature of the work is undoubtedly the blue and white porcelain plate with fruit in the foreground. In fact, this seemingly ordinary plate is a microcosm (缩影) of China’s participation and change in world trade.
The Girl with the Glass
Date of creation: 1659-1660
Type and size: Oil on canvas 78×67cm
Current collection: Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick
In the picture, the man and the girl looked happy, but the other man at the table looked upset. This is a scene of civic life, reflecting the life of the Dutch people at that time.
The Milkmaid
Date of creation: 1658-1660
Type and size: Oil on canvas 45×41cm
Current collection: The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland
A milkmaid is coolly pouring a bowl of milk. Next to the maid was a window, in which a pane of glass was broken. The light from the window illuminates the copper kettle hanging on the wall.
The Art of Painting
Date of creation: 1666-1668
Type and size: Oil on canvas 120×100cm
Current collection: The Vienna Art History Museum in Vienna, Austria
With the white checkered floor, Vermeer demonstrates his command of perspective and foreshortening. That’s a technique that uses distortion (扭曲) to give the illusion of an object moving gradually away in the distance. Other elements, like sight lines, mirrors and light sources, describe the moment through space and position.
21. Where can you appreciate the “Mona Lisa of the North”?
A. Dresden State Art Museum, Germany.
B. Royal Mauritshuis Museum in Holland.
C. Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick.
D. The Vienna Art History Museum in Vienna, Austria.

In fact, this seemingly ordinary plate is a microcosm (缩影) of China’s participation and change in world trade.

A 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第二段“As I stepped onto my college campus, I dreamed of soaring like an eagle under blue skies. I pictured myself traveling to see the northern lights in Finland, observing penguins in Antarctica, marveling at the mysterious pyramids of Egypt, or relaxing on a Mediterranean beach. I was aware that I couldn't have my head in the cloud, but I truly believed these dreams could come true if I committed myself fully to my studies.(当我踏入大学校园时,我梦想着像鹰一样在蓝天下翱翔。 故选A。
根据第三段“Now, as a professor in an elite high school, I look back on the first half of my life—ordinary, yet undeniably romantic—and I feel an immense sense of gratitude. I owe this to my loving parents, my respected teachers, and the stable society around me. Above all, I am most grateful to the 18-year-old girl who faced every obstacle with courage and fought to pursue her dreams in the countryside.(现在,作为一名精英高中的教授,当我回首人生的前半段——平凡但不可否认很浪漫——我感到一种巨大的感激之情。这要归功于我慈爱的父母、尊敬的老师和周围稳定的社会。最重要的是,我非常感谢那位18岁的女孩,她勇敢地面对每一个障碍,在农村为追求梦想而奋斗。)”可知,作者在该段中回首自己的前半生并对重要的人表达感谢,结合作者在第一段对自己人生经历的描述“I spent my childhood on a farm in northern China, surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with cattle and sheep. Those early memories are sweet and vibrant. I worked hard in school, determined to become the top student in my class, overcoming hardships from my hometown in the county to the provincial capital, and eventually from the north to the south of China.(我的童年是在中国北方的一个农场度过的,周围是连绵起伏的青山,点缀着牛羊。那些早期的记忆是甜蜜而充满活力的。我在学校努力学习,决心成为班上的尖子生,克服了从县城到省会、最终从中国北方到南方的重重困难。)”不难看出,这里提到的功劳最大的十八岁女孩就是当初的作者自己,她把成功的最大原因归于自己曾经的坚持和努力。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Each of us lives only once, and the most significant chapter is often the years of youth. As Chinese writer Ye Shengtao once said, “The wildness of youth is the bill of exchange for old age. The greatest sorrow in life is to fail to live up to one's youth. ”(我们每个人只活一次,最重要的篇章往往是青春岁月。正如中国作家叶圣陶所说:“年轻时的野性是年老时的汇票。人生最大的悲哀就是辜负青春。”)”可知,作者引用著名教育家叶圣陶的话,目的是激励年轻人努力奋斗,不负青春,这与整篇文章的主题思想也是吻合的。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。总览全文,特别是最后一段“Dear students, youth is filled with passion and strength, yet it is also confusing and fleeting. As you stand at the crossroads of life, take a moment to ask yourself: will your future thank you for the choices you make today? I believe that each of you will cherish your youth and make the effort to build a future you can be proud of. (亲爱的同学们,青春充满激情和力量,但也令人困惑、稍纵即逝。当你站在人生的十字路口时,花点时间问问自己:你的未来会感谢你今天做出的选择吗?我相信,你们每个人都会珍惜青春,努力建设一个值得骄傲的未来。)”可知,作者通过介绍自己的生活经历,鼓励学生们努力奋斗,实现自己想要的人生,D选项“你想过上哪种生活”符合文章主题,适合作为标题。故选D。
But physical strength isn't enough to survive in the harsh environment where food is scarce, and competition is fierce.
D 29. B 30. C 31. C

根据文章第四段“Though her competitors had power and speed, Shadow had something they didn't. She hid herself, waiting to snatch whatever was left.(尽管她的竞争对手有力量和速度,但Shadow有着他们没有的东西。她躲了起来,等着抓剩下的东西。)”和第五段“But just as she began to enjoy her prize, another wolverine appeared on the horizon. A fierce battle occurred.(但就在她要开始享受自己的战利品时,另一只金刚狼出现了。那么一场激烈的战斗就开始了。)”可知,Shadow在野外独自觅食,当她遇到其他大型动物时,她会躲藏起来,伺机而动;而遇到同类时,她不会与其分享食物,而是为食物而战斗。故可以推断出她主要依靠自己在荒野中生存,故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“With incredible strength, adaptability, and an unyielding spirit, Shadow has earned her place among nature's most impressive survivors.(凭借令人难以置信的力量、适应能力和不屈不挠的精神,Shadow在自然界最令人印象深刻的幸存者中赢得了一席之地。)”
C 33. D 34. D 35. B

根据第三段中“The brains of the language learners exhibited significant new growth in the hippocampus (海马体) and in parts of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮质).(语言学习者的大脑在海马体和部分大脑皮层中表现出显著的新生长)”可知,语言学习对大脑的海马体和大脑皮质的部分区域有显著影响。
根据第二段中“Scientists studied the brains of students in the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, who are required to learn new languages at an alarmingly fast rate. Many must become fluent in Arabic, Russian and the Persian dialect Dari in just 13 months.(科学家们研究了瑞典武装部队翻译学院学生的大脑,这些学生被要求以惊人的速度学习新语言。许多人必须在短短13个月内掌握流利的阿拉伯语、俄语和波斯方言达里语)”和第三段中“The brains of the language learners exhibited significant new growth in the hippocampus (海马体) and in parts of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮质).(语言学习者的大脑在海马体和部分大脑皮层中表现出显著的新生长)可推知,学语言者大脑的增长可能是由于涉及大量的记忆和信息处理。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。最后一段提到“Where and how much change takes place in the brain are linked to how easily one picks up a language. But it remains to be seen why this is.(大脑中发生变化的位置和程度与学习语言的难易程度有关。

根据空前“There is a long history in psychology and philosophy regarding emotions as irrational (非理性的) forces that get us into trouble. Emotions were seen as irrational in the past.(在心理学和哲学中,长期以来一直认为情感是非理性的力量,它们会让我们陷入麻烦。过去,人们认为情感是非理性的。)”可知,空前提到情感在过去被认为是非理性的,且根据空后“Emotions such as fear and disgust have clear survival purposes.(像恐惧和厌恶这样的情感有明显的生存目的。)”
根据空前“Emotions such as fear and disgust have clear survival purposes.(像恐惧和厌恶这样的情感有明显的生存目的。)”
根据本段内容“It is the key to understanding their role in human behavior. Emotions mentioned above reflect the nature of emotions as both adaptive and suffering. The so-called “emotion paradox” arises when we realize that emotions are not only useful but can also cause great suffering.(这是理解它们在人类行为中作用的关键。上述提到的情感反映了情感既是适应性的也是痛苦的本性。当我们意识到情感不仅实用而且还能引起巨大痛苦时,所谓的“情感悖论”就产生了。)”可知,后文所提到的“这是理解情绪在人类行为中作用的关键。这些情绪反映了情绪的本质,即适应和痛苦。”这些内容都是在说明要正确地分辨情绪,故B项“分辨情绪是非常重要的”符合本段首句,概括总结本段内容,故选B项。
【39题详解】
根据空前“Without emotions, human tasks such as survival and reproduction would be nearly impossible.(没有情感,人类的任务,如生存和繁殖,几乎是不可能的。)”
根据空前“Our emotions operate on both physiological and psychological levels. Beyond just influencing how we feel, they trigger changes throughout our brain and body. While they are crucial for functions like bonding and avoiding danger, emotions can also cloud judgment and lead to short-sighted decisions.(我们的情感在生理和心理层面上都有作用。它们不仅影响我们的感受,还会在我们的大脑和身体中引发变化。尽管它们对于建立联系和避免危险等功能至关重要,但情感也会影响判断,并导致目光短浅的决定。)”可知,空前提到情感不仅会影响我们的感受,还会影响我们的判断,故D项“因此,我们应该适当地调节我们的情绪”符合,空前提出了情感的重要性,此空与空前构成因果关系,因为情感很重要,因此我们要适当地调节我们的情绪,故选D项。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Nasruddin realized what he wore was to the point.

Nasruddin came up with a solution.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nasruddin realized what he wore was to the point. He looked around and saw all the guests wearing their finest clothes except him. It was his clothing that everybody had a problem with. He spent most of his time kneeling in the dirt and sweating in the sun as he trimmed vines and picked grapes before crushing them to make wine. His clothes were filled with mud and sweat. Those people judged him from his clothes and regarded him as an unwelcome guest. What could Nasruddin do to change the situation?
Nasruddin came up with a solution. He went back home rapidly. He pumped extra bubbly soap into a steaming hot bath and climbed in. He scrubbed from his head to his toes, then he dusted himself with powder and buttoned up his fancy shirt and pants. Finally, he slipped on his long red silk coat, the one embroidered with bright purple grapes. He took one last look at himself in the mirror. Marvelous! He rushed back to the governor’s feast.
