In the San Diego Zoo, there lived Lucas, a four-year-old African penguin. Lucas was not like the others because he suffered from a disease known as bumble foot, which includes a range of bad foot conditions that stop animals from standing upright, and a lack of treatment can lead to possible death.
For Lucas, life had been a series of treatments and disappointments. The zoo’s team had tried everything, but nothing seemed to work on his disease. Dr. Beth Bicknese, a member of the zoo’s team, said, “I’ve looked after Lucas for years. I am very sad when Lucas develops pains.”
Then, there was a hope. The zoo’s team got the help of Thera-Paw, a company that designs products to help animals move better.
“The orthopedic shoes (矫形鞋) from Thera-Paw help Lucas to fully join the group and show behaviors that are more typical for a penguin — such as climbing the rocks, swimming, nesting and finding a suitable mate,” said Dr. Beth Bicknese.
Debbie Denton, a senior wildlife care specialist in the team, was there when Lucas first put on his shoes. “We were pleasantly surprised to see the immediate change in him,” she said. “Seeing him move about now gives us hope that he may be OK going forward and able to live a full life.”
With every step Lucas took, he walked better, stood up straighter, and was more balanced. The rocky place that was hard to move around before was now fun to explore for Lucas.

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends — 532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be losing true friends.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone, or even wrote letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen, much of which is spent on social media platforms.
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can hinder people from building deep friendships. “If we always stay online, we will have little time for our real-world friendships.” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. In tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. Instead, you need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand.
8. What do some experts mainly worry about Kaylee’s online friendships?
A. She might be missing out on academic opportunities.
B. She could be lonely despite having many online friends.
C. She is spending too much time away from family activities.
D. Her online friends could be negatively influencing her behavior.
9. According to Katie Davis, what positive aspect does online communication bring to friendships?
A. Kids can have more face-to-face time. B. Kids can find true friends more easily.
C. Kids can stay in constant touch and share more. D. Kids can make fewer mistakes in friendships.
10. What does the underlined word “hinder” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Prevent. B. Affect. C. Collect. D. Promote.
11. What is Larry Rosen concerned about?
A. Kids might spend too much time playing games.
B. Kids might not be able to use social media properly.
C. Kids might not have enough time for online friendships.
D. Kids might confuse online friends with true friends.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D
【解析】

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be losing true friends.(但有没有可能是Kaylee的网上朋友让她感到孤独呢?这是一些专家的看法。他们说,网上联系是保持联系的好方法。然而,一些专家担心,许多孩子忙于上网,他们可能会失去真正的朋友)”可知,对于Kaylee的网上友谊,一些专家最担心的是尽管她有很多网友,但她可能很孤独。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.(“这绝对是一种积极的影响。
故选A。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life.(罗森还担心,如今的孩子可能会把社交媒体上的“朋友”误认为是生活中的真正朋友)”可知,拉里·罗森在担心孩子们可能会把网上的朋友和真正的朋友搞混。故选D。

If you had to use one word to define yourself, what would it be? Imagine trying to summarize your entire being in just one word or two — a challenging task indeed. Labels (标签), like “confident” or “creative”, may suggest certain aspects, but they can never fully capture the richness and depth of a person’s character.
The biggest issue with labeling people is that it oversimplifies (过度简化) their complex nature. Using labels infers people’s current behavior is fixed, but people change. As they learn, they grow, and someone we think of in a certain way today might not remain the same in a few months or years. When we label people, we deny their complexity, their right to change, and their richness as human beings.
Furthermore, labels can become self-fulfilling prophecies (预言). When people are constantly told they are a certain way, they may start to remember these labels and act accordingly. This restricts their potential for growth and development, as they may feel trapped by social expectations. For example, if parents label a child as “annoying” or “a complainer”, the child may feel their needs aren’t important. Over time, being ignored for complaining too much can lead the child to believe that expressing their needs is not acceptable. Consequently, their self-perception (自我认知) may suffer, and they may even start to devalue themselves as a result.
Linguist Benjamin Wharf once argued that the words we use to describe what we see are rarely objective, as they carry personal prejudice (偏见). Labels can be harmful because they can reduce individuals to a single characteristic or stereotype. Therefore, we should be mindful of the language we use and the labels we attach to people. By adopting a more open view of life, people, and events, we can appreciate the richness and diversity of human experience, and cope with the complexities of our interconnected world.
12. What is the main problem with labeling people?
A. It encourages creativity. B. It oversimplifies people’s complex nature.
C. It enhances people’s self-perception. D. It promotes social harmony.
13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A. Labeling people can capture their complex nature and individuality.
B. Labels never affect an individual’s self-perception or behavior.
C. Labeling people can prevent people’s potential for growth and development.
D. Labels applied to people will remain relevant indefinitely.
14. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Promoting open-mindedness. B. Using more labels to define people.
C. Avoiding any form of communication. D. Sticking strictly to fixed descriptions.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Tricks for Labeling People
B. The Exploration of Labeling Humans
C. Benjamin Wharf’s Perspective on Language
D. Beyond Labels: Embracing the Richness of Human Experience
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

因此,D选项“Beyond Labels: Embracing the Richness of Human Experience(超越标签:拥抱人类经验的丰富性)”是最合适的标题。故选D。

I sat in the corner of the room surrounded by a cloud of misery (痛苦) as I had been forbidden (禁止) to go out by Mom for a whole day, but I didn’t make a serious mistake.
I studied in the local school and dreamed to be an artist but Mom was against my dream. She thought the profession of artist couldn’t aid a person to meet the daily expenses (日常开销). I didn’t want her to worry as I knew about the hard work Mom did in order to survive after my father died in an accident.
As each day passed, my dream became more passionate and I practiced more. One day I wandered in the hill to gather inspiration from the nature. Then I stopped at a beautiful place and watched those green grass at the bottom, but after a few seconds I fell asleep. In my dream I was creating a work of art that was famous in the whole world. After some time I woke up and went back.
The following day I read about a painting competition that was being held in the town. I got the perfect opportunity to realize my desire but I didn’t have the courage to ask Mom for money to buy acrylic paints (丙烯颜料) and some brushes for the competition. In the evening when Mom returned from work, I saw she had a few notes and that money would be enough for me to buy those materials.
The next morning before my mom woke up, I quietly took the money and went to the place where the competition was being held. As the competition began, I was quite nervous but I calmed down after a few seconds. I drew the place that I saw in my dream. I was so focused at my own work that I forgot time but I submitted (递交) my work just a couple of seconds before the end.

【答案】参考范文
Going back home, I was afraid to see Mom. I dared not look at her as she was boiling with anger. My voice didn’t come out but somehow I managed to gather up the courage and told her the truth. She blamed me for wasting money to buy those useless things. However, seeing my persistence, she didn`t say anything else.
There was a call for me from the competition after a week. As soon as Mom picked up the phone and listened, her eyes widened in surprise and that phone call left her speechless. After the phone, Mom told me that it was wonderful news from the competition saying that I won the first prize worth $300. Mom realized that I was really good at art. She said she was wrong and apologized. From then on she no longer stopped me from desiring to be an artist and supported me in my every step.

4. What is the main symptom of bumble foot?
A. Poor eyesight. B. Inability to stand upright.
C. Loss of appetite. D. Difficulty in breathing.

6. What helped Lucas get a new life?
A. A pair of orthopedic shoes. B. A surgery.
C. A suitable mate. D. Some specific medicine.
7. How did Lucas’ behavior change after using the product from Thera-Paw?

9. According to Katie Davis what positive aspect does online communication bring to friendships?
D
If you had to use one word to define yourself, what would it be? Imagine trying to summarize your entire being in just one word or two — a challenging task indeed. Labels (标签), like “confident” or “creative”, may suggest certain aspects, but they can never fully capture the richness and depth of a person’s character.
The biggest issue with labeling people is that it oversimplifies (过度简化) their complex nature. Using labels infers people’s current behavior is fixed but people change.
