For some, it’s having access to fantastic restaurants, bars and shops. For others, it’s about great accommodation options, a small-town vibe or a historic atmosphere. Here are some wonderful ski towns in North America you can’t miss this year. Mammoth Lakes, California. A long ski season makes Mammoth Lakes especially appealing to skiers of all levels. Mammoth Lakes also offers plenty of options for off-mountain entertainment, whether you’re looking to indulge in theater and the arts, shopping local or planning a spa day. Banff, Alberta. Walk 15 minutes in just about any direction from the town of Banff and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the majestic wilderness of Banff National Park. The resort town and gateway to the surrounding park boasts a surprising number of shops, art galleries, bars and excellent restaurants for its size. North Conway, New Hampshire. Located within the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire, North Conway sits within a half-hour drive of more than a dozen ski resorts. Off the slopes, visitors can explore the town’s unique Victorian buildings with New England charm. The Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center makes for an excellent rest-day diversion. Stowe, Vermont. Steepled churches and clapboard houses make Stowe a typical New England ski town, complete with excellent options for all kinds of skiers. While there are plenty of fine dining establishments and luxury resorts catering to well-heeled travelers, there’s a lively après scene as well, especially at The Matterhorn. Rest day activities can include a tasting at the famous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory just down the road in Waterbury. 1. What advantage does Mammoth Lakes have over other ski towns? A. The beautiful countryside. B. The long ski season. C. The special art galleries. D. The excellent local shops. 2. Where should you go if you’re interested in architecture? A. Mammoth Lakes. B. Banff. C. North Conway. D. Stowe. 3. In which section of a newspaper can the text be found? A. Environment. B. Travel. C. Culture. D. Business. B 2. C 3. 由第一段中的“Here are some wonderful ski towns in North America you can’t miss this year. B Kenya’s tree planting plan turns out to be of great benefit to both the environment and the Kenyans. Launched in 2016 by Elizabeth Wathuti when she was twenty-one years old, the Green Generation Initiative is a Kenyan charity that has been planting trees to deal with deforestation (滥伐森林) and climate change in the East African nation. The initiative’s primary focus is on addressing food insecurity in the region through planting fruit trees, as well as developing young climate activists through environmental education in schools. Since its foundation, over 30,000 trees have been planted in Kenya, while thousands of school children have not just planted trees but also adopted them to ensure that young people learn the importance of acting as a guardian over the health of the environment. The trees have recorded a survival rate of over 98 percent, as they remain tended to from young trees to maturity. Speaking to world leaders at the recent United Nations Climate Conference in Glasgow (COP26), Elizabeth issued a serious warning on the threat of climate change. Over two million of Kenyans are facing climate related hunger now. In 2025, half of the world’s population will be facing water shortage. The climate crisis will displace 80 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Elizabeth said, “Environment is the foundation of development, and it can no longer continue being taken for granted. I have been doing what I can. Inspired by the great Wangari Maathai, I founded a tree growing initiative that enhances food security for young Kenyans.” So far, they have grown 30,000 fruit trees to maturity, providing desperately needed nutrition for thousands of children. “Every day we see that when we look after the trees, they look after us. We are the adults on this Earth right now, and it is our responsibility to ensure that the children have food and water,” she added. 4. What is the Green Generation Initiative intended for? A. Raising money. B. Making policies. C. Educating the adults. D. Fighting climate change. 5. What has been achieved since 2016? A. Green awareness has been raised. B. 3,000 trees have been planted. C. 80 million people have been saved. D. School education has been guaranteed. 6. What crisis are Kenyans encountering at present? A. Sickness. B. Water shortage. C. Starvation. D. Economic crisis. 7. Which of the following can best describe Elizabeth Wathuti? A. Honest and determined. B. Considerate and responsible. C. Friendly and optimistic. D. Cooperative and humorous. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段第二句“Launched in 2016 by Elizabeth Wathuti when she was twenty-one years old, the Green Generation Initiative is a Kenyan charity that has been planting trees to deal with deforestation (滥伐森林) and climate change in the East African nation. 根据第二段第二句“Since its foundation, over 30,000 trees have been planted in Kenya, while thousands of school children have not just planted trees but also adopted them to ensure that young people learn the importance of acting as a guardian over the health of the environment. 故选A项。 根据第三段第二句“Over two million of Kenyans are facing climate related hunger now. 根据最后一段最后一句“We are the adults on this Earth right now, and it is our responsibility to ensure that the children have food and water,” she added. 可知,Elizabeth Wathuti是一个负责的人;根据“So far, they have grown 30,000 fruit trees to maturity, providing desperately needed nutrition for thousands of children.(到目前为止,他们已经种植了30000棵果树,为成千上万的儿童提供了急需的营养)”并结合1小题和2小题的解析得知,她懂得为环境、为他人考虑,因此她也是一个体贴的人。 C We experience the full range of emotions during the final scenes of the movie trilogy, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Watching Frodo being surrounded by the fire we hold our breath; we overjoy when Gandalf saves him. So what’s going on? There must be a special kind of movie magic that makes us care about what we know isn’t real. As it happens, there is a special kind of magic, but it’s not in the movie. It’s in the minds of people who watch it. Dr. Brian Schwartz, professor of the University of Chicago, believes this magic is especially potent when we watch movies on the big screen. “What happens first,” he argues, “is that you give up control. The movie is in control.” In normal life our brains are like tractor beams (牵引光束), busy taking in any information that seems important or interesting. This is called the attentional system. But as the characters come alive on screen, we stop sensing our body. Psychologists call this kind of mental state “flow”: when our attention is completely absorbed in one activity and there isn’t any juice left in our attentional system to take in any more information. We are effortlessly swept along in the currents of the ride. This is why we love the movies: it’s like going on a roller coaster (过山车) for the brain. However, there’s something else magic at work here too: in a movie theater, as we give up control, our sense of reality changes. Deep down we know that what we’re seeing is make-believe, but because we’re not going to act upon it, because it doesn’t have a direct physical bearing upon us, we don’t test if it is real. It’s like that part of our brain goes on a temporary vacation. Something else is happening in the brain to make this possible too. The mind has different abilities, and each one has a distinct place in the brain. Our knowledge that we’re only watching a movie happens in the front part of our brain. But emotions come from the limbic system (边缘系统), in the back of the brain. Even though our front brain knows that a movie isn’t real, the back brain never gets the message. It’s a sad fact that the intensity of the emotions that movies produce in us may be decreasing. At home, or on our smart phones, movies are wonderfully convenient. But watching in this way limits their magic because we’re in control; we have the power to stop the film or fast forward bits we don’t like. “If you’re not giving up control to the movie,” Schwartz says, “you’re getting a thinned-out movie experience.” More control might be more convenient, but it won’t mean more magic. Surely, we deserve better than that, and Frodo does too. 8. What can be inferred from this passage? A. Distinct parts of our brain are interactive. B. Movies on phones can take us to the state of flow conveniently. C. The limbic system can help us sense the reality. D. Going to theaters creates better viewing experience. 9. Why does the author mention a roller coaster? A. To demonstrate the strong feeling of the attentional system. B. To explain the filmmaking techniques used by directors. C. To describe psychological methods involved in seeing a movie. D. To illustrate the excitement that a movie can provide. 10. What does the underlined word “potent” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Subjective. B. Complicated. C. Effective. D. Temporary. 11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Emotions out of Control B. Different Choices of Moviegoers C. Your Brain on Movies D. The Rise of Movie Theaters 【答案】8. D 9. D 10. C 11. 由文章最后一段前三句“At home, or on our smart phones, movies are wonderfully convenient. But watching in this way limits their magic because we’re in control; we have the power to stop the film or fast forward bits we don’t like. 由文章第二段最后三句“Psychologists call this kind of mental state ‘flow’: when our attention is completely absorbed in one activity and there isn’t any juice left in our attentional system to take in any more information. We are effortlessly swept along in the currents of the ride. This is why we love the movies; it’s like going on a roller coaster (过山车) for the brain. Brian Schwartz, professor of the University of Chicago, believes this magic is especially potent when we watch movies on the big screen. 通读全文,并结合文章第一段最后三句“As it happens, there is a special kind of magic, but it’s not in the movie. It’s in the minds of people who watch it. Dr. Brian Schwartz, professor of the University of Chicago, believes this magic is especially potent when we watch movies on the big screen. C。 D “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. ” This is dedicated to my first-year self four years ago, who was addicted to getting good grades, and failed to seek the happiness found in everything else that college has to offer. Like some people, I grew up with a family that valued academics over all else, who gave you a little extra love when you were doing great in your classes, and took it away when you didn’t. As a result, my self-worth became tied to my academic success. As an international student, I sometimes felt our parents didn’t quite understand the heavy academic weight. There is a difference between trying to always better yourself for yourself, and simply putting too much on your plate until you burn out from attempting to live up to certain expectations. We should all strive to do the former, but unfortunately our mindsets have been always wired to follow the latter. I used to believe school killed the creative spirit inside all of us, but as I get older and further into my academic career, I find that it is we who make the choice to kill that creative spirit. I am definitely not saying that you should throw your GPA out of the window and go painting all day. However, we should all try to develop a long-sighted perspective on how we want to shape our lives. Take some classes on topics that you’re genuinely interested in learning about, not just passing. Join clubs or work on projects that resonate with you and push you beyond your boundaries. And most of all, accept the fact that failure and loss are sometimes inevitable in life. I promise you, when you look back at these four years, you will not remember the good grades or the bad grades, but you will hold in your memory the connections you made with people, the things that inspired you to create and the times you learned something special. And so I ask you now, what do you want to get out of college? 12. Who is the author of the passage? A. A professor. B. A freshman. C. A parent. D. A graduate. 13. What did the author’s parents stress most on his college life? A. Seeking happiness. B. Getting good grades. C. Building self-worth. D. Developing various interests. 14. What is bettering ourselves for according to the author? A. To be a better self. B. To realize our dreams. C. To push our boundaries. D. To live up to others’ expectations. 15. Which of the following may the author probably agree with? A. Academic growth helps to promote creativity. B. Students themselves have a say in their hobbies. C. Failures can be avoided with more efforts put in. D. School is to blame for killing students’ creativity. D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“This is dedicated to my first-year self four years ago, who was addicted to getting good grades, and failed to seek the happiness found in everything else that college has to offer.(这句话献给四年前一年级的自己,当时的我沉迷于取得好成绩,没有从大学所能提供的一切中寻找快乐)”可推知,这篇文章的作者是毕业生。 根据第二段中“Like some people, I grew up with a family that valued academics over all else, who gave you a little extra love when you were doing great in your classes, and took it away when you didn’t. 根据第三段“There is a difference between trying to always better yourself for yourself, and simply putting too much on your plate until you burn out from attempting to live up to certain expectations. We should all strive to do the former, but unfortunately our mindsets have been always wired to follow the latter.(努力让自己变得更好,和简单地把太多事情放在自己的盘子里,直到你因为试图达到某些期望而筋疲力尽,这两者是有区别的。 故选A。 根据倒数第二段中“Take some classes on topics that you’re genuinely interested in learning about, not just passing. Join clubs or work on projects that resonate with you and push you beyond your boundaries. And most of all, accept the fact that failure and loss are sometimes inevitable in life.(参加一些你真正感兴趣的课程,而不是敷衍了事。 It’s hard to do much to treat a cold or the flu once you’re infected. With a burning sense of responsibility, Mike loved his job so much that he always went the extra mile. In the very early morning, Tim could always see Mike busy with breakfast for him. Later on, they went to school together to accompany the students to greet a new day of learning. At table, Mike exchanged what he knew in school with Tim. Typically, Mike would always wear a shiny smile for the funny moments; frown for his students’ problems or challenges. At that moment, Tim did feel his father’s passion for the class. Having finished the housework and said goodnight to Tim, Mike, eventually, sat at his desk peacefully and buried himself in what he enjoyed. In the delicate light of a lamp, he made preparations for the next day, trying to make what students found boring in the textbook come to life. Sometimes, Mike worried Tim might be envious of the attention he gave to other children. However, Tim didn’t complain about it. Instead, he admired his dedication and love. It was one of the qualities that made Mike such a fantastic father. Tim liked making videos of activities in daily life, and kept his camera handy in case there was any opportunity to capture footage Also, he captured some of Mike’s. One weekend, Tim approached Mike’s room, hoping to get advice on making videos for the next class meeting themed Love, only to find Mike staring at the photos of his students on the wall, a little upset. “What happened?” Tim asked as he stepped into Mike’s room. “You know, some of your classmates recently have been rebellious (叛逆的). Despite discipline and heartfelt communications, they’re still breaking rules, skipping classes and complaining about my strictness. Though I could be demanding sometimes, I’m concerned about them. ” Mike sighed. He started looking for footage for the video, capturing every piece of footage he could use. These clips record Mike’s daily tasks for the children. These clips contain Mike’s heart communications, hard work, and most importantly, love. When the day came for the class meeting, Tim volunteered to play a video for the class. The students, along with Mike got surprised when the video came to an end. To Mike’s surprise, the rebellious students, those who broke school rules, often played truant and always complained about his strictness were full of tears. They stood up slowly, bowed deeply to Mike, and sincerely said “Mike, thank you for all your efforts for us.” Mike was so moved that he gave each of them a big hug. 5 What has been achieved since 2016? A. Green awareness has been raised. B. 3,000 trees have been planted. C 80 million people have been saved. D. School education has been guaranteed. 6. What crisis are Kenyans encountering at present? A. Sickness. B. Water shortage. C. Starvation. D. Economic crisis. 7. Which of the following can best describe Elizabeth Wathuti? A. Honest and determined. B. Considerate and responsible. C. Friendly and optimistic. D. Cooperative and humorous. C We experience the full range of emotions during the final scenes of the movie trilogy, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. A Distinct parts of our brain are interactive. The Rise of Movie Theaters D “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. It’s hard to do much to treat a cold or the flu once you’re infected.
