Actually, some unfamiliar words come from familiar words. Today, we are going to learn word formation, which can help you easily guess the meaning of unfamiliar words and enlarge your vocabulary. Present the learning objectives of this class: After this class, you will be able to 1.Know what word formation is. 2. Grasp how words are formed in four ways of word formation 3. Guess the meaning of new words using the knowledge of word formation. To visualize what will be learned in the class and help students know their learning objectives. 5 mins Step 2 Presentation Present the definition of word formation and four common ways of word formation: What is word formation? Word formation refers to the ways in which new words are formed on the basis of other words. There are mainly four ways of word formation: compounding, derivation, conversion, and abbreviation. To help students know the definition of word formation and grasp the structure of the knowledge to learn in this class. 15mins Step 3 Listing examples and practice Present four ways of word formation one by one, and show students how words are formed and guess the meaning : Compounding means combining two or more words. Examples: starfish, suitcase, sleepwalk. Derivation means adding a prefix or suffix to a word. Examples:likely-unlikely,correct-incorrect, improve-improvement, create-creation. Conversion means that a word has two or more parts of speech. Examples: clean, rain, trouble. Abbreviation means shortening or abbreviating words. Examples: VIP, WHO, GPS, APP, ad, lab, app, brunch, smog.
