Some little boys are addicted to Legos. Others can’t get enough of dinosaurs. But it is Blackpool Tower in England that has captured one 6-year-old’s imagination.
The Blackpool Tower was built in 1894. It is twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty in NYC. Now Charlie Barratt has achieved his dream by becoming the voice of the attraction’s lift (电梯). Charlie did a project about the tower at school, recording his own version of the lift’s existing speech. In the voice-over, Charlie welcomes visitors to the attraction. He also offers interesting facts about the tower. One of his teachers contacted Kenny Mew, the tower’s operation manager, and told him about Charlie’s love for the 518-foot (157 meter) structure.
Mew told BBC Radio Lancashire, “His school reached out to me and said they had this young boy who was passionate about Blackpool Tower and had actually recorded the lift speech and I was thinking to myself: how’s he done that? I played it back and he had the speech word for word that we’d had recorded already in the lift and it just sounded amazing. And we thought we were going to give Charlie the opportunity to do it. He was absolutely brilliant. He’s done an amazing job, and we’re really proud of what he’s done.”
Charlie was then invited into a professional recording studio to perform his version and his mum, Wendy, is as thrilled as he is. She told the BBC, “He adores the tower.” Wendy first took Charlie to visit the tower when he was a baby. She said he loved it “from the minute he can walk”.
Now Charlie is the voice of the attraction’s lift. As well as the lift, there are plans in progress for Charlie to lend his voice to other areas in the future.

A. His mother Wendy inspired him.
B. His teacher encouraged him to do so.
C. He had a strong interest in Blackpool Tower.
D. He decided to attract more tourists to it.
7. Which words can better describe Charlie?
A. Passionate and unselfish.

The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.
Many millennials and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
8. Which of the following can be described as a “lying down” lifestyle?
A. Following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice.
B Living in a simple way and leaving the worries behind.
C. Bearing lots of hard work to improve one’s living conditions.
D. Standing up and facing the reality consistently.
9. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young?
A. Improvements in living conditions. B. Growing pressure from family and social life.
C. Increasing material possessions from families. D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
10. What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group?
A. Understanding. B. Intolerant. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
11. What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?
A. They would rather escape than take challenges. B. They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.
C. They find their dreams far beyond their reach. D. They never really drop their responsibilities.
D
Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. Astonishing numbers of people with years of schooling are in effect illiterate. This month’s Ljubljana Manifesto (宣言) explains: “The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.”
That’s frightening, because “higher-level reading” has been essential to civilization. It enabled the enlightenment and an international increase in empathy. Without it, we would suffer a lot. As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” When you read a book on paper, you can be entirely inside the experience, absorb hundreds of pages of details thoroughly and begin to capture the world’s complexity. Online, says Maryanne Wolf of UCLA, we are “skimming, scanning, scrolling”. The medium is the message: doing deep reading on your phone is as hard as playing tennis with your phone. Recently, a bright 11-year-old told me I was wasting time on books: he absorbed more information faster from Wikipedia. He had a point. But digital readers also absorb more misinformation and seldom absorb fine perspectives.
In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
12. What can we learn about digital reading from paragraph 1?
A. Digital reading has solved the problem of illiteracy.
B. Digital reading has lessened the practice of deep reading.
C. Digital reading has made deep reading accessible to wider readers.
D. Digital reading has aroused a greater appreciation for deep reading.
13. What is the purpose of the figures used in paragraph 2?
A. To display the popularity of digital reading.
B. To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
C. To present the unfavorable situation of literacy.
D. To stress the illiterate’s lower-level reading skills.
14. What does the underlined word “demerits” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Effects. B. Depths. C. Features. D. Drawbacks.
15. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Advantages of digital reading. B. Benefits of higher-level reading.
C. Ways to encourage digital reading. D. Measures to practice deep reading.

In my community, there is a little boy who suffered from congenital muscle disease. He always considered himself the most unfortunate person in the world. Although he looked no different from ordinary people, it’s difficult for him to do some delicate movements. He often lost control of his hands and dropped things on the ground. Even after a short run, he would easily get out of breath. Depression and inferiority made him almost always alone. All of these make his mother very worried.
Then one spring, the boy’s mother bought some saplings (树苗) from a nearby market. She intended to plant them in the forecourt. She told her children to plant a sapling each person. The mother said to her three children, “Whose seedling grows best, I will buy him or her a favorite gift.” The boy also wanted to get his mother’s gift. But seeing his brothers and sisters carrying water to water the trees happily, anyhow, an idea hit him: he hoped the tree he planted would die soon. So watering it once or twice, he never attended to it.
Several days later, when the little boy went to see his tree again, he was surprised to find it grew some fresh leaves instead of withering (枯萎), and compared with the trees of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more vital. He wondered what on earth had happened. As expected, his mother kept her promise, bought the little boy his favorite gift and said to him, “From the tree you plant, you will become an outstanding botanist (植物学家) when you grow up.”
Since then, the little boy slowly became optimistic. One day, the little boy lay on the bed but couldn’t sleep. Looking at the bright moonlight outside the window, he suddenly recalled what the bi ology teacher once said, plants generally grow at night.

4. Why does the author mention other boys in the first paragraph?
A. To imply that Blackpool Tower is better than Legos and dinosaurs.
B. To highlight that Charlie Barratt has a unique passion.
C. To indicate that Charlie Barratt cannot get along with other boys.
D. To criticize other boys who fail to achieve their dreams.
5. What can we know about Blackpool Tower?
A. It did not have a lift speech until Charlie made one.
B. Its manager attempted to find a boy to record lift speech.
C. It is now using Charlie’s remade recording in its lift.
D. It is the highest tower in England with interesting facts.
6. Why did Charlie record the voice-over for Blackpool Tower on his own?
A. His mother Wendy inspired him.
B His teacher encouraged him to do so.
C. He had a strong interest in Blackpool Tower.
D. He decided to attract more tourists to it.
7. Which words can better describe Charlie?
A. Passionate and unselfish.
B. Hard-working and persuasive.
C. Promising and kind.
D. Enthusiastic and committed.

As well as the lift, there are plans in progress for Charlie to lend his voice to other areas in the future. (现在,查理是这个景点电梯的代言人。除了电梯,查理还计划在未来为其他领域发声)”可知,现在Charlie 是这个大厦的代言人,而且他在专业的录音棚录制了他自己版本的讲解。由此可推知,现在正在电梯里使用查理重新制作的录音。故选C。

B. Living in a simple way and leaving the worries behind.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11.

【答案】12 B 13. C 14. D 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了数字阅读对深度阅读习惯的破坏性影响,以及深度阅读在文明和人类发展中的重要性。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. (数字阅读似乎正在破坏“深度阅读”的习惯。)”和“The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.(数字领域可能比历史上任何时候都促进了更多的阅读,但它也提供了许多诱惑,以肤浅和分散的方式阅读——甚至根本不阅读。这越来越危及更高水平的阅读。)”可知,数字阅读削弱了深度阅读的实践。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
根据划线词所在句“Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” (《卢布尔雅那宣言》的专家们记录了数字阅读的demerits:“最近各种各样的研究表明,批判性阅读、有意识阅读、慢读、非战略性阅读和长篇阅读的数量正在下降。”)”中“a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading”可知,这些都是数字阅读盛行带来的问题和弊端,所以划线词demerits与drawbacks同义,意为“缺点,弊端 ”。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying. (简而言之,正如西北大学的教授们在2005年所预见的那样,我们正在回到只有精英“阅读阶层”才会阅读长文本的时代,这令人担忧。)”可知,文章最后表达了作者对现状的担忧,害怕我们会回到只有精英“阅读阶层”才会阅读长文本的时代。由此推知,作者接下来可能会就如何练习深度阅读给出具体的建议。故选D项。

【答案】参考范文:
“Why not go to the forecourt and take a look at my tree?” he said to himself. Then he got out of the bed and came to the courtyard on tiptoe. Before he approached the tree he planted, he found his mother was watering it carefully. All of a sudden, he understood it was his mother who had been secretly fertilizing and watering his small tree! The tree would have withered but for the care of his mother. Standing in the darkness, deeply touched, how he wanted to say thanks to his mother. But he didn’t.
From that night on, he understood what his mother meant and decided to change himself. When he was in trouble and wanted to give up sometimes, mother’s small figure that night always lingered in his mind. Being strong and confident, he overcame all the difficulties he was faced with. Decades passed. The little boy became a botanist, who was confident and optimistic. Love is the best gift for growth. With the gift, a thin tree can flourish and even grow into towering trees.
