A
This year, it felt as if every good movie was also an argument for why movies matter. They reward your attention, engage your feelings and respect your intelligence.
Petite Maman (Céline Sciamma)
The death of a grandmother, the sorrow of a parent, the acquisition of a new friend — these ordinary experiences, occurring in the life of an 8-year-old girl, provide the basic structure of this spare, perfect film. Whether it’s best described as a modern-dress fairy tale, or a low-tech time travel fantasy is up to you. What’s certain is that the performance of the cast causes maximum emotional impact. (Coming to theaters.)
Summer of Soul (Questlove)
This documentary about a series of open-air concerts in Harlem in 1969, connecting impressive performances with interviews with musicians and audience members, is a shot of pure joy. But the film is more than a time capsule: It’s a history lesson and an argument for why art matters, and what it can do, especially in time of anxiety. (Streaming on Hulu.)
Bring Your Own Brigade (Lucy Walker)
This documentary about California wildfires of September 2021 is also, almost by accident, an exploration of the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The picture Walker paints is complicated, partly because that’s the way people are: panicked, generous, stupid and brave. The movie is hardly optimistic, but its open-mindedness provides a buffer against despair. (In theaters.)
The Velvet Underground (Todd Haynes)
Like “Summer of Soul”, this documentary revisits the music of the 1960s in a spirit that is more historical than just recalling the past. Rather than gathering present-day musicians to celebrate their ancestors, Haynes concentrates on the Velvet, a band, and on the artistic scene that inspired them. In particular, he focuses on their connections to the experimental cinema that boomed in New York. (Streaming on Apple TV+.)
21. What’s the highlight of Petite Maman?
A. Its low cost. B. Its modern style.
C. Its unusual story. D. Its impressive acting.
22. What do Summer of Soul and The Velvet Underground have in common?
A. Being available offline. B. Sharing the same director.
C. Involving music in the 1960s. D. Interviewing contemporary musicians.
23. Which movie involves current issues?
A. Petite Maman. B. Summer of Soul.
C. Bring Your Own Brigade. D. The Velvet Underground.

Bicycle riding has taken the world by storm. Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum (铝) but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. These bicycles are made of British grown ash trees by Welsh maker Andy Dix. His Hay-on-Wye company, Twmpa Frames, is making bikes that are of high performance and environmentally sustainable.
“It’s great to push for more bikes and fewer cars on the road, but there’s no escaping the fact that the bike industry as a whole is pretty energy intensive,” Dix told Cycling Industry, “I’ve always tried to minimize environmental impact in my work. Rather than relying on heavily-processed metals, or layers of plastic that will one day end up in landfill, I’m building bikes from captured carbon, in a process powered by sunlight.”
It took two years to build the prototype (雏形) that was made from ash wood. Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest roads he could find and discovered that it was comfortable, durable, and excellent at absorbing shakes. He put more than 3,000 miles on the bike. Dix explained, “I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. The penny dropped. Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials.”
Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible. Dix said that manufacturing a British tonne of aluminum results in carbon emissions of 4,532 kg while producing a tonne of wood only emits 457 kg. Currently, the cost of a new Twmpa Cycle is out-of-reach for many bicycle riders; but the idea of using sustainable materials like ash trees could start a new cycling revolution that puts the environment first. Helping the environment could be just a pedal away.
24. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The materials for building bikes. B. The driving force for wooden bikes.
C. The problems with cycling industry. D. The process of building wooden bikes.
25. What does the underlined part “The penny dropped” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. The truth came out. B. Money was missing.
C. The bike broke down. D. The efforts were in vain.
26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Logging trees is a wrong practice.
B. Developing sustainable forestry is a must.
C. Carbon emission calls for urgent attention.
D. The wooden bike does more good than harm.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A. Less Carbon, More Sustainable B. Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees
C. No Innovation, No Development D. Amusing? Bike Riding Is Taking off
C
Sewing can be fun and creative. But have you ever thought that a sewing machine can also mean the world to many people around the globe that use it as their main source of income?
When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she decided to found The Sewing Machine Project, an organization that collects donated used machines and redistributes them in remote places like Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Guam, and Kosovo. It also aims to help those in Detroit and New Orleans.
In 2004,when a tsunami (海啸) hit Sri Lanka, Margaret was deeply touched by the story of a particular woman. After the village she lived in was destroyed by the natural disaster, she lost everything, including her sewing machine, her approach to future earnings. This story made Margaret decide to collect used sewing machines and send them to Sri Lanka. After attending a local news program where she presented her idea, she started receiving scores of sewing machines.
The Sewing Machine Project covers a basic yet necessary need of many impoverished people around the world. For them, sewing can be a tool for survival. Whether in a factory or at home, a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities. A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity. After Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005, a community of New Orleans that wears skillfully-made suits for their own traditional festival lost many of their sewing machines. Since then, the non-profit organization has distributed hundreds of machines among the creators of the costumes, helping them maintain their tradition as well as their income.
28. Why does the author raise the question in the first paragraph?
A. To call up readers’ memories. B. To lead up to the project.
C. To stress the role of sewing. D. To introduce sewing machines.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Destruction of the 2004 tsunami. B. The experience of Margaret in 2004.
C. The story of a woman in Sri Lanka. D. Inspiration for the project.
30. What does the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Disabled. B. Exhausted. C. Poor. D. Pessimistic.
31. Why is the community in New Orleans mentioned in the end?
A. To highlight its cultural identity.
B. To prove the importance of keeping traditions.
C. To explain the project’s achievement.
D. To show the project’s contribution to traditions.
D
I love teaching, but from the stand at the front of the room it can be hard to tell if you're having any impact at all. Until one day, you get an email from a former student detailing the influence you had on their life. We tend to believe that others are watching us less, listening to us less, and generally paying less attention to us than they actually are. Psychologist Erica Boothby and her colleagues coined the term the “invisibility cloak illusion (隐身斗篷错觉)” to describe the invisibility we often feel as we go about our daily lives.
In one study, Boothby and her coauthors surveyed students who had been dining with others in a busy campus dining hall. They randomly (随机地) assigned students exiting the dining hall to different conditions. In one condition, the students were asked how much they found themselves noticing or observing the people around them in the dining hall (i.e., their behavior, manners and appearance), how curious they had been about the people around them, and the extent to which they had wondered what was going on inside the heads people around them. Students assigned to another condition were asked how much they thought the other people in the dining hall were noticing or observing them.
Participants' ratings of how much they found themselves observing other people were more than 67 percent higher than participants' ratings of how much they thought other people were observing them. Despite the fact that everyone is busy observing everyone else, we tend to think we are somehow more invisible than the people around us.
This research drives away the wrong idea that in order to get someone to pay attention to you, you have to wave your hands around and shout. Ad executives may need to pull out all the stops in order to grab people's attention, but you don't. You already have it. You are a person, not an ad or a tweet, and people are wired to notice other people. More than that, they are wired to wonder what other people are thinking, and to adjust their own thoughts and behaviors accordingly. What this means is that you are quietly influencing the people around you all the time — without even trying, and often without realizing it.
32. What does the author intend to show by mentioning his experience?
A. He dislikes working as a teacher. B. He knows little about his students.
C. He fails to recognize his influence. D. He has no confidence in his teaching.
33. What did the study try to find out about the students?
A. Ways they could attract people’s attention.
B. Kinds of people they were more likely to notice.
C. The degree they thought they were being observed.
D. Reasons why they noticed some people more easily.
34. How do people adjust their own thoughts and behaviors according to the last paragraph?
A. By observing other’s actions. B. By knowing their own feelings.
C. By showing their own behaviors. D. By understanding others’ thoughts.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. People need to understand each other. B. People focus too much on themselves.
C. People are easily influenced by others. D. People tend to ignore their own influence.

The Last Delivery
There was a rich couple who was throwing a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at a market where everything was of high cost and had a fixed price. They wanted to maintain their high living standards so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it.
After purchasing everything they wanted, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charge for delivering the goods to their home. The old porter quoted a mere $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter, and finally he settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal, so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking about how well they had bargained with the poor porter, paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivered their stuff. They reached their home and an hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband “I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn enough money to feed himself once a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure that, instead of delivering it to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately be back to the market to inquire and then go to the police station to file a complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter but then noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!

A
This year, it felt as if every good movie was also an argument for why movies matter.
D 22. C 23. C
根据Petite Maman (Céline Sciamma)部分的“What’s certain is that the performance of the cast causes maximum emotional impact.(可以肯定的是,演员们的表演给观众带来了最大的情感冲击)”可知,Petite Maman的亮点在于其令人印象深刻的表演。
根据Summer of Soul (Questlove)部分的“This documentary about a series of open-air concerts in Harlem in 1969(这部纪录片讲述了1969年哈莱姆区的一系列露天音乐会)”和The Velvet Underground (Todd Haynes)部分的“Like “Summer of Soul”, this documentary revisits the music of the 1960s in a spirit that is more historical than just recalling the past.(与Summer of Soul一样,这部纪录片以一种不只是回顾过去,更具有历史意义的精神重温了20世纪60年代的音乐)”可知,Summer of Soul和The Velvet Underground之间的共同之处在于它们都涉及20世纪60年代的音乐,故选C。
Bring Your Own Brigade (Lucy Walker)部分的“This documentary about California wildfires of September 2021 is also, almost by accident, an exploration of the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.(这部关于2021年9月加州野火的纪录片也是几乎是偶然的对该国应对Covid-19大流行的探索)”可知,涉及时事的电影是Bring Your Own Brigade,故选C。

Amusing? Bike Riding Is Taking off
B 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据第二段“I’ve always tried to minimize environmental impact in my work. Rather than relying on heavily-processed metals, or layers of plastic that will one day end up in landfill, I’m building bikes from captured carbon, in a process powered by sunlight. (我一直试图在我的工作中尽量减少对环境的影响。我不再依赖于过度加工的金属,或终有一天会被填埋的塑料,而是用碳制造自行车,这个制造过程由阳光驱动。)”可推知,本段中Dix介绍了他用碳和太阳能制造自行车的原因是尽量减少对环境的影响,所以本段主要讲了他制作木制自行车的推动力。故选B项。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段划线句前“Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest roads he could find and discovered that it was comfortable, durable, and excellent at absorbing shakes.( Dix在他能找到的最崎岖的道路上测试了这辆木制自行车,发现它舒适、耐用,并且非常善于减震。)”和“I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. (我在一条颠簸的路上骑着自行车,如果骑上一辆铝制自行车,我会被震得浑身发抖。)”可知,Dix对木质自行车进行了一系列测试,结合划线句后“Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials. (我不仅能用木头做自行车,而且木头比其他材料有固有的优势。)”可知,测试结果令人满意,所以划线句“The penny dropped.”是对测试的总结,结合选项,“The truth came out.(真相大白了)”与划线句意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible.
通读全文,并结合第一段“Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. (自行车通常由钢或铝制成,但现在有一家独特的公司能让树上长出自行车。)”可知,本文介绍了威尔士家具制造商Andy Dix使用英国种植的白蜡树制造自行车,这将减少环境污染,对环境保护有非常重要的意义,B项“Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees(神奇吗?自行车长在树上)”新颖有趣,引出话题,是文章最佳标题。故选B项。
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第二段的“When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she decided to found The Sewing Machine Project, an organization that collects donated used machines and redistributes them in remote places like Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Guam, and Kosovo. (当Margaret Jankowski了解这一点后,她决定成立缝纫机项目,这个组织收集捐赠的旧机器,并将它们重新分发到偏远的地方,如斯里兰卡、危地马拉、关岛和科索沃)”并结合下文内容可知,文章主要讲述了Margaret Jankowski创立了一个公益组织,募集旧缝纫机并重新分配给有需要的人们。由此推知,第一段提出问题的目的是将话题引导这个公益组织。故选B。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段的主要内容,尤其“This story made Margaret decide to collect used sewing machines and send them to Sri Lanka. (这个故事使Margaret决定收集旧缝纫机,并把它们送到斯里兰卡)”可知,本段主要讲述了Margaret成立The Sewing Machine Project的灵感。故选D。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。结合上下文语境可知,下一句的them指代impoverrished people,根据下文“For them, sewing can be a tool for survival. Whether in a factory or at home, a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities. (对他们来说,缝纫是一种生存的工具。无论是在工厂还是在家里,一台缝纫机都可以是通往更光明的财务机会的大门)”可知,缝纫机是他们的生存工具,是通往更光明的财务机会的大门,由此可知句中的“them”是穷人。因此,impoverished意为“贫困的”,与poor同义。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity. After Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005, a community of New Orleans that wears skillfully-made suits for their own traditional festival lost many of their sewing machines. (缝纫机也能让许多人保持他们的文化身份。2005年卡特里娜飓风发生后,新奥尔良一个为自己的传统节日穿着精心制作的西装的社区失去了许多缝纫机)”可知,缝纫机也能让更多人保持他们的文化。由此推知,最后一段提到 New Orleans是为了突出它的文化特色。故选A。
C 33. C 34. D 35. D
根据第一段第二句“Until one day, you get an email from a former student detailing the influence you had on their life. (直到某天你收到之前一位学生的电子邮件,详细描述了你对他们生活的影响。)”可知,在此之前作者没能意识到他对他人的影响。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“Students assigned to another condition were asked how much they thought the other people in the dining hall were noticing or observing them. (在另一种条件下,学生们被问及他们认为餐厅里的其他人注意或观察他们的程度。)”可知,该研究的目的是研究学生们所认为的其他人观察他们的程度。故选C项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后段第四句“More than that, they are wired to wonder what other people are thinking, and to adjust their own thoughts and behaviors accordingly.
Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym._____36_____Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.
____37____For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.
A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on fresh air, sunshine, and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing. _____38_____ In like manner, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.
Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people’s blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem (自尊)._____39_____
Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym._____40_____Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.
A. Spirits are also believed to be positively affected.
B. A green gym uses as little equipment as possible.
C. All forms of green exercise are good for you.
D. Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ.
E. Besides, it usually doesn’t use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym.
F. So riding a bicycle in a forest can be called a type of green exercise.
G. Some point out that many health clubs are constructed to make full use of natural light.
E 37. D 38. F 39. A 40. G
根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym.(绿色运动是一个术语,用于描述在自然环境中进行的任何类型的体育锻炼,而不是在健身俱乐部或健身房中进行锻炼)”可知,文章开头介绍绿色运动不同于在健身房的锻炼,空格处承上启下,以及后文的“Instead”表明空格处的意义与后文相反。
根据下文“For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes. (例如,一些人认为,真正自然的运动体验要求人只穿天然纤维制成的衣服。其他人认为赤脚跑步或步行会更环保,因此比穿鞋跑步或步行更受欢迎)”可知,下文从两个方面举例了两种不同的绿色运动方式。因此空格处总结性说明不同的人对于什么是真正的绿色运动观点不同。D项“人们对什么是真正的绿色运动意见不一”符合语境。故选D。
【38题详解】
根据下文“In like manner, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.(同样,使用标准设备和防护服爬山也将被视为绿色运动)”可知,此处介绍了什么样的锻炼会被视为绿色运动,由“In like manner”可知,空格处也是在介绍绿色运动的类型,而F项中“can be called a type of green exercise”与后文中的“also be considered a green exercise”结构一致,都是在介绍绿色运动的类型,所以F项“因此,在森林里骑自行车可以被称为一种绿色运动”符合语境。
故选A。
根据上文“Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.(并非所有人都认为绿色运动比在健身俱乐部或健身房锻炼更有益)”可知,该段在介绍另一种观点,指出使用健身器材锻炼也有好处,以及下文“Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.(与此同时,健身设备的使用可能会导致更具挑战性的锻炼,这有助于增强心脏和肺部,而在自然环境中进行更简单的锻炼则很难管理)”说明使用健身器材有利于增强心肺功能。

Dear fellow students,
I’m very glad to have the chance to speak on behalf of my class here. Recently, some students have ordered fast food on APPs such as Meituan, Ele me. Their behaviors have violated the school rules so I’m here to restate the restriction that ordering takeout is banned.
Delicious as fast food is, students will lose their balance of diets if they take long-term takeout. Moreover, the source of food can’t be guaranteed since producers add harmful substances to the food for higher profit. What’s more, some thieves may pass themselves off as the delivery man which is a threat to students’ possessions and safety on campus.
In a word, I appeal to everyone to stay away from takeout automatically, which is beneficial to us all.
That’s all! Thank you!

The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our stuff.” She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief!” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly sick and isn’t able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your goods, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Despite falling down, he never forgot his promise and handed me $15, keeping telling me to deliver it as fast as possible.”
Upon hearing that, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “He was hungry, he was poor, but he was truly an honest man,” the husband admitted with a trembling voice. At that, the wife was struck dead with shame, heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible man? Like a child who made a mistake, she had no courage to look into her husband’s eyes. Through all these unexpected things, it eventually dawned on her that honesty has no class and she should respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status.
