A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

With all preparations done, they started to fry bread together. In a flash, sweet smell filled the air in the kitchen. To their delight, the breakfast was a success in the end.
Paragraph 1:
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Eyes opened, the woman heard a harmonious “Happy Mother’s Day” from her twin kids with hot, sweet breakfast before her. Behind the children stood their father. To shed light on the game of the gift, he told the mother the whole story. After learning about what happened, she rose quickly to gaze at the boy’s hand with moved tears rolling down her cheeks. “Thank you, my honey!” said the mother.

Pumpkin (南瓜)carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

Paragraph 1
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Dad was summoned less, it seemed, in expectation of practical help than to make sure he didn't miss out on the spectacle. I heard him propose calling the fire department." Stay tuned," said she'd mentioned she was going to upload the video to Facebook but it was only then I realized she d been filming the whole time. The video cuts before my rescue-Dad got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so Mom could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp.
Paragraph 2
The video was posted on the Monday before Halloween. By the end of that day, it had over 1.000 views. People asked my mom to put it on YouTube, and by Wednesday morning we were getting 5:00 a.m. calls from TV breakfast shows and then the international media-the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went on a youth camp, I was recognized by children I'd never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passersby and trick-or-treaters would and ask, "Which is Rachel's pumpkin?" before taking selfies with it.

“Daddy, I want to ask your permission to study in America,” I said to my father a few months before my graduation from high school. But hardly before I finished, he shouted, “No!”
“But why?” I replied. “If you are worried about money, it will be OK since I have got a scholarship...”
But he refused to give in. At the moment, I didn’t know what to say. For more than two years, I had been working very hard to pass all the necessary examinations. I had not told my father because I wanted to give him a pleasant surprise. I thought he would be very proud of me because it was many of my classmates’ parents’ dream to send their children to study abroad.
“Why do I have to get your permission? I am already 18 and I’m not a kid anymore,” I said angrily and rushed to my bedroom, shutting the door violently. Blinded by anger, I found that I could not stay at my hometown any longer. Late that night, I slipped out of the house and decided to take the bus to the railway station to start my own life as far away from my home as possible.
The bus stop was just two blocks away from my home. When I got there, I found that I forgot to take any money with me and missed the last bus. I did not want to go back home, so I sat down on the bench and closed my eyes to have a break.
Suddenly, I was woken up by my phone. I looked around and found the road was deserted and the street was so quiet that I regretted that I had left home in such a hurry. I picked up the phone and answered the phone even without checking the number.
“Have you had a good sleep? It’s going to rain. Shall we go home now?”

The first time we set eyes on the beautiful dress “Big Red”, Father, Mother and I were walking slowly through the freshly fallen snow on our way to Hubble's Hardware store on Main Street.
The colorfully decorated window display held the best toys ever and some other things. And they were all placed pleasantly beneath the breathtaking dress of Big Red. Mother's eyes were glued to the massive flame of red satin(绸缎), dotted with twinkling stars.
“My goodness,” she managed to say in dreamlike wonder. “Would you just look at that dress!” Then, totally out of character, Mother unexpectedly danced on the slippery sidewalk. Beneath the heavy, grey wool coat that she had worn every winter for as long as I could remember, Mother lost her balance and fell clumsily. Father quickly caught her.
Her cheeks redder than usual, Mother blamed dad for laughing. “Oh, stop that!” she ordered, as my father swept the snow from her coat. “What a silly dress to be displayed there in the window of Eaton's!” she shook her head in disbelief. “Who on earth would want such a brightly-colored dress? It is too expensive.” As we continued to walk down the street, Mother turned back for one more look. “My goodness! You'd think they'd display something that a person could use!”
Christmas was around the corner and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother was not the one to wish for, or spend money on things that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this,” she'd always say, or,“There are things we need more than that.”
Father, on the other hand, liked to buy things whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he'd get a scolding for his occasional spending like this, but it was all done with the best intention.
On our last trip to town before Christmas, we were driving up Main Street when Mother suddenly exclaimed in surprise,“Would you just look at that!” She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's.“That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief.“It's actually gone.”

根据阅读材料第二段中的 "Mother's eyes were glued to..." 根据阅读材料第六段中的 "liked to buy things whenever the budget allowed" "with the best intention" 可知,作者的父亲喜欢在预算允许的时候出于好意买东西。

Dad looked quickly and smiled,“Yes, it is not there!”“But who would like to buy that silly dress, which is neither practical nor cheap?”Mom marveled(v.感到惊奇), but meanwhile both Father and I could discern(vt.辨别;识别;) an inexplicable but conspicuous disappointment crept over her face (她的脸上流露出一种令人费解但显而易见的失望).“Some romantic, reserved loving man might buy that for his wife.”Father winked slyly(狡黠地眨眼) at Mom and me from the rear mirror as if he were the secretive devoting husband he depicted.
I'll never forget that Christmas morning when Father handed Mother a box. “Ta da, the most silly gift for my princess!”Father exclaimed, eyeing at his wife in a loving and expectant way(用带着爱意和期待的眼神看着他的妻子). Mother, too stunned to speak(惊愕地说不出话来), received the box with her trembling hands. Her palms sweating, throat tightening(掌心冒汗,喉咙发紧), Mother's hand slided through the red satin and lingered at the twinkling stars.“Oh, Tom, you shouldn't have been that extravagant (adj.奢侈的).”“No, baby, you deserve the highest honor and my passionate love on this Special Christmas.”
