66.Dear Peter,
It's great to hear that you are interested in my high school life. Now, let me share with you how my first semester of high school went.
High school has been quite challenging but also exciting. I’ve made new friends and we often study together, which helps us overcome difficulties. As for my plans for the winter vacation, I am looking forward to a relaxing break. I plan to spend quality time with my family, catch up on some reading, and improve my English skills by watching movies and reading English books.
Thank you so much for your care and concern. I really appreciate it. I hope everything is going well for you too.
Yours,
Li Hua

With a giant tear in her eye, the little girl looked up at him. She forced a smile, murmuring “Thank you” and made her way to the door. Suddenly, Pappy thought of his daughter. Driven by a sense of sympathy, Pappy called out, “How much have you got to spend?” Hearing this, the little girl counted money in her purse—two dollars altogether. After thinking for a few seconds, Pappy announced, “Today is Christmas Day and this is your lucky day. The bell costs exactly two dollars.” The child danced out with great joy, holding the special bell in her hand.
Later that evening when Pappy was closing up the shop, he heard a familiar ringing. He couldn’t believe his ears. The girl stood in the doorway, ringing the bell happily. Feeling puzzled, Pappy got close to her and asked, “Have you changed your mind, Miss?” “ No. My Momma says the present is for you.” explained the little girl. Then, her mother stepped in. Tears filling her eyes, she cried out cheerfully, “Hello, Dad.”

Mathea Allansmith isn’t your typical grandmother. She’s the oldest woman in the world to have completed a marathon. She was 92 years 194 days old when she crossed the finish line at the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, setting the record for the oldest female to complete a marathon.
Mathea, now 94, of Koloa, Hawaii, USA, stays in shape all year round by running seven days a week, no matter what the weather is. Come rain or shine, she covers 36 miles every week, even when she’s on holiday. The retired doctor didn’t take up running until she was 46 years old —after a friend suggested running two miles per day.
“The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite marathon mainly because it doesn’t close the gate at a certain time, which allows even the slowest runner to finish the race,” she said. “It’s one of the best races. Fantastic registration (注册), set-up and management make it a joy to run the race.”
Mathea, who doesn’t allow her age to slow her down, thinks she is the happiest person when she’s on the road. She enjoys running for miles and waving and saying hello to the people she passes. To stay in shape, Mathea keeps a steady training routine (惯例) . “I train all year round but increase the mileage 18 weeks before a marathon,” she said.
Mathea said it was her career as a doctor that allowed her to understand how her body and mind respond to diet and exercise. “I see the direct relation between moving and health,” she said. “It is important to reduce stress rather than ignoring it without a plan on how to do so. Of course, exercise of any kind is a natural stress reducer.”
Mathea thought getting through the finish line and winning a Guinness World Record title was the excitement of her life. “My family completely surprised me after the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, in which I achieved the world record, by wearing matching T-shirts stating my achievements,” she said.
24.What do we know about Mathea from the first two paragraphs?
A.She used to be in poor health.
B.She is the oldest to win a marathon.
C.She runs daily regardless of the weather.
D.She was encouraged by her patient to run.
25.Why is Mathea keen on the Honolulu Marathon?
A.It gives winners the best awards.
B.It provides runners with quality service..
C.It has no time limit for runners to finish.
D.It allows runners to set a world record easily.
26.What led to Mathea’s understanding of the connection between moving and health?
A.Her professional experience. B.Her training courses.
C.Her views on stress in life. D.Her hobby from young.
27.What message does Mathea’s story deliver?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Interest is the best teacher.
C.Age is no barrier to success.
D.Ups and downs make one strong.
C
A famous company’s leader believes there’s only one way to know if you truly understand a subject: Can you explain it to a child? But the man with lifelong love of math recently found it didn’t always go well when he tried explaining mathematical concepts(概念)to his then-school-aged children.
He thinks that learning with kids to see what’s puzzling to them and what’s easy for them are the final test of whether you know a topic—whether you can explain it.
Teachers often ask students to give a statement on a subject to show that they understand it. Studies show that people are more likely to remember and understand concepts they’ve learned after explaining them to someone else or even to themselves. That means you can testyour own knowledge in a subject simply by trying to teach it to a friend,to see both how much information you’ve kept and how well you actually understand its concepts. If they successfully learn from you, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right track.
The leader, who studied math and computer science at university, noted that while hewas personally good at math as a high school student, he had trouble passing that enthusiasm(热情)to his three kids.
He loves doing math, but in the past his younger daughter would always say that he made it so complicated (复杂的) and he didn’t need to explain this to her. Because she just wanted to know the answer.
Today, his three children are all in their 20s.While they may not have enjoyed the math lessons, he says that one of his favorite things is teaching calculus(微积分)to the kids. There are a few very difficult concepts in calculus. He must explain why calculus is so important and why calculus has those funny symbols. It’s crazy and it’s probably the thing he enjoys the most.
28.What happened to the leader recently?
A.He explained Chinese well.
B.He developed his lifelong love of math.
C.He met a challenge in playing with his kids.
D.He had trouble explaining mathematical concepts to his kids.
29.What does the author encourage people to do in paragraph 3?
A.Communicate with others actively.
B.Build relationship with others.
C.Manage to describe themselves.
D.Know about their own learning by teaching others.
30.What did the leader’s younger daughter care about?
A.Describing an example. B.Learning with her father.
C.Getting the final answer. D.Keeping enthusiasm high.
31.What does the leader think of his teaching calculus to his children?
A.It brings him happiness. B.It helps his kids grow.
C.It gives him a lesson. D.It improves his maths.
D
In our human-centric view, the ability to shoot ink or change colors may seem odd, but you know what’s really odd? Menopause (更年期). You can count species other than humans known to experience and outlive menopause on one hand. Only Oracs (虎鲸) and some whale populations have females that live long past their reproductive years to become grandmothers. But a new, landmark study confirms that at least one population of chimpanzees can now be added to the list.
The discovery comes as the result of 21 years’ worth of observing the Ngogo community of wild chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Studying urine from 66 Ngogo females, aged 14 to 67, showed that their hormone levels changed after approaching 50, confirming they were in menopause. Interestingly, 50 is also the age when many people begin to experience menopause. “It’s really cool to finally have that piece of the puzzle come into place,” says Catherine Hobaiter, a primatologist who was not part of the new study.
But Catherine points out that the Ngogo community lives in a chimp paradise: the resource-rich, well-protected Kibale National Park that also lacks leopards, their main predator. And because the Noggo community is found in the heart of the park, its only neighbors are other chimps — not humans who can expose chimpanzees to viruses that have devastated other communities. “The Ngogo population may be an outlier (局外人) when it comes to the rest of the species,” she cautions.
And there is a question concerning “the grandmother effect”, according to which a grandmother has a decidedly beneficial effect on her children and grandchildren. Chimpanzees do not form long-term pair-bonds and females leave in search of new communities when they reach maturity, which means grandmother chimpanzees likely don’t know who their grandchildren are in the same way humans or even orcas do. What they do after the menopause remains a question of interest. “And that’s all future work to be done.” said Catherine.
32.What can be learned about menopause?
A.It is rare among animals. B.It is unique to human beings.
C.It just occurs at the age of 50. D.It is experienced only by females.
33.What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Scientist have found the solution to menopause.
B.What happens to the 66 Ngogo females remains a puzzle.
C.There is a puzzle whether chimpanzee females experience menopause.
D.The latest discovery casts new light on the puzzle of animal menopause.
34.Why does Catherine mention the living situation of the Ngogo community?
A.To stress the importance of protecting chimpanzees from viruses.
B.To remind researchers of the potential limitation of the new study.
C.To prove that Ngogo chimpanzees are perfect subjects of the study.
D.To argue that the discovery of the new study is completely groundless.
35.How is the last paragraph developed?
A.By offering a definition. B.By drawing a conclusion.
C.By presenting relevant facts. D.By giving examples and opinions.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy’s voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”
“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”
Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.
“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”
Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don’t think so.”
In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

M: Oh, Alice, there’s no doubt that it is a plane. It’s the most comfortable and you get treated very well. Your luggage gets taken care of.
W: I can’t say I like it. Actually I think the biggest disadvantage in air travel is that your luggage can disappear and be sent all over the world.
M: Well, not in my experience. Some people may have the long wait, looking at the board and waiting for their flight. But I’m a fan. What’s your favorite means of transportation?
W: Well, I used to like taking a bus best. It’s flexible and cheap. But it is not always reliable form of transportation. Now I’m a great fan of rail travel. I’ve got a rail card and it lets me go wherever I want.
M: But it’s slow.
W: Yes, but you’d hardly want to fly for a very short distance. My husband, Jeff, is a believer in exercise. He cycles everywhere. I know sometimes he’s very tired but he’s pretty fit.
M: I was just going to say how cold he’d feel and wet on cold, rainy days.

【答案】24.C 25.C 26.A 27.C

根据文章第三段““The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite marathon mainly because it doesn’t close the gate at a certain time, which allows even the slowest runner to finish the race,” she said. (她说:“Honolulu马拉松是我最喜欢的马拉松,主要是因为它没有在特定的时间关闭大门,这使得即使是最慢的运动员也能完成比赛。”)”可知,她喜欢Honolulu马拉松的原因是因为该马拉松比赛没有时间限制。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Mathea said it was her career as a doctor that allowed her to understand how her body and mind respond to diet and exercise. “I see the direct relation between moving and health,” she said. “It is important to reduce stress rather than ignoring it without a plan on how to do so. Of course, exercise of any kind is a natural stress reducer.” (Mathea说,她的医生职业生涯让她了解了自己的身心对饮食和运动的反应。“我看到了运动和健康之间的直接关系,”她说。“重要的是要减轻压力,而不是在没有计划的情况下忽视它。当然,任何形式的锻炼都是自然的减压方式。”)”可知,Mathea的医生职业生涯使她对运动和健康之间的关系有了全新的理解。故选A。

31.What does the leader think of his teaching calculus to his children?
A.It brings him happiness. B.It helps his kids grow.
C.It gives him a lesson. D.It improves his maths.

根据第一段的“But the man with lifelong love of math recently found it didn’t always go well when he tried explaining mathematical concepts(概念)to his then-school-aged children.(但这位毕生热爱数学的人最近发现,当他试图向当时还在上学的孩子们解释数学概念时,并不总是很顺利。)”
根据第三段内容“Studies show that people are more likely to remember and understand concepts they’ve learned after explaining them to someone else or even to themselves. That means you can test your own knowledge in a subject simply by trying to teach it to a friend, to see both how much information you’ve kept and how well you actually understand its concepts. If they successfully learn from you, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right track.(研究表明,人们在向别人甚至自己解释后,更有可能记住和理解他们所学到的概念。这意味着你可以通过简单地把某一学科的知识教给朋友来测试你自己的知识,看看你掌握了多少信息,以及你对概念的实际理解程度。如果他们成功地向你学习,这是一个好迹象,表明你走在正确的道路上。)”可知,作者鼓励通过教别人了解自己的学习。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“He loves doing math, but in the past his younger daughter would always say that he made it so complicated(复杂的)and he didn’t need to explain this to her. Because she just wanted to know the answer.(他喜欢做数学,但在过去,他的小女儿总是说他把数学弄得那么复杂,他不需要向她解释。因为她只是想知道答案。)”可知,作者的小女儿在乎的只是最终的答案。故选C。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段的“he says that one of his favorite things is teaching calculus(微积分)to the kids. There are a few very difficult concepts in calculus. He must explain why calculus is so important and why calculus has those funny symbols. It’s crazy and it’s probably the thing he enjoys the most.(他说他最喜欢的事情之一就是教孩子们微积分。微积分中有几个非常难的概念。他必须解释为什么微积分如此重要,为什么微积分有那些有趣的符号。这太疯狂了,这可能是他最喜欢的事情。)”可知,这个领导人认为教孩子们微积分给他带来快乐。故选A。
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B 35.C
根据第一段中“You can count species other than humans known to experience and outlive menopause on one hand. (除了人类之外,你可以用一只手来计算经历并度过更年期的物种)”可知,更年期在动物是很少见的。故选A。
根据划线词前面的内容“Studying urine from 66 Ngogo females, aged 14 to 67, showed that their hormone levels changed after approaching 50, confirming they were in menopause. Interestingly, 50 is also the age when many people begin to experience menopause.( 研究了66名年龄在14岁至67岁之间的Ngogo女性黑猩猩的尿液,发现它们的激素水平在接近50岁时发生了变化,证实它们已进入更年期。有趣的是,50岁也是许多人开始经历更年期的年龄)”可知,经过了多年的研究,如今已经证实的是乌干达的Ngogo野生黑猩猩也经历着更年期即确定了该研究的发现结果。由此可知,划线句与D选项“The latest discovery casts new light on the puzzle of animal menopause.(这一最新发现为解开动物更年期之谜提供了新的线索)”意思相近,符合题意。故选D。
根据倒数第二段中“But Catherine points out that the Ngogo community lives in a chimp paradise: the resource-rich, well-protected Kibale National Park that also lacks leopards, their main predator. (但凯瑟琳指出,Ngogo社区生活在黑猩猩的天堂:资源丰富、保护良好的基巴莱国家公园,那里也没有豹子,豹子是它们的主要捕食者)”以及本段中““The Ngogo population may be an outlier (局外人) when it comes to the rest of the species,” she cautions.( 她警告说:“与其他物种相比,Ngogo种群可能是一个例外。”)”
根据最后一段中“And there is a question concerning “the grandmother effect”, according to which a grandmother has a decidedly beneficial effect on her children and grandchildren. Chimpanzees do not form long-term pair-bonds and females leave in search of new communities when they reach maturity, which means grandmother chimpanzees likely don’t know who their grandchildren are in the same way humans or even orcas do.

如:make one’s way to;think of;count;with great joy;get close to等高级词汇;The child danced out with great joy, holding the special bell in her hand.
