As the first African American woman to receive a medical degree in America, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler challenged the prejudice that prevented African Americans and women from following medical careers.
Born in 1831 in Christiana, Delaware, Crumpler spent her childhood in Pennsylvania with an aunt, who frequently cared for sick neighbors, and Crumpler went with her on these trips. In her book published in 1883, Crumpler wrote, “Having been raised by a kind aunt, whose usefulness to the sick was continually sought, I early developed a liking for medicine, and sought every opportunity to be in a position to relieve the sufferings of others.”
In 1852, Crumpler moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts, to begin her medical career as a nurse. In the early 1850s, there was no formal school where one could become licensed to practice nursing. Even so, Crumpler assisted several doctors in Boston for eight years. They in turn supported her application to the New England Female Medical College, where she was awarded a state- funded scholarship.
Crumpler worked hard at her studies but had to take a leave of absence after two years to attend to her sick husband, who unfortunately passed away in 1863. Months later, Crumpler returned to complete her final term but was nearly refused after some faculty members (教员) expressed worry regarding the amount of time it was taking her to complete her coursework and were hesitant to let her come back. Luckily, with several of the school’s sponsors supporting her, Crumpler finally received a “Doctress of Medicine” from college, and began seeing patients in and around her house, treating them regardless of their ability to pay.
In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published a book based on journal notes she kept during her years of practice. A Book of Medical Discourses, specifically aimed at women and the care of their children, is believed to be the first medical text written by an African American author. Scientific American describes it as the forerunner of the famous What to Expect When You’ re Expecting (1984).
4. What inspired Crumpler to take up medicine?
A. The influence of her aunt. B. The desire to help the poor.
C. Her family’s encouragement. D. The doctors’ financial support.
5. Which of the following can best describe Crumpler?
A. Humorous and easygoing. B. Caring and determined.
C. Adventurous and sensitive. D. Optimistic and honest.
6. Why did some teachers attempt to reject Crumpler’s returning to school?
A. Her family couldn’t afford her education. B. She failed to follow the school regulations.
C. They felt negative about her determination. D. They doubted her ability to finish her study.
7. What do people think of Crumpler’s book according to the last paragraph?
A. Inspiring but unrealistic. B. Accessible and interesting.
C. Educational but complicated. D. Groundbreaking and practical.

In Florida, rancher (农场主) Jim Strickland can see his cows at any time, day or night. To do this, all he needs is his phone. Based on GPS technology, Strickland uses virtual fencing to watch and control the movements of his animals.
Virtual fencing uses radio signals to make an invisible fence. Each animal wears a collar (颈圈) around its neck. The collar has a radio signal receiver and a GPS device that shows the animal’s location. The signals come from nearby mobile phone towers or base stations that can be moved using a small truck. Ranchers train livestock (牲畜) to connect a sound with a small electric shock. When an animal gets close to a virtual fence, its collar makes a warning sound. If the animal moves even closer to the fence, it receives a shock. In this way, livestock quickly learn to stay away from the fence. Ranchers can change the virtual fence boundaries quickly by using a phone App or computer. And livestock quickly learn the new boundaries.
By using virtual fencing, Strickland can remotely move his cows from one area to another and watch for animals that may be having problems. For example, if the system shows that a cow has not moved for many hours, it may be sick or injured. Virtual fencing can also help control grazing (放牧). William Burnidge, Deputy Director of TNC, an environmental non- profit organization, said that by changing fence boundaries, the systems prevent animals from eating too many plants within one area, which helps plants grow again.
An animal’s collar can cost $ 50 or even more annually. Last year, the Bezos Earth Fund awarded$ 9.9 million to Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to develop cost- effective virtual fencing. The institution has outlined a plan to evaluate the effect of this technology in less- developed areas. In certain regions, Burnidge was aware of the significant role played by numerous workers in monitoring and caring for livestock, thus raising concerns that virtual fencing could result in unemployment.
Still, Burnidge said that many people wanted to learn more about the technology. “I’ve never seen anything comparable to the amount of interest,” he said.
8. What is the function of the collars?
A. To track the location of the movable towers.
B. To send signals to the nearby base stations.
C. To prevent animals from crossing the boundaries.
D. To automatically adjust the borders of the fence.
9. What is the benefit of using virtual fencing?
A. It protects animals from diseases. B. It promotes sustainable grazing.
C. It makes high profits for ranchers. D. It helps plants grow better.
10. What worried Burnidge?
A. A collar cost too much money. B. It was hard to test the technology.
C. Livestock were left uncared. D. Virtual fencing could cause job loss.
11. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Virtual Fencing Changes the Way of Grazing B. Grazing Faces Challenges in Some Areas
C. Magical Collars Do Good to the Environment D. Gps Technology Is Widely Used in Grazing
D
When a new product totally fails, companies typically try to move on as quickly as possible and put all of their energies into developing fresh ideas that they hope will catch on.
But the Museum of Failure never forgets. This travelling exhibition (展览), which was first launched in Sweden in 2017, arrived in New York City in 2023. It is designed by Samuel West, a psychologist who specializes in organizational science.
He hopes it will help normalize the concept of failure, which he sees as a good learning opportunity. “My research is focused on helping organizations to be more innovative,” says West. “And one of the big difficulties in innovation is the fear of failure.”
Indeed, many companies are unwilling to show their failures to the world. When West first began putting together the exhibition, he had to find the failed products on eBay and Craigslist because “nobody wanted to have anything to do with this”.
However, in this travelling exhibition, when people see big well-known brands (品牌) and companies that have extreme amounts of money and experience still fail when trying new things, they may say, “As ‘big boys’ can fail, why can’t we?” People then try something new, accept the level of risk that comes with it and learn from it if the new thing fails.
West hopes to stress that failure usually isn’t as bad or scary as many imagine. “You fail, but you can reflect, build on your new thoughts, try a different method and come back again with something better. Simply trying again and again without modifying is not enough,” he adds.
In fact, many well-known brands featured in the Museum of Failure haven’t let one or two failures stand in their way. Oreo has made plenty of delicious new flavors; though Crystal Pepsi failed, PepsiCo is still popular among customers. Other notable examples of serious failures include Bic for Her pens, Colgate’s frozen dinner, and a “hula chair” for exercise.
12. What does Samuel West intend to do by putting on the exhibition?
A. To create a fun viewing experience.
B. To collect comments on failed products.
C. To tell the stories of unsuccessful businessmen.
D. To encourage people to accept and learn from failure.
13. How will people most likely feel while visiting the travelling exhibition?
A. Scared and puzzled. B. Surprised and curious.
C Relaxed and inspired. D. Discouraged and worried.
14. Which can best replace the underlined word “modifying” in paragraph 6?
A. Expanding. B. Adapting. C. Admitting. D. Continuing.
15. Why does the author mention some famous brands in the last paragraph?
A. To show failure can lead to creativity and success.
B. To explain companies are careful with new designs.
C. To prove popular inventions are based on real needs.
D. To stress famous brands are more likely to take risks.

Micro-expressions are fleeting (短暂的) facial expressions that flash across our faces in less than a second, often revealing emotions we try to hide. ____16____ Although they are difficult to detect, they can be a powerful tool for understanding the emotions of others.
Known as the “windows to the soul”, the eyes are crucial for reading micro-expressions. Rapid blinking indicates anxiety or discomfort. In contrast, a lack of blinking suggests an effort to control emotions. ____17____ For example, raised and arched eyebrows can indicate surprise while lowered and knitted eyebrows can indicate anger, sadness or fear.
____18____ A dropped jaw often signals surprise, while an open mouth could indicate fear. If one side of the mouth is raised, it could indicate hatred or contempt (蔑视). A smile with upturned corners usually conveys happiness, but a smile that doesn’t reach the eyes could be masking deeper emotions. A down-turned corner of the mouth often conveys sadness.
As well as basic facial expressions, there are other subtle clues to look out for. Lip biting could be a sign of anxiety, while pursed lips could indicate disgust. ____19____ Interpreting micro-expressions is not a natural skill. ____20____ By learning to recognize and interpret these subtle expressions, we can gain a deeper insight into the emotions of those around us, fostering better communication and empathy.
A. It takes practice and keen observation.
B. Emotions can also be conveyed through smiles.

D. Learning to read these micro-expressions is of great importance.

Being a Champion
On a chilly November morning, Kiera stood at the start line of the North East Regional Junior Olympic Cross Country race, her arms covered in goose bumps (鸡皮疙瘩). The sea of competitors in their high-tech uniforms made her feel like an amateur among experts. She recalled her first race — just a small meet against two middle school teams where she finished 10th. How could she hope to be in the top 10 today?
The announcer’s voice echoed, calling the runners to the line. The air was tense as the women took their positions. Kiera’s heart pounded. She felt her heart growing heavier as self-doubt mounted in her mind.
The gun fired and the crowd of women dashed forward. Kiera found herself being swallowed up by the pack, her lungs burning and her legs pumping fiercely to keep up. But then she saw her parents on the sidelines, and their cheers removed her doubts.
“You can do it, kiddo!” her dad shouted.
“Run your own race, champ!” her mum encouraged.
Their words lit Kiera’s spirit. “I gotta run MY race.” With each stride (大步), her confidence grew. Her breathing fell into rhythm with her steps, her body moved with newfound lightness, and she willed herself forward.
She flew past the other runners, her spirit soaring. By the time she reached the woods, she was in the lead, her feet dancing over the roots with ease. Lost in the rhythm of the race, Kiera was surprised to hear the voice of the announcer, closer than she expected. She sprinted (冲刺) down the final mile, her eyes glued to the clock. As she crossed the finish line, it read 11:22. “A good time, but what place did I get?”
She scanned the crowd, counting the women in front of her. Five, six, seven... Her heart sank as she realized she might have missed the top 10.
Her parents found her. “Great job!” her father said encouragingly. “Was I top 10?” Kiera asked hopefully. Before they replied, the digital scoreboard displayed the results of the top finishers one by one. Kiera held her breath and waited.

A To track the location of the movable towers.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The collar has a radio signal receiver and a GPS device that shows the animal’s location.
根据文章第三段“William Burnidge, Deputy Director of TNC, an environmental non- profit organization, said that by changing fence boundaries, the systems prevent animals from eating too many plants within one area, which helps plants grow again. (环保非营利组织大自然保护协会 (TNC) 的副主任威廉·伯尼奇 (William Burnidge) 表示,通过改变围栏的边界,这些系统可以防止动物在同一个区域内吃掉太多植物,从而有助于植物再次生长。)”可知,使用虚拟围栏可以防止动物在同一个区域内吃太多植物,这有助于植物再次生长,从而促进可持续放牧。因此,使用虚拟围栏的好处是促进可持续放牧。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“In certain regions, Burnidge was aware of the significant role played by numerous workers in monitoring and caring for livestock, thus raising concerns that virtual fencing could result in unemployment. (在某些地区,伯尼奇意识到许多工人在监测和照顾牲畜方面发挥着重要作用,因此他担心虚拟围栏可能会导致失业。)”可知,Burnidge担心虚拟围栏可能导致失业。故选D。

C. Relaxed and inspired.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A
【解析】

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“He hopes it will help normalize the concept of failure, which he sees as a good learning opportunity.(他希望这将有助于使失败的概念正常化,他认为这是一个很好的学习机会)”可知,Samuel West举办这个展览是为了鼓励人们接受失败并从失败中学习。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“However, in this travelling exhibition, when people see big well-known brands (品牌) and companies that have extreme amounts of money and experience still fail when trying new things, they may say, “As ‘big boys’ can fail, why can’t we?” People then try something new, accept the level of risk that comes with it and learn from it if the new thing fails.(然而,在这个巡回展览中,当人们看到大的知名品牌和拥有大量资金和经验的公司在尝试新事物时仍然失败时,他们可能会说:“既然‘大人物’可以失败,我们为什么不能呢?”然后,人们尝试新事物,接受随之而来的风险,并在新事物失败时从中吸取教训)”可推知,参观这个展览的人们会感到放松并受到启发。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“You fail, but you can reflect, build on your new thoughts, try a different method and come back again with something better.(你失败了,但你可以反思,建立你新想法,尝试不同的方法,然后带着更好的东西回来)”可知,作者提倡失败后及时反思,尝试新方法,创造出更好的产品。因此,作者强调只是反复尝试却没有改进是不够的。由此可推知,画线词modifying意为“调整”,与B项意思相近。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In fact, many well-known brands featured in the Museum of Failure haven’t let one or two failures stand in their way. Oreo has made plenty of delicious new flavors; though Crystal Pepsi failed, PepsiCo is still popular among customers. Other notable examples of serious failures include Bic for Her pens, Colgate’s frozen dinner, and a “hula chair” for exercise.(事实上,许多入选失败博物馆的知名品牌并没有让一两次失败阻碍他们前进的道路。奥利奥推出了许多美味的新口味;虽然水晶百事失败了,但百事公司仍然受到顾客的欢迎。其他值得注意的严重失败的例子包括Bic for Her钢笔,高露洁的冷冻晚餐,以及用于锻炼的“呼啦椅”)”可推知,作者提到一些著名品牌是为了表明失败可以促进创造力和成功。故选A。

【答案】One possible version:
But as the unfamiliar names piled up, reality dawned on her — 12th place. Tears welled in Kiera’s eyes. She couldn’t speak; words would break the dam of her emotions, and the silence around her grew, a striking contrast to the busy surroundings. Finally, Kiera broke the silence. “I didn’t qualify,” she whispered, her voice almost drowned out by the noise. Her parents took a sharp breath, ready for the emotional storm. But Kiera surprised them. “But I did my best. I guess now I have another year to train, another chance to get better at racing next year.”
The tension on her parents’ faces eased, their smiles returning. “We’re so proud of you. You’re such a champion no matter what the scoreboard says,” her mother said, her voice filled with pride. Her father nodded, his eyes shining. Kiera managed a smile, not quite agreeing but no longer in denial. Though she hadn’t qualified this time, Kiera knew she wouldn’t stop running. Each step was a step closer to her dream, and with every race, she grew stronger, wiser, and more determined. Her parents held their beloved daughter tightly, convinced that who never gives in is a true champion.
