Everyone has that special person in their lives who act s like a role model to them. For many of us, including me, that person is our own mother. But in my case, there is another person who is my perfect mentor(导师) and friend. It’s Nana, my mum’s father.
My Nana, since I was a kid, brought me up in the most unforgettable way possible, babying me by buying toys and presenting me with sweets and candies constantly and spending time with me, which created an everlasting bond between us.
Fast-forward a couple of years, when I began to outgrow these toys or candies, Nana didn’t just stop there. He began taking me almost every weekend to the local club where he had a membership. It meant the world to me as I could do absolutely whatever I pleased there. Other than that, Nana would take me to many parks, especially when there was a flower show on or something of that sort. He was very enthusiastic about nature and spent hours around it, enjoying what it had to offer.
Anyhow, his immense love didn’t end there...
My Nana had grown older. Now he finds it hard to drive and walk too much, so he prefers to stay at home. What I do now is to try to give him company and talk to him mainly about his travels at sea, as he was a sailor, and the various countries he visited and how he spent his early years and about my school, etc.
I’ll never be able to repay my Nana for all the kindness and comfort he gave to me. Thank you, Nana, from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done for me.
24. For most people, who would set an example to them in their lives?
A. Mother. B. Father. C. Grandpa. D. Teachers.
25. What does the underlined word “outgrow” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Grow too quickly than others to play.
B. Change and no longer think in that way.
C. Grow too big to be able to fit into them.
D. Lose interest in something as someone gets older.
26. What was Nana extremely interested in?
A. Sports cars. B. Various plants.
C. Children’s toys. D. Different local clubs.
27. How does the writer repay her old Nana?
A. By doing what he did at early years. B. By traveling with him behind the wheel.
C. By companying and chatting with him. D. By sending him gifts for what he did for her.

Many English expressions and idioms use parts of the body to describe things unrelated to the body. For example, a green thumb means to be good at growing vegetables, flowers and other plants. And if something costs an arm and a leg, it is very expensive.
Well, today, we talk about your shoulder. This part connects your arm to your body. And the shoulder finds its way into many expressions.
For starters, let’s talk about “shoulder” as a verb. If you shoulder something, you accept it as your responsibility; you give support, or you take the blame.
And this is a great place to start. This idea of taking responsibility and giving support leads us to some other “shoulder” expressions. For example, during difficult times in our lives, it is often necessary to have a shoulder to lean(倚靠) on or a shoulder to cry on. When we lean on someone’s shoulder, we ask for their help. When we cry on someone’s shoulder, they are there for support. We call people who give us a shoulder to lean on or cry on our “support system”.
There is another way our shoulders give us support. If you are successful in your career but others have come before you, you can say you are standing on the shoulders of giants. This means you have not succeeded on your own. You have learned from others in the same field who had earlier successes.
Now, from our shoulders, let’s move up to our heads. Our heads are centered between our shoulders. So, it should not be surprising that we have a couple of expressions that use both.
If you have a good head on your shoulders, you are thoughtful and smart and you often achieve success in life. This means you are much better than those in a similar field or competition.
28. Which expression shows that someone pays too much money?
A. You cry on a shoulder. B. You spend an arm and a leg.
C. You need a green thumb. D. You shoulder the responsibility.
29. Who can be called your “support system” when you are in trouble?
A. The person succeeding in life on his own.
B. The person lending you a shoulder to cry on.
C. The person standing on the shoulders of giants.
D. The person helping you succeed in the special field.
30. What is a man having a good head on his shoulders like?
A. He looks very handsome. B. He is healthy and positive.
C. He is wise and thoughtful. D. He can overcome all the difficulties.
31. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To show how to learn some English expressions.
B. To encourage people to study English expressions.
C. To tell us the kinds of English expressions and idioms.
D. To share some expressions about our head and shoulders.
D
A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to cleanup floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775, 660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans again, ”said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
32. What do we know about Interceptor?
A. It needs solar power to work. B. It is mainly used in the oceans.
C. It is being under test. D. It can help sort waste.
33. What does “the tap” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. The waste. B. The oceans.
C. The machines. D. The rivers.
34. What’s the function of the device’s nose?
A. To ensure the device’s safety. B. To send operators text messages.
C. To empty the waste. D. To serve as containers.
35. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A magazine.
C. A diary. D. A guidebook.

W: Of course. Here you are.
Text 2
W: Such a nice day! I’d like to go hiking to breathe the fresh air in the countryside.
M: Well, Maria. I’m afraid I can’t go with you because of my work. If you’re interested, I can give you the phone number of my hiking club.
Text 3
M: Where were you at noon? I’ve been waiting for you here until now.
W: I’m sorry. I was reading a novel in the library and didn’t notice the time.
M: You have a bad memory! So can we order some food now? I am so hungry.
Text 4
W: Tom, what’s the special thing about Europeans? Did you notice that when you were
in Europe?

as tomatoes and cucumbers, to go with their other breakfast choices.
W: Do they eat bread?
M: Yes.
Text 5
M: Another piece of cake?
W: No, thanks. I’m on a diet.
M: Please do. You’ve hardly eaten anything.
W: It’s so delicious. But I don’t think I should.
Text 6
M: Hi, Mary. What do you think of the England-Italy football match yesterday?
W: Well, I missed it.
M: What a pity! It was really great. Much better than the swimming competition last
weekend.
W: Oh, really? I wanted to watch the football match after the tennis match finished. But my parents had visitors, so I had to turn off the TV. And the tennis match wasn’t very good. I didn’t enjoy it.

M: I grew up on a farm. My parents owned it. What about you?
W: I was born in New York City and grew up here, so did you often help your parents

teenage boys to help, too. They really looked forward to coming.
W: Why? Were they paid much?

M: Wow, you’re so busy!
W: But I’ll be free after the competition. By the way, have you finished the paper our history teacher asked us to write?
M: Sure.
W: Then shall we go on Sunday afternoon, Ryan?
M: Well, I have to stay at home. Our English teacher’s going to make a home visit. How about Sunday evening?

Text 9
W: Jack, the film is over. What do you think of it?
M: Well, I’m disappointed at it. Can you believe such a story?

M: You can say that. But the ship officer is a little unusual.
W: Well, he is a little unusual. But the ship doctor is amazing. He’s so cool when he brings the captain back to life.
M: That is pretty exciting, but the photography is so false.
W: How do you know that? You were breathing so nosily while sleeping, and the
neighbors probably felt very angry.
M: No, I wasn’t sleeping. You must be cheating. Well, I’m going to the restroom.
W: OK, I’ll wait for you at the entrance.
