What is a GPA?
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.
How to calculate a GPA?
● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
● Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.

I often wake up to my alarm after a short night and step out of bed to a day I’ve fought through many times. When I get to school, I start with Spanish, my hardest class. Despite being around all year, I have no idea what’s coming on. I then walk to my English class, in which I was stuck in the language rules. The assignments take much energy that my perfectionist nature is unable to take on in school so I save them for later, most probably late at night.
This is my reality as a student with dyslexia, a learning disorder in reading and spelling; assignments that take three times as long as they’re meant to, late nights and early mornings to even slightly keep up with my classes.
I was told that Advanced Placement U.S. History would be my hardest class. But here, I am in my element. Despite being three assignments behind, I’m actively engaged. Yes, my passion for history heightens my focus, but my teacher’s willingness to work with me is what allows me to fly high.
Teachers need to offer alternative structures that make learning more accessible. I’ve had teachers who teach lecture-based classes where students are expected to take notes and listen. As a student with dyslexia, this doesn’t work. A fix for that is as simple as providing alternative resources: a slide show students can go back to after class — or perhaps even an activity that further plays with the concepts.
Now many schools are shifting to approaches that meet the needs of all kids. However, supportive work can still be done to support students with dyslexia. If school systems are willing to provide support and education by creating an accessible class structure from the start, students won’t be stuck into academic tracks that don’t push them to their full potential (潜力).
4. Why does the author have to do his homework late at night?
A. He is assigned extra homework. B. He fails to manage his spare time.

5. What does the underlined part “in my element” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Burning the midnight oil. B. Biting off more than I can chew.
C. Feeling like a fish in water. D. Having butterflies in my stomach.
6. What does the author think of lecture-based classes?
A. Satisfying. B. Inspiring. C. Rewarding. D. Demanding.
7. What does the author advise schools to do for students?
A. Offer classes with alternatives. B. Give students more time to take notes.
C. Organize out-of-class activities. D. Get teachers trained in special education.

Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts.
Honey is the only food product made by an insect that humans eat. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品).
A single pound of honey may require a beehive of up to 60,000 bees to visit two million flowers. No wonder some people call it liquid gold! Although amber-colored clover honey tends to be most common, honey comes in a variety of shades and flavors, depending on the flowers that the bees gather nectar (花蜜) from.
Honey has been used throughout history in a number of ways. One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becomes solid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the honey to its liquid form.
No one knows exactly how long honey has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC show early evidence of beckeeping. Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power!
Besides its many uses as a sweetener, honey has long been used as a medicinal remedy (疗法). Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. Honey is also an effective remedy to relieve a painful throat. It has even been found to be as effective in easing coughs in children.
The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey.
8. According to the passage, what makes honey unique among the foods that humans eat?
A. Its various shades. B. Its natural creation.
C. Its delightful sweetness. D. Its remarkable history.
9. Why does the author mention the honey in the Egyptian pyramids?
A. To illustrate that it never goes bad.
B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians.
C. To compare it with the honey in Spain.
D. To inform that it originates from Egypt.
10. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey?
A. Promoting bacterial growth.
B. Curing throat pain.
C. Preventing infection in wounds.
D. Resisting common colds.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature
B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure
C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy
D. Honey: a Common Sweetener
D
During a judging period for a recent short story contest, I started thinking a lot about dialogue tags. Because in many submissions characters didn’t “say” a thing. They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one “said” anything. And I started wondering why.
The more I thought about it, the more I understood the temptation. We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose. Why walk when you can skip or wander? Why cry when you can sob or weep? Why wouldn’t we reach for exciting verbs instead of dull “said”? Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its own right? The problem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting to become something more than the sum of its parts. Without something to provide structure, a collection of the world’s most glorious diamonds would still only amount to a heap of rocks.
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting — we can sense it in the way they spit out words, clench fists, or storm from the room. What’s more, readers may not initially imagine a particular line being “sobbed.” When we reach the end of a sentence and find out our leading lady has actually sobbed instead of whispered, it pulls us right out of the story. We pause. We reread the line. We adjust our understanding and begin again. But that wonderful momentum when we’re fully immersed in the scene, holding our breath to find out what our heroine says next, is lost.
Creating a successful work of fiction is about giving the reader all the materials they need to build your fictional world in their mind. Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.
12. What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. The word “said” is overused in our stories.
B. The use of exciting verbs makes characters alive.
C. Varieties of verbs are preferred by judges at contests.
D. Strong verbs are considered to be an eye-catcher.
13. According to the author, ______ contributes most to a good story.
A. a talkative character B. a vivid conversation
C. a collection of dialogue tags D. a wild imagination
14. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Creative dialogue tags help keep readers immersed in reading.
B. What was said should be prioritised over how it was said.
C. Readers may better understand a scene after rereading the line.
D. The more materials a work of fiction contains, the more successful it is.
15. What argumentative methods are used in this article?
① Using examples ② Justifying an assumption
③ Comparing and contrasting ④ Appealing to readers’ emotions
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①③

When I was a kid, I took traveling with my parents for granted. Sure, they paid for everything. But they were basically no different from teachers taking us to a field trip. ____16____. For example, they took us to Denali National Park instead of Disney World. And we sometimes stayed at hotels without pools. And they never let us buy anything from the SkyMall catalog (目录).
Of course, some 20 years later, I consider traveling with my parents, now both in their 60s, to be the utmost privilege. ____17____. Neither am I, and every day that passes brings us closer to our last. Fortunately, since graduating college, I’ve been able to cover some serious ground with each of them.
Together my dad and I have looked for the Loch Ness monster in Scotland, photographed wildlife in Grand Teton National Park, and most recently, survived the famously dangerous Drake Passage. Meanwhile, my mom and I have stayed at a $9/night treehouse hostel in Mexico, eaten at a Michelin-starred vegetarian restaurant in Vienna, and most recently, road-tripped through three states.

After all, even if you’re the apple that fell right under the tree, traveling with the people who raised you isn’t always easy. “____19____,” says Alexis Sherry, a New Jersey-based travel agent. Still, Sherry is seeing an increasing number of clients requesting vacations for more than one generation. They can be difficult to plan, but so far she says she’s had no “disasters,” and often, her clients come back closer than ever.
“Our parents are our earliest attachment bonds,” says Katie d’ Autremont, a licensed professional adviser based in Bozeman, Montana. “It can be healing and fun to rekindle that bond in our adult years and as our adult selves.” She sees traveling together as the perfect opportunity for getting to know each other for who we are now, with “now” being the key word. ____20____.

B. I know they’re no longer unbeatable
C. After all, as humans, we’re always evolving

Sweat dripped from Callie’s face as she helped her big brother Briggs load ha y bales (捆) onto the machine. The machine made loud noise while it carried the bales up to the hay loft (干草棚), where Callie’s dad piled them up.
All was quiet when Callie went inside to feed the horses. But as she filled the water bucket, she thought she heard a faint meow (猫叫声) from the hayloft. She climbed the steps to the loft and listened. The sound seemed to be coming from behind the bales. She ran to get her dad and Briggs. Briggs cocked his head, “It’s coming from outside”, he determined. “Just a bird in a tree.” Callie’s dad agreed. “Probably a mockingbird or a catbird,” he said. “How do you know for sure?” Callie said.
“I guess we’ve just got better ears than you,” Briggs joked. But Callie wasn’t convinced.
She checked the hayloft again after supper. “Are you stuck in there, kitty?” she said, pressing an ear to the bales. “Meow!” came a sad cry. Callie raced back to the house. “I heard it again, Dad! Will you please listen once more?” “It’s okay, Callie,” her dad said, comforting her. “I’ll go and take a look.”
A few minutes later, he poked his head into Callie’s room. “The only thing I heard out there was a mockingbird,” he said. “So you can stop worrying.” “OK, Dad,” Callie said. But she woke in the night thinking about what she’d heard. What if a kitten was trapped behind the bales? She lay on her back, wondering what to do.
Finally, she changed into jeans and a sweatshirt, and then walked quietly into Briggs’s room. “I need your flashlight (手电筒).” she whispered. “Huh?” Briggs was confused. “I need it to find the kitten,” Callie explained. “I’ll be careful” Briggs huffed. “You are so stubborn!” “You’re the best,” Callie said.

根据文章中的“What is a GPA?(什么是平均学分绩点?)”“How to calculate a GPA?(如何计算平均学分绩点?)”“What are the consequences of failing college courses?(大学课程不及格的后果是什么?)” 故选A。
根据“How to calculate a GPA?”下面的“Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.(把总分除以总学时,你就得到了平均绩点。)”
根据“What are the consequences of failing college courses?”下面的“Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organizations and program choices, as competitive programs require top GPAs.(每一个不及格的分数(F)都会显著影响你在该学年的GPA,限制俱乐部、组织和项目选择,因为竞争性项目需要顶尖的GPA。)”

6. What does the author think of lecture-based classes?
A. Satisfying. B. Inspiring. C. Rewarding. D. Demanding.
7. What does the author advise schools to do for students?

C. Organize out-of-class activities. D. Get teachers trained in special education.
C 5. C 6. D 7. A

根据第二段“This is my reality as a student with dyslexia, a learning disorder in reading and spelling; assignments that take three times as long as they’re meant to, late nights and early mornings to even slightly keep up with my classes.(这就是我作为一名患有阅读障碍(一种在阅读和拼写方面的学习障碍)的学生的现实;完成作业所花的时间是正常情况的三倍,为了勉强跟上课程进度,我常常熬夜早起。)”
根据第三段“Despite being three assignments behind, I’m actively engaged. Yes, my passion for history heightens my focus, but my teacher’s willingness to work with me is what allows me to fly high.(尽管落后了三项作业,但我积极参与。是的,我对历史的热情提高了我的注意力,但老师愿意与我合作,这让我能够展翅高飞。)”可知,作者在这门课上感觉很自在,能够很好地投入其中。所以猜测in my element意思应该是“如鱼得水”,与C选项意思相符。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“I’ve had teachers who teach lecture - based classes where students are expected to take notes and listen. As a student with dyslexia, this doesn’t work.(我遇到过一些老师以讲座式授课,要求学生边听边做笔记。作为一名有阅读障碍的学生,这种方式行不通。)”可知,讲座式课程对作者这样有阅读障碍的学生来说要求过高,难以适应。所以作者认为讲座式课程是“苛刻的,要求高的”。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Teachers need to offer alternative structures that make learning more accessible.(教师需要提供可供选择教学结构,使学习更容易。)”以及“A fix for that is as simple as providing alternative resources: a slide show students can go back to after class—or perhaps even an activity that further plays with the concepts.(解决这个问题的方法很简单,就是提供可供选择的资源:比如学生课后可以回看的幻灯片展示,或者甚至是一个能进一步探讨相关概念的活动。)” 故选A项。

B 9. A 10. C 11. A

细节理解题,根据第二段“Honey is the only food product that humans cat that is made by an insect. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品). (蜂蜜是人类食用的唯一一种由昆虫制造的食品。即使我们拥有所有的技术能力,也没有人想出如何制造人造蜂蜜。真的没有替代品。)”可知,蜂蜜是人类食用的唯一由昆虫制造的食物产品,这是它在人类所食用的食物中独一无二的地方,即它的天然形成方式。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power! 故选A项。
根据第六段中“Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. (因为任何种类的细菌都很难在蜂蜜中生存,所以它在切口上形成了完美的屏障,可以防止感染。)”可知,蜂蜜的药用用途之一是它能在伤口上形成一道屏障,防止感染。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts. (蜂蜜是一种大多数人认为理所当然的甜食。但它不仅仅是蛋糕的配料或茶的甜味剂。它在某种程度上是一个奇迹。)”可知,蜂蜜不只是人们习以为常的用于蛋糕或茶的东西,而是一种奇迹般的存在,结合最后一段“The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey. (下次蜜蜂飞过您的花园或您在吐司上涂抹一些蜂蜜时,想想蜂蜜的奇迹。)”再次呼吁人们在看到蜜蜂或食用蜂蜜时思考蜂蜜的奇迹之处。综合全文,都是围绕蜂蜜是大自然赋予的一种甜蜜奇迹来展开叙述的,A项“Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature”最能概括文章主旨。故选A项。
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ③④ D. ①③
D 13. B 14. B 15. A

根据文章第二段内容“We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose.(我们总是被鼓励在我们的文章中使用强烈的、可操作的动词)”以及“Why couldn’t each verb be a tiny sparkling gem in its own right?(为什么每个动词本身就不能成为一颗闪闪发光的小宝石呢?)”
根据文章第三段内容“Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it.(对话就是你的钻石,朋友们。当我们阅读你的作品时,你的对话应该栩栩如生,让我们的大脑“听到”每一行,而不仅仅是阅读它)”可知,在作者看来,对话就是钻石,栩栩如生的对话会让读者“听到”每一行。因此,在作者看来,生动的谈话对一个好故事的贡献最大。故选B项。
14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章末尾段内容“Readers need believable dialogue. And if you’ve created dynamic characters who speak words we can really hear, you will never need to tell us how something was said.(读者需要可信的对话。如果你创造了动态的人物,他们说的话我们真的能听到,你就不需要告诉我们是怎么说的)”可知,在作者看来,有了可信的对话,动态的人物,就不需要告诉读者“怎么说的”这个动作了,即,说的话要比如何说更重要。由此推知,作者应该会认同选项B“What was said should be prioritised over how it was said.(说话的内容应该优先于说话的方式)”的论述。
根据文章第一段内容“They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one ‘said’ anything.(他们叫喊着,他们询问着,他们猜想着。一些人尖叫,另一些人喃喃自语。但是没有人“说”什么)”可知,作者举例了投稿中的使用的与“说”表达相同含义的其它强烈动词。同时,作者在第三段提出了论点“Dialogue is your diamond, friends.(对话就是你的钻石,朋友们)”,并用“When we read your work, your dialogue should be so lifelike that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting…(当我们阅读你的作品时,你的对话应该栩栩如生,让我们的大脑“听到”每一行,而不仅仅是阅读它。我们不需要被告知角色在大喊大叫……)”的论述,证明了其合理性和正确性。由此推知,作者使用了举例论证和证明假设是正确的论述方法。故选A项。

根据上文“When I was a kid, I took traveling with my parents for granted.(当我还是个孩子的时候,我认为和父母一起旅行是理所当然的。)”以及下文“For example, they took us to Denali National Park instead of Disney World. And we sometimes stayed at hotels without pools. And they never let us buy anything from the SkyMall catalog(目录).(例如,他们带我们去德纳利国家公园而不是迪士尼世界。我们有时住在没有游泳池的酒店。他们从不允许我们从《空中商城目录》上买任何东西。)”可知,父母的一些行为在作者小时候看来是限制了自己的乐趣,与 E 项“To my brothers and me, they seemed to be bent on limiting our fun(对我和我的兄弟们来说,他们似乎一心想要限制我们的乐趣)”表达的意思一致,故选E项。
根据上文“Of course, some 20 years later, I consider traveling with my parents, now both in their 60s,to be the utmost privilege.(当然,大约 20 年后,我认为和现在都 60 多岁的父母一起旅行是最大的荣幸。)”以及下文“Neither am I, and every day that passes brings us closer to our last.(我也不是,每过一天,我们就离最后一天更近一步。)”可知,作者意识到父母不再是不可战胜的,与 B 项“I know they’re no longer unbeatable(我知道他们不再是不可战胜的)”表达的意思一致,故选B项。
根据下文“After all, even if you’re the apple that fell right under the tree, traveling with the people who raised you isn’t always easy.(毕竟,即使你是正好掉在树下的苹果,和养育你的人一起旅行并不总是容易的。)”可知,作者是想说和父母旅行并不都是完美的,与D项“That’s not to say that all of our trips have been without flaws(这并不是说我们所有的旅行都没有缺陷)”表达的意思一致,故选D项。
根据空前一句提到的“traveling with the people who raised you isn't always easy(和养育你的人一起旅行并不总是容易的)”,以及下文提到的“Her clients come back closer than ever(她的客户回来后比以往任何时候都要亲密)”,可知,旅行中虽然有挑战,但也有可能增进关系,G选项“There are always challenges as we are dealing with different physical abilities and interests(我们在应对不同的身体能力和兴趣时总会遇到挑战)”符合语境,既说明了旅行中的挑战,又与后文的积极结果形成对比,故选G项。
根据上文“She sees traveling together as the perfect opportunity for getting to know each other for who we are now, with “now” being the key word.(她认为一起旅行是一个完美的机会,让我们了解彼此现在的样子,“现在”是关键词。)”

Paragraph 2:
Thanks to Briggs’s help, the last heavy bale was moved, revealing a tiny, frightened kitten.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
She grabbed the flashlight and rushed to the hayloft. Her heart pounded as she quietly entered and aimed the flashlight towards the hayloft. Callie climbed up the steps and then crawled towards the hay bales to where she’ d heard the cry. “Are you in there?” she called. And there it was again - a faint, desperate meow behind the bales! Determined to find the source, she began to move the hay bales, which, however, were too heavy for her to lift. Just when she was at a loss, she heard her brother’s voice. “I’ll do it!” Briggs was already halfway up the ladder to offer help.
Thanks to Briggs’s help, the last heavy bale was moved, revealing a tiny, frightened kitten. Its fur was matted with hay, and it shivered as Callie carefully reached out to it. “It’s okay, little one. I’ve got you now,” she whispered, gently cradling the kitten in her arms. It looked up and purred, blinking its eyes at Callie. “I think she’s saying thank you.” Briggs remarked, “You’ve got better ears than me.” Callie let out a breath and grinned, “Thank you for helping me. You are always the best!” In the bright moonlight, the brother and sister walked home with their new friend, chatting and laughing, their hearts full of joy.
