Scientists have taken to the salon (美发厅) after realising hairdressers may be an “under-recognised” force in fueling climate action. Alongside their craft, hairdressers are known for their conversation skills, who often act as an agony aunt, adviser and friend rolled into one. New research from the University of Bath’s Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformation (CAST) reveals this is what makes hair salons centers of trust that could be used to encourage conversations around climate change.
The research team interviewed 30 UK salon owners about sustainability, and then ran a nationwide intervention in 25 sustainable salons using Mirror Talkers, where eco-tips are placed on salon mirrors to engender discussions on sustainable haircare practices.
“The carbon footprint of shampoo (洗发水) is mostly in the hot water used,” says Denise Baden of the University of Southampton. “Simple messages like ‘most of us use too much shampoo and shampoo too often’ can spark conversations about how shampooing less and at lower temperatures saves time, money, energy, water and is better for your skin and hair. ”
The study found nearly 73% of salon clients were likely to change their haircare routines after conversations sparked by the Mirror Talkers, some even switching to eco-friendly products, using cooler water, and adopting greener habits at home.
Researchers say this demonstrates how hairdressers have an “untapped ability” to weave climate change into everyday conversations and actions. They are now urging policymakers to roll out tools like Mirror Talkers nationally. “If we’re serious about building a public movement for climate action, then it’s time to invest in these unsung influencers because real change starts in everyday conversations,” says Dr Sam Hampton of CAST.
Matilda Collins, a senior director and stylist, says the Mirror Talkers initiative could gain positive outcomes if the experience “feels natural and engages clients without being overly virtuous”. She adds, “Ultimately, the trust a stylist builds with the client is what will drive potential positive changes in behaviour. It could be a great education platform and a conversation starter, however. ”
21. What did the researchers ask the salon owners to do to promote sustainable practices?
A. Change haircare products for free for their clients.
B. Put up the eco-tips on the salon mirrors.
C. Teach clients how to cut hair in an environmentally friendly way.
D. Survey clients about their carbon footprint daily.
22. What is the focus of the third paragraph?
A. The importance of saving water.
B. The harm of overusing shampoo.
C. The function of eco-tips in salons.
D. The strategy of starting conversations.
23. What can we infer from Dr Sam Hampton’s words?
A. Sound policies encourage investment.
B. Daily conversations can make a difference.
C. Unsung influencers need professional training.
D. Mirror Talkers has gained nationwide popularity.

Electrolyte (电解质) drinks have become increasingly popular on gym floors and running routes, widely promoted as essential for boosting athletic performance and speeding up post-exercise recovery. Once used only by top athletes to cope with intense training in hot conditions, they now attract casual gym-goers and office workers as a simple daily way to stay hydrated These products, ranging from ready-to-drink sports drinks to powders that mix with water, can cost a few pounds per day, adding up to a considerable sum over time.
Electrolytes are essential minerals that play a key role in regulating nerves, supporting muscle function and maintaining fluid balance in the human body. Professor Graeme Close, a leading sports nutrition researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, points out that most people are wasting money on electrolyte drinks unnecessarily. A regular, well-designed diet can easily supply enough electrolytes for the average person’s daily needs.
However, during long and intense exercise where people sweat heavily, their electrolyte levels may drop significantly. “If you exercise for a long period of time, especially if you are a salty sweater, adding electrolytes in the form of sodium (钠) is a good choice,” Close says. Besides, electrolyte drinks can increase thirst, which helps people drink more water — something particularly necessary during extended workouts.
For moderate exercise such as a short trip to the gym, electrolytes are not necessary at all. “Just sip water regularly. That’s more than good enough, so keep your hard-earned money for other things,” Close advises. Of course, if you just enjoy the taste and it encourages you to drink more during exercise, it is not a bad thing. Instead of buying expensive commercial powders, he suggests a simple homemade mix: two-thirds water, one-third fruit juice (like pineapple juice) and a tiny pinch of salt. He also notes there’s little scientific evidence that taking electrolytes first thing in the morning brings any real benefit.
24. Which best describes the current market for electrolyte drinks?
A. Primarily used for top athletes in extreme training.
B. Chiefly sold as sports drinks to professionals.
C. Mainly sold as costly nerve disease treatments.
D. Shifted from professional to the general market.
25. Why does Professor Close think people waste money on electrolyte drinks?
A. Such drinks are mostly just plain water.
B. People mix electrolyte powders poorly.
C. A normal balanced diet offers enough electrolytes.
D. The body maintains fluid balance by itself.
26. What can be inferred about the recommended homemade mix?
A. It works best when taken in the morning.
B. It only works with special pineapple juice.
C. It is worse for the body than commercial products.
D. It is a cheap alternative to expensive drinks.
27. What is Professor Close’s attitude towards electrolyte drinks?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned.

Pizza, one of the most popular foods worldwide, has a long and rich history that is closely tied to Italian culture. Its origins can be traced back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Greece, people baked flatbreads with various toppings, which were a precursor (前身) to modern-day pizza. However, it was in Naples, Italy, that pizza as we know it today truly took shape.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Naples was a bustling city with a large working-class population. Pizza became a prevalent and affordable meal for the locals. These early pizzas were simple, with a basic dough topped with tomatoes, cheese, and sometimes herbs. They were often sold by street vendors and eaten on the go.
The turning point for pizza’s popularity came in 1889 when a Neapolitan pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito created a special pizza for the visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Italy. To represent the colors of the Italian flag, he used tomatoes (red), mozzarella cheese (white), and basil (green). This pizza, named Pizza Margherita, not only became an instant favorite of the royal couple but also a symbol of Italian national identity.
As Italians immigrated to other parts of the world, especially the United States, they brought their love for pizza with them. In the early 20th century, the first pizzerias opened in American cities like New York. Initially, pizza was mainly popular among Italian-American communities. But over time, with marketing efforts and the increasing acceptance of diverse cuisines, pizza became a mainstream food in America. Today, pizza is a global phenomenon, with countless variations in toppings, crust styles, and cooking methods. From the thin-crust New York-style pizza to the deep-dish Chicago-style pizza, each region has put its own spin on this classic dish.
28. What was the precursor of modern-day pizza?

29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 2?
A. Popular. B. Illegal. C. Horrible. D. Potential.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How Italian immigrants spread pizza to the United States.
B. The different variations of pizza around the world today.
C. The reason why flatbreads became popular in Naples in the 18th century.
D. Pizza Margherita created for the Italian royal family and its influence.
31. What can be known from the passage?
A. The early pizzas had complex toppings.
B. Different regions have different styles of pizza.
C. Pizza is the most popular food in South America.
D. The royal couple of Italy introduced pizzas to the whole world.

I was a habitual pessimist, forever assuming the worst cases. As a textbook “helicopter mom,” I checked the backyard for hidden dangers before letting him play, carried a fully stocked emergency kit to his T-ball games, and flatly declined all concerts or crowded outings — fearing crushes, fires, or unforeseen disasters. My husband Don repeatedly argued that my overprotection was suffocating (窒息) David, urging me to let him experience normal childhood risks, but I maintained that I was merely safeguarding my son.
The significant turning point came on a quiet afternoon when I chanced upon David in his room. He was carefully wrapping his beloved Superman figurine (小雕像) in bubble wrap, and when I asked why, he announced proudly, “Now you’re safe from pointy buildings and crashes.” In that instant, I was struck by a harsh and humbling truth: my overwhelming paranoia (偏执) had impacted his young mind, narrowing not just my own world but limiting his too. I realized I was wasting my life on unfounded fears and dragging David into the same cycle of anxiety.
Determined to change, I peeled off the bubble wrap, explained that only Kryptonite could harm Superman, and guided him to play with non-destructive targets. I agreed to attend the downtown concert Don had been urging us to go to, adopting “cross that bridge if we come to it” as my new motto. Gradually, I reconnected with friends I’d pushed away, loosened the invisible hold I had on David, and learned to embrace the present moment rather than fear the unknown.
I’ll never seek extreme adventures like skydiving, but I now enjoy activities I once avoided-from family camping trips to David’s sports games. He matured into a confident, tough young man, bearing the small scars of a normal childhood. Those roads I missed due to paranoia still hurt, but the newer, brighter paths I’ve chosen — thanks to a four-year-old and his superhero — have made all the difference in both our lives.
32. Which of the following best describes the mother in paragraph 1?
A. sensible and cautious. B. Daring and responsible.
C. Indifferent and pessimistic. D. Overprotective and insistent.
33. Why did the mother decide to change?
A. To rebuild her social life and happiness.
B. To become a perfectly fearless role model.
C. To discourage her son from becoming fearful.
D. To demonstrate her parenting style was justified
34. What do we know about the mother from the last two paragraphs?
A. She addressed problems as they arose.
B. She approved of a scar-free childhood.
C. She rarely regretted her missed chances.
D. She completely transformed her life belief.
35. Which of the following titles is most suitable for the passage?
A. The Many Roads Not Taken B. The Day I Conquered All Fear
C. Superman Saves More Than a Child D. From Helicopter Mom to Hands-off Parent

Easy Tips for Healthy Teeth
A bright, healthy smile makes you feel confident. But do you know how to keep your teeth strong and clean? Taking care of your teeth isn’t hard — you just need to follow some simple daily habits. Let’s learn easy tips to protect your oral health.
●Brush Your Teeth Every Day
Brushing is the first step to clean teeth. Everyone knows we should brush our teeth twice a day: once in the morning and once before bed. ____36____ Use a soft-bristled (软毛的) toothbrush and a little fluoride (氟) toothpaste. Move the brush in small circles, not back and forth hard — this keeps your gums (牙龈) safe. Spend about two minutes each time, and don’t forget to brush your tongue too. It helps with bad breath.
●Use floss (牙线)to Clean Between Teeth
A toothbrush can’t reach the small spaces between your teeth. That’s where floss helps. You might think flossing is tricky at first, but it gets easier with practice. Just take a piece of floss about 20cm long, wrap most of it around your middle fingers, and hold a small part tight. Gently slide it between each pair of teeth. ____37____
●Stop Bad Habits for Teeth
Some small habits can hurt your teeth without you noticing. ____38____ For example, don’t use your teeth to open plastic bags or bite nails — this can chip or break your teeth. If you like chewing ice, stop too. Ice is hard and can damage your enamel (釉质). Also, if you play sports like basketball or soccer, wear a mouthguard. It protects your teeth from hits.
●____39____
What you put in your mouth affects your teeth. Sugary foods and drinks are the biggest enemies of healthy teeth. Eating too many sweet snacks can lead to tooth pain and cavities, because bacteria in your mouth will turn sugar into acid. This acid hurts your tooth enamel which is the hard outer layer of your teeth. Instead, eat more fruits, vegetables, and dairy, like milk or cheese — they help make teeth strong. Drink water often too, especially after eating.
● Visit the Dentist Regularly
Even if you brush and floss well, you need to see the dentist. A dentist has special tools to keep your teeth in better shape. ____40____ They also clean your teeth more deeply than you can at home, removing tough plaque (牙菌斑).Try to go to the dentist every six months — it’s not scary, and it keeps your smile healthy!
Taking care of your teeth is a lifelong habit. Start these easy steps now, and you’ll have a happy, healthy smile for years!
A. Watch What You Eat and Drink
B. Choose Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
C. This removes food bits that brushing misses.
D. These habits seem small, but they can cause big problems for your teeth.
E. However, brushing in the right way is also as important as brushing often.
F. They can look for cavities or gum problems at an early stage when it’s easy to fix them.
G. Brushing in the morning cleans food from night, and brushing at night removes day’s dirt.

My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, “My ears, Mommy.” She said, “No. Many people are deaf. But they are doing well in their life. You keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.”
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated (深思) the correct answer. So this time I told her, “Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.” She looked at me and told me, “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.” Over the years my mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was: “No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.” Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My mum looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to Grandpa. She asked me, “Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?” I was surprised when she asked me this on this occasion.
I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me, “This question is very important. How you answer it shows whether you have learnt about life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you that you were wrong and I have given you the reasons. But today is the day you will know the answer.” I looked puzzled. “All your previous answers — ears, eyes, hands, heart... They are all very important to yourself. But this time I need you to think of something that is important to others.”
Paragraph 1: “My dear, the most important body part,” she said, “is your shoulder.”

Paragraph 2: “Mum, I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder too.”

Some people never get lost, while others need a GPS just to find their way to the store. And of course, a GPS is not always accurate. Definitely. everyone has a story about following GPS route and ending up in the middle of a field. But why are some people so much Better at finding their way than others? A lot of people don't pay attention at all. If you are thinking about something else while you're walking, of course you are more likely to get lost.
B 22. C 23. B

根据第三段““The carbon footprint of shampoo (洗发水) is mostly in the hot water used,” says Denise Baden of the University of Southampton. “Simple messages like ‘most of us use too much shampoo and shampoo too often’ can spark conversations about how shampooing less and at lower temperatures saves time, money, energy, water and is better for your skin and hair. ”(南安普顿大学的丹尼斯·巴登表示:“洗发水的碳足迹主要来自洗头时使用的热水。像‘我们大多数人用的洗发水太多、洗头太频繁’这类简单提示,就能引发相关讨论:减少洗头频次、用更低水温洗头,既能节省时间、金钱、能源和水资源,还对皮肤和头发更友好。”)”可知,第三段重点介绍了沙龙里环保小贴士的作用。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中““If we’re serious about building a public movement for climate action, then it’s time to invest in these unsung influencers because real change starts in everyday conversations,” says Dr Sam Hampton of CAST. (巴斯大学气候变化与社会转型中心的萨姆·汉普顿博士表示:“如果我们真心想要推动全民气候行动运动,就该投入资源支持这些无名的影响力群体,因为真正的改变始于日常对话。”)”可知,从萨姆·汉普顿博士的话语中我们可以推断出日常对话能够带来实际影响。

D 25. C 26. D 27. B
根据第一段中“Electrolyte (电解质) drinks have become increasingly popular on gym floors and running routes, widely promoted as essential for boosting athletic performance and speeding up post-exercise recovery. Once used only by top athletes to cope with intense training in hot conditions, they now attract casual gym-goers and office workers as a simple daily way to stay hydrated
根据第二段中“Professor Graeme Close, a leading sports nutrition researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, points out that most people are wasting money on electrolyte drinks unnecessarily. A regular, well-designed diet can easily supply enough electrolytes for the average person’s daily needs. (利物浦约翰摩尔斯大学的著名运动营养学专家Graeme Close教授指出,大多数人都在毫无必要地浪费钱购买电解质饮料。对于普通人而言,一份合理的、精心设计的饮食就能轻松满足日常所需的电解质含量。)”可知,Close教授认为人们在电解质饮料上浪费钱,是因为正常的均衡饮食就能提供足够的电解质。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Instead of buying expensive commercial powders, he suggests a simple homemade mix: two-thirds water, one-third fruit juice (like pineapple juice) and a tiny pinch of salt. (他建议不要购买昂贵的商业冲剂,而是采用一种简单的自制混合物:三分之二的水,三分之一的果汁(比如菠萝汁),再加上一点点盐。)”可推知,教授推荐的自制混合物经济实惠,是昂贵饮料的一种廉价替代品。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中Close所说的话“If you exercise for a long period of time, especially if you are a salty sweater, adding electrolytes in the form of sodium (钠) is a good choice (如果你长时间进行锻炼,尤其是如果你属于容易出汗且体液流失较多的人群,那么以钠的形式补充电解质是一个不错的选择)”和最后一段中Close所说的话“Just sip water regularly. That’s more than good enough, so keep your hard-earned money for other things (只需定期小口喝水即可。这已经足够了,所以把钱留着用于其他用途吧。)”可知,Close教授否定不必要的电解质饮料消费,也肯定其特定场景的价值,表明他对电解质饮料的态度是客观的。

A. Neapolitan street-sold bread.
B. Ancient Greek flatbreads with toppings.
C. The bread baked by Raffaele Esposito.
D. The food sold in early American pizzerias.
B 29. A 30. D 31. B

根据文章第一段“As a textbook “helicopter mom,” I checked the backyard for hidden dangers before letting him play, carried a fully stocked emergency kit to his T-ball games, and flatly declined all concerts or crowded outings — fearing crushes, fires, or unforeseen disasters. My husband Don repeatedly argued that my overprotection was suffocating (窒息) David, urging me to let him experience normal childhood risks, but I maintained that I was merely safeguarding my son.(作为一位教科书式的“直升机妈妈”,我会在让孩子去后院玩耍之前先检查一遍有没有隐藏的危险,在他打儿童棒球比赛时随身携带一个装满应急物品的工具包,并且断然拒绝所有音乐会或人多拥挤的外出活动——因为我害怕发生踩踏、火灾或无法预见的灾难。我丈夫Don多次指出,我的过度保护正在窒息David,他力劝我让孩子去经历正常童年该有的风险,但我始终坚持自己只是在保护儿子。)”可知,这位母亲会拒绝所有对儿子有隐藏危险的活动,丈夫认为她在窒息孩子,但她却觉得自己是在保护儿子,故可推知这位母亲过度保护且固执己见。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“In that instant, I was struck by a harsh and humbling truth: my overwhelming paranoia (偏执) had impacted his young mind, narrowing not just my own world but limiting his too. I realized I was wasting my life on unfounded fears and dragging David into the same cycle of anxiety.(在那一刻,我被一个残酷又令人自省的事实击中了:我那过度的偏执已经影响了他幼小的心灵,不仅限制了我自己的世界,也限制了他的世界。我意识到自己正把生命浪费在毫无根据的恐惧上,并且把David也拖入了同样的焦虑循环中。)”可知,作者看见儿子包裹小雕像的行为时,意识到自己的偏执影响了孩子的心灵,限制了他,且将孩子拖入了同样的焦虑循环中,因此作者想要阻止儿子也变得同样恐惧,因此决定做出改变。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I agreed to attend the downtown concert Don had been urging us to go to, adopting “cross that bridge if we come to it” as my new motto. Gradually, I reconnected with friends I’d pushed away, loosened the invisible hold I had on David, and learned to embrace the present moment rather than fear the unknown.(我同意了Don一直劝我去的那场市中心音乐会,把“船到桥头自然直”作为我的新座右铭。渐渐地,我重新联系了那些曾被我疏远的朋友,松开了一直紧握David的隐形之手,并学会了活在当下,而不是惧怕未知。)”可知,作者把“船到桥头自然直” 作为新的座右铭,学会了活在当下,而不是惧怕未知,故她改变后,遇到问题了再解决,而不是提前焦虑。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Those roads I missed due to paranoia still hurt, but the newer, brighter paths I’ve chosen — thanks to a four-year-old and his superhero — have made all the difference in both our lives.(那些因偏执而错过的路,至今仍让我感到遗憾,但那些我选择的更新、更明亮的道路——多亏了一个四岁孩子和他的超级英雄——已经让我们的生活发生了翻天覆地的变化。)”

One possible version:
“My dear, the most important body part,” she said, “is your shoulder.” “Is it because it holds up my head?” I asked. “No, it is because it can hold up the head of a friend or loved one when they cry,” she replied. “Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you can always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.” I saw her eyes well up with tears.
“Mum, I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder too.” And silently, my mother put her head on my shoulder and started to cry. It was not heavy at all, and the wetness didn’t make me uncomfortable either. In fact when her warm tears damped my shoulder, I felt the pain in her heart, and I knew how hurt, lonely and vulnerable she was at that moment. I felt like a man. I was there when someone I loved dearly needed me the most.
