One afternoon, the lifeguard reported over the phone to my husband Wilson that Leon's eye was badly injured by his board. Wilson rushed him to the emergency room, where he received 26 stitches(缝线) from the comer of his eye to the bridge of his nose. I was on an airplane flying home from a meeting while Leons' eye was being stitched. Wilson drove directly to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Leon was waiting in the car. “Leon?” I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been bad that day. “He's been in an accident, but he's going to be fine,” said my husband. A traveling working mother's worst nightmare(恶梦) had come true. I ran to the car so fast the heel of my shoe broke off. I swung open the door, to see that my youngest son had a patch(眼罩) over his eye and was leaning toward me crying, “Oh, Ma, I'm so glad you're home.” I cried in his arms, telling him how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called. “It's OK, Mom,” he comforted me. “You don't know how to surf anyway.” “What?” I asked, confused by his logic. “I'll be fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in 8 days,” said my son. I wanted to tell him he wasn't allowed to go near water again until he was 35, but instead I bit my tongue and hoped he would forget about surfing. For the next 7 days he kept pressing me to let him surf again. One day after I had repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he beat me at my own game. “Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love,” he said. And I gave in. Back then Leon was just a boy with a passion for surfing. Now he is a man with a responsibility. He ranks among the top 25 professional surfers in the world. Dr.Matt Pearce, first author on the paper, said,“The key message of the paper is that risk of depression is substantially lower for individuals who are physically active, and that most of these lower benefits occur at levels below the current health recommendations.Physical activity should therefore be encouraged to improve mental health even in inactive individuals who struggle to reach current recommendations.” The research combined data from 15 earlier studies, with 191,130 participants, all looking at the relationship between depression and physical activity.Since the study was observational in nature,it cannot prove a causeandeffect relationship. The researchers found “only minor additional benefits” to mental health when people were physically active beyond the recommended levels.Professor James Woodcock,a senior author on the paper, said,“There are two key features of this relationship:firstly, that the biggest difference in the risk of depression was seen when comparing those reporting no activity with those reporting a small amount”.“Even ten minutes a day appears to make a big difference.Secondly, that there appear to be minimal additional benefits of doing high volumes of activity.” The researchers said there were likely to be multiple reasons for their findings, including exercise activating certain networks in the brain and body, releasing feel good hormones called endorphins(内啡肽).Besides, people who are physically active usually sleep better,a key component of protecting your mental health. It might also be that improvements to individuals' body image from being more active, and increases in social interaction during activity played a role.Getting out in green spaces was another likely factor to boost the mood, with many studies linking the use of green spaces and lower depression risks. NASA reported the event, called the Wolf Moon, began Thursday afternoon and ended Saturday morning. But did you notice any changes in your personal sleep patterns in the days leading up to the full moon? As the latest full moon was beginning, a new study was released suggesting that a full moon can affect human sleep cycles. Researchers confirmed that the nights leading up to a full moon have more natural light available after the sun goes down. The new research found that in the days before a full moon, people go to sleep later in the evening and sleep for shorter periods of time. The moon takes 27.3 days to go around the Earth, but it takes 29.5 days to complete a full cycle from New Moon to New Moon. The new study measured the sleep patterns of test subjects as the moon progressed through at least one whole 29.5day cycle. Some subjects were tested through two moon cycles. On average, people involved in the study slept about 52 minutes less on nights before a full moon. They also went to bed about 30 minutes later. The research showed that people had the latest bedtime and the shortest amount of sleep during the nights that were three to five days before a full moon. The study involved 98 individuals living in three different indigenous communities in Argentina. Each local community had different access to electricity. One countryside community had no electricity access, while a second had only limited access. A third community was in a more populated area and had full access to electricity. The scientists say further research is needed to help explain other possible causes for the changes in sleep patterns in the test subjects. Such causes could involve biological differences in individuals or social patterns within communities. [语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述满月对人们睡眠的影响。 12.How does the author lead in the topic of the text? We may even wish we had a hero to help us. Well, today here is some advice for you. Turn ourselves into our own heroes. When we make ourselves heroes, we not only gain focus but also a sense of purpose. 16 For example, it can give us hope as stories in the books often do. In stories, writers often give their hero, the main person in the story, a purpose. 17 Write out our tasks and ideas. In stories, heroes also have tasks, which they want to finish, and ideas, which they see for themselves. So we can write out our tasks and ideas, not just for a project but for our life as well. With clear tasks and ideas, events in our life no longer seem to be separate events. 18 There's just a lot of value in having tasks and ideas. 19 When we know our strengths, we can use them fully. In difficult times, we can make our life easier by focusing on our strengths. It is even more important to identify weaknesses. All heroes have them. On their journey they face their weaknesses and learn from them. Have small goals within a larger goal. As we know, the hero's journey is not a onetime thing. It is a journey we are on in our entire life. 20 Our life's journey is ongoing and everchanging. We should be realistic with our goals and to be kind to ourselves, especially during difficult times. A.Learn from heroes in stories. B.We often live a life without purpose. C.Know our strengths and weaknesses. D.They become part of our larger stories. It is a journey we are on in our entire life.(我们知道,英雄的旅程不是一次性的事情。这是一段我们一生都要经历的旅程。)”给出前提,说明作为主角,会经历多次目标的设立。下文“Our life's journey is ongoing and everchanging. We should be realistic with our goals and to be kind to ourselves, especially during difficult times.(我们的生命之旅是不断变化的。我们应该现实地对待我们的目标,善待自己,尤其是在困难的时候。)”说明生活是变化的,所以应该根据实际调整目标。E项“So have small goals that we can measure in some way.(所以要有一些我们用一些方式可以衡量的小目标。)”承接上文,说明生命之旅不是一成不变的,应该设立小目标来应对实际情况。] Ⅲ.完形填空 When it comes to the changes in our life,I always memorize my skating.I 21 that no matter how much we enjoy doing something,at some point the one we enjoy comes to a 22 and we move on to our next life phase. That's when Clay saw it: a small trail that led into the volcano's crater(坑), a bowl of green with cloud forest giving way to green grass.A series of screw eyes(螺钉孔)had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down.Clay wanted to go down and take some pictures.Acaimie followed him a little way, but she was very cautious and quite scared of heights;so Clay went on alone. A few minutes later, she heard a crash—a noise that sounded like a large branch snapping, followed by the sound of something big rolling downhill.“Clay?” she called.Silence. Uneasy, she waited a minute and shouted again—still nothing. And then, from somewhere much further down, she heard a weak cry for help. This time she was certain: It was Clay calling for help from deep within the crater. As she looked over the lip of the volcano, she tried to stop some of her worst worries. Her phone wasn't getting a signal, and her cries for help were met with only silence.“Clay!” she shouted as loud as she could.“Clay, are you OK?” Acaimie grasped the rope and began climbing down the trail. When the path became too steep, she slid on her butt, her legs and arms getting bruised and scraped in the process. Then, just off the trail, she saw a flash of red.It was Clay's scarf. And next to it was his cell phone. She grabbed both and continued down, screaming for Clay all the way. “Help,” he said in that strange voice. “I'm coming! Stay where you are,” she said. Paragraph 1: Finally, she spotted Clay. Paragraph 2: Acaimie had to push those thoughts away and focus on what she could do. [参考范文] Paragraph 1: Finally, she spotted Clay. He was sitting on the ground, blood running down his face. “Clay,” she called in an anxious voice. “What's wrong? Have you broken anything?” With a confused look on his face, Clay just stared at her and couldn't remember anything that had happened. Perhaps the rope he'd been holding had snapped, or maybe he'd just missed a step, but it was clear he'd fallen a long way. Acaimie had to stay calm for Clay, but inside she was in great panic, worried that he had internal injuries that could kill him. Paragraph 2: Acaimie had to push those thoughts away and focus on what she could do. She helped him up, had him hold the rope tight and pushed him from behind. Inch by inch, they climbed. After what felt like forever, they reached the top. As they made their way down the trail, Clay's breathing became more laboured. Acaimie kept shouting for help, but they didn't see anyone. Thankfully, about halfway down she managed to get a signal and call an ambulance. To their relief, by the time they reached the bottom, the ambulance was waiting for them. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
