Section A

blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
City streets are littered with all kinds of refuse. On just about every street and sidewalk, one can find old newspaper, crushed cans, food wrappers, and discarded cigarettes, not to mention blobs (斑点) of old chewing gum 1 (stick) on walls, street poles, and on the ground. Of all these, gum is one of the hardest things to clean up.
In its attempt 2 (clean) discarded gum off the streets and sidewalks, the authorities in London have tried everything from tools that shoot high-pressure water and steam to various kinds of chemicals 3 dissolve the gum. But nothing seems to work. The streets 4 (dot) with unattractive blobs of the stuff. Or at least they were unattractive 5 Ben Wilson came along.
Ben Wilson is an artist on a mission. He wants to make good use of 6 others have thrown away and no one else wants: old chewing gum. When Mr. Wilson finds gum on the ground, down he goes with his painting supplies and sets out to create a work of art. He uses the discarded blobs of old gum 7 canvases (画布) for his mini paintings. After finishing a work, Mr. Wilson takes a picture of 8 for his archive.
9 (paint) all the gum on the streets of London could be a never-ending task for Ben Wilson. On a single street like High Street Barnet, it took him more than one month to paint all of the gum that he found in just three blocks. And new canvases are being spit out every day on streets. But he does not seem worried. As he told a reporter in one interview, “I’m just going to keep painting and see 10 the enthusiasm takes me.”

Why don’t you get a proper job?
Today’s 14-and 15-year-olds are ambitious. They are optimistic about their 11 , but their career ideas are rather vague. A job for life is not in their vocabulary; neither is a dead-end but secure job that is boring but pays the bills. Almost half the boys surveyed expected that their hobbies would lead them into the right sort of job, while most girls seemed determined to 12 traditionally female careers such as nursing.
In the past, this might have counted as bad news. But the world has changed. The global economy is not kind to yesterday’s 13 and dependable worker. The future belongs to quick-thinking people who are resourceful, ambitious and can take the 14 . This means that a 14-year-old who sees her working future as a kind of adventure, to be made up as she goes along, is not necessarily being 15 .
However, she has to have the training and 16 to help her develop the right skills for today’s market; not the rigid (死板的) preparation for a workplace that disappeared 20 years ago. So what is to be done? Agood first step would be to change the way in which schools prepare young people for adult life. The education system is becoming less 17 and more obsessed (无法摆脱) with traditional skills at just the time that the employment market is going in the opposite direction.
Accurate, up-to-date information on new jobs and qualifications can help guidance counsellors to help their students. Young people need solid information on the sort of training they need to 18 the career of their dreams. Also, a little bit of encouragement can go a long way.
What, then, can we as parents do to help them? The best thing is to forget all the advice that our parents gave us, and step into our teenager’s shoes. Once we’ve done that, it’s easier to see how important it is that they learn how to be 19 and resourceful. Give them the courage to follow their dreams—however odd they might sound right now. In a world that offers economic security to almost no one, 20 is a terrible thing to waste.
III. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context
She wants to be a singer; you think she should go for a long-term career with job security and eventually retire with a good pension. But a new report suggests that in fact she’s the practical one. Why do parents make terrible careers 21 ?
Today’s 14 and 15-year-olds are 22 . They are optimistic about their prospects, but their career ideas are rather 23 . Although 80% of them have no intention of following in their parents’ footsteps, 69% still 24 their parents for advice. They look at their working future in a different way to their parents. A job for life is not in their vocabulary; neither is a dead-end but secure job that is 25 but pays the bills.
In the past, this might have counted as bad news. Certainly when I was 15, my guidance counselors were horrified at my plans to become a writer. I’m glad I didn’t change my plans to suit them. But the world has changed. The global economy is not 26 to yesterday’s diligent and dependable worker. The future belongs to quick-thinking people who are resourceful, ambitious and can take the initiative. This means it is not 27 being unrealistic that a 14-year-old sees her working future as a kind of 28 to be made up as she goes along.
29 , she has to have the training and guidance to help her develop the right skills for today’s market. Many young people 30 that redundancy (冗余), downsizing (裁员) and freelancing (自由职业) are all part of modern working life, but no one is telling them how they might be able to turn the new rules of the 31 game to their advantage. This is what they need to know if they are to make a life for themselves.
So what is to be done? A good first step would be to 32 the way in which schools prepare young people or adult life. The education system is becoming less flexible and sticks more to traditional skills at just the time that the job market is going in the 33 direction.
What, then, can we as parents do to help them? The best thing is to 34 all the advice that your parents gave you, and step into your teenager’s shoes. Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
A recent study has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete (混凝土) and steel can reduce emissions (排放). But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled (塑造) how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion (份额) of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest harvests between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”
36.What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger?
A.They got wrong statistics. B.They used an incorrect concept.
C.They included too many factors. D.They were applied in limited countries.
37.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The process of the new research. B.The background of the new study.
C.The challenge of the new research. D.The achievements of the new study.
38.Which is CORRECT according to the passage?
A.Using concrete and steel can reduce emissions.
B.All of timber product can can take the place of the concrete amd steel.
C.Only small part of wood can get into timber.
D.We all should use wood to build our houses.
39.What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result?

“If I only had a little humility, I’d be perfect,” the media giant Ted Turner supposedly said sometime in the1990s. Why be modest? Aristotle said: “All men by nature desire to know.” Intellectual humility is a particular instance of humility, since you can be down-to-earth about most things but still ignore your mental limitations.
Intellectual humility means recognising that we don’t know everything. Actually, it means we should acknowledge that we’re probably biased in our belief about just how much we understand and seek out the sources of wisdom that we lack.
The Internet and digital media have created the impression of limitless knowledge at our fingertips. But, by making us lazy, they have opened up a space that ignorance can fill. The psychologist Tania Lombrozo of the University of California explained how technology enhances our illusions (错觉) of wisdom. She argues that the way we access information is critical to our understanding—and the more easily we can recall an image, word or statement, the more likely we’ll think we’ve successfully learned it, and so withdraw from effortful cognitive processing. Logical puzzles presented in an unfriendly font (字体), for example, can encourage someone to make extra effort to solve them. Yet this approach runs counter to the nice designs of the apps and sites that populate our screens, where our brain processes information in a “smooth” way.
What about all the information that presents online? Well, your capacity to learn from it depends on your attitudes. Intellectually humble people don’t hide or ignore their weaknesses. In fact, they see them as sources of personal development, and use arguments as an opportunity to refine their views. People who are humble by nature tend to be more open-minded and quicker to resolve disputes, since they recognise that their own opinions might not be valid.
At the other end of the scale lies intellectual arrogance. Such arrogance almost always originates from the egocentric bias—the tendency to overestimate their own virtue or importance, ignoring the role of chance or the influence of other people’s actions on their lives. This is what makes these people credit success to themselves and failure to circumstance. From an evolutionary perspective, intellectual arrogance can also be seen as a way of achieving dominance through forcing one’s view on others. Intellectually arrogant people hardly invest mental resources in discussion or working towards group consensus, thus making it hard for groups to work successfully.
The Thrive Center for Human Development in California, which seeks to help young people turn into successful adults, is funding a series of major studies about intellectual humility. Their hypothesis is that humility, curiosity and openness are key to a fulfilling life. “Without humility, you are unable to learn,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s Head of People Operations, notes.
43.The passage is mainly about ___________.
A.the harm arrogance does to us B.the key elements to a fulfilling life
C.the significance of intellectual humility D.the way people access information online
44.Technology enhances our illusions of wisdom because it ___________.
A.enables people to think critically B.offers too much unreliable information
C.allows easy access to abundant information D.makes it hard for people to recall information
45.According to Para.4, intellectually humble people ___________.
A.prefer to solve difficult problems B.are unwilling to show their strengths
C.value others’ opinions more than their own D.use online information to better themselves
46.The author will probably agree that ___________.
A.intellectual arrogance is the result of evolution
B.intellectually arrogant people often lack team spirits
C.successful people are often unaware of their limitations
D.circumstances don’t favor intellectually arrogant people

Which Languages Take the Longest to Learn
The difficulty in learning a foreign language lies not only in its inherent complexity. The main reason a language is hard is that it is different from your own. What underlies the difficulty of such languages for an English-speaker?
The first thing many learners will think of is the writing system. 47 Chinese stands out for its difficulty. It is commonly said that a learner must memorize around 2, 000 characters to be able to read a newspaper. But even this estimate is criticized. Someone with 2, 000 characters will still have to look up unfamiliar ones in every few lines of text.
A second way languages can be hard is with sounds and distinctions that do not exist in the learner's language. To an English-speaker, the novelties include the clicks of many African languages. 48 Mandarin and Cantonese have tones, meaning ma with an even pitch and ma with a falling one are different words.
The vocabulary obviously matters too. Most European languages share an ancestor (called proto-Indo European) and so their words, too, often come in related pairs. If you know water in Spanish is agua, it is easy to figure out Italian acqua and English aquatic. Languages unrelated to the European ones (Arabic from the Semitic family, or Chinese from the Sino-Tibetan one) will not only lack the “genetic” overlap in vocabulary. 49 .
Finally, there is grammar. Many people associate tricky grammar with long lists of endings that change according to a word's use in a sentence. Many languages even feature an ending on verbs indicating how the speaker knows the information to be true.
50 If you want to learn a language just for fun, start with Swedish. If you want to accumulate an impressive number, stay in Europe. But if you really want to impress, mastering Mandarin is the sign of the true linguistic Ironman.
A.They are culturally distant, and so have far less borrowed European vocabulary too.
B.This more than anything else accounts for the difficulty of the language.
C.Indeed, none of the hardest languages is written with the Latin alphabet used by most European languages.
D.But foreign writing systems need not be difficult.
E.The overall hardness of a language can be seen as the sum of the difficulty of its writing system, sounds, words and grammar.
F.But just as hard is the problem of languages that differ from your own.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
Is fruit getting sweeter?
Is modern fruit bred to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos. In 2018, it was reported that Melbourne Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet.
Among fruit breeders, the word “quality” is now routinely used as a synonym for “high in sugar”. In 2010, a group of scientists wrote in an article that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding.” Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older cultivars.
With the rise in sweeter fruit, our expectations of how fruit should taste have also changed. Whether we are talking about apples or peaches, Europeans and Americans tend to favor fruit that is both acid and sweet, whereas in Asia, the most popular fruit is intensely sweet with hardly any acidity. In Asian countries, the “honey” flavors of low-acid peaches are much appreciated, while European consumers prefer peaches that are slightly acidic. All around the world, the common thread in what people want from fruit is sweetness.
But the excessive sweetness of modern fruit is not without its problems, especially for people with diabetes, who have to be careful to moderate their intake of higher-sugar fruits such as pineapple. Health aside, maybe the real problem with modern fruit is that it has become yet another sweet thing in a world full of sugar. Even grapefruit, which used to be encouragingly bitter, is sometimes now as sweet as oranges. Fruit that is bred for one-dimensional sweetness, as opposed to aroma or texture, denies us some of the contrast and variety of life. If you have never tasted a sour cherry, how can you fully appreciate a sweet one?

【原文】What’s your idea of a good time? What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants?
It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals.
Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular festival in the UK. It began in 1970 and the first festival was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of 1 pound — the ticket included free milk from the farm. Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength — in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying 112 pound each for a ticket to the three-day event. Tickets for the event sold out within three hours. Performers included superstars as well as new talent.
Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities.

【原文】According to a new report from the United Nations refugee agency, 3.7 million children under the U.N. agency’s care are unable to attend school. The situation gets worse as the children get older. The percentage drops from 50 percent for young children to 22 percent at secondary school age.
U.N. information also shows that only one percent of refugees attend a university, compared to 34 percent of the world’s population. As refugee children grow, their chances for education severely decrease.
The issue of providing refugees with an education is more difficult because of the expanding population and a lack of necessary financing. According to the U.N. report, the population of school-age children grew by 30 percent in 2014. That number requires an extra 20,000 teachers.
Many host nations already struggle to provide simple, but necessary services for refugees. But now, they must also find a place to hold classes and a way to purchase additional school supplies.
The report also discusses the helpful effects of education, saying it helps children avoid child labor and membership in armed groups. It also said that not providing schooling only extends conflict and leads to more people being homeless.
Questions:
14. What is the problem mentioned in the U.N. report?
15. Why is it more difficult to give refugees an education?

A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Objective.

故选A项。
38.细节理解题。根据第一段的“Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building (只有一小部分木材被制成木制品,其中的一部分被制成可以取代建筑中的混凝土和钢材的木制品)”可知,只有一小部分木头能进入木材。故选C项。
39.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.””(芬兰阿尔托大学的阿里·阿米里表示,报告中关于需求增长导致的排放的结论可能是正确的,但对于我们已经收获的木材来说,情况就不同了。

C

【答案】47.C 48.F 49.A 50.E
【导语】本文是说明文,介绍了语言学习的困难因素。
47.上文“The first thing many learners will think of is the writing system.”说明文章介绍学语言困难的第一个因素是writing system。后文“Chinese stands out for its difficulty”说明汉语难学的因素主要原因是writing system。空格处承上启下,C句“Indeed, none of the hardest languages is written with the Latin alphabet used by most European languages.(事实上,大多数欧洲语言使用的拉丁字母并不是最难的语言中的任何一种所使用的书写系统)”的“writing system”与前后文呼应。故选C。
48.根据上文“To an English-speaker, the novelties include the clicks of many African languages. ”可知语言发音的新奇性是语言学习困难的一个因素。后文“Mandarin and Cantonese”的例子说明跟母语不一样的音调也会造成学习的困难。空格处跟前文“novelty”有顺承的关系,F选项“But just as hard is the problem of languages that differ from your own.(但同样困难的是与自己母语不同的语言的问题。)”适合此处。故选F。
49.上文“Languages unrelated to the European ones will not only lack the “genetic” overlap in vocabulary”中的“not only”说明空格处与前文应该有顺承关系。A选项“They are culturally distant, and so have far less borrowed European vocabulary too.(他们在文化上相距甚远,因此也借用了较少的欧洲词汇)”能够与上文构成递进关系。故选A。
50.本段是全文中心段。空格处全文的中心句,也是对全文的总结。根据前几段首句提到的语言学习的困难因素,可以总结为“The overall hardness of a language can be seen as the sum of the difficulty of its writing system, sounds, words and grammar.(语言的整体难度可以看作是其书写系统、语音、词汇和语法的难度之和。)”故选E。

【答案】The passage discusses how modern fruit has become sweeter due to continuous breeding and selection, causing a shift in consumers' expectations of fruit taste. This trend favors high-sugar content, as seen in apple and peach varieties. However, this excessive sweetness presents problems for individuals who have diabetes and reduces the variety of fruit flavors in the modern diet.
In 2010, a group of scientists wrote in an article that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding.”
②With the rise in sweeter fruit, our expectations of how fruit should taste have also changed.
③Whether we are talking about apples or peaches, the most popular fruit is intensely sweet with hardly any acidity.
④But the excessive sweetness of modern fruit is not without its problems, especially for people with diabetes.
⑤Fruit that is bred for one-dimensional sweetness, as opposed to aroma or texture, denies us some of the contrast and variety of life.
2.缜密构思将第1、2两个要点进行整合,将第3个要点进行重组,将4、5两个要点进行整合。
3.遣词造句
The passage discusses how modern fruit has become sweeter due to continuous breeding and selection, causing a shift in consumers' expectations of fruit taste.
This trend favors high-sugar content, as seen in apple and peach varieties.
However, this excessive sweetness presents problems for individuals who have diabetes and reduces the variety of fruit flavors in the modern diet.
【点睛】[高分句型1] The passage discusses how modern fruit has become sweeter due to continuous breeding and selection, causing a shift in consumers' expectations of fruit taste.(使用了现在分词短语作状语)[高分句型2]However, this excessive sweetness presents problems for individuals who have diabetes and reduces the variety of fruit flavors in the modern diet.(使用了以individuals为先行词、关系代词who为引导词的定语从句)
V. Translation (15分)
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
52.这是他第一次一本正经地评价我的衣着。 (comment)
【答案】This/It is the first time that he has commented on / has made comments on my clothes seriously.
【详解】考查固定句式。This/It is the first time that+从句,表示“是某人第一次……”,主句是is,从句一般用现在完成时。“对…作出评价”可用固定搭配,可译成“make comments on”或“comment on”,故“这是他第一次一本正经地评价我的衣着。”可译为“This/It is the first time that he has commented on / has made comments on my clothes seriously”。
53.人们通过在微信上分享照片让亲朋好友了解他们的近况。(keep)
【答案】People keep their relatives and friends informed of their recent situations by sharing photos on WeChat.
【详解】考查动词短语和非谓语动词。根据所给中文提示词,主语是“人们”译为“people”,“让某人了解某事”用短语keep sb informed of sth,描述的是客观事实,用一般现在时,“亲朋好友”译为“their relatives and friends”,“他们的近况”,译为“their recent situations”,“通过在微信上分享照片”可用介词短语by doing sth.译为“by sharing photos on WeChat”。故译为:People keep their relatives and friends informed of their recent situations by sharing photos on WeChat.
54.所有飞往西班牙的乘客请等候,何时出发另行通知。(notice)
【答案】All passengers flying to Spain please wait until further notice.
All passengers flying to Spain please wait until further notice.
55.我们都没有想到,那个曾经腼腆的男孩竟然能在演讲比赛中一举夺魁。 (It)
【答案】It never occurred to us that the boy who used to be/was shy should win the first prize in the speech contest.
【详解】考查时态、固定句型、定语从句。it occurs to sb that “(某人)想到……”为固定句型,结合句意“我们都没有想到”可知,事情发生在过去,故时态用一般过去时,故用It never occurred to us that,其中It为形式主语,that引导主语从句。主语从句中,表示“那个男孩竟然能在演讲比赛中一举夺魁”用the boy should win the first prize in the speech contest。表示“曾经腼腆的”用定语从句who used to be/was shy,先行词是the boy,关系词在从句中作主语,用关系代词who引导。故翻译为It never occurred to us that the boy who used to be/was shy should win the first prize in the speech contest.

【答案】Dear James,
I understand the frustration you’re feeling about your parents not supporting your participation in volunteer activities. It’s a common challenge for many students to balance their academic responsibilities with extracurricular interests.
My suggestion is to approach your parents with a well-thought-out plan. Explain to them how volunteering can actually complement your studies. For instance, through volunteer work, you can develop important life skills such as time management, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are all valuable both academically and in later life.
Moreover, you could propose a compromise. Offer to dedicate specific times to volunteering, while ensuring that your study schedule remains a priority. Show them through your actions that you can manage both effectively.
Remember to be respectful and understanding of their concerns. With patience and a clear plan, you might be able to change their perspective.
Best regards,
