D 12. B 13. D
Six-year-old Ismail Zulfic was born with no arms, but that doesn’t prevent him from swimming better than normal kids.
Zulfic used to be scared of going into the water after an incident in a splash pool. He even refused to get into the water for regular therapy on his back, which he needed in order to be able to feed himself and write.
But all of that changed when the little boy met Amel Kapo, a swimming coach. He set up a local swimming club after noticing how disabled kids struggled to swim in pools, where there was no special equipment for them.
Kapo is the one who taught Zulfic to swim. After a few months of practice, the little boy was able to dive in and swim the length of an Olympic-sized pool without any help. A year later, Zulfic is like a fish in the water. He even won a gold medal in a local swimming competition for disabled people, finishing well ahead of other swimmers, and some were nearly twice his age.
Zulfic’s parents never dreamed that their shy boy would become a medal-winning swimmer. “I’m proud of my kid. He has a strong winning spirit, and he hardly accepts any defeat and does everything to win,” said his mother.
This butterfly without wings shows that desire, will and perseverance are things that really pay off. Zulfic also hopes to compete in Para-swimming competition on the world stage in the future.
Questions:
11. What probably caused Zulfic to feel scared of water in the past?
12. Why did Kapo set up a local swimming club?

A company called Volterman has recently released a smart wallet that takes security to the extreme. It comes with a built-in alarm system, a GPS tracker, and even a front facing camera that takes photos of whoever tries to open it, and sends them to the owner.
Wallets almost seem outdated in this digital age, but the smart wallet isn’t your average wallet. Apart from the screen, it packs about as much technology as your smart phone, including a built-in camera, a power bank, a GPS tracker, an alarm system, and even Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities. It may look like a simple leather wallet on the outside, but it’s a whole different one on the inside.
Perhaps the most unusual feature of the smart wallet is the built-in front-facing camera. When in “lost mode”, the wallet will take pictures whenever someone tries to open it, and the wallet sends the pictures to the owner by connecting to the Internet. This feature is listed as optional, so would-be customers concerned about privacy issues needn’t be worried.
“If someone dares to open your wallet without your permission, the little camera will take a picture and send it to your mobile phone,” said the founder of Volterman. “We have developed a wallet, which doesn’t get lost. Once your wallet is stolen, you will find it easily by receiving the picture of the thief.”
Questions:
14. What does the smart wallet look like on the outside?
15. What will happen when the wallet is stolen?
16. Which of the following statements is true of the smart wallet?
16. What does the report mainly tell us about the GCSEs?
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
17. A. 30%. B. 24%. C. 96%. D. 50%.
18. A. He nearly became blind. B. His vision became even worse.
C. He couldn’t see very well at night. D. His eyes were dry for several months.
19. A. Nervous. B. Regretful. C. Painful. D. Relaxed.
20. A. Laser surgery is safe despite its side effects.
B. Two weeks’ home rest is required after the surgery.
C. The cost of the surgery is too high for ordinary people.
D. People with poor vision are all good candidates for the surgery.
C 18. C 19. A 20. A
M: Grace! What are you doing at work? Didn’t you just have laser surgery?
W: Yes, Jason! My vision is normal now. I don’t need to wear glasses any more. You should consider it.
M: I don’t know if I’m ready for it. But shouldn’t you be home resting?
W: Actually, after 24 hours almost half of the patients go back to work.
M: I can’t imagine someone cutting my eyes with a laser. Sounds dangerous.
W: Nah. Over 30 million people have had laser surgery. The success rate is very high.
M: It still sounds scary.
W: Honestly, I was a little nervous before the surgery, but it was close to painless.
M: That’s because they put something in your eyes so you couldn’t feel anything. That worries me. I hear that there can be side effects such as dry eyes.
W: There can be some, but they are rare. I was just uncomfortable for a day or so. But I see much better now.
M: But I’m still concerned about the risks. What if my vision becomes worse or I lose it completely? I don’t want to go blind.
W: You worry too much. Ninety-six percent of patients gain their ideal eyesight from this surgery.
M: Doesn’t your night vision suffer? My uncle had to stop driving at night after his laser surgery.
W: Yes. It’s a little difficult to see at night, but once my eyes recover completely, I’ll be fine. Really, the surgery is safe.
M: What about the cost? I hear it’s expensive.
W: The cost was totally worth it. I suggest you talk to your eye doctor to find out if you are a good candidate. That will help you decide whether to get the surgery or not.
M: We’ll see.
Questions:
17. What’s the success rate of the laser surgery?
18. What side effect did Jason’s uncle suffer after the laser surgery?
19. How did Grace feel before the surgery?
20. What can we learn from Grace about the surgery?

blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Sharing the sweetness
On the 25th of December, my mother expects her children to be present, exchanging gifts and eating turkey. When she pulls on that holiday sweater, everybody better gets festive. Of course, I would be the first Jones sibling ___1___ (go) rogue (叛逆). As the middle, artist child, I was going to do my own thing, making some new traditions. From a biography of Flannery O’Connor, I drew inspiration— I would spend the holiday at an artist colony!
No one took my new idea seriously. From the way my mother carried on, you would think I was divorcing the family. Still I held my ground and made plans for my winter adventure in New Hampshire. The MacoDowell Colony was ___2___ I could have wished for. About 25 to 30 artists were in attendance, and it was as artsy (艺术的) as I ___3___ (imagine). It felt like my life had become a strange independent film.
By Christmas Eve, I had been at the colony for more than a week. The novelty of snowy New England was wearing off, but I would never admit ___4___. Everyone around me was having too much fun. Skiing! Deep conversation by the fireplace! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday ___5___ I’d always dreamed of. No artificial decoration. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas,” they said “holiday.” Then why was I so sad?
Finally, I called home on the pay phone. My dad answered, but I ___6___ barely hear him for all the good-time noise in the background. He turned down the volume on the holiday album and told me that my mother was out shopping with my brothers. Now it was my turn to sulk (生闷气). They were having a fine Christmas ___7___ me.
Despite a heavy snowstorm, a large package showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. Tayari Jones was written in my mother’s beautiful handwriting. I rushed to that parcel ____8____ ____8_____I were five years old. Inside was a gorgeous red-velvet cake, my favorite, ___9___ (wrap) tightly in about 50 yards of bubble packaging. “Merry Christmas,” read the simple card inside. “We love you very much.”
As I sliced the cake, everyone gathered around. Mother had sent a genuine homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our bare hands, ___10___(satisfy) a hunger we didn’t know we had.
1. to go 2. what/everything 3. had imagined 4. it/ that 5. which/ that 6. could 7. without 8. as if/ as though 9. wrapped 10. satisfying

The Problem of Totally Epic Language Inflation
Stan Carey recently wrote a short blog about language inflation, which ultimately creates devaluation in meaning. Today, popular expressions like epic and brilliant are used to express a more 11 meaning than their traditional uses. Brilliant actually means clever, and epic actually means surprising. Such is our desire to elevate words with power and importance, that we use hyperbole (夸张) to draw attention.
The same tendency can be seen in numbers as well. Once giving 110% became cliché, people started insisting that they give 210%, 310%, and on and on. To create even more 12 behind the phrase, people will also throw in a literally. I literally gave 210%.
This is no new trend. My generation destroyed words like awesome and totally. My parents and grandparents 13 of meaning words like incredible, wonderful, and fantastic.
Irish novelist C. S. Lewis expressed concern over language inflation: “Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise, you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.”
And this is 14 where we find ourselves right now. We have no words 15 when we want to say that something truly is awe-inspiring.
This can also make it all the more difficult for modern readers to connect with older books. Particularly, it can cheapen our understanding of the Scriptures (圣经). As a child of the 80s, I was never at 16 calling God awesome, because as far as I knew, it meant something much less great. If my sunglasses are totally awesome, I need some other word for God!
Our souls are 17 in the current culture. We neglect the spiritual aspects of our own existence more and more. It makes sense that the language would reflect that as well. Caring 18 for our physical needs, we run across fewer moments that inspire us with true awe. Those emotions would require a(n) 19 with the significant and the time to contemplate (沉思) it.
But who’s got the time or the desire for that? We’ll settle for (将就) pretty good experiences and call them totally 20 .

Why girls do better at school than boys?
For centuries, boys were top of the class. But these days, that’s no longer the case. A new study by the OECD, a club of mostly 21 countries in Europe and North America, examined how 15-year-old boys and girls performed at reading, mathematics and science. Boys still get somewhat better 22 at maths and physics, and in other science courses the genders are roughly 23 . But when it comes to the students who really struggle and suffer at school, the difference is 24 : boys are 50% more likely than girls to fall short of basic standards in all three areas. 25 , why are girls performing better at school than their male classmates?
First, girls read more than boys. Reading proficiency (熟练) is the basis upon which all other learning is built. When boys don’t do well in reading, their 26 in other school subjects suffers too. Second, girls spend much more time on their homework and out-of-class learning. 27 , girls spend five and a half hours per week doing homework while boys spend a little less than four and a half hours. Researchers suggest that doing homework 28 by teachers is linked to better accomplishment in maths, reading and science. Boys, it appears, spend more of their free time in the 29 world; they are 17% more likely to play cooperative online games than girls every day. They also use the internet more.
Third, peer 30 plays a role. A lot of boys decide early on that they are just too cool for school. They adopt a so-called concept of masculinity (男子气概) that includes a disregard for 31 , which means they’re more likely to be rude and noisy in class. Teachers mark them down for this. In anonymous (匿名的) tests, boys perform better. In fact, the gender gap in reading 32 by a third when teachers don’t know the gender of the pupil they are marking.
So what can be done to close this gap? Getting boys to do more homework and cut down on screen-time would help. And offering boys a 33 to read non-fiction would help too: they’re keener on comics and newspapers. But most of all, abandoning gender stereotypes (旧模式) would 34 all students. Thus, boys in all countries with the best schools read much better than girls. As we know, girls in Shanghai, Singapore and Seoul are good at mathematics, and they 35 boys from anywhere else in the world.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscale Koramangala district of Bangalore, India.
“Their feet were bare. Cracked. Hard. Dirty. Bleeding,” reflects Sia, now 17. “They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.” And it was at that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege. Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomized (体现) by its motto: “Donate a sole, save a soul.”
The idea, which started as a dinner conversation with her parents, quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters and WhatsApp groups, enquiries from people who wanted to help came flooding in. For months, Sia was juggling schoolwork and her new passion project. “I was up till 2 a.m. creating Excel sheets to see which apartment buildings we could tackle for donations and contacting people.”
In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number stands at around 28,000 across four countries, including the United States, China and Liberia, thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers.
But the organization’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. When it came to looking for collaborators, such as a company that would do the repairs and clean up the footwear to look like new free of charge, Sia faced one obstacle after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler.
“Being a 13-year-old, I did face a lot of bias because at my age, people were less willing to hear me out,” says Sia.
In recognition of her impact, in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, given to people aged 9 to 25 in memory of the late Princess of Wales. Awarded by a UK-based charity of the same name, it’s one of the most prestigious honours a young person can receive for social action or humanitarian work. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says.
36.The underlined word “upscale” most probably means __________.
A.humble B.abandoned C.energetic D.prosperous
37.One of the biggest challenges of Sole Warriors is that __________.
A.local people lacked trust in and patience with teenagers like Sia
B.just about 80 volunteers came to help Sia in the organization’s infancy
C.few companies are willing to do the repairs without financial incentives
D.Sia is not good at operating the organization due to her lack of experience
38.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.All for one, one for all B.Walking in someone else’s shoes
C.Where there is a will, there is a way D.Nothing ventured, nothing gained
39.Which group of words can best describe Sia’s qualities?
A.Patient, self-disciplined and modest. B.Curious, generous and knowledgeable.
C.Energetic, ambitious and sympathetic. D.Sensitive, independent and passionate.
根据第二段中““Their feet were bare. Cracked. Hard. Dirty. Bleeding,” reflects Sia, now 17. “They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for them.” And it was at that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege.
根据第五段中“When it came to looking for collaborators, such as a company that would do the repairs and clean up the footwear to look like new free of charge, Sia faced one obstacle after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler. (在寻找合作伙伴时,比如找一家愿意免费修理和清理鞋子的公司,让鞋子看起来像新的,Sia遇到了一个又一个障碍,最后才找到了印度的Pressto Cobbler合作伙伴)”可知,Sole Warriors面临的最大挑战之一是,很少有公司愿意在没有经济激励的情况下修理鞋子。故选C项。
38.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomized (体现) by its motto: “Donate a sole, save a soul.”
根据第二段中“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need (那年晚些时候,在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下,Sia成立了Sole Warriors,这是一家致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子的慈善机构)”可知,Sia成立慈善机构,帮助有需要的人,她的富有同情心的。根据第三段中“For months, Sia was juggling schoolwork and her new passion project. “I was up till 2 a.m. creating Excel sheets to see which apartment buildings we could tackle for donations and contacting people.” (好几个月来,Sia一直在学业和她投入激情的新项目之间忙碌。“我直到凌晨2点才睡,制作Excel表格,看看我们可以处理哪些公寓楼的捐款,并与人们联系。”)”可知,Sia积极忙于自己的新项目,干劲十足,她是精力充沛的。根据最后一段中“But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says. (但她的工作还没有完成。她说:“我们的目标一直是达到100万只鞋。”)”可知,Sia想要继续自己的事业,帮助更多的人,她有远大的抱负。故选C项。

We are encountering real-world examples of how AI can harm human relations. As digital assistants such as Alexa or Siri become popular, we are becoming accustomed to talking to them as though they were alive; writing in these pages last year, Judith Shulevitz described how some of us are starting to treat them as friends and therapists. Shulevitz herself says she confesses things to Google Assistant that she wouldn’t tell her husband. If we grow more comfortable talking to our devices about our secrets, what happens to our human marriages and friendships? Designers and programmers typically create devices whose responses make us feel better—but may not help us be self-reflective or think over painful truths. As AI goes deeper into our lives, we must face the possibility that it will prevent our emotions and deep human connects.
Besides, we will fight with some other challenges. The age of driverless cars, after all, is upon us. These vehicles promise to substantially reduce the exhaustion and distraction that put human drivers in danger, thus preventing accidents. But what other effects might they have on people? Driving is a very modern kind of social interaction, requiring high levels of cooperation. I worry that driverless cars, by taking away from us an occasion to exercise this ability, could contribute to its decline.
Not only will these vehicles be programmed to take over driving duties and hence to remove from humans the power to make moral judgments (for example, about which pedestrian to hit when a crash is inevitable), they will also affect humans with whom they’ve had no direct contact. For instance, drivers who have steered awhile alongside an autonomous vehicle traveling at a steady, invariant speed might drive less attentively, thus increasing their likelihood of accidents once they’ve moved to a part of the highway occupied only by human drivers. Alternatively, experience may reveal that driving alongside autonomous vehicles travelling in perfect accordance with traffic laws actually improves human performance.
Either way, we should be careful to launch new forms of AI without first taking such social spillovers—or externalities, as they’re often called—into account. We must apply the same effort that we apply to the hardware and software that make self-driving cars possible to managing AI’s potential effects on those outside the car. After all, we install brake lights on the back of your car not just, or even primarily, for your benefit, but for the sake of the people behind you.
43.What can be inferred about human relationships from the first paragraph?
A.We will feel comfortable speaking to others online.
B.AI will lead to shallow inter-personal relationships.
C.AI will enable people to communicate more with others.
D.We will be more self-reflective in interaction thanks to AI.
44.In paragraph 2, the phrase “its decline” refers to the decline in ________.
A.drivers’ interaction with the cars
B.drivers’ exhaustion and distraction
C.our ability to cooperate with others while driving
D.our ability to deal with emergencies while driving
45.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of driverless cars?
A.They may be better at making more judgments than human drivers.
B.They need to vary their speed to make contact with human drivers.
C.They may make human drivers in other cars drive more safely.
D.They need to force human drivers to concentrate in the car.
46.Which of the following is the writer most likely to agree with?
A.Brake lights on the back of our car are installed mainly to warn us of danger.
B.We should figure out how new technology affects people before developing it.
C.It is hard to say why social spillovers will work in terms of self-driving cars.
D.More effort should be made to advance the hardware and software of driverless cars.
根据文章第一段“As AI goes deeper into our lives, we must face the possibility that it will prevent our emotions and deep human connects. (随着人工智能深入我们的生活,我们必须面对这样一种可能性,即它将阻止我们的情感和深层次的人际联系。)”可知,作者认为人工智能会阻止我们和身边的人进行更深层次的联系。也就是说,人工智能会导致人与人之间的联系变得越来越肤浅、浅显。故选B项。
44.词义猜测题。根据文章第二段“I worry that driverless cars, by taking away from us an occasion to exercise this ability, could contribute to its decline.(我担心,无人驾驶汽车夺走了我们锻炼这种能力的机会,可能会导致这种它的衰落。)” 再根据前文“But what other effects might they have on people? Driving is a very modern kind of social interaction, requiring high levels of cooperation.(但它们还会对人类产生什么影响呢?开车是一种非常现代的社会互动,需要高度的合作。)”可知,“this ability”指的是“high levels of cooperation”,即开车时的合作能力。故选C项。
根据文章第三段“For instance, drivers who have steered awhile alongside an autonomous vehicle traveling at a steady, invariant speed might drive less attentively, thus increasing their likelihood of accidents once they’ve moved to a part of the highway occupied only by human drivers. Alternatively, experience may reveal that driving alongside autonomous vehicles travelling in perfect accordance with traffic laws actually improves human performance.( 例如,在一辆以稳定不变速度行驶的自动驾驶汽车旁边驾驶了一段时间的司机可能会不太注意驾驶,因此,一旦他们行驶到只有人类司机占据的高速公路路段,发生事故的可能性就会增加。经验表明,与完全遵守交通法规行驶的自动驾驶汽车并排行驶实际上会提高人的表现。)”可知,无人驾驶汽车能降低其他车辆中的司机出现交通事故的概率,也就是说它们能使人类驾驶员在其他车辆中更安全。故选C项。
46.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“We must apply the same effort that we apply to the hardware and software that make self-driving cars possible to managing AI’s potential effects on those outside the car. After all, we install brake lights on the back of your car not just, or even primarily, for your benefit, but for the sake of the people behind you.(我们必须付出使自动驾驶汽车成为可能的硬件和软件所付出的同样努力,来管理人工智能对车外人员的潜在影响。毕竟,我们在你的车后面安装刹车灯不仅仅是,甚至主要不是为了你的利益,而是为了你后面的人。)”可知,作者认为对于自动驾驶汽车,我们应该努力提高它的硬件和软件,让它更加安全。故选D项。

Mentally strong people are able to deal with and recover from even the most terrible conditions. To develop your mental strength, here are some suggestions.
Believe in yourself
You’ve made it this far. 47 . Hold on to it even one more moment, and you can survive whatever you’re going through. It won’t be easy, so when you feel like you’re about to fall apart, close your eyes, take a deep breath and remind yourself you can do it.
Rediscover your interest in life
Emotionally strong people view each day as a gift. They try to structure themselves so that the gift is taken advantage of fully. 48 — playing with leaves in the fall, drawing a small animal, or eating a sweet. Find that inner child. Be that inner child. Your ability to be mentally and emotionally strong depends on it.
49
Does every little thing anger you? Ask yourself why and whether these little things matter. Try cutting your life down to a few key values that mean the world to you, and don’t worry about anything else. As Sylvia Robinson once said, “Some people think it’s holding on that makes one strong — sometimes it’s letting go.”
Reach out to those who mean the most to you
Spend time with friends and family, along with others who are supportive and positive. If no one is available, make new friends. And if there are no friends to be found, help others who are in greater need. 51 .
A.Pick your fights wisely
B.Be thankful for what you have
C.Tell yourself you can make it through just one more day
D.You can find strengths in bettering someone else’s life
E.It’s enough to make you find out how strangely unlucky you are
F.Remember when you were a child, you could get excited by the simplest wonders of life
【答案】47.C 48.F 49.A 50.D
47.根据上文“You’ve made it this far. (你已经走到这一步了)”以及下文“Hold on to it even one more moment, and you can survive whatever you’re going through. (哪怕再多坚持一会儿,你就能熬过你正在经历的一切。)”可知,此处是说你已经走到这一步了,再坚持一下,就能熬过去,C项“告诉自己再坚持一天就能成功”符合语境,故选C。
48.根据下文“playing with leaves in the fall, drawing a small animal, or eating a sweet. Find that inner child. Be that inner child. (在秋天玩树叶,画一只小动物,或者吃一颗糖。找到你内心的孩子。做那个内心的孩子。)”可知,此处是说孩童时代会因一些小事感到快乐,现在找到并在内心做那个孩子,G项“当你还是个孩子的时候,你会对生活中最简单的事感到兴奋。”符合语境,破折号后的“playing with leaves in the fall, drawing a small animal, or eating a sweet”是对G项中“the simplest wonders of life”举例说明,故选F。
49.根据本段中“Try cutting your life down to a few key values that mean the world to you, and don’t worry about anything else. As Sylvia Robinson once said, ‘Some people think it’s holding on that makes one strong — sometimes it’s letting go.’ (试着把你的生活精简到几个对你来说最重要的关键价值观,不要担心其他任何事情。正如Sylvia Robinson曾经说过的,‘有些人认为是坚持让一个人变得坚强——有时候是放手。’)”可知,本段主要是说要选择重要的事情,而放手其他的事情,A项“明智地选择困扰你的事情”适合作为小标题,故选A。
50.上文“And if there are no friends to be found, help others who are in greater need. (如果找不到朋友,那就帮助那些更需要帮助的人。)”提到去帮助别人,D项“你可以在帮改善别人生活的过程中发现优点”符合语境,D项中“bettering someone else’s life ”呼应上文的“help others”,故选D。
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
These days our society develops rapidly and forces people to rush. It appears that people have got used to being in a hurry. However, it is better for people to take their time and live their life at a slower pace than to hurry to get things done.
The main reason that convinces us to oppose doing work in a hurry is the possibility of doing wrongs in a rush. When people do their jobs or take actions in a hurry, they cannot make a sound decision and probably regret later. As the saying goes, “Haste makes waste. ” We should think carefully before making a decision and do our work less quickly. We should not make mistakes by doing work hurriedly.
Slowing down the pace of life helps people enjoy their life better. For example, taking a train to some place certainly will take more time than taking a plane. However, taking a train makes people have enough time to get to know a lot of new friends. Besides, it allows people to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. On the contrary, being in a hurry will make us lose chances in enjoying our life.
Finally, slower life pace provides better healthy conditions for us. As is known to all, taking actions in a hurry bothers people and raises their stress. People think if they are not in a hurry, they will become a loser and that annoys them. Being in a hurry can hurt people both physically and mentally. According to some studies, people who have a slower pace suffer fewer diseases, tend to be happier and live much longer than those whose life is tense, even if the former finish jobs more slowly than the latter.
In short, working quickly will bring about more material benefits to make our society more advanced. However, much stress can’t bring enjoyment, friends and health, which are much more important than money and other material advantages. Therefore, take your time and live your life at a slower pace.
51._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To live life at a slower pace is better than to live life in a hurry because doing things hurriedly will lead to the possible of making mistakes. Moreover, slowing down the pace of life will give people more chances to enjoy life and better health conditions, which are much more important than material things working quickly brings.

Dear principal,
I’m Li Hua, a senior high 2 student of our school. I’m glad to learn that the school plan to organize all the students of our grade to go to many out-of-town schools for a study tour this term. As for the two organizational projects proposed by the school, I suggest that students apply for the schools they want to go to and that our school make overall arrangements according to the number of applicants. The reasons why I choose this project are as follows.
First of all, allowing students to choose schools by themselves can help stimulate their enthusiasm and increase their desire to study. Secondly, students can learn the knowledge and relevant information of the school they want to go to in advance so as to make full preparation for the study. Last but not least, our school can make various arrangements ahead of time according to the number of students applying to ensure the smooth progress of study tour.
If you could take my advice into account, I would appreciate it.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A.local people lacked trust in and patience with teenagers like Sia
B.just about 80 volunteers came to help Sia in the organization’s infancy
C.few companies are willing to do the repairs without financial incentives
D.Sia is not good at operating the organization due to her lack of experience
38.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.All for one, one for all B.Walking in someone else’s shoes
C.Where there is a will, there is a way D.Nothing ventured, nothing gained

Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Mentally strong people are able to deal with and recover from even the most terrible conditions.
B.Be thankful for what you have
C.Tell yourself you can make it through just one more day
D.You can find strengths in bettering someone else’s life
E.It’s enough to make you find out how strangely unlucky you are
F.Remember when you were a child, you could get excited by the simplest wonders of life
