B The fear of rejection is one of my biggest fears, right after long-legged and fast moving insects. I had so many experiences of crawling into my head in a crowded space with constant self-conscious thoughts about not fitting in, constantly feeling like someone was only looking at me because I had something on my face, which made me stressed. So keeping myself in a safe zone and doing things that I knew I cloud perform well on was my favorite pastime. But I had to step out sooner or later, with the first important out-of-my-comfort-zone experience applying to college. I applied to many colleges. When I received my first college rejection I remember my face was surely red and my heart was pounding out of my chest while I waited for the school internet to connect faster. I opened the portal (入口) and when the letter started with “Thank you for your application to our university. After a careful review…” I felt my face growing hotter. This fear was applicable anywhere else: fear of getting rejected from a job offer, fear of having the project or ideas rejected, or even the fear of being rejected from a friend group, among so many other situations. Because of this fear, I missed out on so many opportunities to grow. This fear hung over me until I conversed quite by accident with my teacher, Mr Smith, who was a very understanding person, and told him my inner thoughts. He told me everything we did had rejection attached to it in some way. Receiving rejections did not mean we’re not good enough, but meant that we tried our best for the time being. Being rejected was terrible while but for experiencing the scariness, we would not grow or even succeed. When we succeeded in whatever we did, the reward tasted sweeter than something that was easily obtained. I decided to be comfortable with this fear. Now, the result does get easier; I am annoyed at the rejection less, being able to bounce back and submit another application quicker. Along the journey of rejections, I realized that I wasn’t incapable but could gain a lot during the process. And that was enough. 4. What strategy did the author initially adopt to avoid the fear of rejection? A. Performing the things easily done. B. Facing the fear of rejection actively. C. Stepping out of the comfortable zone. D. Taking on stressful tasks continuously. 5. How did the author feel when checking the first college reply? A. Pleased but anxious. B. Concerned and nervous. C. Excited but uneasy. D. Relieved and calm. 6. What changed the author’s attitude to the fear of rejection? A. A heated debate. B. An insightful class. C. An unexpected talk. D. A painful experience. 7. What can we learn from the author’s experiences with rejections? A. Practice makes perfect. B. No rainbow without rain. C. Strike while the iron is hot. D. Opportunity knocks but once. C Recently, a landmark study has revealed that many fruits and vegetables contain less protein, iron and vitamin C than they did in the 1950s, though carbohydrates (碳水化合物) levels have increased. Researchers believe a crucial factor for this phenomenon is the rising CO2 levels in Earth’s changing atmosphere. Within the next 50 years, CO2 concentrations are expected to reach 550 parts per million, which is almost double the amount measured before the mid-19th century. Research shows that increased CO2 levels will affect 95 percent of plant species by causing essential mineral levels to drop by 6 to 8 percent. Though this decrease may sound negligible, it will have far-reaching consequences for global health. The impacts of an increasingly carbon-concentrated atmosphere were first observed in zooplankton (浮游动物), tiny sea creatures that primarily feed on algae (海藻). Scientists found that shining lights on water caused more algae to grow in it, which should have benefited the hungry zooplankton. Instead, the zooplankton struggled to survive. That’s because the algae grew faster at a lower nutritional quality. In other words, the lower-nutrition algae restricted the zooplankton’s ability to multiply. Similarly, the land plants, which rely on both light and CO2 to grow, also experienced a decreased nutritional value with rising CO2 levels, as land plants can more easily transform sunlight and CO2 into higher concentration of carbohydrates at the expense of protein, iron and other essential nutrients. Will the increase of carbohydrates and consequent decrease of other nutrients in your meals make a difference to your health? Nutrient-rich plants are critical for tackling health problems around the world, and lower levels of nutrients put fragile populations at risk. For instance, estimates show that 150 million people may be at risk for protein deficiency (不足) by 2050, and iron deficiency may affect a billion pregnant women within the same time frame. Increasing CO2 levels will cause chain effects throughout the ecosystem in ways scientists can’t anticipate. 8. What can we know from the study? A. Foods consist of less nutrients nowadays. B. The rising CO2 level may lead to nutrient loss. C. Carbohydrates levels in foods decrease greatly. D. The Earth’s atmosphere keeps stable at present. 9. What does the underlined word “negligible” mean in paragraph 2? A. Avoidable. B. Messurable. C. Insignificant. D. Unmanageable. 10. What is a possible impact of increased CO2 level? A. The algae multiplies quickly. B. The zooplankton survives better. C. Land plants become more nutritious. D. People enjoy better physical condition. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. Chain effects taking place in the ecosystem. B. Physical problems impacting people by 2050. C. Health risks generated by the rise of CO2 level. D. Nutrient deficiencies caused by the lack of plants. D Fruit flies have attracted brain scientists for decades because the insects’ small brains are capable of complex behaviors, like flying, fighting, and even mating (求偶) singing. For example, when a male fruit fly sings a love song to a potential mate, he freestyles, says Mala Murthy, a professor of neuroscience (神经科学) at Princeton University. “He chooses exactly what to sing based on feedback from the female fly.” she says. To understand how the neurons in a fruit fly do so much, you need to know how they’re connected, Murthy says. “If you’re trying to figure out how the brain generates viewpoints, thoughts, actions,” she says, “you really need to understand how information flows from sensory receptors to the motor outputs of the brain.” So Murthy and her colleague Sebastian Seung led a team of scientists to learn how a healthy brain’s wiring influences its function. They also hope to understand how “miswiring” leads to disordered conditions ranging from autism (自闭症) to Alzheimer’s. In 2018 scientists at the Janelia Research Campus publicized more than 20 million images of brain areas in a single female fruit fly. The Princeton scientists thought they could gather those images in a way that would display all the wiring between neurons. “If you want to track the wires of the brain, you’ve got to color inside the lines, but it would take tens of thousands of years for a single person to finish it.” The team used computers and the artificial intelligence (AI) to speed things up. Even so, the brain map it produced still had disadvantages. “So a team of human experts had to go in and correct the errors of the artificial intelligence,” Seung says. Eventually, they produced an accurate, noted map of all 50 million connections in a fruit fly brain. The new map is an important step for the field but scientists still need to learn how neuron wiring differ from fly to fly. 12. What has attracted brain scientists for decades concerning fruit flies? A. Their freestyle. B. Their mating. C. Their brains’ size. D. Their brains’ function. 13. What may brain miswiring result in? A. Some mental illness. B. The information flow. C. A healthy brain’s death. D. The brain’s high function. 14. What was AI used to do in the research? A. Map the brain wiring. B. Display neurons in brains. C. Solve the brain miswiring. D. Clear the lines inside brains. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The art of insects’ singing B. The secret of insects’ brains C. Explore fruit flies’ behaviors D. Draw fruit flies’ brain miswiring Running your own business out of your college dorm room might seem like a difficult task to some, but not to Humphrey. The two teenagers coming from the quiet suburbs of Illinois, had never seen the vast ocean. So they were eagerly waiting for their first swimming experience in the vast, open ocean. When they got to the beach, they noticed that no one else was in the water, and that the waves were huge. The sight of the big waves might have frightened others, but that didn’t bother Denise. She had seen in the movies people body surfing and having fun in big waves. She thought it looked amazing and she believed that she could do the same. At that moment, the only soul in sight was a local fisherman who was cleaning his fishing net on the sand. As Denise and her friend began taking off their shoes, the fisherman stopped, his eyes widening in astonishment as he stared at the two girls preparing to brave the waves. He could not believe that someone would dare to swim in such waves. Denise thought it was a bit rude of this strange fisherman to just stand there staring, but she said nothing since she couldn’t help but to jump into the vast ocean. Seeing the waves, Denise’s friend felt a bit scared, so she refused to go swimming with Denise. With a heart jumping and spirits high, Denise alone rushed into the water without a second thought. But as soon as she got into the ocean, she was struck by a huge, powerful wave. Denise was completely helpless. She was swirling (旋转) around in that powerful water, choking on a mixture of salt, water, and sand. Every breath was a struggle. As the wave finally released its hold, Denise found herself struggling to stay afloat (漂浮的). All she could hear was her friend’s scream. Her mind was racing with thoughts of survival and the distant hope that somehow, somehow, she would make it back to shore. Just then the fisherman ran up without hesitation. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Making sure Denise was safe, the fisherman simply turned around and was about to leave. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 山东名校考试联盟 2024—2025学年高三年级上学期期中检测 英语试题 2024.11 本试卷共12页。 1. When I received my first college rejection, I remember my face was surely red and my heart was pounding out of my chest while I waited for the school internet to connect faster. A 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段“So keeping myself in a safe zone and doing things that I knew I cloud perform well on was my favorite pastime.(所以,让自己呆在一个安全的地方,做一些我知道自己能做好的事情,是我最喜欢的消遣。)” 故选A。 根据第二段“When I received my first college rejection, I remember my face was surely red and my heart was pounding out of my chest while I waited for the school internet to connect faster.(当我第一次收到大学拒绝信时,我记得我的脸肯定是红的,我的心砰砰直跳,我等待着学校的互联网连接快一点。)” 根据倒数第二段“This fear hung over me until I conversed quite by accident with my teacher, Mr Smith, who was a very understanding person, and told him my inner thoughts.(这种恐惧一直笼罩着我,直到一次偶然的机会,我和我的老师史密斯先生交谈,他是一个非常通情达理的人,我把我内心的想法告诉了他。)” 通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I decided to be comfortable with this fear. Now, the result does get easier; I am annoyed at the rejection less, being able to bounce back and submit another application quicker. Along the journey of rejections, I realized that I wasn’t incapable but could gain a lot during the process.(我决定坦然面对这种恐惧。现在,结果确实变得简单了;我对被拒绝的烦恼减少了,可以更快地回复并提交另一份申请。在被拒绝的过程中,我意识到我并不是无能为力,而是可以在这个过程中收获很多。)”可知,本文主要讲的是作者如何克服对被拒绝的恐惧,以及这一过程中个人的成长和收获,因此我们能从作者被拒绝的经历中学到不经历风雨,怎见彩虹,即No rainbow without rain。故选B。 C Recently, a landmark study has revealed that many fruits and vegetables contain less protein, iron and vitamin C than they did in the 1950s, though carbohydrates (碳水化合物) levels have increased. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第三段“Similarly, the land plants, which rely on both light and CO 2  to grow, also experienced a decreased nutritional value with rising CO 2  levels, as land plants can more easily transform sunlight and CO 2  into higher concentration of carbohydrates at the expense of protein, iron and other essential nutrients.(同样,依靠光和二氧化碳生长的陆地植物也经历了随着二氧化碳水平上升而下降的营养价值,因为陆地植物可以更容易地将阳光和二氧化碳转化为更高浓度的碳水化合物,而牺牲蛋白质、铁和其他必需营养素)”可知,我们可以从研究中了解到二氧化碳浓度的上升可能导致营养物质的流失。 根据第三段“The impacts of an increasingly carbon-concentrated atmosphere were first observed in zooplankton (浮游动物), tiny sea creatures that primarily feed on algae (海藻). Scientists found that shining lights on water caused more algae to grow in it, which should have benefited the hungry zooplankton.(大气中碳浓度增加的影响首先在浮游动物身上观察到,浮游动物是一种主要以藻类为食的微小海洋生物。科学家们发现,照射在水面上的灯光会导致更多的藻类在水中生长,这应该对饥饿的浮游动物有益。)”可知,二氧化碳浓度增加可能产生的影响是藻类繁殖迅速。故选A。 根据最后一段“Nutrient-rich plants are critical for tackling health problems around the world, and lower levels of nutrients put fragile populations at risk. For instance, estimates show that 150 million people may be at risk for protein deficiency (不足) by 2050, and iron deficiency may affect a billion pregnant women within the same time frame.(营养丰富的植物对于解决世界各地的健康问题至关重要,而较低的营养水平使脆弱的人口处于危险之中。例如,估计显示,到2050年,1.5亿人可能面临蛋白质缺乏的风险,而在同一时间段内,缺铁可能会影响10亿孕妇。)”可知,最后一段主要讲的是二氧化碳浓度上升对健康造成的危害。故选C。 D Fruit flies have attracted brain scientists for decades because the insects’ small brains are capable of complex behaviors, like flying, fighting, and even mating (求偶) singing. Draw fruit flies’ brain miswiring 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. Since last winter, Humphrey has been making, selling, and distributing her very own dorm-made kombucha (康普茶). ___16___ As someone who struggled with health problems, she found the drink to be a great way to add more health benefits to her diet. ___17___ At first, she “didn’t even like it. It tasted like vinegar,” she said. After trying it for a second time, she ended up acquiring a taste for it. Soon enough, she was swallowing it down every morning. But with the empty bottles piled up, so did the bill. It was too expensive to keep buying it, so she sought a new solution: If you don’t want to buy it, then make it. ___18___ She learned the ropes from the shopkeeper, who had some experience in the practice. After making her first attempt, her sisters soon became addicted to the drink and eventually encouraged her to start selling it. Humphrey made a batch (批) or two a month and packed it in her friends’ used glass bottles and went around to distribute it. Originally, Humphrey was hesitant to put up advertisements for her business, worrying that administration would have a problem with it. In fact, the anxiety was unnecessary. ___19___ She tasted every batch, and would never sell something which she didn’t taste first. As word spread, her business grew beyond her initial expectations. She liked the creative aspect of it both from the business half and the actual product-making half. ___20___. It can be hard to balance if you’re a full-time student who also handles a part-time job, but Humphrey likes the challenge. She manages everything from her social media page to filling orders. A. Soon enough, she bought a kombucha-making kit. B. Making kombucha takes a great deal of time as well. C. She made quality and safety of the product her priority. D. However, she didn’t always have a passion for kombucha. E. It’s definitely harder to run the business than to make the drink. F. She begins experimenting with new flavors while making money. G. The two teenagers, coming from the quiet suburbs of Illinois, had never seen the vast ocean. Just then, the fisherman ran up without hesitation. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Making sure Denise was safe, the fisherman simply turned around and was about to leave. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Just then, the fisherman ran up without hesitation. He jumped into the ocean and swam towards Denise, with his single body fighting against the huge waves bravely. Fortunately, he managed to grasp Denise’s hand. With surprising strength, he pulled her out of the water and brought her safely to the beach. Frightened and worried, Denise’s friend ran quickly towards Denise. Once Denise was safe and sound, the fisherman, breathing heavily, stood there for a minute to ensure she was in good condition. Making sure Denise was safe, the fisherman simply turned around and was about to leave. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Denise thanked the fisherman from the bottom of her heart for his courageous rescue. This life-threatening experience served as a tough lesson, teaching her the significance of honoring nature’s strength and cherishing life. As the fisherman walked away, his kind-hearted act of heroism left a deep impression on her, showing selflessness could even be found in the most unexpected places. From then on, Denise promised to pay forward the kindness she received, making a commitment to always help others in need. 3. 词汇激活: 行为类: ①抓住:grasp/catch ②确保:ensure/make sure ③珍惜:cherish/value ④发现:find/spot 情绪类: ①恐惧的:frightened/scared ②担忧的:worried/concerned ③勇敢的:courageous/brave 【点睛】【高分句型1】Once Denise was safe and sound, the fisherman, breathing heavily, stood there for a minute to ensure she was in good condition.(运用了以连词once引导的时间状语从句。) 2】As the fisherman walked away, his kind-hearted act of heroism left a deep impression on her, showing selflessness could even be found in the most unexpected places.(运用了以连词as引导的时间状语从句和省略了连接词that的宾语从句。)
