College Rankings Are Something, but Not Everything
I am always confused when reading statements like “Princeton University is the number one college in the United States.” Are those who attend Princeton inherently brighter than their 1 ? Is Princeton able to produce more geniuses upon graduation?
High-ranking colleges in global education leagues attract greater talent in staff and students, and 2 better facilities, therefore generating more profits. In the United States, however, this virtuous cycle can turn vicious when financially-challenged parents end up spending their life savings on their children’s education, while 3 individuals can simply buy their way in. Besides, these rankings face criticism for potentially influencing colleges to make minor adjustments in 4 to improve their position on the table.
I didn’t care about college rankings for years until I recently saw something different. This past October, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy 5 the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023, which assesses universities worldwide across 55 subjects in five disciplines. It is said to employ a more in-depth 6 to evaluate the performance of universities. And this makes it easier for prospective students to choose the best college for their specific subject. But how much weight should you give to these rankings?
In my opinion, college rankings can serve as a reference, offering a 7 into the reputation and strengths of institutions. However, they should not be the only determining factor for you. There are many aspects to a university education that can only be 8 when you are clear about your goals.
I once taught a three-month program to prepare university students for overseas exchange programs in England. But some of them displayed low 9 . It wasn’t merely due to a language barrier. These individuals seemed to lack communication skills, critical thinking and, more importantly, a 10 of purpose, which might help determine their future academic quality. After all, what lies in the heart of education is “U” .

The reason for the mysterious deaths of hundreds of elephants
When hundreds of African savanna elephants dropped dead in Botswana’s Okavango Delta in 2020, conservationists were alarmed. As the death toll rose — from dozens in March to more than 350 animals by July — their 11 increased, especially because nobody knew what was happening. A short time later, the mystery 12 when 34 more individuals of the endangered species died across the border in northwestern Zimbabwe in a three-week period, with one more found in November. “It was very quick,” says Chris Foggin, a vet who examined the elephant carcasses (尸体) in Zimbabwe. “That was so 13 .”
African savanna elephants 14 to this area represent the majority of what’s left of that species. Around 350,000 African savanna elephants remain, and given the already significant 15 to their survival, a new disease could be what tips that last domino towards extinction.
Now, new research published recently in Nature Communications points to a bacterium not 16 found in elephants of any species, called Bisgaard taxon 45, that causes a massive systemic blood infection called septicemia. “It’s a disease we know can kill a reasonable number of elephants in a short space of time,” says Foggin, co-leader of the study. And “it has the potential to kill a lot more given the right circumstances.” What those are, however, remains unknown — yet it’s pressing to find out. Aerial population surveys in KAZA in 2022 found a high number of new elephant carcasses. The examination 17 the elephants had enlarged livers and spleens, as well as internal bleeding in multiple organs — signs of septicemia (败血症).
However, scientists still don’t know how widespread Bisgaard taxon 45 is, or if the bacteria 18 as a normal group of bacteria within elephants and other animals. “We’re assuming it’s probably present more 19 than we’ve known, without causing disease, but we don’t have proof of that,” Foggin says. It’s possible environmental stressors, such as heat and lack of food and water, may have led Bisgaard taxon 45 to multiply and cause the septicemia in the Zimbabwe elephants. With much of Africa predicted to get hotter and drier, the bacterium “could cause much worse mortalities down the line,” says Foggin. That’s why, he says, “it is important to 20 monitoring elephant deaths and see if it’s responsible.”

The population of the world is increasing rapidly. By 2030, there could be 8.0 billion people on earth. Will there be 21 food for all these people, or will we have a food shortage? Some scientists think fish farming could 22 this problem. However, other scientists worry that fish farming could cause serious environmental problems.
Fish farming is not a 23 thing. There were fish farms in China 3, 000 years ago. Today, about one-third of the fish we eat comes from fish farms.
Most fish farms raise plant-eating fish. Popular kinds of plant-eating fish are carp, tilapia, and catfish. Unfortunately, many fish farms are starting to raise meat-eating fish. A popular type of meat-eating fish is salmon. These meat-eating fish live on 24 food made from wild fish. However, it takes up to 5 tons of wild fish to produce just 1 ton of farm-raised salmon. The 25 of wild fish is already decreasing.
Eventually, many types of wild fish could go 26 . What will we do then? 27 of fish farming also say that farm-raised fish is unhealthy for humans. They say the fish contains dangerous chemicals. They also blame the issue on fish farming because it pollutes the water. Another criticism is that farm-raised fish can spread diseases to wild fish.
Some people say that the farming methods being used now hasn’t 28 enough fish anyway. Instead of putting fish farms in lakes or near the coast, they say that the fish farms should be moved far out into the ocean. Several countries have already 29 with deep-ocean farms. In the future, fish farms might be large cages that move across the ocean.
Like most things, there is both a good and a bad side to fish farming. Fish farming may help to 30 millions of people. At the same time, however, fish farming may damage the environment.

Dolphin Senses
New research involving trained dolphins seems to further prove that these animals can sense electricity. The 31 may allow them to better lock onto hidden fish hunted and direct the path.
The ability to sense electric fields is known as electroreception(电感受). All animals produce a weak electric field, but electroreception has almost 32 been found in water creatures. About a decade ago, scientists published research suggesting that some dolphins have passive electroreception. And in 2021, researchers in Germany released their own study finding that dolphins likely have it, too.
This new research is a follow-up to that latter study by the same team—one intended to better describe the 33 of electroreception in bottlenose dolphins. The researchers teamed up with scientists from the Nuremberg Zoo, which currently 34 six dolphins. They specifically worked with two bottlenose dolphins named Donna and Dolly. They first trained them to rest their jaws on a metal bar in the water, and then to respond to an electric field 35 them by swimming away within five seconds. They then gradually 36 the strength of this field to test the dolphins’ sensitivity.
The findings further prove that bottlenose dolphins can indeed sense electricity, but suggest that some dolphins are better at it than others. Donna, for instance, was a bit more 37 and able to respond correctly to a weaker field than Dolly.
The electroreception found in dolphins doesn’t 38 to be as strong as it is in the typical shark, but it’s probably still useful enough for them to find fish 39 underneath sand, stones or mud within a few centimeters away. Other studies have suggested that dolphins also possess a sense that acts as a sort of 40 GPS for them. So these dolphins’ electroreception might provide an explanation for that ability as well, Huttner said.

Several deep-sea fish have been mysteriously washed up on California’s beaches this year, leaving marine biologists 41 .
The latest Pacific football fish to be washed 42 in the state was spotted near Encinitas last Friday. A surfer found the strange fish dead on Swami’s Beach and alerted lifeguards, who then notified scientists. Scientist Ben Frable then collected the unusual animal for research and 43 purposes.
The fish is black, almost spherical in shape and has sharp teeth. It has a strange external body sticking out from its head with multiple branches, used to attract prey in the 44 blackness of the deep ocean.
The fish found on Swami’s Beach is a mature 45 measuring nearly 13 inches in length and weighing around 5.5 pounds.
Pacific football fish are very rarely seen considering that they are 46 found at depths of between 650 and 2,600 feet. Only 31 known fish have ever been collected 47 and it has never been seen in the wild, so scientists know very little about the species.
Despite the fact that the fish are rarely seen, three of them have been washed up on California’s beaches this year —including one that was spotted last month at Black’s Beach, north of San Diego. The three sightings this year 48 the total number of sightings on record in California, and it’s the 49 of the town among the experts working at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, which has four fish in its collection.
Despite the series of recent sightings, experts said, it’s hard to jump to any 50 about why this is happening.

Game Designer Tries to Reinvent the Classics
Scottish game designer Simon Meek’s idea of “playing through” literary classics seems ridiculous (荒谬的). In practice, however, his work of transforming the world’s greatest literature into something on a gaming device is quite 61 from developing a new game.
Meek and his company are actually creating digital adaptations, works that put readers inside the scenes of a classic and ask them to 62 the story from inside out. They want to do for the video game generation what public broadcast television did for the television generation, adapting great works of literature into something that could 63 their reach.
“We use a combination of original art and game engines to 64 some truly stunning (极具吸引力的) environments. Add to that audio design, and the world of a book is brought to life, explains Meek, “On this stage, we let the player actively absorb the story.” Sections of the book’s original text will also be occasionally 65 on the screen “when words are best placed to tell the story,” he adds.
In one scene in Wuthering Heights (《呼啸山庄)》), for example, players will find themselves in Catherine Linton’s room. They can see everything that is 66 in the book, such as the furniture consisting of a chair, a wardrobe and a large wooden case. Words taken directly form the book float into view at the 67 time, like “In vapid listlessness, I leant my head against the window.” Players can hear the wind outside, described in the book as howling (怒者的).
Where a book leans on a reader’s 68 to fill in the gaps between the words on a page, these digital adaptations paint a complete picture. Does that mean a player won’t feel the need to go and read the original text?
“We’re not looking at digital adaptation as a way to 69 books,” says Meek. “It would be great if they inspired people to read the original text. We want our adaptations to make classic stories more 70 to a modern audience and eventually open them up to new readers.”

AMERICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER Lauv has released a new Korean version of his single “Love U Like That,” created with the help of AI voice technology. He enlisted the help of the Korean singer Kevin Woo, who aided with the translation of the song and recorded vocals.
Kevin’s voice singing the translation was recorded first. It was then arranged to match the sound 71 . AI voice technology was then used to match Lauv’s voice, and Kevin’s Korean version was 72 into Lauv’s voice.
“To help them build the model of my voice, I sent over a bunch of raw vocals that were just me singing in different registers (声区),” Lauv said. “It was very interesting to hear my voice like that. I gave a couple of notes-very minor things-after hearing the 73 version. And then they went back and made some modifications (修改).”
Lauv is the first major Western artist to jump on the AI translation bandwagon (加入潮流). He wants the new translated version of “Love U Like That” to be a way of showing his love to his Korean fan base. Although large numbers of fans around the world listen to English music musicians have noticed that some international audiences are increasingly turning their interest back to music in their local language - a trend they have nicknamed “Glocalization.” As a result, some AI voice synthesis (合成) companies are working to 74 translation. English-speaking artists can now join this growing movement and establish closer 75 with international fans.
It is an important moment for the music business. A series of deepfake (深度伪造) songs that mimic the vocals of real stars have caused a stir. The most 76 example is the one claimed to be sung by two major artists, Drake and The Weekend. At the same time, it is also becoming very clear that not all uses of AI in music are a cause for 77 . An artist’s “voiceprint” can also be used in a/an 78 way. Earlier this month, we saw The Beatles release their final song “Now and Then” (an instant No.1 chart hit, unsurprisingly), an AI-assisted salvage (抢救) of the voice from a 40-year-old cassette recording. AI tech can indeed enhance musicians’ work and 79 a positive contribution to the future of music.
In an interview, Lauv also touched on his openness about the use of AI in music. “I truly believe that the only way forward is to embrace what is possible now, no matter what. I think being able to embrace a tool like this is 80 . And being able to get artists paid is great,” he said.

Drink Up - Hydrating beverages (补水饮料) that aren’t water
Our bodies are about 60% water and if we don’t get enough to drink, we can suffer extreme tiredness and headaches. So how much water do we need to drink each day? People used to believe everyone should drink 8 glasses of water a day, but experts say current research supports paying attention to your 81 needs — which can vary from day to day.
Generally, the average adult male requires about 13 cups of water a day, while the average female needs just over 8 cups. On some days, though — when it’s hot or you’re working out or taking certain medicines — you may need more.
If those 82 sound like way too much water for your taste, don’t worry. You don’t have to drink that much, and it doesn’t have to be all water. You 83 can sometimes replace plain water with these drinks:
COFFEE That’s right, coffee. A 2014 U.K. study measured the body water of subjects in two groups: one that drank 4 cups of coffee a day and the other a(n) 84 amount of water. When the amount of food intake and exercise is 85 , researchers found no significant difference in body-water levels. There is no reason that coffee can’t count toward your daily water 86 . Try to limit yourself to 3 or 4 cups max, though, to stay within healthy limits.
MILK In a 2015 study 87 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, British researchers found that cows’ milk, both full-fat and skim, can provide humans with more water. That’s because it takes longer to digest than water, 88 the body to absorb more. Milk also supplies other nutrients that most of us need more of.
JUICE Fruit and vegetable juices with no 89 sugar are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which can reduce infection and help prevent age-related diseases. Natural sugars contained in juice digest more slowly than processed sugar, helping to 90 your metabolism (新陈代谢). Orange juice is slightly more hydrating than water, according to a 2015 British study.

Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shopper.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline 91 this question and concluded that it’s not as 92 as it seems.
Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented-receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon 93 of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.
She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and 94 up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By 95 the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi’s.”
Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting 96 . All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene, an air pollutant that 97 cancers, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren’t great, either.
Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily 98 . There’s something called “share washing” that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, 99 as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership.” and yet “it has been proven to 100 walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.”
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There’s an even better step-that’s wearing what is already in the closet.

What makes the perfect winter read?
As the weather turns and the sky darkens, autumn and winter can often feel like the perfect time for curling up with a good book.
But I wonder if it’s just me who finds that my reading 101 seem to change along with the seasons? The books I might choose to read in some sunny garden are very different from the ones I want when the wind is blowing outside and a few precious hours of watery daylight are the best we can hope for.
I always 102 writing that evokes (唤起) time and place, and in the midst of the coldest, darkest part of the year, I want more than ever for a book to be “a ball of light” in my hands, as Ezra Pound famously once put it — a(n) 103 of life and love.
I also need a certain degree of comfortness in a winter read — something that will keep me warm when the weather won’t! Give me gothic (哥特式的) building in the snow, with heroines whose passions burn brightly. Or let me escape completely, into some fantasy 104 — but I’d still like my forests icy and pine smelling. Give me stories of 105 and re-birth. Remind me that this time of year has 106 , too.
Katherine May’s beautiful, poetic deep thought on the season, Wintering, does precisely this. Seemingly, it’s 107 , combining aspects of her life with more universal thoughts on how we might winter well. But there’s a lyrical (抒情的), 108 quality to the writing that confuses plain concepts like “genre”. She 109 that in winter we need different tools to get us through the season and it also offers one such tool, since Wintering itself is the perfect guide book and 110 to see you through until spring.
That’s why books that help me see the beauty of the season will always be high on my list of winter reads.

Red foxes exist throughout much of the United States, with the exception of the southwest. In Chicago, they are not common in high numbers, but are still 111 in certain areas of the city. Coyotes(丛林狼) usually compete with red foxes, and the large coyote population and 112 living space in Chicago maybe related to the small number of red foxes.

Dead Poets Society (死亡诗社) is a 1989 American drama film written by Tom Schulman, directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams. In the autumn of 1959, Neil begins his senior year of high school at Welton Academy, an all- male, elite school.

Red foxes are 113 smaller than coyotes, weighing 7-15 pounds on average and standing up to 20 inches. Easily recognizable by their striking redcoats, red foxes also have black 114 on their feet, black-tipped ears, as well as along tail.
Generally living alone, red foxes do not form 115 like other dog-like animals. Adults 116 during the breeding(繁殖) season to raise their young in hidden places, such as fallen trees, or other natural or artificial structures. As omnivores(杂食动物), red foxes eat a variety of foods including rabbits, birds, insects and fruits. Red foxes may store food in buried locations where they pile up 117 to eat later. Sometimes they are killed by coyotes and humans. They are also easily affected by harmful skin diseases that can lead to death if not 118 .
When digging homes under buildings, red foxes may come into conflict with people. Sometimes foxes may hunt outdoor cats or chickens. Keep cats indoors and get these areas 119 to prevent foxes entering. As with any wild animal, it is important to never feed red foxes, as this may cause them to lose their natural 120 of humans and exhibit unusual behaviors.
