(24-25九年级上·浙江绍兴·期中)October 14 was International E-Waste Day. This year, the day was focused on “invisible” (看不见的) e-waste—things most people don’t think of as electronics.
As newer and more advanced devices come out, huge amounts of electronics are thrown away, instead of being recycled. These items may be a danger to the environment because electronics can contain harmful materials like lead or mercury. If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems.
Most electronics require rare metals, like gold, copper and lithium..., which must be mined from the earth. Often the mining process creates serious pollution.
A group known as WEEE (废弃电子电气设备论坛) says that the rare metals and other materials that get thrown out as e-waste every year are worth about $57 billion. Recently, WEEE asked researchers from the UN to study a kind of e-waste that’s often unnoticed. The UN study revealed that about 1/6 of all e-waste is “invisible”, and that the value of this unseen waste is actually about $9.5 billion a year.
Though it’s “invisible”, it’s certainly not a small amount. The invisible e-waste weighs about 19.8 billion pounds. WEEE says that if this e-waste were piled into 40-ton trucks and the trucks were then lined up, the line of trucks would stretch for about 3,500 miles.
The surprising category leading the invisible e-waste group was toys. Worldwide, roughly 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year, including items like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys, or toys with electronic parts, like dolls that speak or games with electronic timers. In all, toys make up about 35% of invisible e-waste.
▲ The report also shows that other everyday items like smoke alarms, power tools, and computer cables are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The UN report says that 35% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these three categories.
1.What can be learnt from the passage?
A.The electronics thrown out yearly are about $57 billion.
B.The value of the e-waste is about $ 9.5 billion every year.
C.The e-waste can be lined up for about 3,500 miles.
D.About 70% of invisible e-waste is from everyday items.
2.Which sentence can be best put in the ▲ ?
A.The electronic toys are not the only invisible e-waste.
B.The effect caused by e-waste can hardly be seen.
C.The problems are far larger than those of waste toys.
D.The invisible e-waste can be found in our daily lives.

A.The negative influence of e-waste.
B.The main sources of invisible e-waste.
C.The different opinions on e-waste.
D.The possible ways of recycling invisible e-waste.

The world is getting warmer, and the ice in high mountains is melting. How to slow down the melt?
Wearing “clothes”
In the 1990s, people in Switzerland put white “blankets” on ski areas. The white color can reflect the sunshine and keep the ice cool. The blankets are made of wool, so rain can go through the blankets and become ice. It can slow down the melt by about 50 to 70 percent. Today, the “blankets” in Switzerland cover 10,000 to 50,000 square meters of ice.
Painting the rocks
Farmers in the Andes Mountains in Peru use a similar idea. Above 5,000 meters, they paint the rocks with white “paint”. The paint is made of water, sand and soap. The soap helps it stick to the rocks. The white rocks can be 16℃ cooler than the dark rocks.
_________
Scientists at an organization called Glaciers Alive turn to man-made snow for help in Switzerland. In winter, they use water from a small lake up in the mountain. The water goes down some pipes (管道). On the pipes, there are shower heads (喷头). The water flows out from the pipes and becomes snow on the mountain.
1.What does the word “melt” mean in Para. 1?
A.冻结 B.凝结 C.消失 D.融化
2.What are the “blankets” used for?
A.Keeping the ice warm. B.Slowing down the melt of the ice.
C.Making the mountain more beautiful. D.Replacing the ice.
3.Why are the paint and blankets white according to the passage?
A.Because white makes the paint and blankets seem clean.
B.Because white is different from the color of the mountain.
C.Because the white color can reflect the sunshine.
D.Because the white color can make the ice cooler.
4.What does the underlined word “it” in Para. 3 refer to?
A.The white paint. B.Water. C.Sand. D.The white rock.
5.What’s the best title for Para. 4 _________?
A.An organization called Glaciers Alive B.Creating snow
C.Help from Switzerland D.The melt of the ice

Plastic is 2 /ha:rmfl/ to the environment. Some say banning plastic straws is 3 important step towards saving our planet, but others think plastic-straw bans are inconvenient, unnecessary, and unfair. Let’s see 4 these two Americans said.
Josh Lee from Chicago, Illinois shared his idea. “Plastic straws may help make drinking easy, 5 the long-term costs are too high. When they are thrown away, they pollute our land and sea. Sea animals sometimes mistake the plastic for food. They may 6 (dead) because of that. In my opinion, if one likes using straws, he can buy paper or steel (钢) straws to carry 7 him.”
Maria Suarez from Bellaire, Texas thought differently. “Many people with disabilities (缺陷) depend on plastic straws to drink 8 (safe). Without plastic straws, people might use paper straws, but making paper products 9 (require) a lot of energy. Also, it creates air and water pollution. And paper can be used only once. Plastic can be reused and recycled. Finally, it is wrong to think that banning plastic straws will save the sea. I 10 , we should teach people to leave rubbish in the right place so it doesn’t end up on beaches or in waterways.”

Making meat from CO2 is a way 4 (reuse)it. It is hard to imagine that the food could be 5 (produce) from CO2, but that is exactly one of the astronauts’ foods. As we all know, the process is rather difficult. 6 the cost is very high. However, it makes the food nearly100 t 7 more environment- friendly than others. Scientists are trying their 8 (good) to improve the process. And scientists want to make the public have the ability to afford it.
Then, making 9 (shoe) from CO2 is also a new technology. A sports shoe company is trying to make parts of shoes with carbon.
