In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now salao, and ordered the boy to join another boat, which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty. The sail looked like the flag of failure(失败)forever. The old man was thin with deep wrinkles(皱纹)in the back of his neck. His face was terribly brown because of the strong sunlight on the sea every day and his hands had the deep scars(伤疤) from dealing with heavy fish on the lines. But none of these scars were fresh. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful. “Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from the sea. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.” The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.” “But remember how you went eighty—four days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks. ” “I remember,” the old man said. “It was papa who made me leave. I am a boy and I must follow him.” “I know,” the old man said. “It is quite normal(正常的).” “He hasn’t much faith(信心).” “No,” the old man said. “But we have. Haven’t we?” “Yes,” the boy said. “Can I offer you a beer?” “Why not?” the old man said “Between fishermen.” 4. The underlined word “salao” in the first paragraph probably means _________. A. the boy was worried about the old man’s health B. the boy’s parents believed in the old man C. everyone laughed at the old man’s bad luck D. the old man was always full of hope C Thanks to endless photos on social media and the wealth of information on the Internet, future people should have a clear picture of how we lived in the 21st century. But Martine Rothblatt, a business woman from the US, wants to go a step further by digitally cloning (克隆) human minds. These “mindclones” would have all of our thoughts, feelings, and be able to think just like us. Rothblatt imagines that mindclones will first begin as digital (数字的) assistants(助手) in our mobile devices (装置), until they become walking, talking versions (版本) of us – but these are far from reality at the moment. Mindcloning technology is still very young, and it might be a long time before we can send our man-made selves to school so we don’t have to sit through math class. However, scientists at Stanford University in the United States recently created a circuit (电路) board modeled on the human brain that could simulate(模拟) 1 million neurons (神经元) and billions of connections in the brain. Finally, Rothblatt sees mindclones having their own rights as people, and even falling in love and getting married. “Let’s say [the ex Apple CEO] Steve Jobs meets another mindclone. They fall in love. Mindclones are just people without bodies. Once the mindclones fall in love, they are going to get married. That’s what people do,” she said. But Rothblatt’s idea that the digital versions of ourselves would have the same rights as people is not shared by everyone. Some people have thought that the mind must be embedded (嵌入) in biology for it to be thought as “life”, HuffPost reported. 7. According to Rothblatt, mindclones _________. A. will finally become robots B. will be used in our mobile devices C. will become reality soon D. have more rights than people 8. What is the latest development in mindcloning technology? A. We can send our man-made selves to school. B. People can improve their studies by using mindclones. C. Steve Jobs and a mindclone will get married. D. A circuit board has been modeled after a human brain. 9. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. The writer agrees with Rothblatt’s idea. B. The writer disagrees with Rothblatt’s idea. C. Not everyone agrees with Rothblatt about mindclones’ rights. D. It’s meaningless to discuss the rights of “mindclones”. D I needed to buy a digital camera, one that was just good at taking good photos, maybe sometimes for magazines. I went online, spent 15 minutes reading product reviews on good websites, wrote down the names of three top recommendations and headed for my nearest big friendly camera store. There in the cupboard was one of the cameras on my list. And it was on special offer. I pointed at it and asked an assistant, “Can I have one of those?” He looked perturbed (不安).“Do you want to try it first?” he said. It didn’t quite sound like a question. “Do I need to?” I replied. “There’s nothing wrong with it?” This made him look a bit unhappy and I started to feel bad. “No, no. But you should try it.” he said. “Compare it with the others.” I looked across at the others: shelves of similar cameras along the wall, offering a wide range(范围) of slightly different prices and discounts, with each company selling a range of models based around the same basic box. With so many models to choose from, it seemed that I would have to spend hours weighing X against Y, always trying to take Z and possibly H into my choice. But when I had finished, I would still have only the same two choices that I had entered the store with: first, soon after I carried my new camera out of the shop, it would be worth half what I paid for it; and second, my wonderful camera would very quickly be replaced by a new model. In the end, I agreed to try the model I had chosen. The assistant seemed a nice man. So I let him take out my chosen camera from the cupboard, show how it took excellent pictures of some shoppers... and when he started to introduce the special parts, I stopped him and asked whether I needed to buy a carry-case and a memory card as well. Why do we think that new choices still offer us anything new? Perhaps it is because they offer a chance to prevent facing the fact that our real choices in this culture are far more limited than we would like to imagine. 10. The shop assistant insisted that the writer should _________. A. try the camera to see if there was anything wrong with it B. compare the camera he had chosen with the others C. get more information about different companies D. believe him and stop asking questions 11. A. knew very little about it B. didn’t believe the shop assistant C. had a special interest in taking pictures of shoppers D. wanted to make sure the one he chose would be the best 13. It can be inferred(推断)from the passage that in the writer’s opinion, _________. A. people waste too much money on cameras B. cameras have become an important part of our daily life C. we don’t actually need so many choices when buying a product D. famous companies care more about the money they can make than quality 三、词汇运用 (A)根据句意和汉语注释,在答题卡对应题号的横线上,写出单词的正确形式。 1.
